I was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I am an east coaster at heart. I am also an only child which I contribute to my overactive imagination. If my friends and I couldn’t get together I would create stories to keep me company. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t making up stories to keep me entertained. I knew I wanted to write and one day I would share my stories.
When I was growing up in the late 1980s my source of social entertainment and information was CBC. Much Music and Video Hits introduced me to one of my favorite Canadian singer/songwriters, Sarah McLachlan. Also, from Halifax, I was in awe of Sarah. Her debut album, Touch, struck a cord within me. Here was a woman from the same place I was from and she was living her dreams. She was doing what she was meant to be doing. Making music to share with us. Her music was and still provides me with comfort and a sense of connection to mind, body and spirit.
As I ventured off to Lake Louise, Alberta, to work for a luxury hotel chain in the Canadian Rockies, Sarah was with me. Listening to Elsewhere while staring at the Victoria Glacier on Lefroy Mountain was inspirational. I knew that being in the mountains was no accident. I loved living by the ocean, but there was something magical about the mountains that I was exploring. During the summers I would hike as often as I could and when the snow fell, I would change my hiking boots for cross-country skies and glide along the freshly fallen snow. I loved being outside in nature. When my family lived in Ontario, we would visit my grandparents' farm as often as possible. I remember my family and I snowmobiling from my dad’s childhood farmhouse to the Lake nearby and having a snowy lunch picnic by a fire pit. Hot chocolate, marshmallows and lightly falling snow into my Thermos cup make for great memories.
I knew I would write about my time in the Canadian Rockies, but I wasn’t sure what I would write about. As I moved from one hotel to another, I started to recognize my talents as a hotelier and knew that I wanted to share my experiences about working in hotels, but not just the “business” side, but what it was like to be an employee.
Like a songwriter, I am writing about experiences that people can relate to. Sarah McLachlan songs are about love, breaking up, being a mother, friend and lover. Like Sarah, my stories are about life experiences in the hotel world and everything in-between. Try serving an anniversary dinner to a couple when you are going through a break-up and your ex is serving in the next section. It wasn’t easy, but I kept my permanent, fake-it-until-I-make smile on through the whole experience. Like songwriting, writing a novel is connected to creativity, as the ocean and mountains are connected to one another.

BEHIND THE KITCHEN DOORS
If you liked, Kitchen Confidential and The Grand Budapest Hotel, you will enjoy this eye-opening life experience of one employee's journey of working for a luxury hotel in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
When Marion Ann step on the plane for Alberta to work for a luxury hotel in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, she never thought her life would change. Sure, her first job was in the food service industry at McDonald’s, but the Golden Arches had nothing on the Chateau Lake Louise. A mountain resort where employees came to either experience a good time away from home, or to hide from secrets. Marion Ann was living both lives. She needed some time to heal from a broken love triangle and the secret of her not being the shy little girl she had been labeled for most of her youth.
When she was faced with a platter of cocaine during her first few weeks of working at the resort, she knew life wasn’t going to be the same.
Intimate and truthful, Behind The Kitchen Doors is a coming of age for one employee who found out that working atop of a beautiful mountain came with a price.

It's always nice to hear about a writer's journey.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kathleen. Who is one of your favourite Canadian singer-song writers?
ReplyDeleteSo nice to learn more about you, Marion Ann! My favourite Canadian singer/song writer is Bryan Adams! I remember putting one of his CDs on our family computer while I connected to dial up internet to MSN chat with my friends. Such good music to jam to, I love his energy.
ReplyDeleteThank you Allie,
DeleteGreat memory about Bryan Adams. Also a very talented Canadian singer-song writer.
Enjoyed the interview, Marion Ann! We visited Halifax when I was a child (my great-grandfather lived there) and I loved it. The people are so kind. It was the first time I heard od roundabouts, lol. In Alberta we call them traffic circles :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Canadian artist has to be Gordon Lightfoot- born in 1938, Orillia, Ontario. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986. He song, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, based on true events, resonated deeply with me. He's a storyteller- my kind of guy!
Thank you jbiggar,
DeleteI love Gordan Lightfoot.. His music was part of my family household as well. Thank you for sharing your wonderful memories of visiting Halifax. Those roundabouts were my nemesis when I first started to drive. I think they prepared me for the Victoria airport roundabouts. LOL.
I'm with jbiggar. Gord Lightfoot is my favourite Canadian song-writer. I'm so impressed by how much he can say in so few words. "The Patriot's Dream" is a great example of evocative story-telling.
ReplyDeleteThank you Alice,
ReplyDeleteI can hear Gordon's voice now. He is an amazing story teller. Thank you for sharing.

Oh goodness my favorite singer from Canada is Shana Twain and I love her story of when she was growing up how they would have her sing in the bars and it helps all of her brother and sisters. She has had a tough life and always climbs back out and shines. Love her voice she brought a toughness and sassy back to country sung by a female. Peggy Clayton ptclayton2@aol.com
ReplyDeleteThank you Peggy for sharing. Shania is great! I have a story about Shania when I was working at the Hotel MacDonald in Edmonton. But that's for my next book, Behind the Front Desk...Here's to strong-sassy women!
ReplyDeleteI loved reading your bio, Marion, and so look forward to reading your book. I hail from Alberta and love those wonderful old CPR hotels, especially Chateau Lake Louise and Banff Springs Hotel in the Rockies, plus the Paliser Hotel in Calgary. I think there's the Hotel MacDonald (I think) in Edmonton and a beauty in Victoria, but the latter two I haven't visited, yet.I attended a writers conference and stayed several nights at the Paliser...it's a different world when I entered those elegant old hotels. I'm so glad you're writing about your adventures and giving readers glimpses of our beautiful country. I have a trilogy of historical romance books set in the beautiful Cypress Hills which are just a stone throw from where I live in Medicine Hat. One of my sons is a chef at a restaurant in Calgary, so I know he'll enjoy reading your story, too. I almost forgot: my favourite Canadian singer/songwriter is Shania Twain and Johnny Reid and Ian Tyson tie for second place. All three are such wonderful songwriters and I particularly love Ian's songs that celebrate the cowboy life.
ReplyDeleteThank you Elizabeth for sharing your memories. I worked for Chateau Lake Louise when it was still a CP hotel, what a great experience! I also worked at the Palliser, Jasper Park Lodge and Hotel MacDonald in Edmonton. I am so grateful for all the wonderful experiences in Alberta. I hope you and your son will enjoy my memoir about working at Lake Louise, as a Chef you son will have a laugh or two.
DeleteGreat singer and song writers - I have enjoyed their music over the years as well.
Thank you again for stopping by.
I've always envied people who grew up in one place. I moved so often as a child it made my head spin. I would have to say I enjoy singers of the west, like Colin James, Bryan Adams and Chilliwack.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jodi. I love Colin James and Bryan Adams. Love their voices and music.
