E.E.'s 10th Anniversary Celebration: PIcking Up Steam!

Ten years ago, I officially entered the world of romance writing when I submitted a manuscript to the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart contest. To my utter amazement and delight, I made the finals in November, 2010. That moment gave me the impetus and encouragement I needed to send me down a path to becoming a published author.

This month, I’m celebrating with a special focus on my original
romance series, Steam! Romance and Rails
It all started with an idea and a friendship with two other 2010 Golden Heart finalists, Jacqui Nelson and Jennifer Jakes. I had been working on a railroad romance, and we were all ardent fans of the series Hell On Wheels. I proposed a joint effort, which we turned into three love stories woven together around a common historical event–a gritty, glamorous railroad race.

The anthology Passion’s Prize launched the series with Adella’s Enemy by Jacqui Nelson, Eden’s Sin by Jennifer Jakes and Kate’s Outlaw by yours truly. You can still pick up each of the novellas originally featured in this anthology. I’ll go into more detail on the historical underpinnings of the series in my next blog post. In the meantime, here is an interview I did shortly after publishing the first full-length novel of the series, Her Bodyguard.

What made you combine romance and rails?
That’s a good question. I guess something about the old steam railroads calls to my adventurous side, and to my romantic nature. But more specifically, when I touring a museum in Fort Scott, Kansas, a few years ago, I came across a small booklet about a railroad race. It had all the makings of an epic: crooked politics, underhanded landlords, angry mobs, liars, cheats, killers…I couldn’t imagine a more perfect setting for a great love story.

Tell us a little about the series.
The first books in the series are set against the background of a contentious construction race through southeastern Kansas between two powerful railroads with long names. The government promised the winning line free land grants and exclusive rights through this corridor into cattle-rich Texas so you can imagine how they pulled out all the stops and no one was above cheating.

Her Bodyguard, revolves around the story of the Border Tier. While its crews were trying to win a race, the railroad was feuding with settlers over land rights. That’s really the focus of my book. The heroine, Amy Langford, is a wealthy widow who’s invested heavily in the railroad and is looking for ways to appease the settlers so they’ll stop vandalizing the tracks. Only, someone is out to kill her. The hero, Buck O’Connor, is an outlaw who comes out of hiding to help his cousin avoid financial ruin. Through a twist of fate, he ends up being Amy’s bodyguard. He uses his position to thwart her railroad and help his cousin, while at the same time trying to protect her. You can see that isn’t going to work. But it takes Buck awhile to recognize this. He’s pretty sure of himself.

How much of the story is based in fact?
Quite a bit, actually! Honestly, I couldn’t come up with better scenarios than those I find in history books. The race really happened pretty much as it’s written, the settler’s riots, too. I love to use real events and include historical characters. In this case, I put two people very attracted to each other but with opposing goals in the middle of a cutthroat railroad competition and a land war. It was fun to see how they reacted.

Your books are based in the American West during the nineteenth century. Why that place, and why that era?
I write what I love best. I’ve always been a history geek, and particularly American history. I really got fascinated with the Western expansion when I first moved to Kansas. That period of expansion had such an impact on this country, good and bad. I don’t think people realize just how much. There are so many stories that haven’t been told and I want to tell them.
I try to strike a balance between gritty realism and romance, though I suppose I do err on the side of romance, but in many ways, that Victorian era was very romantic—even in the “Wild West.”

This month, all books in the series Steam! Romance and Rails are on sale for only 99 cents each. We’ve never offered this series at such a low price, so it’s a great time to forego that mocha latte and treat yourself to stories that will keep you warm all winter!

HER BODYGUARD: A determined railroad investor stalked by a mysterious killer seeks protection from a wanted gunslinger, who is hiding a dangerous secret.

KATE’S OUTLAW: After a railroad heiress is abducted, one of her captors becomes her protector. On the run from danger with enemies on all sides, they discover a love as powerful as it is forbidden.
Originally part of the anthology Passion’s Prize. Catch up on the stories of two other women caught up in a dangerous race for riches in Adella’s Enemy by Jacqui Nelson and Eden’s Sin by Jennifer Jakes.

A DANGEROUS PASSION: An inquisitive author sets out to expose a charismatic railroad baron and becomes ensnared in a deadly mystery and a dangerous passion.

FUGITIVE HEARTS: When a newly-made widow tries to cover up the truth behind her husband’s violent death, her plan backfires, sending her fleeing from a hardened lawman determined to bring her to justice.

Who out there has read books in this series? Do you have a favorite character? Who is it, and why are you drawn to them?

I’ll be doing a drawing to give away a $10 Amazon Gift Card to one commenter.

GLIAS crew, thanks for being on this journey with me!

Lizbeth's Name-dropping Birthday Weekend - Part 3

Happy Actual My Birthday day!! Welcome to day three of my Name-dropping Birthday Weekend Indulgence. I'm sharing three short posts about my relationship with a couple of my author heroes whom I’ve been blessed to meet and, in some cases, more-or-less befriend. Each one has inspired me in my own writing and has something special that makes her a superstar not just to me but to all her readers.

Today's dropped name is the one and only Kristan Higgins. I truly think she is one the most popular authors writing romance and women's fiction books today. Certainly she is one of the authors I look up to the most.

I first met Kristan after the RITA/Golden Heart ceremony at the 2010 RWA conference in Orlando. I had just received the honor of my life by winning the Golden Heart for
2010
Contemporary Single Title romance, and Kristan had won the RITA in the same category. I screwed up my courage and asked if she would take a picture with me. I didn't know yet how amazingly generous she is with her readers--but her eager willingness that night was my first taste of her amazing personality.

The second time I met Kristan was in an elevator at the RWA conference a year later. She was with her husband (McIrish is nearly as big a celeb as she is!) and we had just minutes to re-introduce ourselves and chat just a bit. Then I spoke with her after a presentation for maybe two minutes about some shared personal experiences.

Fast forward to the release of my second series for Avon books and I sent an email to Kristan asking if she'd participate in a week-long tribute to my writing heroines--of which she was one. I started the email: "I don't know that you'll remember me but..." Her response? "Liz--of course I remember you. How could I not?"

2018 -- Another RITA!!
Was I blown away? You bet I was! That moment I saw in action proof--that no matter how popular you are or how "famous" or busy you get, you can always be nice. And you can treat everyone with friendliness and a personal touch. Kristan didn't have to make me feel like I was one of her peers--but she did. She might be one of the A-listers but she elevates others into feeling like they're up in that list too.

May I always take that lesson to heart!

Kristan's newest book is "Good Luck With That"--a book that takes an honest and emotional look at the problem of women and weight and body image issues. She blogged about the controversy surrounding the novel:  check it out HERE
And here is Kristan's 2018 RITA-winning book "Now That You Mention It."

I hope you enjoyed my birthday indulgence--talking about the authors who've taught me so much about how to have a brilliant career. I owe them so much!

I'd love to know what authors you've met or read about and whom you now admire. What are some of your favorite books--I'm always looking to add to my TBR pile!!

I’ll be giving away four books after today to commenters who've visited during this weekend! Some of mine--some of my favorites from the authors in this weekend's blogs. Thanks so much for celebrating my birthday weekend with me!!
Check out my two most recent releases!

Sunflower
by Jill Marie Landis

Analisa, a strong, independent immigrant from Holland, is a woman with a tragic background who stumbles upon a half-dead stranger on the doorstep of her sod house on the Iowa prairie.

Caleb Storm is a man whose mixed heritage challenges every feeling in her battered heart. And yet, their love is as inevitable as the sunrise—as powerful as the prairie winds.

EXCERPT
It was gentle that first kiss, as gentle as water in the creek sliding over smooth stones. Caleb’s lips touched Analisa’s for a moment and then drew away, only to return a heartbeat later and linger this time. She let his lips capture hers without returning the kiss as yet, merely savoring the close contact. As this sweet kiss ended, he wrapped his arms around her, pressing his palms into her shoulder blades, enfolding her against the hard wall of his chest.

“I want you, Analisa,” he whispered.

And suddenly she knew it was not a dream. . .

Get Lost in a romance from Jill Marie Landis

With her first novel, SUNFLOWER, Jill Marie Landis won the Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart and the Golden Medallion Award for Best Historical Romance, RWA’s precursor to the RITA. Her novels WILDFLOWER, ROSE and JADE, confirmed the promise of her unique talent for rich detail and characterization. COME SPRING, winner of the "Best Romance Novel of the Year" RITA award, was hailed by such celebrated authors as Julie Garwood and Linda Lael Miller, while PAST PROMISES earned the praises of Amanda Quick. UNTIL TOMORROW, AFTER ALL, LAST CHANCE, DAY DREAMER, JUST ONCE, BLUE MOON, GLASS BEACH and THE ORCHID HUNTER. Many of these titles are already available in eBook format and the rest will soon be re-published for a whole new generation of readers to enjoy.

She resides in Hawaii with her husband. When she's not writing or sitting on the beach reading, she enjoys visiting with family and friends, raising orchids, working in her garden, occasionally quilting, but most of all dancing the hula.

Some of her recent releases include two new historical romance novellas included in BE MY VALENTINE, the Irish Angels Series, inspirational historical romance from Zondervan, and MAI TAI ONE ON, TWO TO MANGO, and THREE TO GET LEI’D, the first three titles in her hilarious “Tiki Goddess Mysteries” set in Hawaii from Belle Books.

Q&A

E.E. Did you get lost in the writing of your first published novel?

JILL: I definitely got lost writing SUNFLOWER. I had finished an entire novel that received a lot of good rejections (yes, there are such things) and so I started SUNFLOWER, my second novel project. I started writing it in a fiction writers’ workshop held evenings at a local community college, before I’d ever heard of RWA. I had just quit teaching kindergarten full time and decided to pursue my dream of writing and selling a novel. I hadn’t thought past writing one book and certainly never planned on having such a wonderful career as a working writer.

To all those who aspire to write, here’s my advice: get to the end of your first book no matter what. I learned so much writing that first novel, even though it never saw the light of day. Back when I started, self-publishing was not what it has become today. Rejection was something we all came to know well and survived.

E.E. What led you to choose the historical romance genre?

JILL: Quite a few things started me on the path to writing historical romance. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in History and I love history and can get lost in research books. When I was teaching full time I started reading bags of paperback historicals. Talk about getting lost! Devouring the old “bodice rippers” (I know I’ll hear about that from somebody) is how I spent every minute of my spare time. The “greats” started writing back then. Some of my favorites were Kathleen Woodiwiss, Jude Deveraux, and Laurie McBain. If you haven’t read these authors or heard of their books you are really missing something. Run, do not walk, to look them up.

E.E. Have historical romances changed much since those classics were written?

JILL: Historical romances have evolved in many ways over the years but of course the books of today (forty years later in some cases) have the same elements. The classic romances are longer than today’s novels. The required word count had to be 150,000 instead of 100,000 or less, so the writing was denser and more textured. The heroes were definitely “Alpha” males and not a bit politically correct. They were mostly dark and tortured and brooding, and yet they were all eventually tamed by the heroines. Eventually.

GOTTA ASK: So which of these classic “old school” historicals were your very favorites and which would you recommend to readers who have never read them?

GOTTA ANSWER: Before I answer let me just say again, these books are not watered down or politically correct. They are raw and gritty and yet they aren’t what are considered erotica, either. My three favorites (though it’s hard to narrow them down) are “The Wolf and the Dove,” a medieval by Kathleen Woodiwiss. I’ve read that title over and over for years. I also re-read Woodiwiss’ “The Flame and the Flower” and “Shauna.” Jude Deveraux’s “The Black Lyon” is one I remember as a page-turner. Also Laurie McBain’s “Moonstruck Madness” and “Devil’s Desire.” If you love to get lost in a book, I’d definitely give these titles a try.
