Wylie Snow

ABOUT WYLIE SNOW

Almost every author says they wanted to write from a very early age. Not Wylie. She wanted to be a detective like Nancy Drew, or a wildlife expert like Jim Fowler, or an archaeologist like Indiana Jones.
Or own an island resort and make fantasies come true.
Funny how life works…
She married a detective, worked in a zoo, explored shipwrecks, and spent 18 glorious years living on a sunny sub-tropical island.
As for those fantasies…
She also writes erotic-romance as Wylie Kinson.

ABOUT JUMP ZONE: CLEO FALLS

When deception, danger and death are one leap away… you can’t afford to fall.

All Cleo wants, all she’s ever wanted, is the acceptance of her tribe and the love of her family... and she almost dies trying to earn it. But the man who saved her, who found beauty in her flaws and loved her without condition, has cruelly betrayed her, and she’s dying all over again.

His words, his promises, his kisses... Were they all lies? Lost in unfamiliar territory, Cleo will fight the forces that conspire to destroy her homeland, even if she has to do it alone.

Libra longs for freedom—from prison, from pretense, and from his birthright... but he’s caught in a political game where only greed and power can win, and Cleo Rush is the pawn. How much is he willing to sacrifice for liberty? His morals, his principles, the woman he loves?  No matter which path he chooses, people will die, their blood on his hands. And it could be hers.

To save themselves and their world, Cleo and Libra must overcome the double tragedy that binds their families in hatred. Together, they might live. Apart, Cleo will fall.

GET TO KNOW WYLIE

MAUREEN: What’s your favorite holiday?
WYLIE: Does Halloween count?  I love the imagination of it! And the candy J

MAUREEN: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
WYLIE: I’m a huge movie buff, so narrowing down to just one,… tough. I’m going to go with Legends of the Fall. Great cast, amazing soundtrack, and it runs you through every emotion.

MAUREEN: Where do you most like to read and how often?
WYLIE: In the bathtub. It’s the only place my family won’t disturb me.

MAUREEN: What’s the first book you remember reading?
WYLIE: My first adult book (because going back further than age 13 would be impossible!) was Sidney Sheldon’s Rage of Angels. I was in 8th Grade. My teacher asked to borrow it when I was done.

MAUREEN: Do you believe in ghosts?
WYLIE: I don’t not believe in ghosts. I don’t think I’ve met one yet, but I’m not ruling anything out.

MAUREEN: Do shapeshifters exist?
WYLIE: Yes. They are called children. They go from little horned devils to darling angels every day!

MAUREEN: Hiking boots or high heels?
WYLIE: They both hurt. I’m going with bedroom slippers.

MAUREEN: Would you rather sky dive or scuba dive?
WYLIE: Scuba dive! When I lived in Bermuda I spent a lot of time diving shipwrecks, wondering what and who they were carrying, knowing that every person on board had a story.

MAUREEN: Vanilla or chocolate?
WYLIE: Chocolate.

MAUREEN: What’s the most romantic thing anyone ever did for you?
WYLIE: When my husband and I were dating, he got takeout from a very exclusive restaurant (not the kind you take-out from!) and set up a romantic outdoor dinner in a private garden that overlooked Hamilton Harbour (Bermuda), which was full of tall ships and twinkling lights. I said yes ;)

MAUREEN: Which of your characters would you most/least to invite to dinner, and why?
WYLIE: I LOVE this question!! I would love to have dinner with Libra, the hero of my book, so I could pick his brain about the future. I’d least like to have Leon Trevayne, because he’d probably spray spittle all over the food during one of his rants.

MAUREEN: Tea or Coffee? And how do you take it?
WYLIE: Coffee – light and sweet. As for tea, I enjoy herbals. I’m on a lemon-ginger kick at the moment.

MAUREEN: What does it mean to love someone?
WYLIE: My measure of love… If I would throw myself into the path of an oncoming bus for someone. Is that really weird? LOL

MAUREEN: What color would you make the sky if it wasn’t going to be blue anymore and why?
WYLIE: I’d make the sky candle-light. Everyone looks better in candle light ;)

MAUREEN: What’s your idea of a perfect Sunday afternoon?

WYLIE: If it’s cold or raining… good book, fireplace, latte. If it’s sunny… beach, good book, mojito.

MAUREEN’S GOTTA ASK--WYLIE’S GOTTA ANSWER

MAUREEN: How did you come up with the idea for your book’s post-apocalyptic future?

WYLIE: I had an idea for a post-apocalyptic Romeo and Juliet type of story but the world didn’t begin building in my head until a car-trip through Northern Ontario. The untamed beauty of the landscape literally took my breath away. Miles and miles of uninhabited land, a stunning palette of greens and dark blues, harsh rocky outcrops and lake after lake. Sixteen hours later, polite conversation exhausted, my husband and I began the ‘what would you do if’ game. It didn’t matter what the disaster -- zombie apocalypse, alien invasion, massive tsunami, Ebola outbreak -- we decided we’d survive up here, in the northern forests Ontario. And Jump Zone was born!

On Dec 21, 2012, at 2:12 pm, the sky went dark all over the world...

...and people's lives changed in ways they feared to admit. Thousands died in accidents while others claimed to have seen demons and found themselves locked up in their local psychiatric ward. Scientists explained away the phenomenon, and things seemed to return to normal.

After a decade of trying to conceal a power she never expected or wanted, Brie Duval was used to being alone. When life—or more appropriately, a meddling friend, sends her on a blind date with Ian Connors, she discovers she wasn't the only person to gain powers that day.

They find themselves falling in love while on the run from a creature with eyes that suck in light and a force that controls their wills, but Brie fears their love is a side effect of the menace. In order to survive, they must put aside their fears and embrace the gifts they've fought so hard to deny.

An Interview with Brie Duval and Ian Connor from Dark Daze
(Taken down by Ava Delany)

Thank you for joining us via the time talker. This futuristic invention is fascinating. Can you tell me some of the other changes we can expect between December 2012 and December 2022?

Brie: Small changes—like the elimination of folding money in favor of credit and all cars becoming keyless—didn't surprise me, but when the hotels became voice controlled, that took a bit of getting used to.
Ian: I was just relieved when the bathrooms weren't on the new system.
I can imagine. What brought about all these wonderful inventions in such a short time?
Brie: After Dark Day, most people didn't want to talk about the changes, but there were changes. Some people got smarter, some gained physical and mental powers. Even some animals seemed affected.

What is Dark Day?
Brie: The Mayans predicted a big change on December 21, 2012.
Ian: Yeah, if only they'd known how big.
Brie: The world went dark in the afternoon—this inky dark that seemed to suck in all the light. Tens of thousands of people died in accidents. So many people lost family members, like I did . . . I'm sorry but I can't . . .
Ian: It's all right, Brie. Can we move on? Brie's getting upset.

That's okay. We'll move on to something more fun. What's your favorite meal?
Ian: I'm partial to Bangers and Colcannon. It's a family tradition.
Brie: His Bangers and Colcannon are my new favorite. Probably because it was the first meal we ever made together.
Do you have a favorite cocktail?
Ian: Anything but beer! I'll be happy if I never see another beer again.
You're obviously not a beer lover. What about coffee? Or do you prefer tea?
Ian: I'm okay with either, but it's all Mocha Lattes for Brie.
Brie: Low fat Mocha Lattes.
Ian: Don't look at me like I forgot your birthday. You don't need low fat lattes. You're beautiful just as you are.

That's sweet. You obviously love each other. Was it love at first sight?
Brie: I think it was, though I thought I couldn't have him because of my secrets.
Ian: I thought the same thing, with so many strange things were happening around me. We were lucky because it turned out we both had secrets and they united us, rather than breaking us apart.

Ooh, secrets! What secrets?
Ian: Secrets are secrets for a reason. I'll say this. Since Dark Day, secrets are paramount. If you go telling everyone everything, you might find yourself in a mental hospital the way so many people did when they claimed animals talked to them or they could read people's thoughts.
Brie: So many people smile and act friendly, but then you look in their eyes and they look terrified.

Aren't these secrets in your book?
Ian: Yes, but that's why we used the time talker to contact a writer earlier in the time stream than we are. We wanted the chance to warn those people who are about to experience Dark Day so that they might be better prepared for what will happen. If we can prepare people for what is to come, it might change the way things are, and we might be able to embrace our secrets, rather than hide them.

Sounds like a heck of a story. Who took it down?
Ian: I tapped into the computer of a writer named Ava Delany. She listened for hours, and took notes.
Where can readers find more information on her?
She has twitter and facebook accounts, as well as goodreads, but you could check her website for information on our story and several others. www.avadelany.webs.com

ABOUT THE BOOK

Generations ago,  a genetic experiment gone wrong—the Reduction—decimated humanity, giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology.

Balzer + Bray
ISBN: 978-0062006141
Eighteen-year-old Luddite Elliot North has always known her place in this caste system. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family’s estate over love. But now the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists is jumpstarting the wheel of progress and threatening Luddite control; Elliot’s estate is floundering; and she’s forced to rent land to the mysterious Cloud Fleet, a group of shipbuilders that includes renowned explorer Captain Malakai Wentforth—an almost unrecognizable Kai. And while Elliott wonders if this could be their second chance, Kai seems determined to show Elliot exactly what she gave up when she abandoned him.

But Elliot soon discovers her childhood friend carries a secret—one that could change the society in which they live…or bring it to its knees. And again, she’s faced with a choice: cling to what she’s been raised to believe, or cast her lot with the only boy she’s ever loved, even if she has lost him forever.

Inspired by Jane Austen’s PERSUASION, FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS is a breathtaking romance about opening your mind to the future and your heart to the one person you know can break it.

GET TO KNOW DIANA PETERFREUND

MAUREEN: What’s your favorite holiday?
DIANA:  Halloween. I love playing dress-up, though most people don’t know that about me. After eight books. I’ve finally been able to incorporate costuming into my newest WIP, but aside from being frockalicious, that project is otherwise a big fat secret yet.

MAUREEN: What’s next for you as an author?
DIANA:  After FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS, I have two short stories out in anthologies this fall. “Burn Bright” will appear in the anthology FORETOLD, edited by Carrie Ryan (Random House). “Stray Magic” will open the anthology UNDER MY HAT: TALES FROM THE CAULDRON, edited by Jonathan Strahan (Random House).

MAUREEN: Do shapeshifters exist?
DIANA:  Um, have you seen the mimic octopus? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8oQBYw6xxc) That stuff is crazy and completely real.

MAUREEN: I've seen that video. It's crazy the things that nature does! What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on?
DIANA:  I don’t know if this is really a “vacation,” but in 2003, my boyfriend (now my husband) and I quit our jobs and went to Australia and New Zealand, armed only with some backpacks, a tent, and our hitchhiking thumbs. The things I saw in New Zealand inspired me to set FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS on those beautiful, remote islands.

MAUREEN: Cats or dogs?
DIANA:  Dogs. I’m a huge dog lover and used to foster rescue dogs, which inspired the story “Stray Magic”.

MAUREEN: Hiking boots or high heels?
DIANA:  Hiking boots! I actually own magical hiking boots. I inherited them from my great aunt, who got them from a hermit in the Alaska bush. True story.

MAUREEN: I need some magic boots! What’s your favorite cartoon character?
DIANA:  Toph (Awesomely snarky blind earthbender from Avatar: The Last Airbender). I love Toph so much we used to call my daughter that before she was born (she liked to stomp around inside me).

MAUREEN: What hidden talents do you have?
DIANA:  My elbows are double-jointed. According to my husband, it’s not a talent you actually want to witness.

MAUREEN: What sound or noise do you love?
DIANA:  These days, it’s the sound of my toddler singing. She’s pretty good for 20 months.

MAUREEN: What’s the most romantic thing anyone ever did for you?
DIANA:  My husband’s first big present to me was registration at my first ever RWA conference. He believes in me so hard.

MAUREEN: That is romantic! What’s the first thing you do when you finish writing a book? DIANA:  Drink – usually something sparkly. And sleep. I love sleep, and I never get to do enough of it on deadline.

MAUREEN: What was your favorite subject in school and why?
DIANA:  In college my two favorite classes were called “Wilderness and the North American Imagination” and “Women and The Rise of the Novel” – which pretty much says everything you ever need to know about me.

MAUREEN: Who was your first best friend? Are you still in touch?
DIANA:  My best friend Elizabeth and I met when we were six. After being long distance BFFs for most of our lives, we lived a few blocks from each other in DC for the last six years, but she recently moved to Colorado, which – don’t get me started. I may cry.

MAUREEN: Aw, sorry. :( What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing?
DIANA:  All of my dreams. I have a book on shelves that people read. I’ve got a circle of beloved friends who are writers just like me. I’ve met some of my favorite writers and talked to readers who have laughed and cried and loved my books. I have been paid to make up stories. I go to work in my pajamas. The fun thing about dreams though, is we always get to make more.

MAUREEN: So true! Tea or Coffee? And how do you take it?
DIANA:  Tea: medium strength and otherwise plain.

GOTTA ASK -- GOTTA ANSWER

MAUREEN: What was your favorite book when you were twelve? Why?
DIANA:  My favorite books have changed remarkably little since I was twelve, to tell the truth. I still absolutely adore the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis (especially The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) and the “Anne” series by L.M. Montgomery (particularly Anne of the Island).
