Big-hearted Chloe Camden is the queen of her

JILLIAN: Since the 2010 Golden Heart, what has been your
most rewarding publishing moment?
SHELLEY: Getting my first WELCOME, CALLER, THIS IS CHLOE fan
letter from a young reader who later tracked me down at a book festival to get
my autograph. She was so excited, her hands were shaking. Which made me so
excited my hands started shaking.
SIMONE: What inspires you daily?
SHELLEY: My three daughters. One of my long-term goals is
to inspire my girls to follow and fight for their dreams.
CAT: What has surprised you the most about being
published?
SHELLEY: How much readers care about my characters. In
CHLOE I introduced a huge cast of quirky high school misfits (think GLEE in a
high school radio station), and I’ve received e-mails from readers wanting to
know so much more about them.
DONNELL: Complete this

SHELLEY: Soak in my
new outdoor hot tub with My Guy and a fruity merlot.
ANGI: What’s the first book you
remember reading?
SHELLEY: The Barrowers by Mary Norton. For weeks I drank
from a thimble and pretended my bed was a matchbox. Yep, I totally lose myself
in stories.
ANGI: What’s your favorite fairy
tale?
SHELLEY: Sleeping Beauty, preferably with pointe shoes and pancake
tutus.
ANGI: What’s your favorite cartoon
character?
SHELLEY: Winnie-the-Pooh hands down. I adore his kind-hearted
spirit, humility, and simplicity.
ANGI: What turns you off like nothing
else?
SHELLEY: Lack of confidence. There’s nothing sexier than a
man confident in himself and his place in this world.
ANGI: Is there a playlist you’d
recommend for reading your latest release?

ANGI: What sound or noise do you
love?
SHELLEY: The sound of my husband and children laughing. At
times I swear their laughter stills my heart.ANGI: Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?
SHELLEY: Adventurous Fairy Tale.
ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of
all time?
SHELLEY: Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Witty dialogue. Exquisite
clothes. New York swank. Audrey Hepburn. Moon River. The Cat.
ANGI: What is your biggest vice?
SHELLEY: Desserts. After every meal I crave a sweet treat.
Sometimes it’s just a square of chocolate or a mint. Lately I’ve been treating
myself to honeycrisp apple wedges and a decadent homemade caramel sauce with butter,
heavy cream, and marshmallows. Heavenly.
ANGI’S GOTTA
ASK: I LOVE deleted scenes and bloopers on DVDs. I haven’t personally had to
cut any scenes from my books, but I have written extra scenes for promotion and
to answer a couple of unfinished questions. I noticed that you have some
“deleted” scenes on your website for WELCOME,
CALLER. Can you share more about why they were left on the cutting room
floor?
SHELLEY’S GOTTA ANSWER: The minor characters were taking over. CHLOE is one of those books
filled with quirky characters driven by strong passions and colorful pasts.
There’s Chloe’s Convers-wearing grandma who has an obsession with Brad Pitt.
Frack, the radio staffer who stutters except when he’s behind a microphone.
Brie, the former best friend, whose perfect life is crumbling. And…um…more.
After the first draft, I realized Chloe and her struggles and triumphs through
this life-changing were getting overshadowed.

ReplyDeleteBy the time I was a teen, I was reading Mills & Boon romances from the UK. Why? I was a voracious reader, the town I was living in didn't have a library and my grandmother decided I was old enough to read romances that she approved. She'd read them, my aunts would read them and they'd place an "OK FOR ANGI" in the corner when it was my turn to take them home. I still have some.
But I also read The Lord of the Rings, The Three Musketeers, every Mary Stuart I could get my hands on. OH to live in a world as a teen when a book would be at the touch of my fingers and not have to wait on a trip to my grandmother's house...wow. I can't imagine the possibilities now.

ReplyDeleteBooks all sort of blur together for me. I read a lot of Sweet Valley High. I think that's also the time I discovered The President's Daughter by Ellen Emerson White, about a girl whose mother was the first female president of the USA. I wanted to be her. The daughter. Not the president.
Hmm... I remember Lois Duncan... Also read lots of sweet valley high.... But my favorite was Anne of Green Gables...

ReplyDeleteMy favorite book from my teenage years would have to be abook that I fell in love with but never wrote it down or remembered the name of it :( to this day i have no clue as to what it was. But i absolutely loved this series of mystery and paranormal happenings and to this day i STILL love books like this and even with the glob of paranormal romance :). But other than the book I can never find again I really did seem to love the books by Sarah Dessen during my high school years I fell in love with those books which started my teen-young adult fiction stories :)
I did not have one FAVE book but when I was in high school I was quite obsessed with Shakepeare. I was the weird kid checking out Shakespeare plays that weren't required reading!!

ReplyDeleteI fell in love with Beauty by Robin Mckinley when I was young. It's a retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story. I was completely obsessed with it.

I grew up with Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries series, I found it easy to relate to the main character Mia because I had problems with algebra just like her and I felt like I was socially awkward like she did because I only had a really close and small but tight knit group of friends that all seemed more outspoken and adventurous than I was. I would have to say Agatha Christie. I read every one of her books when I was a teen. I also liked The Kent Family Chronicles by John Jakes.- an 8 book set. I still have all these books!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book from my teenage years was Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, the truth is it is still my favorite book. I wanted to be Elizabeth Bennet. She was my heroine. She's witty, charming, funny, and she's "real", a lot of us can relate to how she feels, falling for someone we've sworn to hate, battling with insane relatives and people who think they're better than us. Of course I was dreaming to find my own Mr. Darcy (maybe I still)
