Through My Lens: Christmas on the Road
I've spent many Christmases NOT at home. That's what happens when you have lots of family. You shift houses from year to year, you trade your family for in-laws. But I've never spent it camping...at least not until this year. And when I say "camping" I'll happily concede that we didn't rough it in the 26' camper. (LOL)
We spent a lot of hours driving straight to the campsite. It was everyone's first time to visit Roswell and were very sad that everything closed before 6 pm. Cosmic Campgrounds was awesome. "It is one of only 10 certified IDA Sanctuaries in the world. International Dark Sky Sanctuaries are lands possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights." I can tell you it was worth the drive. No lights for 40 miles and only 6 campsites. There were so many stars !!! Definitely worth it--especially with Tim's telescope.
Our next stop was the Catwalk on the west side of the Gila National Forest near Glenwood, New Mexico. This short hike is extremely easy since it's paved almost 100%. A lot of history here and accessible. It was cool, but no wind kept it bearable.
We spent Christmas at the Mesa Campgrounds in the national forest. Lovely, quiet...and then it snowed. Just beautiful. It was truly the first WHITE Christmas for Tim and my daughter. It might have snowed on Christmas in Dallas before, but nothing like this.
We dropped the trailer at the campgrounds and spent the day after Christmas visiting White Sands Monument (NOW a national park as of 12/29/19). O.M.G. !!!
White Sands is amazing. I've been wanting to go here for years (okay, a couple of decades). My mom and dad visited in the 90s and his description and impression piqued my interest waaaay back then. I'm so glad Tim and I had the chance to visit. VERY impressive.
I hope your Christmas was Merry and Bright!!
AND I hope you have plenty of books to ring in the new year !
Tell me what you're doing for New Year's Eve to be eligible to choose a book from my crate!

THE ROMANCE INTERVIEW
ANGI: What would your book couple do for Valentine’s Day?
SUSAN: Ross would invite Sally out to dinner. They would ride the horses out into the pasture of his ranch. There Ross would build a small fire and cook Sally a meal. Afterwards they would snuggle under a blanket, talk and look at the stars.
ANGI: What’s your favorite Romantic Movie?
SUSAN: I love the movie Chasing Liberty with Mandy Moore and Matthew Goode. I’ve watched it over and over. The daughter of the President finds love during an adventure in Europe. It’s a great story.
ANGI: Which of your heroes is your favorite book boyfriend?
SUSAN: Haha. The correct answer is all of them. I can’t make them jealous! Truthfully I have loved them all.
ANGI: Have you done anything romantic lately?
SUSAN: Not really. My husband and I aren’t very romantic people. We been married for 37 years so we must be doing something right. My husband has been known to surprise me with fresh flowers. I do love fresh flowers.
SUSAN: Chocolate kisses. The individual original ones. If they are any larger it takes away for the true essences of the chocolate. Sad that I know and think this.
ANGI: What is your favorite Valentine’s Day gift?—given or received
SUSAN: I’m not a big fan of holiday cards but I do like one on Valentine’s Day. One with the most thought put into it is my favorite. I have a number of them saved in my bedside table. I also like a pound bag of chocolate kisses. No, I don’t share them.
WHICH FICTIONAL CHARACTER WOULD YOU ASK TO BE YOUR VALENTINE?
SUSAN’S ANSWER: James Bond. I’m a big fan. I know, I know he is a womanizer but for me he would change his ways!

Blast to the Past: Robyn A Christmas Bride
Time for another BLAST TO THE PAST and an oldie-but-goodie, previously-released (just last Christmas) book and excerpt. Here’s Robyn: A Christmas Bride, my second book set in Noelle, Colorado. She's a free-spirited wagon driver. He's a workaholic Denver freight man—who needs the gift of true love.
Who’s the perfect match for a flame-haired Welsh tomboy who loves driving wagons?
Raised by three free-spirited older brothers, Robyn Llewellyn has learned to fight for what she wants—and now she wants to transform her boss and best friend, Max Peregrine, into a lifelong partner. Determined to become the image of what a marriage-minded man wants, Robyn trades her trousers for a dress and heads to Max’s hometown of Noelle, Colorado. But changing who she is with the help of the now happily-married Brides of Noelle puts her friendship with Max at risk.
Who’s the perfect match for a work-addicted Denver business owner who loves his independence?
Defying his brother and grandpa’s wishes for him to stay with them in Noelle, Max Peregrine has created his dream job—leading a highly successful branch of Peregrines’ Post and Freight while working beside Robyn, the only person who makes him smile every day. But when she leaves without a word, Max follows her to Noelle where the choices they both must face could make it impossible for them to stay together beyond Christmas day.

Writing a historical romance Christmas story with the themes of a my-fair-lady transformation, selfless acts of love, and friends becoming soulmates is...a juggling act. It's so easy to drop at least one ball. How did I do?
“Jacqui has hit a home run with this one” - Peggy C, Amazon review.
Thank you, Peggy! Your words are the best reward an author can receive ❤️
But now, back to my heroine's my-fair-lady transformation. Say hello to my feisty wagon driver...

Excerpt ~ Robyn: A Christmas Bride
Noelle, Colorado—December 21, 1877
Max stood, astounded. Not by how much Noelle had changed, but by how little he had. Hovering inside Nacho’s front door with so many unenthused faces staring at him, he still felt like an outsider, a fraud, a square post in a round hole. Every success he’d earned since leaving Noelle seemed insignificant or even worse, like none of it had happened.
He considered turning tail and heading back to Denver. As fast as he could. Then Grandpa Gus shouted his name, and he saw him, Jack, Birdie and—
He shook his head in disbelief.
Was that Robyn? Wearing a dress? Surrounded by a roomful of men? Men who dismissed him and pinned their gazes on her. With too much enthusiasm.
He made a beeline for her. His brother leapt from his seat and intercepted him. Max held out his hand for a welcoming handshake, but Jack yanked him in for a fierce hug.
“You’re back.” Jack squeezed him even tighter.
“And you’re cracking my ribs.”
The instant Jack released him, Gus hugged him just as intensely. Birdie did as well. When he was finally free, he still struggled to breathe. Their exuberant greeting overwhelmed him.
He coughed and said, “It’s good to be here with you.” He meant it even more when he saw Robyn smiling at him.
“And what brings you here, Red Beard?” The familiar spark in her eyes when she said her special name for him, made it even harder to draw in air. Unexpectedly, her eyes darkened and her voice wavered as she said, “I hope…everything is well in Denver.”
“Your brothers are good.” As good as he could imagine them ever being. “I’m here for you.” He forgot to breathe entirely when her eyes shone brighter than he’d ever seen. “You’re needed in Denver, Red Bird.”

WHAT HAVE YOU DISCOVERED THIS YEAR THAT YOU TRULY APPRECIATE?
AMANDA MCINTYRE
As another year comes to a close, I got to thinking about the many changes that have happened not only in my life, but in the world. That can get to be overwhelming were it not for my faith. No worse or better than anyone else, I find as I get older that I yearn to understand better the spirit that has guided me through the ups and downs of my life.
I also appreciate more the many blessings God has given. Family, friends, the utter delight and wonder of my grandchildren's eyes when they discover something new. And too, the precious gift of time...time to recognize and enjoy the blessings in the every day. Each day gives yet new reasons to be grateful, and I pray--whatever faith you may believe-- that you will awaken each day with at least one thing to be grateful for!
Blessings to each of you in the coming year! May peace and kindness matter to us all in the days ahead!
