Meet the Ghost Hunters of The Haunting of Maddy Claire

Sarah Piper
Ghost hunter credentials: Trainee

Sarah is a twenty-four year old orphan living a lonely, impoverished life in a tiny flat in London. She works for a temporary agency, doing pointless office jobs, living alone, single and friendless. At the beginning of the book, she hasn’t quite realized that she isn’t leading much of a life.
Sarah is shy, doesn’t think she’s particularly pretty or noticeable, and doesn’t have much confidence in herself. But when she meets Alistair and Matthew and begins ghost hunting, we (and she) start to see what shy people can be made of. Because even shy, quiet girls can be strong, fearless, and particularly courageous when those they care about are threatened.

Matthew Ryder
Ghost hunter credentials: Experienced amateur

Matthew is intense and rough around the edges. After growing up in a blue-collar family, he aimlessly went away to war and lived through experiences that will haunt him for the rest of his life. While at war he met Alistair, and though the two are from very different backgrounds, they became fast friends.
After the war, Matthew doesn’t know what to do with himself, so he follows Alistair ghost-hunting. He’s blunt, outspoken, haunted by his experiences, and very much in need of healing.

Alistair Gellis
Ghost hunter credentials: Expert

According to Simone, she honestly didn’t have anyone specific in mind when she wrote Alistair. "I just saw him perfectly in my mind. Alistair is young, blond, rich, charming, and effortlessly privileged. But Alistair is no snob; he’s funny, easygoing, and fun to be around. His scars from the war are buried very deeply under a breezy exterior. And somewhere deep in there as well is an old heartbreak he's never quite gotten past..."

Ghost hunter tip:

If your house looks like the one above, chances are it's haunted! Lol! If you think you might be living with poltergeists, here's a partial list of phenomena that might indicate your house is haunted: Unexplained noises, doors, cabinets and cupboards opening and closing, lights turning on and off, items disappearing and reappearing, unexplained shadows, strange animal behavior, feelings of being watched. Creepy!

Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson

Ghost hunter credentials:
Plumbers for Roto-Rooter by day, paranormal investigators by night.

After a week of gothic adventure with the release of The Haunting of Maddy Clare, are you ready to do a bit of ghost hunting yourself? Or maybe just curl up with a bag of microwave popcorn and your flat screen tuned to Ghost Hunters. Certainly less scary to watch Jason and Grant.

According to the tagline copy on the poster above 1 in 3 Americans believe in ghosts. Why not share  your favorite ghost story from novels, TV or film or real life? Simone is giving away two copies of The Haunting of Maddy Clare to two commenters.

  4. Congrats Simone on your debut release! I cannot wait to read The Haunting of Maddy Claire!

My all time favorite combination ghost/gothic/romance has to be Wuthering Heights. And especially the filmed BCC version with Tom Hardy as Heathcliff. ;)

  10. I always enjoyed the Canterville Ghost when growing up. It was on TBS or TNT on Sunday morning every now and then. They don't make movies like that anymore. :D
