Meet Susan Hayes

The greatest thing about a reader's conference is getting to know the people who love to read. The second greatest thing...getting to know the people who write the stories. SUSAN HAYES is a new friend of mine. LLLLLOVE this CANUK!!!  Bet you will, too!

ALL IN
When love is the prize, the only way to win is to go all in.

The Resource Wars may have ended, but for the cyborgs created to fight in them, the battle for acceptance is far from over. Former soldiers Toro and Jaeger have been on the move since they left military service. They’re looking for more than their next payday; they want to find a place to call home.

Cynder Armas co-owns the Nova Club with her two cyborg siblings. The club is more than her business; it’s her home— filled with everyone she cares about. Life on The Drift isn’t easy, but it is profitable, and it keeps her too busy to dwell on the losses in her past.

When these three battle-scarred warriors meet, there’s no denying their attraction, but it takes more than a spark to keep a fire burning. To hold onto each other, they’ll have to find a way to let go of their old lives and embrace the future, together.

Jaeger stopped outside another locked door. “We’re here.”
He passed his hand over another scanner, and the door slid open. Warm air flowed around them, carrying the scent of green, growing things. It had been so long since he stepped foot on a planet, Toro had almost forgotten what it was like to breathe something other than recycled air.
“What in the worlds?” Cynder’s voice was tinged with wonder as she peered past the doorway to the wonderland beyond.
The door opened out onto a landing near the bottom of a sphere more than fifty feet across. The walls were lined with row after row of brackets, all of them full of plants bathed in constant light from the hundreds of lamps shining down on them from a few feet above the tallest leaves. The brackets were divided into sections by marked pathways, and a catwalk spanned the midsection of the sphere, linking to of the main paths.
Jaeger gestured for Cynder to enter the sphere. “Welcome to Astek Station’s atmospheric farm, or as I’ve decided to call it, the atrium.”
“I had no idea this place existed. I’ve seen the outside of the station plenty of times, and I’ve never seen any sign this is here at all. How did I miss it?” Cynder stepped over the threshold, then turned and beckoned them to join her inside, her face wreathed in smiles.
“I wondered about that myself, so I looked up the plans for these stations. It turns out that only half of it is visible from the outside.” He pointed over their heads. “That portion appears as a hemisphere at the bottom of the station. The part we’re standing on is inside, out of sight.”
Toro groaned. “We’re standing upside-down right now? Is that why we were walking on the wall earlier?”
“They do some funky things with the gravity down here. I get it; they can use more of the space this way, but only away from the inhabited areas.”
“I can’t believe they still use organics as part of the oxygenation process. No one does that anymore, do they?” Cynder wandered over to the edge of the landing and ran a gentle hand along the leaves of one of the plants. “I’d forgotten how pretty greenery could be.”
“This station is older than it looks. The system still works, so I guess no one’s bothered to modernize it.” Jaeger pointed to a section of plants that looked different from the others. “I think that’s a herb garden, and on the other side I found some flowering plants I suspect are what they sell at the florist shops on the station.”
“I always wondered how they managed to get fresh flowers this far out. My brothers will cry when I tell them they’ve been spending a fortune on posies that were grown under their feet instead of on a planet.”
“I doubt it. If flowers make Zura happy, I bet Luke and Kit would pay any price. They clearly love their wife and would do whatever it took to please her,” Toro said.
“You got that right. She could probably ask for a moon of her own, and they’d try to get it for her. Lucky for all of us, Zura’s not that kind of woman. If she was, the club might be bankrupt by now.”
Toro crossed the landing to stand behind her, trapping her between himself and the plants she was caressing. “What would it take to please you, Cyn? What would make you happy?”
She glanced back over her shoulder and smiled at him. “I’m a simple girl. I don’t need flowers, or moons, or presents of any kind. I don’t take time for myself very often. My brothers would say I don’t take it at all. Spending time with the two of you is making me happy. No club. No worries about unlicensed pharma, or security, or balancing the books. More of this would make me very happy.”
“We can do that. All I need for you to make me happy right now is for you to tell me I can kiss you again.”
     “Yes.”

SUSAN HAYES lives out on the Canadian west coast surrounded by open water, dear family, and good friends. She’s jumped out of perfectly good airplanes on purpose and accidently swum with sharks on the Great Barrier Reef.

If the world ends, she plans to survive as the spunky, comedic sidekick to the heroes of the new world, because she’s too short and out of shape to make it on her own for long.

Last Chance #3
Read a little, Buy the book

High pitched whining followed by someone running down the hall upstairs made it clear her apartment building was on fire. The three-story building was at least a hundred years old, one of the reasons she moved into it, but it would go up like a tinder box.

Stay calm. Nothing ever came of panicking. It’s no different than the time you were on that cliff with the baby deer.

She turned on her lamp before running through her bedroom. As she rounded the corner into her tiny vestibule, she hit her bare thigh on the small table against the wall. Stupid thing. Rubbing her leg, she finally reached her apartment door. She unlocked both locks and pulled it open.

Smoke billowed in, smothering all her senses before she slammed the door shut, coughing as the foreign matter filled her lungs. Not good.

Quickly, she ran into the kitchen, grabbed the hand towel and soaked it with water. She brought it to her face and hurried back to her door.

Here goes nothing.

As she opened the door, smoke streamed in and she dropped into a crouch. Stay low. Remember the barn fire in Maryland. Smoke rises. After the initial billow, she found she could stand without too much smoke. Looking up, she froze.

Hell. I’m in hell. Black smoke covered the hallway ceiling, billowing like an upside down wave, slowly lowering. Yellow flickers lit it sporadically like heat lightning in the clouds on a summer evening.

PASSION OF SLEEPY HOLLOW

Kat closed the door to her room and leaned against it. Her heart raced so fast it could beat a squirrel up a tree. Licking her lips, she closed her eyes. Braeden’s kiss brought back all those wonderful feelings she used to have with Brom. The ones where her toes curled inside her buckle shoes and her body quivered.

She crossed her arms over her stomach. She hadn’t had those with anyone else since. Not even slightly. What was she going to do? She’d been desperate to get away, and now he would be staying the night. She opened her eyes. Staying in her room. Oh Lord.
Moving to her chest at the end of the bed, she pulled out a pillow and threw it on the floor. She’d already changed the sheets because he was supposed to leave. It had been so hard not to bury her face in his unique scent. It reminded her of the forest after a rainstorm, musky, comforting, making her want to snuggle in for a winter hibernation.
Ugh, what was she thinking? He was Stephen’s brother, a Newtimer, and he would leave tomorrow.

Oh no. The village would be long gone by then. What would happen to Braeden then? She glanced toward the door, listening to the floorboards creak under his weight. Quickly, she pulled her quilt from the chest and grabbed the pillow.

Too late.

The door opened and he ducked inside, obliterating the opening from her sight. He stood stock-still, studying her once again. The lantern light softened his features, proving how different he really appeared from Brom.

Straightening her shoulders, she stepped toward him. “Your room is all set. I’ll just make my bed in the parlor.”

He didn’t move, and she couldn’t go through the door unless he did.
“Braeden? You need to step aside for me to leave.”

“And what if I don’t want you to leave?”

Her breath caught in her throat as tingling sped from her head to her toes. She swallowed hard. “What do you mean?” She turned away to give herself a moment without looking at his handsome visage. “Did I forget something?”

The floor creaked behind her and she stepped forward to inspect the water pitcher. If he touched her again, she’d be lost. She turned to review the bed. “I assure you these are clean sheets.”

The door closed.

She spun and the quilt knocked the pitcher off the table onto the floor with a crash. “Oh no.” She knelt, suddenly wanting to cry, though the pitcher wasn’t anything special. In fact, it had a crack along the handle and was bound to break soon anyway.

“Come. It’s okay.” Braeden’s hands on her arms helped her to stand and sent fire through her already taut nerves.

Gently, he enveloped her in his arms. Her heart slowed as a feeling of rightness settled through her. With her face against his chest, she could hear his strong heartbeat.

“Kat.” The soft-spoken word came from deep within him and she met his gaze. “Don’t be mad at me.”

The loneliness she glimpsed in his eyes undid her. Before she could think about what she did, she hooked her hand around his neck and pulled him forward for a kiss.

Get Lost in Love & Punishment, Beauty and the Beasts MC style.

Once upon a time…
Bel was a happy girl with loving parents. Now she lives for revenge. At her father’s urging a plan is set in motion which quickly spins out of control. Expecting to be used and abused by The Beasts MC, who are known for their orgiastic ways, she is prepared to accept her fate in order to execute her mission.

The time has come to even the score with the men responsible for her mother’s death.
Nate and Liam, leaders of The Beasts, have their hands full ensuring the survival of their people as they sell Beast Brew to survive in a city crumbling around them. When a Rose MC member is plucked from their care the laws of Epsilon demand the perpetrator forfeit his life. But then the leader of The Devil’s Disciples’ daughter offers herself in exchange for his life, and they can’t refuse the beauty’s plea.

Once she’s pressed between them they know they’re keeping her for their own, but first they must figure out why she’s there.

Sorcha Mowbray is a mild mannered office worker by day…okay, so she is actually a mouthy, opinionated, take charge kind of gal who bosses everyone around; but she definitely works in an office. At night she writes romance so hot she sets the sheets on fire! Just ask her slightly singed husband.

She is a longtime lover of historical romance, having grown up reading Johanna Lindsey and Judith McNaught. Then she discovered Thea Devine and Susan Johnson. Holy cow! Heroes and heroines could do THAT? From there, things devolved into trying her hand at writing a little smexy. Needless to say, she liked it and she hopes you do too!

Read an excerpt from Love & Punishment:

The driver stopped before the crumbling amphitheater where concerts and plays were once
staged. Tonight’s performance featured her as the star. Her own personal tragedy would play out
in living shades of black and gray before the High Council. In the years since The Wave, a
civilization-crushing electromagnetic pulse, and the riots after, the council, consisting of a
member from each surviving territory, sat in judgment over their EpiCenter. Tonight they judged
her father.

Something stank. Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with the charges against her father and
everything to do with the pungent chemical smell of the rancid fuel used to power the
patchwork-metal car she’d climbed out of. The entrance loomed ahead, the embodiment of
things to come, and drew her forward until the rumble of bikes announced more arrivals. Damn,
she had hoped to be the last to arrive so she could slip inside to wait for what she expected to
unfold. Instead, she found herself transfixed by two men who sat astride their sleds as though the
engines rumbled for them alone. The matte-black beasts were harsh and angular, yet beautiful.
From the sleek elongated fronts to the extra-wide tire in the rear, the bikes were designed to draw
attention. And still, the men commanded every eye in the parking lot.

Of course, as the only person left, her eyes answered their call. One dark and one fair. She
saw little actual skin, yet she would have said with absolute certainty both men were packed with
muscle. Something about them made any other notion laughable.
Blood thrummed through her veins while her pulse raced. Breath harsh with some unnamed
reaction, she could only compare the sensation to having spent two hours sparring with an
unbeatable opponent. The air wheezed from her lungs in painful gasps, her muscles trembled,
and a fine sweat broke out across her skin. The dampness between her thighs? Not something she would discuss with anyone. Not even her sisters, Briana and Charlene.

Then the emblems sewn on the back of their jackets caught her eye, drawing a curse from her
that would have gotten her smacked across the face by her father. Their jackets proudly
displayed a grinning skull with a barbed-wire halo and black wings. A snarling wolf in red and
black appeared in the boney head where eyes should have been and the words The Beasts MC
were emblazoned over the top and bottom of the image. Once she knew they were the enemy
their appeal dulled, though did not die. With a sigh of regret, she turned and strolled through the
gates of the venue. They were affiliated with the wrong club. Lived in the wrong territory.
Answered to the wrong man.

She eased into the terraced bowl, hiding in the shadows for the moment. And there were a
great many shadows despite the giant torches jutting from the walls. The men from outside
mostly forgotten, she focused on the task at hand. Maybe if her luck held she might have an
opportunity to meet one of the men she’d seen earlier before she exacted her revenge. Then
again, it wouldn’t matter because after she did her job she would be branded Beast Enemy Number One.

Assuming she got to live.

Interview with Sorcha Mowbray:

Jillian: What’s the first book you remember reading?
Sorcha: Curious George Goes to The Hospital. I really wanted an xray after that. LOL!

Jillian: What’s your favorite fairy tale?
Sorcha: Beauty and The Beast has always been a favorite. Largely because she ends up rescuing him.

Jillian: Where do you read and how often?
Sorcha: All the time. Standing in line, walking to work, riding the trolley, on the couch, in the bed...the bathroom. I have yet to find a place I can't read. :-)

Jillian: What was the first story you remember writing?
Sorcha: My friend and I wrote our own version of Sweet Valley High. We had a notebook we passed back and forth, each of us taking a turn writing a chapter. It was so much fun to see what she wrote each time!

Jillian: What’s something you’d like to tell your fans?
Sorcha: I love hearing from you! Drop me an email, leave a comment on my site, say hi on Facebook, whatever. But I love to hear from you!

Jillian: Do you write while listening to music? If so what kind?
Sorcha: I do listen to music. Usually I build a station on Pandora for whatever book I'm writing. So, for series I have a station geared to that series. One Night with A Cowboy is all country and Tales From Epsilon is a hard driving rock station called Beasts MC.
Station links:   Beasts MC   ONWAC

Jillian: Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?
Sorcha: I do sometimes. I try not to read the really negative ones...I don't want to paralyze myself. But I am always open to constructive criticism and I love hearing about the good stuff. LOL!

Commenters: Do you have a favorite fairytale? Perhaps one you'd like to read as an adult romance? I can think of several. I'm going to share right now…
