A brief interview with Lisa:

Jillian: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
Lisa: Rocky. It was the first time I’d ever seen a movie that allowed the hero to lose. It raised an important point that you don’t have to win to be a champion. Very intense.
Jillian: Who’s your favorite villain?
Lisa: The Evil Queen from Snow White. She was a woman with a plan and she wouldn’t let anyone or anything get in her way. I thought she was a nearly perfect villain.
Jillian: Be honest, when reading 1st person...do you miss the hero’s POV?
Lisa: Yes! So I’m writing a werewolf series in alternating first person so you get the heroine and the hero’s POV. Hope to have a publisher for the Moon Series soon.
Jillian: Do you write while listening to music? If so what kind?
Lisa: Yes I do! I usually make a soundtrack for each book I write to help me keep the mood and tone of the story. Often the playlist has lots of music from movie soundtracks and some classical music. Each character usually has a theme song too which probably has words.
Jillian: What’s the first thing you do when you finish writing a book?
Lisa: Happy dance!!!

GOTTA ASK. GOTTA ANSWER.
(I gotta ask and she's gotta answer!)

At a recent RWASD meeting guest speaker Leis Pederson was asked about whether she would consider manuscripts from authors who self-publish. She seemed to be perfectly okay with the idea. More and more authors have NY publishing contracts and are self-publishing their back list titles. With all this in mind, please share your venture into the e-book world with both our readers and writers.

Jillian: What got you started thinking about self-publishing your short fiction? A friend, a blog, a workshop?
Lisa: I have a short story anthology I’m working on editing to self-publish. Traditionally publishers aren’t interested in anthologies by new authors so it seemed like a perfect fit to try digital self-publishing.

While editing, I had one story that was too long to fit in this anthology, but too short to really submit to an ePublisher. During an online class with Laurie McLean from the Larson-Pomada agency, she encouraged me to self-publish the story as a stand-alone title. Across the Veil was edited and published a few weeks later.

Jillian: Could you share a little bit about the process of self-publishing? Is it difficult? Time-consuming? What is the reporting process like? Do they send you a check quarterly? Are you pleased with the results?
Lisa: I have been pleased with the results so far! It’s not making me rich at .99, but it is garnering attention from book bloggers. I’ve gotten some great reviews so far and now the reviewers are anxious to review my new novel, Night Walker! I would not have had any name-recognition within the review community if I hadn’t self-published Across the Veil.

Jillian: For our reader fans out there, which sites is your short story on and why did you choose those particular sites?
Lisa: As far as I know, Across the Veil is available everywhere that you can buy eBooks and for all of the eReader formats.

Lisa has a question she'd like to ask our readers: How do you find new eBooks? Do you surf reviews? Ads on blogs and facebook? How would you find a new self-published author? BTW, one lucky winner will receive a free PDF copy of Across the Veil and a signed set of Night Walker romance trading cards. Woot!

  1. Hi Lisa! Welcome to GLIAS :) An opera singer? Oh, how I envy you! Musical theatre is my secret desire...well, that, or working as a torch singer. Sadly, I haven't the voice for either...

    Congrats on your successes!

  2. Welcome to GLIAS Lisa. ACROSS THE VEIL sounds very interesting and so does NIGHT WALKER. Most of the e-books I find are through word of mouth. SOmeone recommends a book or I might see the author blogging/tweeting/Facebooking (is this a word--anyway). I actually don't have time to surf the net or look. But again, I don't go to a lot of bookstores either.

  3. Hi Lisa! Great to have you here on GLIAS!

When it comes to reading material, particularly e-books, I rely on friends and reviews. Come to think of it, it's pretty much the same as print! I do notice book ads on Facebook. Plus, I'm going to make an effort to get more involved in Good Reads as well.

  4. Hi Heather! *waving*

It's funny you should mention singing because the industry is actually very similar to writing... LOTS of rejection!!! LOL

    I must be sick... :)

But I do love music and writing anyway!

    Thanks for commenting!

  5. Hi Angi -

It good to hear you notice the facebook ads! I've always wondered if anyone pays a attention. I know you can buy them and only have to pay when people click the ad, but I didn't know if they were effective at all...

    Thanks for commenting!!!

  6. Hi Lisa,
Hello to another professional vocalist. We're at opposite ends of the cultural spectrum as I sing Americana/Country but it still equals standing on a stage sharing your voice so I'm always happy to meet another female vocalist.

I decide on who to buy ebooks from reviews from other bloggers I trust, or comments people leave on my site sharing books they love.

  9. Can I just say that I can't wait for Night Walker to come out. I started to see it popping up on blogs within the last few months and it looks so good. I instantly placed it on my wishlist. For me, the way I come across new ebooks is through visiting different blogs. I tend to not pay attention to ads but if there happens to be a book that keeps popping up on various blogs I will definitely look into it.

  10. Hi Lisa

I'm from New Zealand and ebooks aren't really taking off here yet, largely due to DRM issues ie. Amazon doesn't make all eBooks available for overseas yet. The Aussi's and Kiwi's still tend to buy paper, largely through www.bookdepository.co.uk - free world wide delivery and with the pound so low the price is fabulous. Also because NZ is so small hardly any romance books get sold here. We have to buy them overseas. Only takes a few days to deliver all the way to NZ.

  11. Hi, Lisa! Welcome to GLIAS! Congratulations on your four book contract with Entangled. I'm hearing marvelous things about them. I know quite a few self-published authors who are also fabulous award-winning authors. I don't have time to surf for new authors unfortunately, so word of mouth does a great service for self-published authors as well as traditional presses. Word of mouth to me still sells books.

By the way, I agree with you about the movie Rockie. Gotta love a man who's so beaten down and who builds himself up.

    Thanks for being here.

  12. Lisa:

I'm just another writer wh[o's also [a singer. I do broadway show tunes when performing with a local amateur company. I'm also a member of RWASD but live in the desert so I don't get to many meetings. And I've got a book under consideration at Entangled. Today - our anniversary - hubby and I bought a Nook so I'm in the market for great e-reads. NIGHT WALKER will be on my list.

  13. Hi Danielle! *waving*

So glad to hear you're excited about Night Walker!!! I can't wait to finally share the book with everyone... :)

Good to hear you find new eBooks from blogs. I'll be doing many more guest blog spots than actual book signings so it's encouraging... Do you think with so many bookstores closing that online Book Blogs become more important?

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  20. Hello Lisa,

I find a lot of new authors on Goodreads and other blogs. And because I have my own blog sometimes authors e-mail me with the question if I would like to read and review their book. I love to find new authors because most of the time they write better books than the authors we already know.
I can't wait to start reading Night Walker.
Good luck on the rest of your tour!
