Dating can be deadly. . .
Sunny Vale considers herself a dog-loving, romance-reading,
homebody. But her life goes from dull to deadly when her book club fires her
from her own love life and sets her up on six blind dates- one of whom might be
with a murderer. More trouble arrives in the dead of night, in the form of Jake
Landon, a mysterious stranger, who breaks into her neighbor’s house and
possibly her heart. But Jake is packing more than a loaded gun in his
well-fitting Levi’s. He brings an arsenal of secrets and plenty of heat to
Sunny’s ho-hum summer.
Jake
Landon finds himself caught up in the capers of the sexy blonde in the house
next door. But he has his own agenda which doesn’t involve playing hero to a
curvy second-grade teacher and babysitting her panty-puking puppy. He's got other
problems like fiery explosions, a missing person...and a parade of jerks Sunny
insists on dating.
Could Sunny’s Mr. Right be right
under her nose? Even though Jake is gorgeous, likes her dog, and has abs she
can crack an egg on, can she really go out with him if he’s just murdered her
next door neighbor?
DONNELL: Hi Jennie,
welcome to Get Lost in a Story. Your
protagonist is my kind of gal. She’s a
homebody, dog-loving and romance-reading.
So… how much is Sunny like Jennie?
JENNIE: Ha! I would think we all
throw a little of ourselves into our heroines. Hopefully, the best parts. Sunny
and I share a few attributes, we are both curvy blondes that love to read and
fantasize about hot nights with pirates and hunky bad boys with tender hearts.
We both value friendship and make hanging out with our friends a priority. I am
not much of homebody (unless I am writing), I prefer to be out doing things and
being with people. Both Sunny and I often speak without thinking first and we
both love to laugh. There are a few stories based on facts in the book, I’m not
revealing which ones, but I really did fling a tray of nachos onto the backs of
three men during an exciting goal at a hockey game and my golden retriever has
eaten and upchucked more odd things than I have time to write about. Oh, and we
both have a thing for Owen Wilson. ;)
DONNELL: Speaking of
home, do you have a favorite room in your house?
JENNIE: I have a living
room/dining room combination and my family spends most of our time eating and
hanging out together in that area. From MY spot on the sofa, I have listened
and laughed and cried and cuddled and held and shared more moments with family
and friends in that one area than any other.
DONNELL: If you’re
not writing, where might we find you?
JENNIE: In the summer, by the
pool or playing volleyball or spending time outside with family and dogs.
Usually eating Cheetos. In the winter, I love to go to the movies or curl up in
that corner of the sofa with a good book and a cup of cocoa or a good movie and
my husband. (Cheetos are still most likely involved.) Oh, and I guess I have
that job at the bank I go to, as well. ;)
DONNELL: What’s in
your refrigerator right now?
JENNIE: Staples of milk, Caramel
Brulee coffee creamer, Diet Coke, lunchmeat, a bazillion condiments crammed
into the door, a bag of ceasar salad, and way too many bags of shredded
cheese.
DONNELL: What comes
easier for your writing romance or writing comedy?
JENNIE: I think romance is
comedy. So much of falling in love and staying in love is about having a sense
of humor and being able to laugh at ourselves and our situations. I feel like
one of my best gifts is the ability to make people laugh, so the funny bits
find their way into all of my stories.
DONNELL: What authors
have influenced you, if any?
JENNIE: Janet Evanovich- my style is the most similar
to hers, a quick, fun, easy read with a lot of laughs, some great sex, a few
quirky secondary characters and a good story about an ordinary woman who has
goofy things happen to her. She is the one who encouraged me to join Romance
Writers of America (indirectly, through her advice for writers, but it felt
like she was talking just to me!). Nora Roberts is the Queen of Romance (enough
said). I LOVE Susan Elizabeth Phillips and the way she brings in secondary
characters and makes you laugh and cry. I love the way she writes the stories
of those secondary characters in new books, which is what I am doing as well,
in creating Maggie’s story in Book 2 of my Pleasant Valley Page Turners series.
Jennifer Crusie is another strong influence in her writing style of the fun,
romantic, light-hearted happy ending book.
DONNELL: What turns
you on? Then switch this. What turns you off?
JENNIE: I LOVE romance! So, the
obvious stuff of candlelight, quality time, slow dancing, and a great mix of
make-out music! I cry at the drop of a hat, so I love it when my hubby does
something thoughtful or says something sweet that touches my heart and makes me
cry or makes me laugh til I cry. I also love to get dressed up and have a night
out on the town. Turn offs would be: conceited people, crowds, bad breath,
stomach-aches, the usual stuff.
