THE STORY BLURB:

From “Office Wife” To Love For Life

Landing a job as Austin Fortune’s assistant was a dream come true for Felicity Schafer—until she made the mistake of falling for her boss! But the brooding executive was nursing wounds from a nasty divorce, so she kept her distance. Now, after five years, Felicity seems no closer to a promotion—or to getting Austin to open up. Will giving notice finally get Austin to take notice?

READ A LITTLE, BUY THE BOOK

Chapter 1

Austin Fortune almost missed the plain white envelope at the bottom of the stack of papers his assistant Felicity Schafer had set on his desk. After he’d read the letter, he wished he’d never seen it and for a moment, he considered pretending as if he hadn’t read it.

Maybe it would just disappear.

Instead, the reality of it danced around him like illuminated dust motes.

Felicity, his gatekeeper, his right hand, the person who kept him organized and on track ahead of the fray, had tendered her resignation.

“Is this a bad joke?” he muttered aloud, trying it on for size.

But no. Even though Felicity was good-natured, it would’ve been out of character for her to kid around about something like this.

“She’s leaving me.” Uttering the words out loud made it sound personal. It wasn’t personal—it was work, but it sure felt personal.

He looked up from the note and watched her through the glass wall of his office. She was engrossed in something on her computer. He didn’t know what. He could see her in profile. Her head was bowed over her keyboard, her dark blond hair a curtain hiding her face.

What the hell was he supposed to do without her? Every morning when he got to the office, she had a daily briefing typed up and waiting for him on his desk along with his coffee and a smoothie with energy booster. She remembered birthdays, anniversaries and the minutiae of family and client particulars that elevated and solidified his business relationships and could prove costly if forgotten.  She was always game for brainstorming new concepts and abstract business angles. Ultimately assisting with client presentations.

Plain and simple, Felicity made him look good and was always there to help him succeed.
It wasn’t just a matter of hiring someone new. Felicity was a rare find. She had an uncanny ability to anticipate his every need—even before he knew what he needed. In all fairness, he paid her well and she seemed happy. So, why was she leaving him?

He skimmed the letter again looking for clues, but in true Felicity form, it was short and to the point:

Dear Austin,

Please accept this letter as notification that I am leaving my position with Fortune Investments at the end of the month.

I’ve left the date open, so I can be of assistance during the transition.

Sincerely,
Felicity Schafer

Austin reread the note twice more, making sure he’d read it right. Once he’d absorbed it, he had a good idea of how he might fix it. He pressed the button on the intercom.

“Felicity, could you come into my office, please?”

“Sure.”

A moment later, she was standing in his doorway.

“What do you need?” she asked.

“If you wanted a raise,” he said, “all you had to do was ask.”

She wrinkled her nose. “A raise?”

“Of course, you just had your half-year review and got a bump in salary, but if it wasn’t enough, if you want more money, we can talk about it.”

She gave her head a quick shake. “Who said anything about a raise?”

He picked up her letter. “I thought maybe that’s what this was about. I mean why else would you resign?”

Her cheeks flushed, and her mouth fell open before she snapped it shut, into a thin line and folded her arms across her chest. She looked at him as if he had insulted her.

How could offering someone more money be insulting?

He leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms, mirroring her posture.

“Austin, you’ve always been generous when it comes to my salary. But I’m graduating with my MBA at the end of the month. I don’t need a graduate degree to be someone’s personal assistant. It’s time I moved on.”

“Do you have another job?”

“No, not yet. I’m going to start interviewing soon. I wanted to be up-front with you about it.”
“Thanks,” he said.

She flinched. He realized he might have sounded sarcastic. Maybe a very small part of him had meant it that way. Was he supposed to be happy he was losing her?

He raked his hand through his hair. This was not the way he wanted to start his Friday. It certainly wasn’t the way he wanted to end his week.

He gestured for her to sit down in one of the chairs on the other side of his desk.
She sat and folded her hands in her lap. “I’ve loved working for you and Fortune Investments, but I’ve worked hard to get this degree.”

He didn’t say anything because he was afraid what he wanted to say would sound wrong. He’d always prided himself on being fair.

“I hope you can understand that I want more than being someone’s secretary for the rest of my working life,” she went on. “Because that’s what I am. We can dress it up and call me your assistant, but when it comes down to it, I’m your secretary. It’s been a great job, but now I need more.”

He held up his hand.

“I get it,” he said. “I do. Congratulations on accomplishing this, Felicity. I’m happy for you. I know how hard you’ve worked. You’re smart and you’re creative and I understand that a person with an MBA is way overqualified to be a personal assistant. You’d be wasting your potential staying in this position. But that doesn’t make it any easier for me because I don’t want to lose you.”

He held her gaze and her expression softened.

“I mean did you expect me not to be upset about the prospect of losing you?” He held up his hand again to signal that the question was rhetorical. “But that’s me being selfish. This isn’t about me. It’s about you. What do you want to do with your degree?”

“My undergraduate degree is in advertising. I’ve always wanted to work in that field.”

“You’d be good at it,” he said. “You’d be good at anything you decided to do.”

Her cheeks turned pink again. She looked down and then back up at him.

“Is there anything I can do to convince you to stay with Fortune Investments?”

“I don’t know. Are there any opportunities here?”

“What if I talk to Miles and see if we can create a position for you? I’m not making any promises, but would you consider staying if we could come up with something?”

Felicity smiled. “It depends. Would it mean doing advertising work in addition to everything I do for you?”

Austin laughed. “You know me too well.”

“I know I do.”

“How am I supposed to get by without you, Felicity?”

She shrugged. “You did fine before I came on board. You’ll survive.”

No, he hadn’t been fine before she came onto the scene. His life had been a mess, a big tumbleweed of mistakes and misjudgments that had cost him dearly. It had taken him five years to get himself back on track after his disastrous marriage. Sure, he’d come through it intact and he’d learned a lot about himself and life. Yes, he would be fine on his own, but he didn’t want to lose her.

WHAT’S UP NEXT FOR NANCY?

The first book in my brand new cozy mystery series, The Wedding Bell Mysteries, will launch in early October 2019.

In November 2019, the first book in my new Special Edition series, Savannah Sisters, will hit the shelves.

Please stay tuned for more information.

Now, back to A FORTUNATE ARRANGEMENT

This book is part of Special Edition’s beloved Fortunes of Texas series.  It’s the fifth installment of the 2019 series, Fortunes of Texas: Destined to Meet. Even though it’s part of a series, my book stands alone.

When I host other authors on the GLIAS blog, I interview them. I thought I’d answer some of the same questions I ask them.

What’s your favorite trait about you hero, Austin Fortune, in A FORTUNATE  ARRANGEMENT?  He’s tragically flawed, but he still has a great heart. He made a major mistake when he was just starting out in the business world. Since then, he’s been extra hard on himself trying to atone for what he did, and making sure that he doesn’t mess up again.

If you couldn’t be a writer anymore, what profession would you take up?

I majored in journalism and minored in art. I’d love to devote more time to my art…or I’d love to be a pastry chef – even though I’m not classically trained. I wouldn’t want to work in a restaurant kitchen, but maybe in a specialty bakery.

Is writing or story-telling easier for you?

I see stories everywhere. In fact, to me all the world is a story. Coming up with the plots is the fun (and challenging) part.

Where do you read and how often?

I read every day. I love both print/e-book and audio books.

Do you write while listening to music? If so what kind?

Always! However, I can’t listen to music with words when I write. I have an instrumental playlist that I listen to when I work, and it serves as a “call to write,” and it helps me get into the zone.

What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing?

I am so grateful for the gift of spending my days doing what I really love…. writing stories that make other people smile.

Does your heroine, Felicity Schafer have any of your character traits?

A FORTUNATE ARRANGEMENT is absolutely a work of fiction. But Felicity is very focused on getting things done. I’m very much that way.  I have a schedule and I try very hard to stick to it.

I’m giving away a Kindle copy of my first Special Edition, ACCIDENTAL PRINCESS.

I WANT TO KNOW:  Tell me what you’re reading now.

Welcome USA TODAY Bestselling Author Tara Taylor Quinn

CHRISTMAS BABIES AND A GIVEAWAY!

I’m so happy to be here with you all today!! It’s my first visit and I’ve really enjoyed my initial look around, finding a lot of jewels. I’m heading back for more in-depth exploration! I’ve been at this writing gig a long time and I love that I can still find new perspective, aha moments, and books in which I can lose myself and find myself in the process.

I’m currently seeing my 86th and 87th Harlequin books published. (89th and 90th overall.) And I’m a newbie, too, having just joined the sisterhood over at Harlequin Special Edition. In August I celebrated my first SE release with Her Lost and Found Baby. Book one of The Daycare Chronicles. This month it’s number two with An Unexpected Christmas Baby, and then next month, Fortune’s Christmas Baby. That’s a lot of baby!!

An Unexpected Christmas Baby
Baby with the ttq spin on it. I write intense, emotional fiction. An Unexpected Christmas Baby, Book Two of the Daycare Chronicles, is on WalMart shelves right now. And I’m worried sick about it. (I’ve got that part of the writer’s life down pat.) It’s such a cute cover. The title is great. Both reflect my story, but probably aren’t what new readers will expect when they pick up the book. The story is about a heroine who grew up with privilege and couldn’t have the one thing she wanted most. And a hero who grew up in a trailer with holes in the floor and a druggie mother – when he wasn’t being shoveled around the foster care system. They’ve both made the most of the lives they were given. They both have very clear plans set in motion for their futures. Plans they’ve made consciously and work toward with determination. She’s determined to find the thief stealing from the family business and the hero is her prime suspect. He’s been told his mother has just died in prison – giving birth to a girl that she’s bequeathed to him – and needs his job more now than ever.

Fortune’s Christmas Baby
And then, coming to the shelves immediately after An Unexpected Christmas Baby is Fortune’s Christmas Baby.  Part of the famous Fortune’s of Texas, this book also took on the ttq flair. A secret baby romance became an intensely emotional roller coaster as two people from vastly different cultures try to figure out a way to be parents while living in two different cities in two different states. During their brief fling he’d lied to her about who he was. And who he wasn’t. She lost her parents to his world and just can’t go there. His whole family is there and he can’t leave.

I love Christmas. To the point that I keep at least one little Christmas memento up in every room in my house all year long. Usually subtle, other’s might not even know they’re there. But I do. They’re my reminders of what I believe in most – the hope and love that are the only road to true joy and happy moments. The hope and love that are the only power that can truly sustain us. To me, that hope and love come out in others most strongly at Christmas time. The magic that transcends regular daily life and routine – brought alive in a child when she hopes that Santa will bring her something that her parents might not otherwise get for her – is real. It’s the embodiment of the ability to hope inside every one of us. And in the love that grants us things beyond what we can earn and provide for alone. Writing Christmas stories is a natural for me. It follows that I’ve done a LOT of them!

To celebrate the releases of my first two Special Edition Christmas stories, I’m giving away two of my more recent Harlequin Superromance Christmas stories here today. A Family For Christmas (another intensely emotional Christmas read involving a mother who’s on the run, believing that she killed her six-year-old daughter) and The Holiday Visitor, a pen pal romance that isn’t meant to ever be more than that. This giveaway will be eBook only to make it open internationally. In order to be entered to win, simply share this post to any of your social media outlets. More shares, more entries! To make certain your shares are accounted for, leave a comment here, letting me know about them!

JC Harroway - Talking About DARE-ing Heroes and Heroines!

Ready for a little more Harlequin DARE? I’m so happy to have my fellow DARE author and all round fabulous New Zealander, JC Harroway with me to talk about her latest DARE, One Night Only!

About JC Harroway

Lifelong romance addict JC Harroway lives in New Zealand. Writing her very real obsession with happy endings and the endorphin rush they create. You can follow her via her website, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

The romantic vs the cynic.
Chemistry is all they have in common!

New York lawyer Ash has moved to London to escape his demons – and one red–hot night with gorgeous stranger Essie is the perfect distraction! He's ready to forget about her entirely...until she walks into his office for her first day at work. She's a romantic, seeking her happily–ever–after – he's a distrustful cynic who can't commit. Could a sexy fling be the best mistake of their lives?

Read a little…

Essie slipped her hand into the back pocket of his jeans, her fingers pressing into his tightly toned backside. Where had her uncharacteristic bravery come from? The desire for something more than the dribs and drabs she’d tolerated from her no-good ex?

Her ex’s idea of foreplay had been a mandatory squeeze of the boob. And to her shame, she’d accepted such lazy, shoddy attention.

All the more reason to explore a one-night stand with the drool-worthy, confident American. She’d gain some much-needed experience in the one-night-stand stakes, and hopefully score herself the kind of orgasm that only existed in her world as a mythical will-o’-the-wisp, and afterwards they’d move on having both had a good time. Unless Ash was a serial killer, it was a win-win situation. She absorbed the foreign, heady thrill of his big warm body next to hers. Not that it was cold—her shivers originated purely from anticipation.

The best kind of shivers.

She sucked in a stuttering breath—she’d never felt more reckless. And, if she was honest, she also felt a little embarrassed. There was no law that stated that, before her twenty-fifth birthday, she should have experienced at least one night of no-strings sex, but, as she touted herself as something of a relationship expert, didn’t she owe it to the readers of her relationship psychology blog to experience what all the fuss was about?

Ash’s hand looped around her shoulder. She reached up and clasped his fingers. They grinned at each other, Essie’s belly jolting in time with her excitable pulse.

No serious scientist could rely solely on academic theory. She could finally verify her years of extensive research with some cold, hard, scientific data.

Surely he must be able to hear the blood whooshing through her head?

Because in practical terms, what did she really know about relationships, especially the functional kind?

Her face fell at the momentary wobble. Her one serious boyfriend during uni had left her practically swearing off the opposite sex for good on the grounds she clearly couldn’t spot a decent relationship candidate if he was stark naked in front of her wearing a pick me, I’m a safer than houses bet hat.
A trait she’d inherited from her mother perhaps… The woman had, after all, procreated with Essie’s lying, cheating, deserting father and spent many years playing second fiddle to his actual wife, his real family.

Not that Essie had known all that back then. She’d simply been a girl who desperately missed her beloved father while he’d worked overseas for long stretches of time. Clearly she and her mother shared a desperate-for-love vibe that usually sent men running.

But Ash wasn’t running.

And she wasn’t looking for a relationship. Just sex. She’d gleaned from Ash’s subtext that, like her, he was only interested in a one-night thing. She shoved the buzzkill thoughts from her mind, focussing on the specimen of manly perfection beside her. Exotic Ash. A gentleman. Funny, intelligent, and interested in what she had to say.

So different from her ex, and she’d wasted two years in that flawed relationship.

Her throat tightened.

Perhaps she was ready for a change. It was, after all, the eve of a brand-new chapter of her life—her new job working for her until recently estranged half-brother began tomorrow. Or perhaps it was just charming, sophisticated, sexy-as-sin Ash with his crinkle-eyed smile, his quick wit and his tales of New York that earned him a place at the top of Essie’s bucket list.

Nothing at all to do with his muscular physique and his dark good looks, which were enough to attract smiles and stares everywhere they’d gone today. And she instinctively knew, as if it were stamped on her overworked ovaries, that Ash would be phenomenal between the sheets. High-calibre screaming orgasms—another experience sadly lacking from her rather pathetic repertoire.

Let’s talk…

Avril: Can you share with us how the story of One Night Only unfolded for you?
JC: Believe it or not, this story originated from a seed of true events. Last year I visited London and not only did I see a sexy stranger sitting in the sun with his eyes closed, my phone also died while I was trying to take a photo, and someone else kindly offered to take a photo for me. Put those two together and I had the seed for the meeting between Ash and Essie. Of course, this is also the third book of three linked books, so the story had to evolve from there. Ash is Harley from Her Dirty Little Secret's sister.

Avril: What’s the one standout JC Harroway trademark?
JC: I'm not really sure I have one! I am passionate about promoting consent in a positive way in my books, so I consciously try to make the sexy times full of Yes, yes, yesses! And with my medical background, I'm all about safe sex, even when it's fictional! So My heroes and heroines always look out for each other.

Avril: What do you look for in a romance heroine?
JC: I love my heroine in One Night Only, Essie. She's such a fun character—bubbly and smart—and she doesn't take herself too seriously! Also she's not afraid to encourage Ash, our hero to laugh at himself either, probably what makes him fall for her! As a general rule, for me, heroines need to know what they want and not be afraid to go out and get it. When I'm creating my heroines, I think of the type of woman I would have as a friend— someone to have a glass of wine and a laugh with.

Avril: What’s coming up next?
JC: I have three DAREs out in 2019. My Faulkner Brothers series, which is set in Chelsea, London and based on three single brothers who run a hotel empire. Lots more yummy, suited, sexy heroes…

Avril: Can you give us five books in your TBR pile?
JC: The most recent five books on my kindle are….

Destroyed, Jackie Ashenden
Under Pressure, Lori Foster
Sinfully Mine, Kendall Ryan
True Refuge, Annabelle McInnes
Getting Lucky, Avril Tremayne

So romance, romance and a bit more romance!

JC is giving away a copy of One Night Only - print or e-book, your preference. To go into the draw, tell us your favourite type of heroine and enter the Rafflecopter giveaway!

One night was supposed to ease her craving…

But after one taste, she's hooked!

Abby loves her new life working at Sydney's finest patisserie. Working alongside brooding new man–in–charge Tanner is an unexpected but delicious challenge, especially as each night their attraction only grows hotter!

But Tanner's past is as dark as the ink on his skin…he'll let her get closer than close in the bedroom, but dare Abby go deeper?

Read a little...

‘We should head back to the patisserie,’ Abby said, as we exited the hospital. ‘Makayla, one of the staff, will be run off her feet.’

‘Not so fast, Sweet Thing.’ My hand shot out, touching the small of her back, and a shock akin to electricity sizzled up my arm. ‘We need to get acquainted first.’

She stared at me like I’d suggested we get naked to do it and I grinned. The thought wasn’t totally unpalatable, considering how much fun it would be to rattle that impenetrable faƧade.

‘I meant let’s grab a coffee at that cafĆ© down by the water, but if you had something else in mind I’m up for it.’ I threw in a wink, knowing it would rile her more than anything else I could say.

Predictably, she drew herself up to an impressive five-ten. Tall for a woman. I preferred them petite and pliable, not big and bristly.

‘Sweet thing isn’t my name,’ she said, chin tilted, haughty as hell.

‘Would you like it to be?’ I leaned in, expecting her to jump back like a startled cat.

When she held her ground and glared at me with those big blue eyes, an unusual azure similar to a glacier I’d seen in New Zealand once, I had to admire her a little.

‘Here’s the deal. I love my job and I respect your brother. He gave me a chance when no else would and I’m not going to screw this up over some big-mouthed Romeo who can’t keep it in his pants. Got it?’

She jabbed me in the chest with a finger. She actually jabbed me. And I admired her all the more for having the balls to stand up to my in-your-face innuendos to get a rise out of her.
‘So quit the bullshit flirting and let’s talk business.’

I couldn’t resist one more. ‘Dirty business?’

‘Jeez, you’re annoying,’ she muttered under her breath as she stomped away.

Okay, so maybe I’d pushed too far but getting her so wound up had its advantages. Namely giving me an unimpeded view of her ass.

My earlier assessment had been correct. It was sweet. Taut and rounded, highlighted to perfection in the tight black pants worn by staff at the patisserie.

The patisserie…

I’d promised Remy to ensure it ran smoothly in his absence and I always kept my promises. I might be a prick who didn’t let anyone get too close but Remy was different. He was my blood.

And I owed him.

Which meant I needed to play nice with little miss sweet cheeks.

Let's Talk...

Avril: I love the title Sweet Thing – how well does it encapsulate the story?
Nicola: Considering the bulk of the story takes place in a patisserie in Sydney, I think it’s perfect. Throw in the fact that Tanner calls Abby ‘Sweet Thing’ to rile her and I knew it had to stick. I came up with all the titles before I’d written the stories and each one—Sweet Thing, Wild Thing, Play Thing—suit the stories perfectly.

Avril: I know this is book one in a series – how do the novels connect?
Nicola: In Sweet Thing, Abby’s best friend is Makayla. Mak is a dancer trying to catch a break on stage and supplementing her income by working part-time at the patisserie. Hudson is Tanner’s best friend and works as a manager of Tanner’s nightclub. Mak and Hudson were once best friends but haven’t spoken for years after a major falling out. In Wild Thing, they reconnect…and how!

Charlotte is Mak’s flat-mate and the shy accountant meets her match in her sexy boss Alex in Play Thing. So characters from Sweet Thing are interwoven in all three books.

Avril: Category – mainstream – indie – young adult. How do you juggle all the balls?
Nicola: My juggling skills aren’t what they once were. As my kids grow older, the demands on my time are greater so a few of those balls have been dropped. While I love writing YA, I’m not doing that anymore. Similarly with indie. So these days I’m writing category romance and mainstream, mostly women’s fiction.

Avril: Do you have a ‘trademark’ – something people will recognize from one Nicola Marsh book to the next?
Nicola: Snappy dialogue. As a writer and a reader, I’m a sucker for quick-wit and flirty chatter, and readers have identified that repeatedly in my books, which I love.

Avril: Do you have a favorite trope?
Nicola: Opposites attract. I love pitting characters against each other who seemingly have nothing in common but end up discovering they mesh regardless.

Avril: What’s your pet hate as a romance reader?
Nicola: When there’s no real conflict keeping a couple apart and their disagreement can be solved with a simple conversation.
