Jacqui Nelson’s North of the Border with guest Ardelle Holden

Who’s next on my North of the Border guest blog series? Today we have Ardelle Holden, author of A Person of Interest and Murder by Bits and Bytes!

Where does Ardelle get her inspiration? How is Canada part of her inspiration? Read on and see...

I started out as a child, but soon became a gas jockey, chambermaid, waitress, switchboard telephone operator, marine radio operator, catalogue clerk, bank teller, securities clerk, air service radio operator/office manager, shipping clerk, wife, bookkeeper in aviation and mining exploration, rivet bucker, columnist, wild rice harvester, mother, teacher, videographer, seamstress, student, medical office assistant, scrapbooker/retailer, government statistician, photographer, artist, and author. In the event that I never grow up, at least I have found my niche – writing.

Throughout my life, I have been writing. From articles and Art Society columns for my local paper in Manitoba, to grant applications and business manuals, and letters that verged on tomes – as evidenced by the additional postage necessary. My poetry and anecdotes have been published in the Ojo del Lago in Ajijic, Jalisco. But A Person of Interest was my first novel - my baby - with the gestation period of an elephant.

A Person of Interest

Samantha’s pulse raged. Could they hear it from down the alley? She hesitated, held her breath, and listened. In the darkness, pelting rain muffled the voices of the two men she knew would soon round the corner and see her silhouetted against the light from the street beyond. Ahead she spotted the dark recess of a delivery entrance. As her mind raced, Samantha’s feet struggled in nightmarish slow motion against the grip of debris and rushing water that conspired to drag her backwards into danger. The instant she reached the doorway, she leapt up onto the threshold. Pressing her back hard against the ridges of the cold metal door, she wished she could melt into it like a Dali watch.

I don’t know what inspired A Person of Interest except to say I had nightmares as a child. Trying to escape in slow motion while my demons had the speed of a cheetah filled my little heart with terror. I would wake in a sweat, panting. Those were the nights I ran to my parent’s bed and snuggled down between them.

But the cottage in A Person of Interest is based on a version of my childhood summer camp on Vermillion Lake in Northwestern Ontario – and here’s why.

Bow-Manor: A Daydreamer’s Paradise

My father, Robert Rowell Bowman built Bow-Manor in an octagon because the logs, which were actually railway ties, were only eight feet long. After a few years, he added a verandah around the front three sections of the cabin and bedrooms off either end of it. All bets were nailed to the floor before he ceremoniously cut off the centre pole.

Despite the ever present possibility of bear encounters in my wanderings, growing up at camp was peaceful. I traipsed up the beach visiting my friends in other camps, pressed wildflowers and leaves, chopped wood, swam, fished, built rafts and daydreamed.

There was a secluded spot on the point between our beach and the big beach where I could sit on a huge rock completely hidden. The rock had a hollow carved out of it just waiting for a day-dreamer like me. I could look down into the water and watch the minnows skimming over the sand between the rocks. Leaves would float by and bob on the wake of passing boats. The chirping birds, the lapping water, the boats and the jingling of the poplar (aspen) leaves are as fresh in my mind now as they were sixty years ago.

You can see the point behind Sniffer and me at the end of our beach. Sniffer was from Hollywood, but that’s another story.

I visited many far flung places from my rock. I think I was even on the dig at Troy. That’s the year I was reading of adventures in archaeology.

So, you can see why, when I needed the perfect refuge for Samantha, I chose a version of Bow-Manor, but then I couldn’t foresee the violence at Chambers Lane Cottage in Murder by Bits and Bytes.

Murder by Bits and Bytes
Sequel to A Person of Interest

Getting to know Samantha and Ben in A Person of Interest has been an extraordinary experience, so much so that I could not leave them to live their lives in peace—I had to revisit them. What I discovered so horrified me I had to write the sequel – Murder by Bits and Bytes.

Excerpt from Murder by Bits and Bytes

Samantha’s world spun in a blur as she swivelled on her heels until her eyes fixed on something white near the shore. She blinked to clear her tears. “What is that?”

A sneaker bobbed against a rock. She ignored the bone-chilling water as she rushed in to grasp the shoe before it could be swept away. It was Ben’s, and it was still laced… Samantha screamed his name as she scanned the steel-grey river downstream as far as she could see. She squinted into the depths of the overhanging vegetation on the other shore. Pitching over the slippery rocks and sand along the shore, she spotted two deep drag marks that scored the embankment. Almost blinded by tears, her eyes darted across the surface again, upstream and down, before she staggered up past the fire pit, following the drag marks to where they grew faint in the hard ground at the foot of the front steps of the cottage. There, they ended – or began?

Chamber’s Lane Cottage was no longer Samantha’s peaceful refuge.

THE Q&A
ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?
ANNA: I always seem to be lost in one story or another. I don’t get to read for pleasure as often as I like, so I’ve mostly been lost in Butterfly Harbor, Sacramento, California (where my romantic suspense books are set), or in the Forgotten Realm of my paranormal series. That’s where I am as I’m writing this, LOL.

ANGI: What’s your favorite thing about your book’s hero?
ANNA: Xander Costas is one of those heroes that I had trouble figuring out, but in the end, I think his devotion to his family (his parents and siblings) that really hit my heart. There’s nothing he won’t do for them, even if it’s not in his own best interest.

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
ANNA: Oh, wow. Of ALL time? I’d have to go with The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHaviland. It’s got everything, action, romance, adventure, and a heroine who is spunky and can take care of herself. I’ve got about a dozen runners up tho, LOL.
ANGI: OH MY GOSH !!  I don’t think anyone has chosen my childhood movie favorite. I own all versions of this film (Video, DVD, Blu-ray, Digital) and watch it all the time.

ANGI: What’s your perfect day?
ANNA: I had one not too long ago. A nice, cozy, almost lazy Sunday curled up in the living room easy chair with my blanket, my cats, and my kindle, reading something I haven’t written. Getting lost in someone else’s world, getting out of my own head, with a cup of hot chocolate nearby? Yeah, doesn’t get any better than that. Unless it’s a day out with my best friend going to the movies and just goofing off.

ANGI: Salad or soup?
ANNA: Hmmm. Depends on the season. I usually order salad, but if clam chowder is on the menu? That would be the exception.

ANGI: Would you put yourself in a Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?
ANNA: Action for sure.

ANGI: Favorite movie you watch every time you channel surf?
ANNA: The aforementioned Adventures of Robin Hood. Ocean’s 11, Victor/Victoria, and, if I hit it at the right time, the last 45 minutes of the Shawshank Redemption. A gut punch, every time but it’s sooooo good.

ANGI: Favorite date night…fancy or at home?
ANNA: I’d go with fancy. I spend too much time at home.

ANGI: Champagne or Soda?
ANNA: As I recently gave up sugar, champagne.

ANGI: Geek or Jock?
ANNA: Geek. They’d get me.

ANGI: The most favorite thing you’ve ever done… Care to share?
ANNA: Gone on vacation with my best friend is top of the list. We’ve done a tour of England, Hawaii, and have hit Disneyland I don’t know how many times. Runner up? Going to a yearly writing convention with my writer friends. I love reconnecting with my tribe.

ANGI’s GOTTA ASK:  SHOW ME YOUR FAVORITE SHOES…

ANNA’S GOTTA ANSWER:  This was an easy answer. My Wonder Woman Crocks. I’m a WW freak from way back and when I saw these online…no question about getting them. I can just about hear the TV theme in my head whenever I wear them. Oh, wait. No. That’s just my ring tone. 😊

UP NEXT for ANNA:
My next main releases (other than 2 novellas coming out in Heart’s Kiss Magazine) both come out in September. I’m actually really excited that I have both a Harlequin Heartwarming AND a Harlequin Romantic suspense out at the same time. Both sides of my personality in one month.

ANNA WANTS TO KNOW:  Part of what Xander learns from Calliope is to stop and listen to the world around him. If you had the chance to go anywhere and reconnect with nature, just leave everything behind for a few hours, where would it be? Me? It would have to be the beach. There’s something about the sound of the tide and the waves that brings me instant peace.

THE Q&A
ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?
DONNA:  A bit ironically, now that I’m writing more, I have less time to read. But I have a constant TBR pile on the go and often will be reading at least two books at the same time. It just takes me longer to finish a book than it used to.

ANGI: What’s your favorite thing about your book’s hero?
DONNA:  I love Paul’s vulnerability and the fact that he is so protective of Tyson and  ultimately willing to put his pride on the line so that he can be a better guardian.

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
DONNA:  Ooh, that’s a tough one – movie I don’t know, but I will say that my all-time favorite TV series is Gilmore Girls.

ANGI: What’s your perfect day?
DONNA:  A perfect day to me is one that’s unstructured, unscheduled. I’m such a homebody at heart and I love having time to read, write, spend time with family, do Bible study, watch a good cozy mystery etc.

ANGI: Salad or soup?
DONNA:  Soup!

ANGI: Would you put yourself in a Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?
DONNA:  Probably a fairy tale

ANGI: Favorite TV rerun you watch every time you channel surf?
DONNA:  Gilmore Girls, as mentioned above. I also tend to re-watch many of the Hallmark mysteries.

ANGI: Champagne or Soda?
DONNA: Both are great depending on the occasion.

ANGI: Geek or Jock?
DONNA:  Oh I love a cute geek – even though I guess my hero would fit more into the jock category. But I considered him a geek – in the best way – at heart.

ANGI’s GOTTA ASK:  SHOW ME YOUR FAVORITE SHOES… and tell us why they’re important.
DONNA’S GOTTA ANSWER:   I love my Sketchers because they are comfy and I do a lot of walking

Amanda hosts #storiesoftheheart-First-time Grandma

The Joys of  being a first-time Grandma

by Amanda McIntyre

 April 1, 2019
Today is about firsts, in particular with relation to being a ‘first-time’ grandma. Of course, you
One week old
remember (though you have to refer to baby books now) your own children’s “firsts”, but there is something wonderful about experiencing those moments again as a grandparent! Such is the case with our Winston James.

We have been blessed beyond measure to have been involved in caring for him as granny-nannies almost since his birth. Entrusted by his folks to watch him each day, share in the joys, the struggles, the concerns, prayers—the ‘firsts’. (Another first is walking through your child's “first’ moments as a parent, as well!!)

One year old

Today, April 1, he’ll turn TWO, I can hardly believe it! This little man I call my grandson. Aside from the fact that I think the sun rises and sets with him--he is tender-hearted, bright, curious, imaginative, and rambunctious enough to give us a glimpse into the lively next chapters-to-be! For example, the FIRST of welcoming a new sibling into his life in just a few weeks! (And we are blessed to be able to help with this next one as well!)

Heading for Two
Mercy! (My grandmother used to say) there are a great many ‘firsts’ yet on the horizon. But for now, I’m glowing in the thrill, the utter joy of hearing him call out “gigi” or when he hollers “pawpaw” while looking for his grandpa. It’s akin to getting the best present ever on Christmas morning!

Almost Two

Amanda McIntyre lives in the Heartland and is grateful to share life with her best-friend, husband-Mark, their four amazing grown children, one phenomenal daughter-in-law, one brilliant grandchild (and another incoming) a menagerie of grand-dogs and grand-cats, as well as her ever -growing circle of family and friends.
