“Thank you,” Jasmine told him.

“For what?”

“Saving me. That doesn’t happen a lot for me.”

He cranked the car. The engine immediately purred to life.

“Please.” The word seemed to be a bit hard for her to say. Interesting. “Don’t…don’t take me to a hospital. I’m staying in a motel just outside of town. Just drop me off there, and I’ll vanish from your life. I promise.”

He pulled into traffic. He was far too aware of her next to him.

“If you turn right at the next intersection, you’ll be able to get back to my motel.”

Drake stared at the road ahead of him.

“The turn is here,” Jasmine said, her voice breaking a bit. From pain? From fear? “You should go right—”

He didn’t go right.

“Drake?”

“You’ve got a lot of secrets.”

“Why didn’t you turn? I told you, I’d vanish. I won’t bother you again.”

She was already bothering him plenty. He should drop her off at the nearest hospital. Get on a plane and head down to New Orleans. Find another woman and forget about her. But he heard himself say, “You’re not vanishing.”

AN UNEXPECTED INTERVIEW

Here with us today are Drake Archer and Jasmine Bennett, the stars of MINE TO CRAVE. Drake and Jasmine, are, of course, thrilled to be here. They’re taking  a breather from the danger that is their lives and enjoying some quiet chat time. ;)

ANGI: What’s the first book you remember reading? 

Jasmine:  Sleeping Beauty—I wanted her to wake up—fast!

Drake: Huckleberry Finn.

ANGI: What’s your favorite “love” word?

Jasmine: Darling, of course. Isn’t that what you are, Drake? My special darling?

Drake: Am I supposed to have one of those?  I call Jasmine “beautiful” because that is exactly what she is to me—what she’ll always be.

ANGI: What’s your favorite fairy tale?

Drake:  Uh, what?  How about Little Red Riding Hood? Mostly because I’ve been called a big, bad wolf a few times or twenty.

ANGI: What’s your favorite cartoon character?

Jasmine:  Bugs Bunny.  Smart rabbit—he could get out of every dangerous situation. Kind of like…me.

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

Jasmine:  The Princess Bride. And, um, Drake, would it kill you to try saying, “As you wish…” to me a few times? I mean, really.

Drake: Casino. What can I say? Vegas is my life.

ANGI: What is your biggest vice?

Jasmine: Chocolate.

Drake: I own several casinos, so I prefer to enjoy other people’s vices.

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: What is your favorite thing about Drake and Jessica? Why does their chemistry only work for them?

CYNTHIA'S GOTTA ANSWER:  I love Drake and Jasmine because they are both characters with dark, troubled pasts. They have every reason in the world not to trust each other, but, somehow, they connect.  They feel safe together, and they create a fragile bond that can see them through the dangers that they face.

What or who inspired the hero for GUARDIAN RANGER?

CYNTHIA:  My hero in GUARDIAN RANGER is a fierce, protective alpha guy—he’s ex-military, and he’s used to facing danger.  For his inspiration, I’ll be honest—I went for one of my all-time favorite ex-military guys—Face from the A-Team.   Face is a good-looking guy, so good-looking that people often aren’t prepared for just how dangerous he can be.  That attractive surface can sure be deceptive.

What or who inspired the heroine for GUARDIAN RANGER?

CYNTHIA:   For my heroine, I wanted to create a character who was opposite (in many ways) from my hero. While his strength lies in the physical arena, my heroine is a computer genius—give her enough time, and she can usually figure out anything with her computers.  I like to pair up opposite characters so that their strengths (and weaknesses) can play off each other. 

Is there a hero you’re just dying to write about for Intrigue? 

CYNTHIA:   One of the secondary characters in this book, GUNNER ORTEZ, is a guy that I so wanted to write about—and then Intrigue gave me the chance to do just that! So I *was* dying to write about my sharpshooter, but now I’m all happy because his story is done. ;)

Where would your hero “pop the question” to your heroine (hopefully no story spoilers)?

CYNTHIA:   LOL, Jasper is an “in-the-moment” kind of guy. I think he’d propose as soon as he could, and the guy wouldn’t even notice/realize where they were.

What’s the perfect Valentine’s Day date for your characters from GUARDIAN RANGER?

CYNTHIA:   I think they would like a little peace and quiet (no gunfire or killers stalking them). An isolated cabin, roses…chocolate. Did I mention the no killers rule?

GOTTA ASK: If you had to choose a movie to describe GUARDIAN RANGER, which would it be?

CYNTHIA’S GOTTA ANSWER:  That is so tough!  It’s an action-adventure flick with the team working together (again, think A-Team), but it’s also a romance at its core—Bodyguard in the sense that the hero will put his life on the line in order to protect the heroine.

DEADLY LIES

DONNELL: Cynthia, it's an honor. Great covers and blurb. Let's start with a question most every author wants to know: Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?

CYNTHIA: I’ll confess…I read them. Sometimes they make me smile and perk me up, and sometimes they make wince. That’s just life. They don’t influence my writing, but they do strongly influence my need for chocolate.

DONNELL: Spoken like a true professional. Have you ever written a character who wasn’t meant to be a hero/heroine but he/she wouldn’t go away?

CYNTHIA: I’ve actually written three of these guys so far (well, I’m in the process of writing one, so 2 ½). I think I may have a bad guy weakness. The first character was Niol, a super powerful demon in Hotter After Midnight. Originally, I intended for him to be the villain of the piece, but he got to me. So I wrote a story for him—Midnight’s Master. So far, Niol is the character that has inspired the most fan mail. I think others may have a bad guy weakness, too.

DONNELL: What’s in your refrigerator right now?

CYNTHIA: Oh, let’s see…cold pizza (Yikes! From at least 5 days ago), cheddar cheese, five different types of milk (don’t ask) and some Mike’s Hard Lemonade. Um, tomorrow is grocery day.

DONNELL: Is Elvis really dead?

CYNTHIA: I hope not.

DONNELL: What do you do to unwind and relax?

CYNTHIA: I go to the beach and eat lots and lots of chocolate (you have to eat the chocolate fast on the beach because it melts or gets all sandy too soon).

DONNELL: I'm seeing a pattern here with chocolate. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

CYNTHIA: I think writer’s block can hit any writer. I keep an idea file on my computer to help me fight the block. When I’m writing stories and other ideas come to me, I type them in the file so that I can use them when I am stuck for story ideas.

Another technique…if I’m trying to write a scene, and I’m just stuck, I will go for a long walk or a long drive so that my mind can relax. Then, I attack the pages with a fresh perspective.

DONNELL: Dog person or cat person?

CYNTHIA: Dog. My dog Yogi was a shelter pet I adopted, and he is awesome.

DONNELL: Which is your favorite language other than your native language?

CYNTHIA:My husband is Greek, so…Greek.

DONNELL: What’s the first thing you do when you finish a book?

CYNTHIA: Eat some celebratory chocolate.

DONNELL: Why of course! What author(s) inspired you in your writing?

CYNTHIA:Jayne Ann Krentz has always been a huge inspiration for me. She can write such wonderful stories in a variety of romance sub-genres. I love her writing ability! Her book, The Pirate, was the second romance book I ever read. It hooked me on the genre, and I’ve been addicted to romance since then!
