Meet Sharon!

Sharon Ashwood is a novelist, desk jockey and enthusiast for the weird and spooky. She has an English literature degree but works as a finance geek. Interests include growing her to-be-read pile and playing with the toy graveyard on her desk. As a vegetarian, she freely admits the whole vampire/werewolf lifestyle would never work out, so she writes her adventures instead.

Sharon is the winner of the RITA® Award for Paranormal Romance. She lives in the Pacific Northwest and is owned by the Demon Lord of Kitty Badness.

Lara: How often to you get lost in a story?

Sharon: I get frustrated because I don’t have as much time to read as I’d like—and this is a common complaint with authors, because there is never enough time! To me, an hour of uninterrupted reading time is an unheard-of luxury. I found a solution with audio books, because I can listen while I’m walking to work, doing housework, or anything else that doesn’t require that part of my brain. It’s an exciting area of publishing that has really taken off and showcases the skills of a lot of fabulous voice artists. As a result, I can keep up with reading and get through a book or more a week.

Lara: Is writing or story-telling easier for you?

Sharon: Writing. I ramble if I try to tell a story verbally.

Lara: What’s the first thing you do when you finish writing a book?

Sharon: Do my best to put my life back in order. A lot of practical life stuff slides toward the deadline hour. So, it’s clean, pay bills, remind friends I’m still alive, and do laundry.

Lara: If you couldn’t be a writer anymore, what profession would you take up?

Sharon: I have a full-time job as a resource manager, which is basically geeking out over spreadsheets all day. It’s a good balance to a writing career, because artistic lives are brutal financially and emotionally. Although I still ride the highs and lows in both of my jobs, each helps me keep the other in perspective.

Lara: What’s your favorite fairy tale?

Sharon: The Tinder Box. It’s not as well-known as some, but it’s all about being true to your ideals and generous of spirit.

Lara: How is it working with hot guys and sexy women all day?

Sharon: I’m not going to answer that because no matter what I say my co-workers will make my life a living hell.

Lara: What inspires you daily?

Sharon: In terms of writing, I always have stories pressing at me to be told. I’m a story-telling junkie.

Lara: Which of your characters would you most/least like to invite to dinner, and why?

Sharon: That one is easy. My werewolf character, Faran Kenyon, because he’s a fabulous chef and he’ll do the cooking. He’s the joker of the bunch and is in all the books in the Four Horsemen series. His story, Possessed by a Wolf, is the third tale.

Lara: What one thing about your hero drives his heroine crazy? And what one thing about your heroine drives her hero nuts?

Sharon: I’ll pick one from each book.  In Possessed by a Warrior, Sam is very reserved and formal at first. Chloe spends a lot of time trying to crack his façade to find out what he’s really like. Of course he is doing his best to keep a lid on his feelings because he’s got enormous secrets (being a vampire is just the start) and confiding in her will unleash a whole bunch of problems.

In Possessed by an Immortal, Mark is a vampire, a superspy, an ex-assassin—basically one tough customer. And one of the very first things Bree does is pull his own gun on him. It’s just embarrassing. I think that’s why he eventually falls for her. She has the power to catch him off guard, and that’s saying something after all he’s been through.

Lara’s GOTTA ASK: What is your biggest vice?

Sharon’s GOTTA ANSWER:   Probably coffee. I drink way too much of it. Nothing fancy, just plain black java, preferably on a drip feed straight into the vein.
