I'm thrilled to have my friend and fellow Golden Heart finalist (and winner) on GLIAS today!.  Please meet the delightful Darcy Woods!

MEET DARCY WOODS

Young adult author Darcy Woods had three big loves in grade school: reading, writing, and pizza day. Some things never change. She lives in Michigan with her madly supportive husband, two tuxedo cats (who overdress for everything) and a closet full of neatly organized shoes. SUMMER OF SUPERNOVAS is her Golden Heart-winning debut novel.

Tell the readers about your fabulous debut - SUMMER OF SUPERNOVAS!  Release date --  MAY 10, 2016.

THE STORY BLURB

Fans of Jennifer E. Smith and Jenny Han will fall in love with this heartfelt and humor-laced debut following one girl’s race to find the guy of her cosmic dreams.

When zodiac-obsessed teen Wilamena Carlisle discovers a planetary alignment that won’t repeat for a decade, she’s forced to tackle her greatest astrological fear: The Fifth House—relationships and love.

But when Wil falls for a sensitive guitar player hailing from the wrong side of the astrology chart, she must decide whether a cosmically doomed love is worth rejecting her dead mother’s legacy and the very system she’s faithfully followed through a lifetime of unfailing belief.
Nan: I can't wait until this shows up on my Nook.  I have already pre-ordered!

READ A LITTLE
Sadly, I don't have any excerpts in the wild yet. But there IS an exclusive chapter reveal coming soon on Bustle! And since I'm a firm believer in consolation prizes, here's a tiny taste of what you can expect from SUMMER OF SUPERNOVAS…

Nan: Love it!

PRE-ORDER THE BOOK

A LIGHTING ROUND OF Q&A WITH DARCEY WOODS
NAN: How often to you get lost in a story?
DARCY: Every single day if I'm living right! Unfortunately I don't get to devour books at the speed I once did, but I still make reading a daily practice. That's what fills the well. Even if it's only thirty minutes while I'm sweating my ass off on the elliptical--I'll take it wherever I can get it! Next up in my diet of YA reads? The Darkest Lie by Pintip Dunn. Secrets, lies, and tangled truths… I AM SOLD!!!
Nan: I can't wait to read that one, too.  My TBR pile is toppling over!

NAN:  What is your hope for the future of the romance genre?
DARCY: Hold on, let me grab my rose-colored glasses. Ah, that's better. I dream of a world where people don't feel the need to apologize when they say they read romance. If a book makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes your heart hammer, makes you contemplate your immortal soul, or simply offers an escape from your own reality--THAT BOOK IS IMPORTANT. Which makes any preconceived notions about a genre's worth, irrelevant.
Nan: I can't wait for that to become a reality.

NAN: High Heels or Hiking Boots?
DARCY: No contest…HEELS. (Although never while hiking because I'm a practical gal at heart.) But I do require very specific heels--the kind with wedges and/or platforms. Since my affair with gravity is lifelong and I've been known to take an inelegant tumble, stability is key! And they need to be FUN. Here's one of my fave pairs that will accompany me to Nationals this year. I pretty much live in the shadow of these shoes.
Nan: I love these shoes!  They are so you!

NAN: Which already filmed movie represents your writing style?
DARCY: This is such a magnificent question! I honestly never gave it much thought until some recent reviewers mentioned it. So I'm going to sponge off their collective awesome and say, John Hughes. Think Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink for the millenials. Lots of humor. Lots of heart.
Nan: Fabulous comparisons.

NAN: What was the first story you remember writing?
DARCY: Oh, I'll do you one better, Nan! I have actual photographic evidence of one of the first short stories I wrote when I was four. As you'll see, it's a rather complex tale of an unlikely friendship between Fred the Shiny Frog, and Chipy the Chipmunk. They played. They shared. All was peaceful. It wasn't until much later I learned about this thing called conflict. (And also spelling and vocabulary, but I digress…)
Nan: This is too funny!  Obviously, you were born to write.

NAN: What could we find in your heroine's purse?
DARCY: Well, her purse would definitely be vintage. And it would have her favorite lipstick--Parisian Pout, her license (even though she doesn't have her own car), a guitar pick from a forbidden boy, a tampon that will likely fall out at the worst possible moment, and her soul mate's astrology chart. Also, if physics allowed, she would squeeze in one of her gram's Hubba Hubba Hazelnut cupcakes.
Nan: I want one in my purse.  Which would not be vintage!

NAN'S GOTTA ASK: What color would you make the sky if it wasn’t going to be blue anymore and why?

DARCY'S GOTTA ANSWER:  Purple! I have ALWAYS had an affinity for the color purple. When I was little, I went through a phase where it was the only color I wanted to wear. So basically I went through a chunk of my childhood looking like a grape. But I stand by my fruity color!
Nan: Love purple!

DARCY WOODS WANTS TO KNOW: Nan's question about my heroine's purse got me thinking… What's the strangest thing or combination of things in your purse right now?

Me? I just found not one, but THREE different tubes of lipstick, plus a Cheddar Bunny with missing hindquarters.

So? What treasures did YOU find???

Nan:  Thank you for hanging with the crew today, Darcy!  Prosecco pouring for a fantastic launch of your debut.

Darcy's drawing will be open through Sunday - so please comment for a chance to win.

She runs from her home, hoping to lay low in the small Washington town of Whitmore. She didn’t count on meeting Jack, a cranky nine-hundred year old dragon who, despite her protests, vows to protect her. She also didn’t count on him being so deliciously attractive in that grumbling way.

Jack has no desire for a mate, especially after being dumped by the love of his life. Yet somehow he’s suckered into protecting a beautiful siren who can make things explode just by raising her voice. Reluctantly he takes the alluring Adelle under his wing, finding her quirky charms irresistible. And when angry vampires come to take her back, the dragon finds he’s not giving her up without a fight.

Excerpt from Valkyrie's Spear

Her arrogant mean made his blood boil. Matthew’s fingers tighten on her wrist, giving it a slow twist. Valerie flinched but stood strong. A twinge of regret flickered within him but when her flinch turned into a smirk he kept his grip firm.
“Easy there, Father,” Valerie said. “No point in losing your temper just because you’re out of uniform.”
That cocky smile quickened his breath which enraged him even more. When the sensual scent of jasmine wafted from her raven hair, the growl he was trying to lock down escaped. Matthew stared, able to look her in the eye without stooping. He had forgotten how tall she was. It would be so easy to tilt her head and take her mouth. Instead, he shook his head.
“You have been following me for weeks,” he said. “Still clinging to the pathetic belief that you are going to help me?”
“I know I can help you,” she said. “You’re just too God dammed stubborn to know you need it.”
   “Language!” he shouted.
The people on the dance floor stopped gyrating and gawked at them. Matthew bit the inside of his cheek and after a deep breath he reduced his voice a low rumble. “You have no idea what you’re getting into.”
“Oh contraire, mon frère,” Valerie said.
Again with that exasperating smile. He tightened his hold. “Having Valkyrie’s blood in your veins and owning a sword hardly makes you a warrior.”
Valerie’s playful smirk turned into a glare. She yanked her wrist back with surprising strength. “Oh yeah, being underestimated by an ignorant jackhole. I’m not used to that at all.”
Matthew was ready to reprimand her once again for her filthy language when he realized he had no idea what a jackhole was. Was that a curse? Valerie darted away, heading towards Rath, and he sprung after her on long legs.
“Get back here this instant!” he demanded. If she found what he was keeping behind the bar, he was doomed.
She turned around and let out a throaty laugh. “Really? Didn’t you want me to go away a second ago? Well, this is me, going away.” She raised her hand palm up, waving it from side to side in a queenly fashion. “I’m just going to go over to the bar and ask Rath what the hell you two were talking about.”
Matthew expression narrowed. “How do you know Rath?”
“Oh honey, I know a lot of folks in this city.”
She sauntered to the bar, the crowd of humans parting for her, some practically drooling over the beautiful Goddess. After watching that hypnotic backside sway from side to side, Matthew dashed after her again, bumping right into her when she stopped in her tracks. Valerie peered over her shoulder, alive with mischief.
“What’s the matter, Matt? Afraid that I’ll find something behind ol’ Rathy’s bar that I should be staying away from?”
After a grunt, Matthew straightened his posture, smoothing his hair back with both his hands. He knew Valerie could sense the sweat that had broken out across his forehead. She probably could even smell it with those keen Valkyrie senses of hers.
   “You know nothing,” he said.

Since she was a child, Cynthia Diamond craved anything that featured heroines with strong personalities. Now she writes books for sassy nerds with a sharp sense of humor. Starting her adult life in theater, she earned a Masters of Fine Arts in Costume Design, but her first love was telling stories. After some encouragement, she dove down the rabbit hole and created the Wyrd Love series.

When not telling tales about hot dragons and werewolves with tight behinds, Cynthia is an SCA geek and an amateur artist. She resides in sunny San Diego, California with her husband Max, two cats of varying intelligence, and a ton of goldfish.

Get Lost in a Story Interview with Cynthia Diamond

Jillian: What’s your favorite fairy tale?
Cynthia: Its always been Beauty and the Beast. I love the beauty is in the eye of the beholder moral and I've read/seen so many wonderful adaptations of it.  Its one of the few fairy tales where a relationship developed between the hero and the heroine over time instead of BAM true love. The fairy tale always reminds me to look deeper at people and situations because its not always what it seems. Those are themes I hope to explore later in the Wyrd Love series.

Jillian: Describe your favorite kind of hero to read/write?
Cynthia: I like to make every hero as different as possible from the previous one but I always try to put a sense of honor, tenderness and loyalty inside all them. A wicked sense of humor isn't too bad either. A lady needs to have a good solid reason to fall in love, right? I think my favorites are the gruff, "my way or the highway" types. Perhaps I'm one of those writers who like to torture their characters, but I love pairing them with women who drive them completely bonkers. To me nothing is funnier than a man who thinks they have everything, including their woman, under control only to have the rug pulled out from under them. And nothing is sweeter than when he realizes he would sacrifice everything, including that control, for her.

Jillian: What’s the first thing you do when you finish writing a book?
Cynthia: First thing I do is sleep in at my earliest convenience. Seriously. I close the bedroom door then I sleep. Hard. Thank God the husband is not an early riser. Hes a total enabler with my sleeping late habit. After I regain consciousness, I throw a book release party to celebrate. They aren't huge bashes, just a gathering of friends who have supported me during the craziness. I really think its important to celebrate your accomplishments. Writing a book is hard. Getting the courage to let it lose into the world is even harder. Take the time to acknowledge that you're doing something remarkable whether its writing, painting, or making a presentation at work. Treat yourself.

Jillian: How often to you get lost in a story?
Cynthia: Oh Lordy, WAY too often. I've been an avid reader since I was a kid and a movie nut since my teenage years. When something captures my imagination I am lost in that world for days on end. I'll read a book two or three times so I can stay in that world. I'll watch a film until I memorize it to cling to that exhilaration. I love losing myself in someone else's work. The deeper I fall, the more I fall in love with the creator.

Jillian: What was the first story you remember writing?
Cynthia: I was probably about ten years old. My mom gave me one of those blank books with a fancy cover thinking it would my my diary. I was horrible at keeping an diary. Instead I wrote a long, rambling story about all of my favorite cartoon characters saving the world. I'm pretty sure I made the class bully my villain and tortured him in ways only an over dramatic ten year old could. I like to think I've improved since then. At least I hope I have!

Jillian: Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?
Cynthia: I tend to avoid looking at my reviews knowing what kind of personality I am. I'm a dweller and when I do get that bad review I obsess and obsess until I'm ugly crying on the couch and shoveling chocolate ice cream into my mouth. But I'm teaching myself to be more objective and with every book that comes out, I get better at letting it roll off my back. But I do have a group of beta readers who I trust to be honest with me and their advice I take to heart. They  tell me right out when my story needs more work. When they say there's a problem, I strive to correct it.

Jillian: Tea or Coffee? And how do you take it?
Cynthia: I weened myself off coffee when I finished grad school. I drank it so frequently that the caffeine stopped effecting me. From there I moved on to tea and became a total tea addict. Herbal, black, green.. you name it, I will give it a try. There's something about the ritual of tea; warming it, drinking it, and having parties around it, that speaks to me. Through tea I've made some amazing friends. We have tea parties, exchange flavors, and blab on Facebook about the different brands we find. Granted, coffee will slap me hard in the face when I need the jolt but tea is my every day happy drink.

ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?
DANICA: Oh, daily… I love a good story. I’m notorious for asking strangers about their lives and often some of their stories are weaved into the backgrounds of my characters. It’s actually how I came up with Heather Sampson, the heroine of Smoke and Ashes.

ANGI: Hugh Jackman or Chris Pine?
DANICA: Hugh… All the way. Though I would share a glass of wine with either of them. ;)

ANGI: Can you tell us about a real-life hero you’ve met?
DANICA: For the release of this book I have been talking to my local YWCA. There is a wonderful woman, Patty Murphy, who has been working with the organization for 17 years. She has helped thousands of women find safety and lives built upon self-sufficiency. She is truly changing women’s lives.

ANGI: What's your most favorite thing to do in your state?
DANICA: Montana is a big state with even bigger mountains and skies. I love to be outside… hiking, biking, softball, basketball… I do it all (but none of it well).

ANGI: What’s your favorite meal?
DANICA: There is nothing better than a country-fried steak, mashed potatoes and corn. I’m easy to please.

ANGI: What do you like about the heroine of your book?
DANICA: I love that Heather is a woman who realizes she wants something different in her life and no longer wants to be a subjugated. While Kevin literally saves her, she has taken the steps required to end an unhealthy relationship and open her heart to new love.

ANGI: Sand or Snow?
DANICA: Hmmm…. Sand in January, snow in July… What can I say, I want it all!

ANGI: Would you rather be in a Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?
DANICA: Fairy tale. I’m terrified of heights, so I’m sure that my character would be forced to jump a cliff in order to complete their character arc… Nope. Not gonna happen.

ANGI: What’s your favorite rerun on television?
DANICA: My daughter and I have been deep in I Love Lucy episodes. We both love the wallpaper episode.

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
DANICA: Hmmm… Bridget Jones’ Diary resonates with me. I am her, I swear. Put me in front of a microphone and I will say something ridiculous (not to mention the bits that are popular with grannies the world over). ;)

ANGI: What drinks or snacks are always on your desk when you’re writing?
DANICA: I love tea and coffee. I always have one or the other (and sometimes both) at my computer’s side.

ANGI: Who’s your favorite villain?
DANICA: I love Boyd Krauter from Justified. He is perfect.

ANGI: Hiking Boots or Dancing Heels?
DANICA: LOL Easy! Boots.

ANGI: Are you a Star Wars fan?
DANICA: I love the new film—especially Ray and Finn.

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: What’s one thing from your bucket list?
DANICA’S GOTTA ANSWER:  I want to visit Ireland—especially Adare Manor. I was *this close* to going this year, but I have a bit of hectic schedule (note the kids reference earlier in the interview). My evenings right now are spent coaching softball and as a general shuttle service. J But I will see Ireland in the next few years, I may just have to take the mini-mes along with me.

E.E. Burke's Best of the West: a new arrival on The Bride Train

Last month, I introduced a brand new historical romance series, The Bride Train. Today, Book 2 arrives with a story about a disabled veteran and a runaway actress who find luck in love when they least expect it...

Available April 26

She believes in nothing. He has nothing left to believe in, except his good luck charm.

Lady Luck hasn’t been kind to Patrick O’Shea. The Irish immigrant has suffered loss, betrayal and bitter disappointment since arriving in America. But when a talented performer shows up at his saloon looking for a job, it appears his luck is about to change.

Runaway actress Charm LaBelle considers the position at O'Shea's a lucky break, and a way to avoid fulfilling her bridal contract. She's learned the hard way not to entrust her life, or her heart, to any man, in particular one as charming as her employer.

Patrick is determined to hold onto his good luck through whatever means necessary, but Charm won't give up her freedom, or her secrets. It’s only a matter of time before luck runs out…

Excerpt

A shadow in the doorway caught Patrick's attention. The small figure outlined in the bright light from outside looked female. Short, slight, but too shapely for a girl..
She sallied into the male domain with surprising boldness for a lady. Her yellow silk skirt was bunched up in the back in what he assumed was a new style. Gold braid trimmed a black velvet jacket. No farmers’ wives he knew wore that get-up.
Golden curls framed a face with youthful contours. Yet she possessed a mature poise. Patrick tried to guess her age, and couldn’t.
He didn’t wait for her to find whoever she sought, but went straight over to warn her she had best wait outside. As he approached, she regarded him quizzically.
“I’m here to speak with the owner." She spoke distinctly, without any discernible accent. Thick lashes a few shades darker than her hair framed luminous brown eyes. He hadn’t seen many brown-eyed blondes, and it added to the mystery.
Her delicacy and youthful beauty and something else, perhaps the innocence shining in her eyes, drew out a strong protective urge along with unexpected stirrings of desire. Patrick didn't analyze the disturbing reaction. She had to leave. Now.
"Miss, you can't be in here."
The young lady gave him the kind of smile a teacher might bestow on a slow child. “Mr. O’Shea…do you know where I might find him?”
The way she responded, like he hadn't understood, annoyed him. “I’m Patrick O’Shea.”
The mystery woman’s smile vanished and she blinked as if surprised. She quickly recovered her poise. “Yes, Mr. O'Shea... I saw your advertisement on the side of the building.”
“My advertisement?”
Her lips twisted in a wry expression. “I supposed it was yours. Someone wrote, “Female entertainers wanted.”
“Oh, that…yeah, that’s mine. I wrote it…” He caught himself before he kept blabbing on like a fool. Maybe he had taken too much medicine and it had fogged his brain.
She brightened up after he claimed responsibility. “Good. Then I’m talking to the right person.”
“The right person?” He still couldn’t figure out why she was here, though now he recognized her as one of the women who had arrived on the bride train earlier in the month. That didn’t explain why she’d come to the saloon to talk to him about a sign he put up…unless she had an objection.
That had to be it. She was one of those busybodies who liked to tell folks what they could and couldn’t do.
He crossed his arms over his chest and frowned down at her. “Are you here to tell me I shouldn’t be hiring women?”
Confusion flashed across her face, replaced by a look of amusement. “No, Mr. O'Shea…I'm here to apply for the job.”

More about Patrick's Charm...

I’m so excited to introduce you to Patrick and Charm.

While researching this book, I learned a great deal about the Irish experience in America’s Civil War. While the war was raging in the early 1860s, the Union turned to the immigration docks for recruits. These young men were signed up “fresh off the boat” and sent into battle, often with little understanding of what they were up against.

This is how Patrick O’Shea starts his new life in America. Although he questions the wisdom of his decision to enlist, he nevertheless serves honorably, as did his countrymen, many of whom fought with ill-fated Irish Brigade.

Patrick’s permanent injuries are a constant reminder of his bad luck. Wounded soldiers were routinely dosed with opium for pain. Many of them, like Patrick, became dependent on the drug. Opium addiction among former troops was so widespread it was given the name Soldier’s Disease. Today, it’s difficult to imagine the strength it would’ve taken to cope with injury, addiction and the rigors of starting a new life on the frontier. I think you’ll find Patrick a fascinating character.

Patrick meets his match in Charm LaBelle.

Charm is a famous actress traveling incognito. She signed onto the bride train as a means of escaping danger with no intention of getting married. Instead, she takes a job as a saloon singer. Her decision has far-reaching effects. I won't spoil the story by going into them.

Charm’s character is loosely based on a famous 19th century actress, Lotta Crabtree, who got her start as a child, entertaining miners in San Francisco.

Making acting a profession in America in those days required a great deal of courage and fortitude. Traveling through the wilds was bad enough. Performances were held in mining camps, saloons, on makeshift stages. Only the famous few appeared in large theaters. Actresses who traveled the West were strong-willed and independent and certainly didn't fit the mold of Victorian womanhood, which it made it difficult for them to find suitable mates or form relationships with women outside their circle. It wasn't an easy life.

In her impromptu audition, Charm sings two songs popular during the war and afterwards. One you might classify as a "fight song," The Irish Volunteer. If you listen to this, you'll want to jump up and dance like the men did at O'Shea's saloon. The other, Lorena, is a ballad sure to bring tears to the eyes of lonely soldiers. If you want to hear them, check out these versions on YouTube:

Both Charm and Patrick have lived with tragedy, betrayal and bitter disappointment. Trust isn’t something that comes easily for either of them. They are both wounded in different ways. First, they must come together to help each other, and then, through love, find healing.

I hope you enjoy Patrick’s Charm

If you haven't started the series yet and would like to check it out, why not start with the free prequel, which follows the journey of one of the women who answer a railroad advertisement seeking single young ladies as brides for settlers on the western frontier.

The Bride Train takes them to a land plagued by violence and unrest, a place where passion rules…and only a woman’s touch can tame it into love.

To celebrate the release of Patrick's Charm, I'm giving away a $20 Amazon gift card and two eBook copies of Valentine's Rose, Book 1 in the series. Enter the raffle to be eligible to win.
