Jillian: Is there a playlist you’d recommend for reading your latest release?
Brenna: If I were to pick one “theme song” from my playlist to exemplify the story I’d say it was “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak for obvious reasons.

I actually made a playlist of three songs mentioned in the novel and pinned it at pinterest (http://www.pinterest.com/pin/120752833732756078/) They are “Pleasure Little Treasure” by Depeche Mode, “Walk Away From Love” by Yaz, and “Keeps Getting Better” by Christina Aguilera.  On the playlist I created for inspiration, there are a lot more songs but those three were also included.

Jillian: Where do you read and how often?
Brenna: Every night. Mostly before I go to sleep but pretty much everywhere I can. I’m an eBook hoarder and very rarely read paper books nowadays!

Jillian: Describe your favorite kind of hero to read/write?
Brenna: Alpha heroes all the way! They are my favorite. But they can’t be “over the top.”  They have to be modern men who like smart, strong, independent women. But they also have to be men who know what they want, go after it and do not settle for anything less.  Adam is very much this type of hero.

Jillian: Be honest, when reading 1st person...do you miss the hero’s POV?
Brenna: Many New Adult Novels, though written in first person, do offer alternating points of view. For story-telling reasons, I made the choice to stick entirely with the heroine, Mia’s POV for this first novel in the series. The second novel will be in the hero’s POV.  I love sticking with one character throughout the duration of a story and experiencing the events through their eyes. I think the first person POV offers a lot of intimacy for the reader that isn’t readily available in third person.
Jillian: I agree! There is a kind of intimacy in first person than you don't quite get in third person. I love writing in first person for my contemporary romance novels.

Jillian: What do you do to unwind and relax?
Brenna: Mostly I love to read—all genres, but mostly romance, science fiction or fantasy. I geek out to online video games, watch nerdy movies or reruns of old TV shows like Firefly and Star Trek. Or go camping. I have wide and eclectic range of interests. 

Jillian: Which of your characters would you most/least like to invite to dinner, and why?
Brenna: Adam because he’d take me somewhere expensive and then pick up the bill. HAHA.  Actually, I think it would be more fun to dine with Mia’s best friend Heath because he’s so hilarious. I’d probably laugh the entire night.

I found Marco sitting on the outside steps leading to the lobby.  He hunched forward, his elbows on his thighs, a page of paper in one hand, an envelope in the other. Twilight wind ruffled his dark T-shirt and hair.

I couldn’t help smiling.  “I’m back to haunt you.”

He grinned back at me and patted the step beside him.  “My favorite neighbor.” 

I didn’t mean to sit so close to him, but I sort of accidentally brushed against his arm.  Imagine that.  I liked how it wasn’t very hairy, could easily imagine how his muscles would bunch while he paddled on his surfboard through the water, droplets sparkling over his skin, salt mingling with sand and sweat.

“So I saw you at The Field the other day.”

He went back to leaning his elbows on his thighs, closing himself off. “You should’ve said hey to me.”

“I didn’t want to bother you.”  I didn’t want you to think I was with my ex, or break in on you and your grandpa or... Who was that man, Marco?

For a second, I wasn’t sure he was going to elaborate, but then he said, “That was my real dad.”

Body language alert: His personal security reading had just shot up two notches to “Orange.”

“I see.” I was being so good, trying not to pry. There are certain things you just don’t ask: Marco, I saw how much you cared for the guy, so why do you seem so sad? Marco, does he have anything to do with your emotional deadlines or your inability to commit?

He stood—conversation over. “I wish you hadn’t seen me there.”

“I understand.  Say no more.”

He lifted a hand, palm upward.  “Listen, sis...”

“I’m not your sis.”

It was his turn to raise his eyebrows.  

      “That’s true,” he said.  “Makes things kind of tough because I’m not really sure what you are, Mandy…”

Jillian: What’s your favorite cartoon character?

Chris: Thanks to my young nephew, I have become enamored of TEEN TITANS GO! on the Cartoon Network. My favorite is Robin because he is a hilarious Type-A weirdo and has a full-throttle determination to be the best superhero he can be. Also, he’s the only Teen Titan not to have superpowers, so he has to try extra hard. <G> He’s followed closely by sarcastic, kick-butt Raven.

Jillian: What sound or noise do you love?

Chris: I love the sound of a lawnmower! This is no doubt because I associate the noise with the freshness of spring, and the lovely scent of cut grass comes along with it. Things feel lazy and cool when I hear a lawnmower.

Jillian: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

Chris: Well, I have an ever-evolving favorite 10 ten, but the original STAR WARS movies are always at the top. And, yes, I am considering STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, and RETURN OF THE JEDI to be one movie, LOL. Even if you locked me in a box and made me choose just one movie before you’d let me out, I wouldn’t be able to decide between STAR WARS and EMPIRE! (That’s because STAR WARS makes me so dang happy and EMPIRE plucks at my heartstrings. How can a girl choose?)

Jillian: Be honest, when reading 1st person...do you miss the hero’s POV?

Chris: When I pick up a first-person POV story, I’m so willing to be swallowed up exclusively by the heroine’s thoughts and emotions. I wrote THE SHE CODE in first-person, and it’s almost like sitting down with a good friend and hearing her tell an amusing story that (hopefully) makes you laugh while you feel all of her heartbreak firsthand. When I used first-person in my urban fantasy novelette for the KICKING IT anthology, I wanted to get the reader deep into the heroine’s head so we could really experience her confusion and isolation at waking up in a strange place and not knowing who the heck she is. So, in a word…no, I don’t always miss that hero’s POV. I know I can get a guy’s side in a different type of book.

Jillian: What do you do to unwind and relax?

Chris: I am a TV freak. I love to collapse on my comfy couch and watch everything from THE WALKING DEAD to SONS OF ANARCHY to TOP CHEF. I also love to walk and hike, although I can’t say I’m always relaxing during those activities, LOL. I get some great story ideas and fill plot holes then, so I’m also working.

Jillian: Which of your characters would you most/least like to invite to dinner, and why?

Chris: I think having a holiday meal with my Vampire Babylon heroine, Dawn Madison, would be the most interesting! Especially if she brought her monster hunting team with her. They’d have some great stories to tell (although we’d probably want to save the goriest ones until all the food has been served!). Also, Dawn and the team shut down all the vampire undergrounds a few years ago in London, and I love to reminisce with people who have traveled there, too. It’s a city that’s full of hauntings and I could chat for hours about it!

Mary Duncanson, who sometimes writes as Mary Malcolm, lives in North Texas with a menagerie of animals and roommates. She is currently looking to adopt a husband, preferably housebroken, preferably as silly as her. When she’s not on Facebook goofing around, she’s talking to the characters in her head and hoping they talk back. CLOVER: How often to you get lost in a story?

MARY: I don’t think I’m ever Not lost in a story. Even as I’m working on this I’m thinking about what’s coming next for Lucy in the Trouble series. I’m thinking about the three books I want to write to follow up on the Texas Millionaire’s series. I’ve got a series of young adult books I want to write...gah. So many words, so little time.

CLOVER: So you have more stories in your head then you have time to write them. Good for us, crazy brains for you. What has drawn you to write in the New Adult genre?

MARY: I think it has so much potential. I have a heck of a lot of nieces and nephews and I know that as they get older, they don’t always transition into adult books all that well. They go from loving Young Adult to pretty much not reading anything. So I see this as a stop-gap genre that will hopefully transition those readers into loving older books.

CLOVER: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

MARY: I don’t know if I have a favorite of all time, but I absolutely love Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. My favorite *OMG I can’t believe I’m telling anyone this* movies of all time are Young Guns II, and Little Shop of Horrors. Oh, and my favorite movie that I love OH SO MUCH, but rarely watch is Like Water for Chocolate.

CLOVER: What do you do to unwind and relax?

MARY: Reading, of course. Or cooking. I also love to crochet. And, another of course, playing with my animals. I’ve got three cutie pie dogs and an adorable and sweet cat. I love these little critters. *big heart*

CLOVER: What’s your favorite cartoon character?

MARY: I’m going for a duo with this one...Pinky and the Brain. It was such a brilliant show and I loved all of the inside jokes and watching as they tried in each episode...to take over the world. Muah ha ha ha ha!!!

CLOVER’S GOTTA ASK: Besides, uh, taking over the world, what dreams have been realized as a result of your writing?

MARY’S GOTTA ANSWER:   The biggest is that I’m able now to work as a full-time, stay-at-home author. I’ve wanted this since I was thirteen and to be able to live that dream is magical. I’ve lived in my head my entire life but didn’t think I’d get a chance to put what I love on paper, much less that people would want to read what I wrote. I’m exceptionally thankful that my readers have made this all possible for me.

MAUREEN: What’s your favorite holiday?

WYLIE: Does Halloween count?  I love the imagination of it! And the candy J

MAUREEN: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

WYLIE: I’m a huge movie buff, so narrowing down to just one,… tough. I’m going to go with Legends of the Fall. Great cast, amazing soundtrack, and it runs you through every emotion.

MAUREEN: Where do you most like to read and how often?

WYLIE: In the bathtub. It’s the only place my family won’t disturb me.

MAUREEN: What’s the first book you remember reading?

WYLIE: My first adult book (because going back further than age 13 would be impossible!) was Sidney Sheldon’s Rage of Angels. I was in 8^th Grade. My teacher asked to borrow it when I was done.

MAUREEN: Do you believe in ghosts?

WYLIE: I don’t not believe in ghosts. I don’t think I’ve met one yet, but I’m not ruling anything out.

MAUREEN: Do shapeshifters exist?

WYLIE: Yes. They are called children. They go from little horned devils to darling angels every day!

MAUREEN: Hiking boots or high heels?

WYLIE: They both hurt. I’m going with bedroom slippers.

MAUREEN: Would you rather sky dive or scuba dive?

WYLIE: Scuba dive! When I lived in Bermuda I spent a lot of time diving shipwrecks, wondering what and who they were carrying, knowing that every person on board had a story.

MAUREEN: Vanilla or chocolate?

WYLIE: Chocolate.

MAUREEN: What’s the most romantic thing anyone ever did for you?

WYLIE: When my husband and I were dating, he got takeout from a very exclusive restaurant (not the kind you take-out from!) and set up a romantic outdoor dinner in a private garden that overlooked Hamilton Harbour (Bermuda), which was full of tall ships and twinkling lights. I said yes ;)

MAUREEN: Which of your characters would you most/least to invite to dinner, and why?

WYLIE: I LOVE this question!! I would love to have dinner with Libra, the hero of my book, so I could pick his brain about the future. I’d least like to have Leon Trevayne, because he’d probably spray spittle all over the food during one of his rants.

MAUREEN: Tea or Coffee? And how do you take it?

WYLIE: Coffee – light and sweet. As for tea, I enjoy herbals. I’m on a lemon-ginger kick at the moment.

MAUREEN: What does it mean to love someone?

WYLIE: My measure of love… If I would throw myself into the path of an oncoming bus for someone. Is that really weird? LOL

MAUREEN: What color would you make the sky if it wasn’t going to be blue anymore and why?

WYLIE: I’d make the sky candle-light. Everyone looks better in candle light ;)

MAUREEN: What’s your idea of a perfect Sunday afternoon?

WYLIE: If it’s cold or raining… good book, fireplace, latte. If it’s sunny… beach, good book, mojito.

MAUREEN: How did you come up with the idea for your book’s post-apocalyptic future?

WYLIE: I had an idea for a post-apocalyptic Romeo and Juliet type of story but the world didn’t begin building in my head until a car-trip through Northern Ontario. The untamed beauty of the landscape literally took my breath away. Miles and miles of uninhabited land, a stunning palette of greens and dark blues, harsh rocky outcrops and lake after lake. Sixteen hours later, polite conversation exhausted, my husband and I began the ‘what would you do if’ game. It didn’t matter what the disaster -- zombie apocalypse, alien invasion, massive tsunami, Ebola outbreak -- we decided we’d survive up here, in the northern forests Ontario. And Jump Zone was born!
