Get Lost in Shannon Donnelly's Paths of Desire

Paths of Desire
Shannon Donnelly

With too many secrets in her past, and too little future as an actress, Theodosia Newell wants one thing more than all else—security. She’s seen her mother abandoned, her younger brother die, and she’s vowed never to be poor. But then her path crosses that of a man who tempts her to abandon caution and all thought for the future for a passionate affair. Can she find the courage to break from her deepest fears? And will her love prove enough to save them both?

Born with a soul for adventure, David Llewellyn cannot resist a challenge—and his enthusiasm for life is as magnetic as his personality. But two women share his life, and only one can be his. Will his stubborn refusal to make a choice between them lead him to lose everything? Or will he find, in the journey to the lost city he dreams of discovering, a path to a deeper love than he thought possible?

For ten years, the affair between David and Thea goes from passion to love. Lives are changed.  Secrets come out. Marriages end. And new ones begin. Through it all, the desire of two strong-willed people lead them to clash, and to eventually find their own path--to each other and to facing the need and love they share.  From London to Italy to Syria, the Paths of Desire lead them on a journey they must make together.

Jillian: What’s your favorite cartoon character?
Shannon: Bugs Bunny, just because he’s so smart and such a smart-ass. I like the fast talkers. It also doesn’t hurt that he looks so good in a dress and lipstick.

Jillian: Describe your favorite kind of hero to read/write?
Shannon: I love the anti-hero, and I also love the tortured hero, although I don’t really tend to write them. My heroes never seem to have much patience with suffering, but pick up and move on—they also tend to be pretty stoic guys.

Jillian: What was the first story you remember writing?
Shannon: I wrote a story that was way too much like Ray Bradbury (this was in my Ray Bradbury phase). I went on to write a story that was way too much like Georgette Heyer before I found my own voice.

Jillian: Who’s your favorite villain?
Shannon: Has to be Claude Rains from Casablanca. He’s the sympathetic villain who becomes a good guy at the end. I’m a sucker for the bad guy who is really a good guy.

Jillian: What’s something you’d like to tell your fans?
Shannon: That I really do wish I could write as fast as they can read. I feel so bad sometimes that I can’t just turn out a book in a week (that’s a great book in a week).

Jillian: Do you write while listening to music? If so what kind?
Shannon: I love any song that I can play over and over until it becomes white noise. I love Evanesence, and I also listen to odd bits and pieces—it’s usually not something that’t in the Top 10.

Jillian: What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing?
Shannon: Can’t say I’ve had dreams as the result of writing, but I have had dreams that led to writing. The opening of “A Compromising Situation,” the first book I sold, came from a dream.

Jillian: Tea or Coffee? And how do you take it?
Shannon: Morning coffee, afternoon tea (preferably Earl Grey), both with milk (preferably soy milk or non-fat, I’m lactose intollerant in a big way).

Shannon's got a question she'd like to ask readers: Ebook or paper—which is your favorite way to read, and has that changed over the past year or so? Shannon has an e-book of Paths of Desire to giveaway to a commenter today.

  1. Hi Shannon,

Loved your interview especially your Bugs Bunny comment. I got a Kindle for Christmas and my new obsession is "buying" free books on Amazon for it. I am up to over 1000. I got it for my vacation this summer, but I prefer to read paperback books. So, I buy paperbacks and get free e-books! I will buy an e-book if it's less than $3.00 and the paperback price is much higher.

  2. Hi Shannon,

    Love the cover!

I got an e-reader for Christmas (who didn't?) and at first I was kind of skeptical about it. I miss the feel and look of paper, but it's a lot more convenient to carry around than a bulky book, especially if I have a couple of novels I'm reading. I can read different genres without having to swap out actual books.

  3. Welcome to GLIAS Shannon! I really like the title and cover! I read both. And until I get a second e-reader, it's mainly paper for enjoyment (my husband travels with the e-reader).

  5. Hi, Shannon, so glad you could join us at GLIAS. My goodness you have a stable at your place! And Bugs Bunny is one of my favorites as well. I still love holding a book in my hand, especially when I conduct author interviews, but I love the ease of e-books. Thank you for joining us!
