ANGI: Favorite thing about Adam McKenzie
LENA: Adam is just so NICE! Even though he’s definitely a big, strong, alpha guy capable of protecting the heroine, he’s so sweet to her in every way. And he always puts her needs before his. He gets seriously horribly hurt protecting her and he STILL keeps going, through terrible pain, to save her life. I just wanted to cry and hug him and apologize for everything he went through. Adam is one of those heroes who makes you sigh and smile. He’s a keeper, for sure.

ANGI: Favorite thing about Jody Ingram
LENA: She wears glasses, like me! Seriously. I almost never come across heroines in romance novels who wear glasses. As an author, I understand. It IS a pain to remember to mention them when it would make sense in real life to mention them and to remember that she has to wear them to see. But, I think it makes her more relatable. And I was thrilled that the art department put her in glasses on the cover. And they’re green, like her eyes, just like I wrote it. So cool and fun!

ANGI: Favorite thing about Smoky Mountains Ranger
LENA: A lot of my Tennessee books are set in the mountains with the hero and heroine on the run. This one has that, for sure. But it also goes into cities and suburbs and has tons of action. I really had fun with it and loved the variety of settings and situations in this story. And it’s so incredibly emotional. The backstory of the heroine and how it intersects with the mystery is so tragic. I wanted to hug her too. I totally cried writing this book. It’s one of my favorites that I’ve ever written.

ANGI: I know you live in Florida, did you travel to the Smoky Mountains for research?
LENA: I absolutely love the Smoky Mountains. It’s one of my most favorite places to go on vacation. I’ve hiked up to Clingman’s Dome, driven through Cade’s Cove, walked all through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to see waterfalls and old historic buildings hidden throughout the park. Since I’m so familiar with the setting, I didn’t make an additional trip there for this book. But I did do a lot of internet searches to learn more about the National Park Service and the work the rangers do. I also emailed the NPS to ask about their communications in the park. I totally had to rewrite parts of my book after they gave me their reply! But I was proud that I was able to accurately portray how the communications work.

ANGI: Favorite scene in Smoky Mountains Ranger
LENA: This is so hard without giving away spoilers! But there is one scene in the story where the hero has found out some devastating information about the heroine’s past and some awful things that happened to her. It destroys him to know that someone who was supposed to care about her ended up hurting her so deeply. He’s so crushed that he gets drunk and writes down all the ways he wants to torture the person who hurt the heroine. He gets pretty creative! When the heroine discovers what he wrote, it’s a huge turning point in their relationship. It’s when she realizes he truly cares about her and that she has real worth to someone. Her past trauma has really done a number on her self-esteem. This scene is an incredibly emotional scene, as are many in this book. And, yes, I cried while writing it. But it was a good cry.
