Excerpt from To Discover a Divine by Tessa McFionn

Kahlym froze, his voice just as locked as his fingers. He gaped, words unwilling to fall from his mute tongue. “I shall endeavor never to break my word to you, Lady Evainne.”
Her soft fingertips brushed against the back of his hand, lightning chasing the timid touch through his blood as she shook her head.
“No, please. I just want you to treat me like you did before all this weirdness. I’m nothing holy or special or anything like that. What I am is scared and confused, and I don’t understand anything that’s going on around me. I... I could really use a friend right now, someone to tell me how to survive here until...”
Her pause caught him off guard. He trailed his knuckles against her jaw, marveling in the sensation of her soft satiny skin.
“Until we can find you a way home.” The words hurt his heart to utter, but he had to know how she intended to end that thought.
She sighed heavily, blinking at him, her full and lush lips parted. Blood pounded loudly in his ears as he stared hungrily at her, and rational logic fled from his brain. He would dare the fires of Mordan’s realm for just a sampling, and if his immortal soul be damned for it, he would pay the price gladly.
“Goddess forgive me,” he whispered, slanting his mouth over hers, unable to withstand the temptation any longer. He sampled her petal-soft lips and threaded his fingers through her flowing tresses of bloodwine. She moaned against his tender onslaught and dropped her jaw, inviting him further inside. Growling in primal joy, he slid his tongue into her welcoming mouth, surprised and spurred on by her equaling eagerness. Their tongues twisted and dueled as he trailed his hands across her thinly veiled back. She met him passion for passion. Her hands gripped his shoulders and she crawled from her place of safety to sit straddling his hips.
As she wrapped her legs around his waist, he clenched his eyes shut, his mind screaming for him to stop this before he truly was damned beyond all hope. With control he scarcely believed possible, he gently broke the seal of their kiss, his hands cradling her face and he pulled away.
Air rushed in and out of his lungs in loud gasps, and a thin sheen of sweat covered his forehead. When he peeled open his eyes, he found her state just as flustered. Her long lashes hid her deep brown eyes from him, and her breath tickled his chest as she panted heavily.
“I apologize for my loss of—” Her breathy laughter filled the room, tinkling like bells in the cool morning breeze.
“Oh no, you don’t. I am not going to let you apologize for that.” The dark, feathery crescents fluttered upward, and she fixed him with passion-darkened eyes. “The only thing you can apologize for is maybe for stopping when you did.”

Tessa McFionn is a very native Californian and has called Southern California home for most of her life, growing up in San Diego and attending college in Northern California and Orange County, only to return to San Diego to work as a teacher. Insatiably curious and imaginative, she loves to learn and discover, making her wicked knowledge of trivial facts an unwelcomed guest at many Trivial Pursuit boards.

When not writing, she can be found at the movies or at Disneyland with her husband, as well as family, friends or anyone who wants to play at the Happiest Place on Earth. She also finds her artistic soul fed through her passions for theatre, dance and music.

A proud parent of far too many high school seniors and two still living house plants, she also enjoys hockey, reading and playing Words With Friends to keep her vocabulary sharp. She is currently the treasurer of the San Diego chapter of Romance Writers of America and loves spending time working with such amazingly intelligent and creative writers.
