Warrior Betrayed:  The Sons of the Zodiac

As Montana Grant struggles to lead her late father's company, her estranged mother suddenly reappears, spouting nonsense about Mount Olympus, immortal warriors, and curses. But after an event that puts the company's future-and Montana's life-at risk, she decides to take her mother's last but of advice.

Quinn Tanner is Montana's security specialist-and a Taurus Warrior. With worldwide peace hanging in the balance, it's up to Quinn to help Montana rise to her destiny-even as they're falling in love.

Thanks so much for inviting me to guest on Get Lost in a Story!  I’m so excited to be here and spending the day with everyone!

CAT:  How often do you get lost in a story?
ADDISON:  As often as possible – literally!  I’m an avid reader and often tell people that I’m a reader first, an author second. I believe you have to love books to want to be a writer and for me, I’ve loved reading since I was a small child.  I usually have 8 to 10 books going at a time, scattered around the house and in my purse and work bag.  And I read 1 to 2 books a week, on average.

CAT:  What’s your favorite “love” word?
ADDISON:  Commitment.  I think commitment is the absolute core of love. Commitment to another person – to stand behind them, to support them and to give them a good swift kick if they need it. The commitment has to be there, always.

CAT:  What turns you off like nothing else?
ADDISON:  Cheapness, definitely.  Personally, I think cheapness has relatively little to do with money and far more to do with selfishness and an unwillingness to share the gifts you’ve been given.

CAT:  Do you write listening to music?  If so, what kind?
ADDISON:  I don’t write to music all that often, but I if I do, it’s usually to something I can comfortably put on in the background.  I’m always impressed by those people who can write with a soundtrack or a heavy, pounding rock song. If it’s a song I know the words to, all I want to do is sing along….which isn’t very conducive to getting the book done!

CAT:  What’s the first thing you do when you finish writing a book?
ADDISON:  At the risk of giving up embarrassing trade secrets, I usually flop into bed. The end of a book usually comes out in a rush and most often, I finish writing a book fairly late at night.  The next day is where the real fun comes in….once I’m awake again, I typically celebrate with an indulgence like a high-calorie latte. The more foamy and filled with caramel, the better!

CAT:  If you were given a chance to travel back to the past, where would you go and specifically why?
ADDISON:  I love the turn of the nineteenth into the twentieth century in New York City. I think that time’s absolutely fascinating (brought to life extraordinarily well by Caleb Carr in his books THE ALIENIST and THE ANGEL OF DARKNESS, by the way).

Human development was in a place where we were entering the modern age, and human life really changed with the advent of the all the things invented in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s – rail travel, photography, the development of cars and airplanes, electricity wired in homes.

I’d select New York specifically because it would be fascinating to me to see the city develop – all the buildings that went up in the early 1900’s in New York – to become the city we know now.

CAT:  Tea or Coffee and how do you take it?
ADDISON:  Both. I usually drink coffee all morning, then switch to tea around Noon.

CAT:  What would you say is your most interesting quirk?
ADDISON:  If I’m interested in something, I’m obsessive in learning all I can about it.  Case in point, I decided several years ago I wanted to understand NFL football.  I learned absolutely everything I could. I read articles, I memorized who the key players and head coaches were and really learned the game.  It’s a skill that still comes in handy at cocktail parties and on first dates!

I also think it’s an odd quirk that’s helped my writing. Once I get interested in understanding something for or about my character, I’m like a dog with a bone – digging into the subject matter until I know it.

CAT’S GOTTA ASK:  If you were a T-shirt, what color would you be and why?
ADDISON’s GOTTA ANSWER:  Green!  Green has been my favorite color since I could pick out colors, so there you have it.

So now I’ve got a question for everyone visiting today.  How deeply do you read within the romance genre (e.g. – paranormal and historical and contemporary) or cross genres (romance, mystery, science fiction)? There’s this persistent belief that readers aren’t quick to switch their interests to other things and that’s been the opposite of my own personal reading experience so I’m always curious to know what others like to do.

I’m giving away a copy of WARRIOR BETRAYED to one lucky winner along with a $20 Barnes & Noble Gift Card.

  1. I read alot of different types of romance books. I love historicals, paranormals, some contemporaries, mystery/suspence. Pretty much if it falls into the romance field, I would give it a try if the story sounded good to me.

  2. I read almost all books with a romance background, except historicals - maybe I like them more today, but a few years ago they weren't my favorites and I've never read one again...
wish you all the best, Melanie

  3. Addison, welcome to GLIAS. I love your question. I read cross genre, romance, mystery, thrillers, fantasy, YA. And in romance, I read historical, contemporary, paranormal. But my tastes trend. I might go on a historical run. Or read nothing but thrillers for a month then switch to YA.

I think my variety of genres isn't typical. I'll bet a lot of readers like something in particular and often don't stray into new genres.

    Thanks for joining us today!

  4. I read across the romance sub-genres. I especially like romantic suspense, historical romance, paranormal romance and contemporary romance. I sometimes binge on one sub-genre for a month or two but I usually alternate.

  5. Cat:

Thanks so much for having me today!

I love everyone's answers. Like I said in the post, I'm an avid reader and am always excited about trying new things, crossing genres, etc.

To that end, I am absolutely and completely hooked on Gail Carriger's Parisol Protectorate series. Victorian Paranormal Steampunk with a good dose of romance and an alpha male hero who is yummy - it's a fantastic series!

To June's point - it sounded good to me so I checked it out!

  6. Hi Addison,

When it comes to romance, I read historical, paranormal and suspense and any cross-subgenre of those three! When I read contemporary it is usually within the context of another genre like paranormal or suspense. I rarely read straight contemporary unless it's a friend's book!

But I have to tell you, I love the series setting Alaskan Nights and title of your new contemporary, Baby It's Cold Outside!

  8. Addison- I loved seeing someone else who has multiple books going at the same time! My family always looks at me funny when they see books in certain spots and when they try to put them away, I'm saying "NO! I'm reading that!". I'm a total cross-reader and love it even more when they are combined into one book (historical paranormal for example). This blog introduced a series that my daughter and I both enjoy reading together (Maureen McGowan's books) that are great at this. Your books sound right up my alley, so they are going on the list. I can't wait for summer vacation when I get to knock out several!!

  9. I'm a advid read of most all romance genres! Historical, PNR, Contemp, and suspense are my favs. I love to switch them around so I don't get burned out on one particular genre. Sometimes I'm reading two or three books at once! Thanks for sharing with us today!

  11. Hi Addison,

It was great meeting you at the DARA conference. I'm reading Warrior Ascended right now, and, man, I'm hooked! With my middle schooler I'm reading book 7 of the Harry Potter series. Reading book 2 of the Magic Tree House series with my kindergartner. Other than that, I just finished Smash Cut by Sandra Brown and Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo. Oh, and I just finished When Darkness Comes by Alexandra Ivy. I probably read 3-4 books a week and I read pretty much everything. Story gets me. And great characters. Plus I always read authors I meet at conferences.

    Take care,

    Barb

  12. I am pretty picky about what I read. I only like to read historicals, paranormals, YA and some erotica.

  13. I am not picky when it comes to cross-genres in romance. Paranormal, Historical, Contemporary, Mystery, UF, SF.... Yeah, I just love me some romance! :-)

  14. I love to cross read! I love middle school books, most YA, especially paranormals, cozy mysteries, historicals, contemporaries, comedies. As long as it's not miserably sad, I'm in.

I have a soft spot for series. When I love a character or group of people, I want the stories to go on and on.

  15. Hi everyone!

So sorry I've been slow to comment today (that pesky day job just gets in the way!!) :-)

I've loved hearing about everyone's reading habits (Poer Mom & Johanna - yay to us multi-readers!)

June - I hear you on a good story!

Melanie - thanks for the good wishes!

And Stacie - I SO hear you on the bingeing....part of what I love about romance are all the options.

Angi - Hey there!!! I'm not a local girl any longer but Dallas will ALWAYS have a piece of my heart! I'm so excited everyone will be visiting NY for RWA this year.

Barb - it was great to see you at Dreamin in Dallas!

Chelsea & Gillian - I hear you about reading cross-genre. This weekend alone I finished a Meg Cabot middle grade (love Allie Finkle!), a Harlequin Romantic Supsense and Nora Robert's new one, CHASING FIRE.

Danielle - I'm going to do a shameless plug - have you read Jo Davis? She's a dear friend and awesome writer. She's got a steamy erotica series - the SHADO Agency - hot stuff!

Gjillian - thanks for your kind words about the Alaska series - I had so much fun with these characters and the residents of my town, Indigo, Alaska. I really hope readers enjoy them as much as I enjoyed writing them!

Cat - thanks again for the invite!

  18. Addison, I'm a late bloomer (er arrival) and I'm one of the GLIAS crew so DQ me anyway. Just want to say thank you for being here. Your story sounds fabulous and your answers are sensational.

I read across genres. It's like changing a channel. I want to know what's out there and what everyone's writing. I should take lessons from you about football trivia. Well done!

  19. I read mostly historical romances (with a contemporary and paranormal thrown in once in a while), but there are so many possibilities in historical romances that it satisfies my need for variety most of the time. I always wish that there were more books set outside of England and in a wider variety of periods, but historicals are my love, and I don't venture into contemporaries that often. As far as genres outside of romance, I like to read sci-fi/fantasy and historical fiction once in a while, but I still like them to some romance in them. :P
