A Very Merry Holiday...Alexa Style!

My family has always celebrated Christmas together and I was lucky enough to often get what presents I really wanted. Once I left Santa behind with the little girl I used to be, the list of presents grew shorter until I stopped giving gift ideas all together. As an adult, I've learned the point of the holidays is to spend time with those I love and any gift people share is like icing on my favorite cupcakes.

This year, though, I think I got the most humongous cupcake with gobs of frosting. Why? Next Friday, December 27th, my very first full-length romantic suspense book will be released!

LIAR, LIAR

Unable to protect her mother from her father as a child, Devin McQueen has made it her mission as an adult to protect as many abused women and children as she can. The rare moments she’s not consumed with work as a victims' advocate, she involves herself with safe, predictable men.

Everything is as good as it can be…until she meets bounty hunter Grady Cooper.  He is big, bold, brash, and has no problem speaking his mind.

Growing up in a broken home, Grady realizes early on that every good deed has a price.  To survive with as few scars as possible, he learns to weigh every decision by what he can gain.  But the successful, solitary life he’s worked so hard to create spins out of control when demons from his past shake his confidence.  His boss gives him one last chance—bring in Devin's latest client quickly and quietly and maybe he'll still have a job.

Suddenly, Grady must make the ultimate decision: follow his career or follow his heart?

Now if that wasn't awesome enough, guess what? Only 11 days later, on January 7th, my 2nd full-length romantic suspense book will be released!

DANCE AWAY, DANGER

Sensible dance instructor Tessa Gage likes her life organized, risk-free and on her own terms. When her cop brother goes missing, his crooked partner tries to kill her, and a handsome stranger claims he’s come to protect her, she’s forced to leave her comfort zone. With more dance and business sense than survival skills and no idea who to trust, Tessa has no choice but to rely on this man who’d rather be anywhere but by her side.

When carefree carpenter Matt Rylan gets a late night call from an Army buddy who once saved his life, he finds himself where he never again wanted to be—responsible for someone else. Honor demands Matt cooperate, but he never expects his simple babysitting job to test the limits of his self-control. Nor does he expect it to explode into a race against time for his very freedom.

As Tessa and Matt get closer to the truth, and to each other, Tessa learns to step outside the safety of her world to help set the wheels of justice in motion. For Matt, supporting this courageous woman suddenly becomes everything to him. Yet, his biggest challenge remains sharing his closed-off heart with her before the danger silences them both forever.

I've got lots of great plans for sharing lots more about each of these books in the next couple of months and I hope you'll join me. I'll be traveling on book tours, discussing how each book began, having contests (including The 2014 Danger Challenge and The Hunt for Justice) for cool swag and prizes. The details for each contest will soon be on my website. Plus, you have a chance to win one of three copies of DANCE AWAY, DANGER if you visit this page on Goodreads.

Okay, I'm off to find me some mulled wine. I'm starting my celebrating early...before I get back to edits on ANOTHER book due out soon! I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday!

Kristina McMorris, The Pieces We Keep

Welcome back Kristina McMorris!

Kristina McMorris’s works of fiction have garnered more than twenty national literary awards and appeared on the New York Times and USA Today bestsellers lists. Inspired by true personal and historical accounts, her novels include Letters from Home, Bridge of Scarlet Leaves, and most recently The Pieces We Keep.

ABOUT:  THE PIECES WE KEEP

A young boy’s violent, recurrent night terrors unseal a trove of family secrets tracing back to the Second World War, forever altering the lives of those around him.

In this richly emotional novel, Kristina McMorris evokes the depth of a mother’s bond with her child, and the power of personal histories to echo through generations…

Two years have done little to ease veterinarian Audra Hughes’s grief over her husband’s untimely death. Eager for a fresh start, Audra plans to leave Portland for a new job in Philadelphia. Her seven-year-old son, Jack, seems apprehensive about flying—but it’s just the beginning of an anxiety that grows to consume him.

As Jack’s fears continue to surface in recurring and violent nightmares, Audra hardly recognizes the introverted boy he has become. Desperate, she traces snippets of information unearthed in Jack’s dreams, leading her to Sean Malloy, a struggling US Army veteran wounded in Afghanistan. Together they unravel a mystery dating back to World War II, and uncover old family secrets that still have the strength to wound—and perhaps, at last, to heal.

Intricate and beautifully written, The Pieces We Keep illuminates those moments when life asks us to reach beyond what we know and embrace what was once unthinkable. Deftly weaving together past and present, herein lies a story that is at once poignant and thought provoking, and as unpredictable as the human heart.

“An utterly absorbing novel…this is a beautifully woven story, at once gripping and uplifting.” —Margaret Leroy, author of The Soldier’s Wife
“A compelling tale with memorable characters, written in McMorris’ elegant and captivating prose. I didn’t want this novel to end.” —Erika Robuck, bestselling author of Call Me Zelda
"A haunting read…it is a perfect combination of historical fiction and modern mystery." —Amy Hatvany, author of Heart Like Mine

BEHIND THE BOOK:

A friend once shared with a Kristina a news story about a young boy troubled by night terrors involving a plane crash during WWII. Eventually, his detailed knowledge convinced his skeptical parents that in a past life he had been a pilot who perished in battle.

Kristina's eldest son, often referred to as an "old soul," had also once suffered from night terrors and used to speak of a grandmother who didn't exist. Reflecting on this, Kristina wondered: how would she react if her son, too, suddenly spouted historical facts that logic dictated he couldn't yet know? What if those "memories" linked back to secrets people strove to keep buried?

From there, a true account of Nazi spies on American soil inspired the final threads of Kristina's story, raising challenging questions of courage, faith, and loyalty.

GET TO KNOW KRISTINA MCMORRIS

Maureen: What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done to research a book?
Kristina: I can easily say it was flying in a restored B-17 from WWII. After takeoff, the ten passengers were allowed to roam the aircraft at will, and I jumped at the opportunity to sit in the nose gunner’s seat, where there’s nothing but Plexiglas beneath your feet. Needless to say, it was an unforgettable experience!

Maureen: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
Kristina: As a movie buff, I have a lot of favorites. But if I had to name just one, I’d say Dangerous Beauty, an incredible story set in the Venetian courtesan era. I’m always amazed it’s not a more widely known film.

Maureen: What’s your favorite kind of story to get lost in?
Kristina: Historical fiction, without a doubt. Nothing pulls me into another world like a period piece with high stakes—typically involving war, love, tragedy, and hope.

Maureen: What’s the first book you remember reading?
Kristina: Hmm, I think that might have to be Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Seriously, who doesn’t remember reciting the bust chant at some point?

Maureen: Do you believe in ghosts?
Kristina: I do. Mainly because, when I was a little girl, our family home was haunted for a brief time, even requiring the help of a pastor who blessed the house, room by room.

Maureen: What sound or noise do you love?
Kristina: The heartwarming sound of my sons giggling while playing together.

Maureen: What book would you want with you if you were stranded on a desert island?
Kristina: The most comprehensive survival guide in existence. For pure pleasure reading? The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. It’s the only novel I’ve ever wanted to immediately start rereading the minute I finished it.

Maureen: What’s your favorite dessert?
Kristina: Tiramisu. My husband and I are on a perpetual hunt to find the best tiramisu in the world.

Maureen: Tea or Coffee? And how do you take it?
Kristina: I’m from Oregon, so of course it’s coffee! And of course it’s as complicated as a chemistry experiment: a half-caff, tepid, nonfat vanilla latte with an extra pump of caramel. Now, say THAT ten times fast!

Maureen: What’s your favorite kid joke?
Kristina: Why did the football coach go to the bank? To get his quarterback.
Maureen: **rolling on the floor laughing**

Every girl should know the rules...

Mandy Halsey is fresh out of college and determined to go from being a receptionist at the assembly line comic book house where she works to being a real-live penciler by the end of the year. That’s the plan, anyway.

But life isn’t cooperating. First, her job feels like a dead end. Second, her personal life isn’t exactly on fire, either, especially since her best friend seems to be moving in on every guy who catches Mandy’s eye. Is it just Mandy’s imagination or has Sheila totally changed since graduation, becoming someone who’s almost a stranger?

No way, because the BFFs grew up with The She Code. See, girls have rules with each other, so surely the friend Mandy grew up with wouldn’t ever break the Code—and break Mandy’s heart at the same time...

THE SHE CODE, a new adult/chick lit/geek lit hybrid, is all about the bright side of angst—because there definitely is one! Featuring sketches and comic panels by Billy Martinez of Neko Press Comics.

Yay! An Excerpt:

I found Marco sitting on the outside steps leading to the lobby.  He hunched forward, his elbows on his thighs, a page of paper in one hand, an envelope in the other. Twilight wind ruffled his dark T-shirt and hair.
I couldn’t help smiling.  “I’m back to haunt you.”
He grinned back at me and patted the step beside him.  “My favorite neighbor.”
I didn’t mean to sit so close to him, but I sort of accidentally brushed against his arm.  Imagine that.  I liked how it wasn’t very hairy, could easily imagine how his muscles would bunch while he paddled on his surfboard through the water, droplets sparkling over his skin, salt mingling with sand and sweat.
“So I saw you at The Field the other day.”
He went back to leaning his elbows on his thighs, closing himself off. “You should’ve said hey to me.”
“I didn’t want to bother you.”  I didn’t want you to think I was with my ex, or break in on you and your grandpa or... Who was that man, Marco?
For a second, I wasn’t sure he was going to elaborate, but then he said, “That was my real dad.”
Body language alert: His personal security reading had just shot up two notches to “Orange.”
“I see.” I was being so good, trying not to pry. There are certain things you just don’t ask: Marco, I saw how much you cared for the guy, so why do you seem so sad? Marco, does he have anything to do with your emotional deadlines or your inability to commit?
He stood—conversation over. “I wish you hadn’t seen me there.”
“I understand.  Say no more.”
He lifted a hand, palm upward.  “Listen, sis...”
“I’m not your sis.”
It was his turn to raise his eyebrows.
“That’s true,” he said.  “Makes things kind of tough because I’m not really sure what you are, Mandy…”

Chris Marie Green is the author of the upcoming Ghost for Hire series (Feb. 2014, Only the Good Die Young), which features a fun-loving spirit from the 80s. She also wrote the urban fantasy Vampire Babylon series (including RAISING THE DARKNESS and IN BAD SPIRITS) and the New Adult/Chick Lit THE SHE CODE. Under her “Crystal Green” pen name, she writes romances, including the Rough & Tumble series, which will debut with the Berkley Intermix line in 2014.

Chris tries her best to avoid international incidents whenever she takes a break from her first love, writing, and cheats on it with her other true love—traveling!

Jillian: What’s your favorite cartoon character?
Chris: Thanks to my young nephew, I have become enamored of TEEN TITANS GO! on the Cartoon Network. My favorite is Robin because he is a hilarious Type-A weirdo and has a full-throttle determination to be the best superhero he can be. Also, he’s the only Teen Titan not to have superpowers, so he has to try extra hard. <G> He’s followed closely by sarcastic, kick-butt Raven.

Jillian: What sound or noise do you love?
Chris: I love the sound of a lawnmower! This is no doubt because I associate the noise with the freshness of spring, and the lovely scent of cut grass comes along with it. Things feel lazy and cool when I hear a lawnmower.

Jillian: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
Chris: Well, I have an ever-evolving favorite 10 ten, but the original STAR WARS movies are always at the top. And, yes, I am considering STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, and RETURN OF THE JEDI to be one movie, LOL. Even if you locked me in a box and made me choose just one movie before you’d let me out, I wouldn’t be able to decide between STAR WARS and EMPIRE! (That’s because STAR WARS makes me so dang happy and EMPIRE plucks at my heartstrings. How can a girl choose?)

Jillian: Be honest, when reading 1st person...do you miss the hero’s POV?
Chris: When I pick up a first-person POV story, I’m so willing to be swallowed up exclusively by the heroine’s thoughts and emotions. I wrote THE SHE CODE in first-person, and it’s almost like sitting down with a good friend and hearing her tell an amusing story that (hopefully) makes you laugh while you feel all of her heartbreak firsthand. When I used first-person in my urban fantasy novelette for the KICKING IT anthology, I wanted to get the reader deep into the heroine’s head so we could really experience her confusion and isolation at waking up in a strange place and not knowing who the heck she is. So, in a word…no, I don’t always miss that hero’s POV. I know I can get a guy’s side in a different type of book.

Jillian: What do you do to unwind and relax?
Chris: I am a TV freak. I love to collapse on my comfy couch and watch everything from THE WALKING DEAD to SONS OF ANARCHY to TOP CHEF. I also love to walk and hike, although I can’t say I’m always relaxing during those activities, LOL. I get some great story ideas and fill plot holes then, so I’m also working.

Jillian: Which of your characters would you most/least like to invite to dinner, and why?
Chris: I think having a holiday meal with my Vampire Babylon heroine, Dawn Madison, would be the most interesting! Especially if she brought her monster hunting team with her. They’d have some great stories to tell (although we’d probably want to save the goriest ones until all the food has been served!). Also, Dawn and the team shut down all the vampire undergrounds a few years ago in London, and I love to reminisce with people who have traveled there, too. It’s a city that’s full of hauntings and I could chat for hours about it!

Chris has a question for commenters: Who is your favorite comic book hero or heroine? Why?

Giveaway prize: a signed copy of the first Vampire Babylon book, NIGHT RISING to a commenter chosen by randomizer. Remember to leave your email contact information with your comment if you wish to be entered in the raffle.

Read an excerpt on Jessica's website

Meet Jessica!

Jessica’s earlier career was a haphazard one, including stints as foreign newsdesk secretary in London, cook on an Australian outback cattle station, TEFL teacher in Jakarta and interpreter on expedition in Cameroon.  She first stumbled into writing as a way of funding a Ph.D. in Medieval Studies, and since then she has written 60 books for Harlequin Mills & Boon.  A RITA®  finalist in 2013 and 2009 and winner in 2005,  Jessica is also a past winner and multiple finalist for  the UK’s coveted Romance Prize (now the RoNA Rose Award).  Jessica was awarded the National Readers’ Choice Award (Traditional category) for her 50th book, Last-Minute Proposal, in 2009 and again in 2010 for Cinderella’s Wedding Wish.

Jessica lives in York, and also writes ‘time slip’ novels under her real name, Pamela Hartshorne.

Let's get to the good stuff!

Lara: How often to you get lost in a story?
JESSICA: When I’m reading, every day!  When I’m writing … well, sometimes it can be a slog, and sometimes there’s a moment of magic when the story becomes real and the characters take over and suck me into their world.  That’s when I know the book is going to work, and it’s the best feeling!

Lara: What is your biggest vice?
JESSICA:  Impatience

Lara: Be honest, when reading...do you put yourself in the heroine’s role?
JESSICA: Is this something I should be ashamed about??  I do this all the time!  If I can’t identify with the heroine, I can’t get into a story.  [Lara: No need to be ashamed--I feel the same way!]

Lara: How did you come up with the idea for the books in your vintage collection?
JESSICA: After two false starts, I finally had the bright idea of reading a book on how to
Jessica's childhood home
write romance, and I remember it advised me to write about what I knew.  So I did.  The Vintage Collection features five of my earliest books, including my first three, and the settings are all based on my own experiences.  The very first, A Sweeter Prejudice, is set in an English village like the one I grew up in, The Trouble with Love has an African setting and used all sorts of incidents from my time on expedition there, and I once spent three months as a cook on an outback cattle station in Australia which was the inspiration for Woman at Willagong Creek.  I still like to write about settings I know well, and re-reading the books in my Vintage Collection was a real trip down memory lane for me!

Lara: What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing?
JESSICA: Writing enabled me to fund and complete my PhD.

Lara: What do you do to unwind and relax?
JESSICA: Walking and cooking are favourite activities of mine, but to be honest the best way I’ve found to relax is to have a good chat with a friend over a bottle of wine.

Lara: What sound or noise do you love?
JESSICA:  The whirr of insects on a tropical night.

Lara: What will always make you smile, even on a bad day?
JESSICA: A dog, wagging its tail. [Lara: That makes me smile just thinking about it!]

Lara’s GOTTA ASK: What are the next five books on your ‘to be read’ pile?
Jessica’s GOTTA ANSWER:   Make My Wish Come True by Fiona Harper; The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley; The Perfect Match by Kristin Higgins; The Autumn Bride by Anne Gracie; The Nightingale Sisters by Donna Douglas.

Where can you find Jessica?

Get in Trouble with Mary Duncanson

It's hard not to answer when trouble comes knocking

A girl who can’t forget…

Twenty-two-year-old Lucy Carver is like Sherlock Holmes in ballet flats, but her eidetic memory is more albatross than asset, and something she usually keeps hidden. When she notices that something’s amiss at her dead-end job, she jumps at the chance to finally use her ability for good. That is, until, a man is murdered, and she becomes the target of the killer.

A detective on his first case…

Detective Eli Reyes is overbearing, pompous, way too hot for Lucy’s own good, and seems as determined to ruin her relationship with her boyfriend, John, as finding the murderer. He brings Lucy in on the case, thinking she can help him get to the truth, only to cut her loose when he realizes he’s gotten far more than he ever bargained for.

A past that won’t go away…

When memories from her childhood invade her present, Lucy discovers a mystery bigger than she could have imagined. With the killer still after her, and Eli nowhere to be found, she takes things into her own hands, determined to expose the truth no matter what—before trouble comes knocking…again.

Mary Duncanson, who sometimes writes as Mary Malcolm, lives in North Texas with a menagerie of animals and roommates. She is currently looking to adopt a husband, preferably housebroken, preferably as silly as her. When she’s not on Facebook goofing around, she’s talking to the characters in her head and hoping they talk back. When she’s not doing all that, she can be found wandering around Central Market with a happy, drooly foodie look on her face. Do not judge her, it is her Mecca.

Mary’s been writing since she was a teenager, though she spent quite a few years studying toward becoming a doctor before she realized she wanted to be a full-time author. Unfortunately, the people who own her student loans still want to be paid for the years they supported her medical dreams.

She lives on a steady diet of coffee and chocolate and feels, like Eleanor Roosevelt, that people should believe in the beauty of their dreams. Also, that people should ignore the word “should” because really, it’s kind of a judgmental word. Mary dreams of one day living as a full-time, well-paid novelist (hint, hint) and also of traveling to Chile to pay homage to her soul mate, Pablo Neruda.

CLOVER: How often to you get lost in a story?
MARY: I don’t think I’m ever Not lost in a story. Even as I’m working on this I’m thinking about what’s coming next for Lucy in the Trouble series. I’m thinking about the three books I want to write to follow up on the Texas Millionaire’s series. I’ve got a series of young adult books I want to write...gah. So many words, so little time.

CLOVER: So you have more stories in your head then you have time to write them. Good for us, crazy brains for you. What has drawn you to write in the New Adult genre?
MARY: I think it has so much potential. I have a heck of a lot of nieces and nephews and I know that as they get older, they don’t always transition into adult books all that well. They go from loving Young Adult to pretty much not reading anything. So I see this as a stop-gap genre that will hopefully transition those readers into loving older books.

CLOVER: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
MARY: I don’t know if I have a favorite of all time, but I absolutely love Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. My favorite *OMG I can’t believe I’m telling anyone this* movies of all time are Young Guns II, and Little Shop of Horrors. Oh, and my favorite movie that I love OH SO MUCH, but rarely watch is Like Water for Chocolate.

CLOVER: What do you do to unwind and relax?
MARY: Reading, of course. Or cooking. I also love to crochet. And, another of course, playing with my animals. I’ve got three cutie pie dogs and an adorable and sweet cat. I love these little critters. *big heart*

CLOVER: What’s your favorite cartoon character?

MARY: I’m going for a duo with this one...Pinky and the Brain. It was such a brilliant show and I loved all of the inside jokes and watching as they tried in each episode...to take over the world. Muah ha ha ha ha!!!

CLOVER’S GOTTA ASK: Besides, uh, taking over the world, what dreams have been realized as a result of your writing?
MARY’S GOTTA ANSWER:   The biggest is that I’m able now to work as a full-time, stay-at-home author. I’ve wanted this since I was thirteen and to be able to live that dream is magical. I’ve lived in my head my entire life but didn’t think I’d get a chance to put what I love on paper, much less that people would want to read what I wrote. I’m exceptionally thankful that my readers have made this all possible for me.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SPENDING TIME WITH US TODAY. BUT BEFORE YOU GO, TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE COMING UP NEXT.
MARY: Next is UNSPOKEN TROUBLE due out in early(ish) 2014. After that, BURNING TROUBLE in late 2014 and the follow up Texas Millionaire’s book in early 2015.
THANK YOU. I LOVED BEING HERE. NOW I HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE GLIAS READERS. IF MONEY WASN'T AN ISSUE, WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU’D WANT TO BE?

Mary is offering a $10 Amazon Gift Card to one lucky commenter. (North America only)

The Story Behind the Story

THE MARINE'S
LAST DEFENSE

TO THE REST OF THE WORLD, SABRINA WATKINS DOESN'T EXIST. BUT TO THIS COP, SHE IS VERY MUCH ALIVE.

After escaping a killer, playing dead was the only way Sabrina Watkins could get out of Amarillo alive. Now she's living in Dallas, where no one knows her true identity. Until homicide cop Jake Craig shows up.

A half-frozen pup he finds at a crime scene brings Jake to Sabrina's doorstep. Suddenly, the former Marine is playing hero to a desperate woman on the run. Sworn to clear her name, Jake's already falling for the stunning brunette with the amethyst eyes. Can he keep her safe and turn a rescue mission into a last chance at love?

 ~ ~ ~
The Marine's Last Defense is a special book to me.  When Harlequin Intrigue had to push my TWIN books from January to May...we realized I'd go a year without a book release, so they offered me the January slot. I had to write a quick proposal and it needed to include a blizzard. I already had the concept for a murder and the location while bike riding with my husband. I just needed a plot.

The news came when we were on vacation. While chatting about possibilities (yes, sometimes my husband helps), we received a call from our dog sitter. Tim mentioned that would be a good way to hide...moving from house to house, not paying bills, etc. And just that fast I had a story.

From the get-go, I was including a black Labrador pup. I found out a couple of years ago that black animals make up 70% of all animals that have to be destroyed. I would definitely be putting a combination of my two black Labs (Dallas & Texas) into the pup I called Bear. I sold the book in January and began writing it in February. It was coming together nicely and then...

On February 13th, ten minutes before I arrived home, Dallas had a seizure resulting in a stroke and died. I was devestated. Dallas and I were very close. She was a fearless, loving dog. Abandoned on the side of the road, her rescuers thought she'd been tossed from a car. She had skin problems--didn't matter. She was blind in one eye--didn't slow her down. And she had unexplained seizures--we thought they were under control with medicine. I've loved all my dogs, but her death was so unexpected. It just hit me hard.
Even though the murder was in Dallas. I renamed the pup from Bear to Dallas in her honor. The mannerisms are all hers. I share pictures of my Labs all the time. All my on-line friends mourned Dallas. What most don't know is that we immediately adopted another 2 month-old black Lab we named Valentine. Unfortunately, she left the shelter with distemper and she was only with us 2 weeks. So I'd lost two precious pups in two weeks.

At first it was hard to write, but the book was written in a record number of days for me. I'm glad to share how Dallas became so special to my hero, Jake. And how she became his "last defense." I will never forget Dallas or precious little Valentine. And just to let you know, Tex is now 2 years old and his new playmate, Roxie, turned 1 last Monday.

"Former Marine Jake Craig is now a homicide detective who keeps people at a distance, but there's something about the pretty woman at the local coffee shop that captures his attention. Sabrina Watkins has built t a successful business walking dogs, but she's also on the run from men who want her to take the fall for their illegal activities-after she's dead. How can she get involved with a taciturn cop who could slap the cuffs any minute? Before he knows it, Jake is busy trying to keep Sabrina alive as he worries that he's falling hard for a felon. Morgan launches the volley from the first pages so readers aren't left wondering whodunit, but they'll have to pay attention to the escalating action to keep up with the characters, who are in trouble from the get-go." ~Romantic Times Magazine, 4 STARS
