FIRST FRIDAY with the Crew

It's FIRST FRIDAY already.

May is here and the bluebonnets popped in Texas like crazy.

But we're not here to talk about April showers or May flowers. This month I asked Crew members, "What’s your favorite movie and do you have a favorite line from it?"

Anyone who's asked me in the past knows that my favorite movie depends on the day of the week and what mood I'm in. But honestly, there's one movie that I've watched so many times, I really do know all the lines. I watch it when I'm down, when I want to have fun, when I want to introduce a friend to it. I never say no to watching it...sometimes, I run the scenes in my head for a laugh.

UNDERCOVER BLUES

One of my favorite movies is THE PRINCESS BRIDE.  It's got everything--True Love, pirates, poisoning, sword fights, revenge--what's not to like?  There are so many quotable moments in this movie, but ... Lara's favorite quote:

VIZZINI: HE DIDN'T FALL? INCONCEIVABLE.

INIGO MONTOYA: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

And bonus points because as a professor, I get to actually say this to my students at times!

THE PRINCESS BRIDE

I've got a lot of traveling planned during the summer, and release-wise, my second book, FATAL FALLOUT, comes out in August.  I'm practically counting the days!  It's already up for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, if you're interested.

As for my current project... Well, I'm getting married this month!  A week from today, in fact.  Wedding plans have been keeping my busy, but I have managed to write a bit here and there.  I'm hoping after the wedding I can go back to working on my latest project (tentatively titled KILLER EXPOSURE).  Wish me luck!

Oh, gosh, so many movies, so little time.  But one movie, I will always drop every thing for and watch is OVERBOARD with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.  DONNELL'S favorite line:  is when Goldie Hawn aka wealthy Joanna Stanton who has amnesia is tricked into believing she's Kurt Russell's wife Annie Procter.  As she sits on the porch and contemplates her life.

ANNIE: "I didn't marry well, did I?"  

OVERBOARD

That line always, always cracks me up.  A really good feel good movie and romance.

Currently, I'm doing edits for a single title novel called BURIED AGENDAS and writing a series, working title for book one, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO RAE DAWN WALKER?

Hello! I'm, Kathleen Baldwin, and I'm a new member of Get Lost in a Story. I write humorous Regency Romance. My latest release is MISTAKEN KISS - an Amazon bestseller. But let's talk movies... Jillian: Whenever I am asked whether I would like to see The Gentlemen of Scotland Yard made into a movie, I always say that I would rather have the books made into a series on HBO, Showtime, or Starz. The episodic series format tells a richer, more complex story, with plenty of time for interesting twists and turns. Not to mention the opportunity to tell a mature love story. So, truthfully, I no longer have movie favorites. I have series favorites: Game of Thrones, The Blacklist, The Americans, Justified. And I am so looking forward to Outlander. I'm a huge fan of the Diana Gabaldon books, and have a feeling the series is going to be great!

Currently, I am writing the first novel in the spin off series to The Gentlemen of Scotland Yard. The new book, CODENAME: DRAGON, follows Detective Flynn Rhys, an operative who has gone rogue––or has he? Here's a brief excerpt:

She straightened in a huff. “The least you might do is deprive me of my virginity.” As brazen as she was, she could not quite hold his gaze. “Ruin me––deflower the rose––whatever you call it.”

He tilted his head, admiring her. “Lovely Alice, still desperate to get the engagement called off. Am I to be your unwitting lover? What would you have me do, take your maidenhead and declare my love to your uncle?” 

Eyebrows clashed as she drew her lips together. “Would that be so terrible? We could be together at last.” 

Flynn snorted. “The second your uncle cancelled your charge privileges at Harrods, you’d leave me flat.” He fastened his gaze on her pout. “As for your betrothed, Lord Chilton, if I did as you request the self-aggrandizing fool would call me out. Pistols at dawn. And suppose he gets the better of me, what then?”

“But he won’t. You’re a crack shot. Everyone knows it.” Her beguiling grin had returned. “You could wound Clive and we’d be done with it.” 

“Entirely too romantic. I’m afraid I’d have to kill him. And then where would I be? Locked up in Her Majesty’s Prison Wormwood Scrubs. I believe visitation is on Saturdays.” His gaze roamed over her. “With enough cash we could arrange for conjugal visits.”

Alice appeared deflated, then her eyes narrowed. “Remember, I’m a budding adventuress and rather excellent at investigations and jail breaks.”

“On the run together, yet another romantic notion.” He lay back, amused. “Ask me again in a year or two, if you manage to sink the marriage.”

Hi, hi! Alexa here to share one of my favorite movies with you, too! I’m probably dating myself here, but I love the original Highlander movie from 1986. The first time I saw it was many years after ’86, though. I was with a bunch of friends who claimed it was outstanding. Honestly, I didn’t think much of it, but then I watched it a second time and started to really “get it”. 


I’ve seen it many times since then. I love it because of the historical beautiful Scottish Highland scenery and the suspense of the modern-day NYC setting. And of course I love the Scottish accents! I know this movie is the reason I started writing books set in Scotland. In fact, the setting of my books, Glenhalish, is my fictional version of the movie hero’s home village, Glenfinnan.

HIGHLANDER

I can’t write any one specific line I love for 2 reasons: I haven’t watched it in a few years and I’m too busy! At the moment, I’m working on a new romantic suspense novella, I’ve got 2 more novellas to write by August and of course I have the real world job. Movies and movie quoting is like an Olympic sport in my family. Do not take my brothers or children on in a favorite lines contest! I'm not a gold medalist in the competitions, but I have my dozen or so movies that I can quote at will:  The Hunt For Red October: "Captain, I think they just shot a torpedo at us!"  A Hard Day's Night, "Pardon me for asking, but who's that little old man?" Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: "Morons, I've got morons on my team." Monty Python and the Holy Grail: "Go away or I shall taunt you a second time."  Love Actually: "Say 'yes,' you skinny moron!"  

But my absolute favorite quote--one that guides every romance I ever write comes from Pretty Woman at the end of the movie when 
Richard Gere asks Julia Roberts: "What happens after he climbs up the tower and rescues her?" 
And she says, "She rescues him right back." 

Rescuing each other is at the heart of the best romantic stories! 

PRETTY WOMAN

My newest book will be coming out this fall (date to be announced) from Avon. It will be titled "Beauty and the Brit" and is the story of riding stable owner David  Pitts-Matherson (from my book "Rescued by a Stranger). David's heroine is feisty, tattooed, inner city red-head Rio Montoya, who arrives at David's farm with a lot of dreams but a lot of big city problems that may keep her from realizing them. Here's a short excerpt:

Rio quit listening when a third figure emerged from the barn. For an instant she watched casually, but then his movements, his wave of thick, dark hair, and a smile flashing across the distance shocked her into recognition.

David.

She took him all in, and her heart fell in helpless disillusionment. In tight-fitting breeches, a pale green-and-white striped polo shirt, and tall black boots hugging his lower legs all the way to his knees, he looked as un-western, as un-macho as the two stylish girls who’d just passed by.  If she could have created a picture that screamed “I am the opposite of a cowboy,” this would have been it. For once, even Bonnie was quiet.

And yet, as the length of his confident stride carried him closer, the contours of his thighs and breadth of his shoulders erased anything she’d mistaken for effeminate about him. Her disenchantment began to fade.

“Rio. Bonnie.” He called out. “I’m glad to see you’ve made it safely. How was the ride down? Construction traffic?”

Jill shook her head. “Easy peasy.”

“Brilliant.” His accent and warm smile gave the word an onomatopoeic brightness.

He faced Rio directly, and all her memories of him turned to pale shadows. The living man with his sculpted cheeks and rich, glinting brown eyes turned her heart and pulse into a marimba band, drowning out her heavy regret with the music of gut-deep attraction. Tight riding pants were suddenly her new favorite male clothing. He was flat-out gorgeous. How could she have forgotten?
