Jessie
couldn’t bear Duel’s stricken look, to know that she’d caused it.
“Open
your eyes, darlin’.” His gentle tone could have tamed the wildest, meanest
maverick.
She
wiped her tears and braced herself. Yet strangely, the amber lights held
nothing frightening. What shone forth was something poets had expressed for
centuries in sonnets of love and adoration.
“I
feel unworthy of you.” This time a tremble appeared in his deep voice.
“You
still want me? After everything I’ve told you?” She prayed for a miracle.
“Jess,
you’re not an animal to be turned out or sold.” Duel kissed her tenderly.
“You’re
not disappointed? I know how much you want a son.”
“Darlin’,
I promised to stand by you in sickness and in health, for better or worse,
until death do us part. I didn’t vow to do all that just until I changed my
mind. Besides, what you told me only makes me love you more.”
Unless
her hearing had suddenly gone bad, he’d just declared his love for her. “You
love me?”
“Is
that so hard to believe? Of course, I love you.”
“But
Annie?”
“That
part of my life is over. I loved her once. That was then, this is now. You’re
my wife, and I’m damn proud for you to wear my name.” He peered at her sternly,
his gruff addition erasing all doubt. “One more thing. I wed you because I
wanted you, lady, not because I felt pity or that you needed a protector.”
“Thank
you.” The words came out no louder than a whisper. Her gratitude ran deep,
making the simple statement seem inadequate for the deep emotion she felt.
A little later, languid peace wound its way
through Jessie. Their lovemaking session had left her totally exhausted, but in
a good way.
Snoring softly beside her, his arms holding
her safe, Duel exhibited the same contentment. The harsh lines of his features
seemed softer, meshing with his sensitive inner spirit. He’d shown uncommon
compassion for her this night. Despite the driving urges she knew he battled,
he’d respected her fears and let her go at her own pace.
Overwhelmed by
his thoughtfulness, she caressed his cheek. How she loved this man, her knight
of the Texas Plains. His tender lovemaking made her feel like more than a
fairy-tale princess in a storybook.
The toasty flush inside made her feel the most beautiful woman in
the world.
Meet Linda
I'm
a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of full length historical
western romance novels and short stories. Watching TV westerns during my youth
fed my love of cowboys and the old West and they still do.
I reside in the
Texas Panhandle on land the American Indian and Comancheros once roamed and I
can feel their ghosts lurking around each corner. Texas is rich in history and
I often get lost when I go exploring it, looking for little known tidbits to
add realism to my stories. I might as well confess that quite often I make a
nuisance of myself at museums and libraries.

E.E. Who would you cast to play your characters in a movie version of your book?
Linda: Scott
Eastwood for Duel McClain. He’d be perfect with his steely gaze and handsome
profile. Scott just has “the look” of a man who’d have plenty of grit yet be
tender beneath that rough exterior. Jessie Foltry would have to be played by
Natalie Portman. She has this amazing strength wrapped in beauty.
E.E.: What book do you wish you “could’ve” written?
Linda: The
Outsider by Penelope Williamson. This book is amazing in how it portrays a
realistic view of frontier times and the various types of people who lived back
then. What I really admire most is how Williamson handled the character Johnny
Cain and the contrast of his violent past with the gentle Amish culture. And
her writing is just beautiful. That story is a classic and will stand the test
of time.
E.E.: If you had a superpower, what would it be?
Linda: Cloning.
Oh man, if I could clone myself that would be amazing! I would have one of me
do nothing but social media, one to run my errands, one to cook and clean, and
leave me to do nothing but write. That would be absolute heaven. Come on,
folks, make this a reality now!
E.E.: What is your most interesting quirk?
Linda: I
can’t start a book until I turn to the back and read the last page. I have this
compulsion to know how it ends and if the characters get their HEA. I’m really
impatient that way. Give me satisfied characters at the end and I’m all set to
dive into the story. Or maybe I’m just weird. I also can’t stand to have a
plastic shower curtain touch my bare legs.
E.E.: What three things would you take to a desert island?
Linda: Coffee
is a must! I wouldn’t last two days without a cup of the stuff.
A
good book. Again, two days with a book to read and I’m stir crazy.
Pen
and Paper. I’d have to have something to jot my story on and banana leaves
really wouldn’t do too well.
E.E.: What is the last great book you read and why
was it unforgettable?
Linda: Redeeming
Love by Francine Rivers is such a gripping historical romance about the power
of love. It’s about a woman who was sold to a pedophile at the age of eight and
introduced to a dark world from which there was no escape. And then Michael
Hosea entered her life and wouldn’t leave. I loved how Rivers showed that no
matter how bad your circumstances or what you’ve had to do to stay alive, God
loves you. With His help, you can rise above anything. This book was very
powerful.
E.E.: What do you have coming next?
Linda: I
have lots in the pipeline. For starters:
October
– Christmas in a Cowboy’s Arms anthology with Leigh Greenwood, Rosanne Bittner,
Margaret Brownley, Ana Schmidt, and Amy Sandas.
November
– To Love a Texas Outlaw – Book #3 Men of Legend
