What's So Great About the Number 38?

Angi Morgan’s latest book “.38 Caliber Cover-Up” hits stores today!

To celebrate, I thought we’d have a bit of silliness revolving around the #38.

So let me share a few things that I’ve learned… (thank you, Wikipedia, for some of these fun facts)

8 fascinating things that are GREAT about the number 38 in no specific order:

1.       38 is the Atomic number on the Periodic table of Strontium, a soft silver-white metallic element of the alkali metal group that turns yellow in air—oh wait, as a chemist, I’m probably the ONLY one who finds that fascinating.  Moving on…

2.    There are 38 surviving plays written by William Shakespeare (there…is that more interesting?)

3.    In Norse mythology, the number 38 represents unnatural bravery.  Norse sagas were also divided into 38 chapters, and the number often recurred throughout stories, with the heroes combating giants or other beasts in groups of 38.

4.    The number is also significant in Egyptian Mythology as it was the characteristic number of Anubis, the jackal-headed god of death.   Egyptian Pharos were often buried with 38 statues of cat guardians, and their sarcophagi were adorned with 38 ankhs.

5.     There are 38 slots on an American Roulette wheel (1-36, 0 and 00).

6.    The Southern Rock Band .38 Special.  Come on! Who didn’t love “Second Chance”???  “When love makes this sound, babe, my heaaaarrrt needs a second chance.”  (Don't ask me what 'this sound' is, though, because I don't know...)

7.     In numerology, the number 38 is the symbol of dangers, conflicts and troubles--Help from a woman is possible. Which ironically enough (insert spooky woo woo music here) sums up Angi’s fantastic book about Undercover DEA agent Erren Rhodes, who needs the help of a beautiful woman, Officer Darby O’Malley, to ferret out a killer.  And, of course, Erren must keep them both safe amidst a thrilling heap of dangers, conflicts and troubles!

8.    Just check out this fantastic line from Page 38 of .38 Caliber Cover-Up:

Proper channels, that’s what she needed. Not a chance. ‘Going rogue’ with her mysterious and most certainly dangerous, new partner was exactly the choice she needed. She could tell herself it was for Pike and Michael, but the quiver that went through her body... The reaction when his breath had skittered along her neck made her wonder if those were her only reasons.

And here’s something that’s so fantabulous that it had have its own paragraph.  To celebrate the release of .38 Caliber Cover-Up, Angi is running a contest 38 days of .38 Caliber.  Go to her website at www.AngiMorgan.com for more details on where she’ll be blogging, but basically if you comment on any of her blogs AND sign up for her newsletter (which you can do at her site), you’ll be entered into a drawing for a Romantic Suspense basket which will be given away on March 6th. 1. Who would have guessed 38 was such a fascinating number? And Heather, my husband's a chemical engineer so he approved of your Atomic number on the Periodic table of Strontium -- didn't want you to feel all alone.

Angi, we hope you are celebrating big time, and don't the fireworks look nice? ;)

  2. Strangely enough it was 8 minutes into February 8th...at least when I began reading.

Okay, I found EVERY SINGLE 38 FACT exciting (even Strontium). But I have to say the numerology woo woo factor gave me goosebumps. And man, I just kind of stopped and had to convince myself that I actually WROTE what was on page 38. LOL

Heather, there is a definite reason you sold. You have an amazing way of putting words together. THANKS so much for another great party day.

I will be checking in throughout the day, but have to warn you that I'm out looking in book stores! Might even buy a copy...I can't help myself. LOL

(Who should wait until 38 minutes after the hour, but I can't...more work before I hit the hay.)

  3. Here's an excerpt from page 38 of The Pursuit of Pleasure by Elizabeth Essex:

"Her giddy feeling was all due to the astonishing accomplishment of her goal--an independent life. It could have nothing to do with the large, masculine hand pressing warmly into the small of her back as he escorted her to the vestry to sign the registry. Nothing whatsoever."

Fun facts, Heather! Enjoy your week, Angi. :)

  4. "He could see that limp hand dangling over the edge of the tub with blood running down one finger..."

LOL sorry, I'm rereading The Shining! It was either that or an excerpt about the German offensive through Belgium from the WWI research book I'm reading.

Strontium sounds like the name of a rock band.

I'm a few chapters in to 38 Calibre Cover Up and loving it. Love a world-weary, cynical hero, yum, especially when paired with a brave cop heroine. It's a great read.

  6. "And you think I'll teach you?"
She met his eyes. "Won't you?"
    Of course.
The words whispered through his brain. The combination of fear and hope in her eyes pulled at him. The scent of her enticed him.

  7. What a fabulous post! And I'll add one. I read somewhere that women are at their most sexy at age 38. Mature and confident, but not really aging yet. Made sense to me. But of course I was 37 or 38 when I read it, so was slightly biased. :)

  8. Numerologically speaking, 3 + 8 = 11. One of my personal favorite numbers, and it is 2011 after all. But also if you add 1 +1 you get a twosome, and isn't that romantic! ;)

  9. I'm glad you all liked my silly facts...I can be a dork sometimes :)

Maureen, I love your 38 fact...as that's the next number on the calendar for me, that's nice to know.

Angi, I hope your week and release are fantastic! You deserve every moment!

And as for page 38 of what I'm currently reading?

Voila stared at her brother in dismay. "So Hammond can just drag me off and there's nothing you can do?"

  10. Okay, Maureen...you can not be that old.
And I totally believe what you read.

Of course, I feel better today than I did at 38 but that's just me.

  12. Not silly facts for me, Maureen. It seemed so appropriate for .38 Caliber!

    I'm definitely loving the quotes.
