Hello, everyone!  It's my birthday today, but you're going to get the presents!

Up for grabs are signed copies of the first two books in my Doctors in Danger miniseries--Enticed by the Operative and Dr. Do or Die.  And because everyone needs something to drink while they read, I'm also throwing in a $5 gift card to Starbucks!  Use the Rafflecopter form below to enter through Sunday (US residents only please).

Here are the back cover blurbs for the books:

Enticed by the Operative

The lives of a beautiful surgeon and her DEA agent protector are at stake in this thrilling tale!
On a medical mission to South America, Dr. Olivia Sandoval hardly expects to be threatened by a drug cartel. To save lives, Olivia agrees to transport drugs for them. When DEA agent Logan Murray appears as her partner-in-crime and rescuer, Olivia's relieved…and drawn to her knight in shining armor.
Logan jumps at the chance to guard a beautiful woman and bring down a drug ring. After all, neither he nor Olivia are looking for forever love—just justice. But one kiss changes that as they go on the run. When taken hostage in the jungle, they must not only defeat the enemy—but also escape with their lives!

Dr. Do or Die

Two doctors are on thin ice as they race to save the world from a deadly disease.
Epidemic researcher Dr. Avery Thatcher has studied countless illnesses…but nothing prepares her for what she finds at a remote Antarctic base: the man she never wanted to see again and a mysterious ailment ravaging inhabitants. Avery will do whatever it takes to discover the illness's cause, and she vows to keep her heartbreaking history with Dr. Grant Jones in the past—even if reignited passion brings them dangerously close.
For Grant, ending this outbreak and regaining Avery's trust are vital. As their hunt to contain a lethal pathogen escalates, he'll put everything on the line to avert disaster. But will another insidious threat stop them both cold?

We're going to have a pretty low-key celebration tonight--dinner and frozen custard.  I don't want a birthday cake--I'm trying to cut down on sugar, and if I have a cake in my fridge I will eat it all! :)

Hope you guys have a nice weekend! Good luck!

MEET D.D.!

A veteran author of romance and women's fiction, D.D. AYRES is new to Romantic Suspense. She believes the lure of romance is always the human connection. Put that connection in physical jeopardy, and we learn a bit more about who we really are.

With her K-9 Rescue series, D.D. hopes you will enjoy her sexy, suspenseful portrayals of K-9 teams at their best. D.D. lives in Texas with her husband.  She lost her soft-coated Wheaten terrier named Zoe last year.  She’s looking forward to giving a new dog a home this summer.

Lara: What’s the first book you remember reading?
DD: Mr. Bear Squash –You-All-Flat, a Golden book, of course.  It was about a crank bear who destroyed  the homes in a small community of forest animals until they decided to ban together and live inside an old tire.  He couldn’t squash the tire.  A Three Little Pigs kind of tale.

Lara: Where do you read and how often?
DD:  I read for pleasure mostly at night and usually before I go to bed.  In bed.  I know you’re not supposed to do that but it’s good for priming the brain for story ideas while sleeping.

Lara: What’s your favorite kind of story to get lost in?
DD:   Any story that can make me forget I’m reading this author and just grabs my attention.  It could be the uniqueness of the opening, the way the writer uses the words, the unusual voice of a character.  I’ve read so much, when I can turn off the editor in my head and just read, I’m in heaven.  Romance, suspense, humor, it doesn’t matter.

Lara: What is your biggest vice?
DD: Outside book buying?  I’m a sucker for hot yeast bread fresh from the oven. [Lara: Yum!]

Lara: What’s the first thing you do when you finish writing a book?
DD: Cry.  Well, only sometimes.  It’s an emotional moment, every time.  My husband and I usually open a bottle of champagne.  I love those bubbles.  Then I sleep a long time.

Lara: What is your hero’s “kryptonite” – in other words, what will bring him instantly to his knees?
DD: Usually, a little act of kindness, by the heroine, naturally.  In Explosive Forces, it is my heroine’s playful side.  Hero Noah Glover is a no-nonsense arson investigator with an explosives dog named Harley.  He’s been through a lot, bad marriage, trouble on the job, and now someone’s trying to kill him.  Along comes the heroine, and her special “kisses.” They bring him to his knees.  What are they?  Read the book.

Lara: What drew you to write in the genre(s) you do?
DD: A story that came to me.  I often go with story first.  That has taken me over the years from writing historical romance to westerns, to contemporary, women’s fiction and now as D. D. Ayres, romantic suspense.  Sometimes it’s a while before I get to use the story idea.  But characters usually grab me first, before I know what the book’s all about.  Occasionally, the set-up comes first.

Lara’s GOTTA ASK:  What inspires you daily?
DD’s GOTTA ANSWER:   The idea that what I do for a living is a privilege.  I don’t have to be a writer.  I could be doing something much easier, less crazy-making, and more reliable in terms of a regular paycheck and job security.  Writers, like all other artists, live a gypsy life, accepting rejection, having to reinvent ourselves and stay fresh, dealing with disappointment sometimes that our work is not greeted more enthusiastically.  It’s an uncertain career.  I don’t have to do it.  I do it because I can, and I love it, and it’s given me untold pleasure to entertain readers with my imagination.

Celebrate Nana Prah's debut!

Hi everyone!  I'm so thrilled to welcome Harlequin Kimani debut author Nana Prah to the blog today!  Nana and I have been blog buddies for a while now, and I've been cheering her on as her publishing career has taken off. Her debut novel with Harlequin Kimani is out now, and it's sure to be the first of many awesome books!

A Perfect Caress
Harlequin® Kimani TM Romance

ISBN: 978-0-373-86480-5

THE STORY BLURB
From the very first touch…
The moment suave businessman Dante Sanderson brushes hands with Lanelle Murphy, he can't get her out of his head. The guarded beauty resists all of his polished attempts at seduction. To soften the pain in her past, she's dedicated her life and family fortune to helping others, not chasing sexy millionaires like Dante.
Something about Lanelle makes Dante want to open his heart like never before. He knows their encounters are destiny. Lanelle is sure their sparks mean another heartache is in the making. Yet her cherished new project—a state-of-the-art neonatal unit—brings them together. From charity ball dances to strolls in Milan, desire pushes her…right into his arms. But will Lanelle be able to seize this sweet second chance at love?

EXCERPT

Without warning, Dante invaded her space and tilted her into a dip. Gripping the shoulders of his tuxedo, she scowled into his smiling face as the blood rushed to her head. Before she could chastise him, he brought her upright.
She hated surprises. Being out of control ranked number one on her never-to-do list. Dante threatened all of that. From the few stories Vanessa had told her about him, they were as different as a waltz and a tango. “Talk.”
Should she be feeling the deep rumble of his laughter against her chest? When had he pulled her so close? She tried to create space between them. His hand splayed at her back made it impossible.
“Do you ever loosen up?”
She snapped her head up. Even though she was wearing stilettos, he loomed over her. “You’ve met me, what? All of twice? You have no idea who I am.”
He leaned in close, his breath tickling her ear as he whispered, “But I’d like to.”
All thoughts of why she’d come on the dance floor escaped as he pressed his cheek against hers. For once in her life Lanelle lost herself in the gentle sway of a man’s embrace.

MEET NANA!
Nana Prah first discovered romance in a book from her eight grade summer reading list and has been obsessed with it ever since. Her fascination with love inspired her to write in her favorite genre where happily-ever-after is the rule.

She is a published author of contemporary, multicultural romances. Her books are sweet with a touch of spice. When she’s not writing she’s, over-indulging in chocolate, enjoying life with friends and family, and tormenting nursing students into being the best nurses the world has ever seen.

LET'S CHAT!

Lara: How often to you get lost in a story?
Nana: Almost every time I open a book. Especially when it’s really good. In my former book reviews I would explain how I wanted to be a secret spy, Bollywood actress, carpenter, superhero, engineer, or stripper all because I had gotten so into the characters lives. Getting lost in a novel is my favorite part about reading fiction.

Lara: What was the first story you remember writing?
Nana: My first full length romance was more of a suspense, or so I thought. When I gave it to an author friend to read, she tore it apart, which was a good thing because the suspense part seemed to be more inside my head instead of the story. I have learned so much since writing that romance. Someone told me I should revise it. I laughed because the novel is so flawed that it would just be easier to write a new one. [Lara: I can relate to that!]

Lara: Do you write while listening to music? If so what kind?
Nana: I love to dance, to all kinds of music, I’ll sway to the slow and shimmy to the fast. With that said, I’ll admit that I don’t write while listening to music, only because I lose focus and start grooving. [Lara: Me too! :)]

Lara: Which of your characters would you most/least to invite to dinner, and why?
Nana: I would invite Dante from A Perfect Caress, just because he’s so sexy with his bald head, hard-working nature, loads of money, and fantastic sense of humor. He’s my kind of man. Unfortunately( or is it fortunate?) he’s Lanelle’s type of man, too.

Lara: What drew you to write in the genre(s) you do?
Nana: I’m a huge fan of romance. In high school I worked in a library and when the librarian once asked why people read romances, I was too shocked to speak. Why doesn’t everyone read romances is a better question? I write them because I’m addicted and want others to fall in love with them, too.

Lara: What three things are, at this moment, in your heroine’s purse, satchel, reticule, weapons belt or amulet bag (whatever she carries)?
Nana: Lipstick, which I actually mention in the novel when she’s trying to get Dante’s niece to slap some on, car keys, and I wish I could say throwing stars, but her phone will have to do.

Lara: What is your hero’s “kryptonite” – in other words, what will bring him instantly to his knees?
Nana: Injury to his marble. There is no euphemism here. Dante is obsessed with marble, especially from Carrara. It’s how he makes his money and where his passion (other than his family and Lanelle) lies.

Lara: What’s your favorite “love” word?
Nana: Amore – I know it means love in Italian, but it reminds me of the song That’s Amore – “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that’s…” Plus everything is more romantic in Italian.

Lara’s GOTTA ASK:  What are the next five books on your ‘to be read’ pile?

Nana’s GOTTA ANSWER:   1. Captive by Kiru Taye – actually I just finished reading it today and thought it warranted a mention.
2. Requiem for the Living (The Reanimation Files Book #2) by A.J. Locke who is fast becoming one of my favorite paranormal authors
3. A Chase for Christmas by Candace Shaw – There’s nothing like a Christmas romance to bring in the season of giving (and weight gain)
4. Silk and Scandal by Cassandra Dean – A historical novella which I’ve been meaning to read for ages
5. All He Wants for Christmas by Elle Wright – The first three books were delicious
