Donnell talks about her November release, Betrayed

When I settled on an idea to write my third suspense for Bell Bridge Books, I wanted it to be different than the first two that I’d written.  Oh, it would still surround my theme of SUSPENSE TOO CLOSE TO HOME, it would still have a hunky cop hero and a strong female protagonist, but I wanted to stretch as a writer.  I wanted to write about something I had little experience with -- betrayal.

I’d never been betrayed.  Oh, maybe in grade school when a classmate decided she liked someone else better, or maybe later in life when a relationship didn't work out and I ended up with a broken heart.  But those were life lessons, right?   What did it mean to suffer the ultimate human disappointment?

I would find out in writing BETRAYED.

About the story:

When Oklahoma City resident, Irene Turner learns the incomprehensible, that the stillborn baby she delivered 28-years earlier is alive, she takes the evidence to where her daughter now lives—Denver Colorado.

Detective Nate Paxton can’t believe what Irene’s evidence shows him.  Kinsey Masters, a world-class athlete, raised by a prominent Denver family, an unattainable woman he’s known and loved for years, was stolen at birth.

Irene Turner, Nate Paxton, and Kinsey Masters are united in a sordid conspiracy.  But, it’s who the conspirators turn out to be that will leave the trio shaken and in disbelief.  Irene’s foundation of trust will be ripped from its core, as kidnapping, murder, and a thirst for revenge lead her to learn she’s been betrayed.

A mother, told her baby's death was a lie.

A daughter, rocked by her true identity.

A detective, risking his life to protect them both.

All three of them . . . betrayed.

I love giving deserving characters their happily ever afters and the bad guys their comeuppance. To celebrate my release week, I'm giving away a digital copy or paperback of Betrayed.  (paperback U.S. residents only, please) for those who answer two questions:

Betrayed takes place in Denver, Colorado.  Have you ever been to Colorado, and, if so, did you take away any fond memories?

  3. Donnell, congratulations on your newest release. It sounds awesome and the cover is amazing. I LOVED your first book (The Past Came Hunting) and am in the middle of your second book and loving it as well - actually, maybe even more than the first one. You just get better and better. Am so excited to add your third book to my Kindle library. Hopping over to get it right now! Happy book birthday!

  5. Alright, sounds like a book to add to my winter reading list. And of course! Colorado is one of my favorite places to visit! We just spent some time there this summer, making memories with the kids. In fact, I wrote about it on my own blog. (this is not a plug to get you to my blog; just a point I'm making that it was so wonderful and strange, I re-lived all the memories by writing about it). Glenwood Canyon and Redstone are two lovely places. Love that your book is set in Denver!

  6. Hi Donnell,
The premise of your book is so compelling I want to NOT write today and go pick it up. Like Lena I loved your first two books so I'm not the least bit worried that this one will be stellar. Sadly, I've never been to Colorado except for the Denver airport. What surprised me was that the airport is in a non-mountainous region--it was so flat looking out the windows! I knew I have to come back some time and find the Rockies!! Congrats on the new release--I wish you mega success with it!

    1. LOL, Liz, even though I haven't an ounce of aeronautical knowledge within me, I am speculating that it might be a very bad idea to put DIA in a mountain region. Just saying :) Write, my dear, that's your job, and thank you so much for the feedback on The Past Came Hunting and Deadly Recall. Happy Tuesday!

  10. Hi Donnell. I loved your other two books, so can't wait to read this one. I love Denver. It's a great city. I used to go there regularly for work (back when I was in sales - a long time ago). I'm looking forward to reading it to see if I recognize anything.

  11. Hi, Sandy, thank you! You're entered to win so don't go buying yet ;) Denver has grown and grown and I bring a lot of the changes into Betrayed. I'll be curious if anyone notices or comments -- specifically our legalization of pot :) Thanks for stopping by.

He cheated - and butt dialed me so that's how I found out. He went ot Colo to divorce me becuase it is not a community property state and more :)
    Wishing you mnay many sales!

    1. Cynthia, you have just educated me. I always thought Colorado was a community property state -- now I read it's a marital property state... hmmm. Low blow (literally on the butt dial) Hope you're recovering from his betrayal. I made sure my heroine did. It was therapeutic! Thank you for the well wishes. You're entered in the drawing.

  14. Hi, Donnell - I've flown into and out of Denver but never had the time to explore. But I did write a screenplay set in Leadville, and feel like I've lived there amid the miners and saloon girls during the silver rush. And I'm sort of in Colorado every day since John Denver is my favorite singer... Maybe I don't really qualify but this should give you a laugh.

    1. JJ. You're so Colorado you should have a bumper on your call that says "Native." How cool that you wrote a Leadville based screenplay. Hope you made it cold and your characters were often short of breath. Altitude, you know. And ... sobbb. I love John Denver. What a magnificent voice and artist taken too soon from us. Thank you for stopping by -- you're entered in the drawing!

  15. I've been to Colorado, Donnell. Several times to ski with family back when we were all considerably younger. LOL I've been to Denver on my way to Margie Lawson's Immersion class. It had been a long time between trips, and I didn't remember how flat Denver is. I just recall the lovely mountains covered in snow and the gorgeous trees and "mini-hiking" the moutain at Margie's. I've loved your first too books and will certainly buy this 3rd. If I don't win it here.. :) Great blurb, btw.

  16. Thank you so much, Marsha! And don't forget we met in Colorado. Margie rocks. I love to see her in person as I'm an auditory learner, but she refuses to move in with me. :) I'm so glad you enjoyed The Past Came Hunting and Deadly Recall, and you're entered here to win Betrayed! Thanks for stopping by!
