Tessa McFionn is a very native Californian and has called Southern California home for most of her life, growing up in San Diego and attending college in Northern California and Orange County, only to return to San Diego to work as a teacher. Insatiably curious and imaginative, she loves to learn and discover, making her wicked knowledge of trivial facts an unwelcomed guest at many Trivial Pursuit boards. She also finds her artistic soul fed through her passions for theatre, dance and music, as well as the regular trip to The Happiest Place on Earth with friends and family.Jillian: Is there a playlist you’d recommend for reading your latest release?
Tessa: Ooh. I love to listen to music as I write. Each character has a different soundtrack. In my latest book, Spirit Bound, I listened to a very ecclectic mix of heavy metal and electronica. Disturbed and Tiesto were huge influences in my story. My boys tend to listen to the hard stuff.
Jillian: What sound or noise do you love?
Tessa: My favorite sound is the surf. Oddly enough, I don’t like the beach that much. I know, and to be a native Southern Californian, that’s practically a stoning offense. I do hit the beach at night and usually during the winter. But I do have a recording of the surf on my phone and listen to it when I need a recharge.
Jillian: Describe your favorite kind of hero to read/write?
Tessa: I love a hero who refuses to give up on love. He doesn’t necessarily have to have had a horrible past, but he needs to have a caring heart and a fiercely protective streak. Gotta have a strong female to balance him out and to bring out all the good in him.
Jillian: Be honest, when reading 1st person...do you miss the hero’s POV?
Tessa: Oh gods yes!!! I want to know what’s going on in his mind, not to mention any other characters. I feel that while in real life, we can’t know what others are thinking, fiction is always so far from real and I wanna know what is going on in everyone’s mind!
Jillian: What do you do to unwind and relax?
Tessa: My favorite way to reconnect is gonna sound a little strange. But for me, the best unwind day is spent at Disneyland. My husband bought me an Annual Passport for my birthday about four years ago and I just can’t imagine not having one. I love a play day at the House that Walt built!
Jillian: Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing.
Tessa: I do. I check Amazon and Goodreads regularly to see if I have any new responses. I make it a point to say thank you for every review I receive, even the odd ones. I listen to the feedback, but I don’t change things because someone didn’t like a character or event.
Jillian: What’s your favorite kid joke?
Tessa: Oh I have to do this one! Worst joke ever! Why are elephants big, gray and wrinkley? Because if they were small, round and white, they’d be aspirins.
