GET LOST IN HIGHLANDER'S CURSE...

The magic of one woman’s love could save or destroy him.

When Colin MacAlister is cursed by the Faerie Queen and ends up in the bed of a twenty-first century woman — who also happens to be the most beautiful creature he’s ever laid eyes on — he’s torn between anger and lust. Colin is determined to see Scotland free of English control and must return to the fourteenth century, yet he cannot forget the woman who haunts his dreams and stirs him with scorching desire.

Abigail Porter can’t believe her luck. After making a wish to find her Soulmate, she wakes up to find a gorgeous man in her bed! Can he really be a medieval Highlander summoned by her Faerie Magic, however? It seems crazy, but when Abby discovers someone wants to enslave her because of her Faerie heritage, she agrees to flee with Colin to 1306 Scotland to avoid capture.

Thwarting danger at every turn, Abby and Colin surrender to an irresistible passion. But is the magic of true love powerful enough to save them?

Melissa, thank you for joining us today. Congratulations on your RITA nomination! I've been a fan of your writing for years, and before you leave us today, I hope you'll share your recipe for Million Dollar fudge. But I'll get to that later. Without further ado, let's ask the Get Lost in a Story fun questions: :)

DONNELL:
If you could live anywhere on earth, where would it be?

MELISSA: I’m amazingly lucky because I already live where I want to! Of all the placed I’ve lived or traveled to, Colorado has been my favorite. Now, in a perfect world, I’d also get to spend at least two months out of every year in Scotland!!

DONNELL: What is your favorite room in your house?

MELISSA: My living room. Lots of big windows to let the sun in and a wonderful fireplace for those cold days. And best of all? A corner of my sofa that is just perfect for curling up with either my laptop to write or a good book to read!

DONNELL: Introvert or Extrovert?

MELISSA: Introvert. Definitely.

DONNELL: Which of your characters would you most/least to invite to dinner, and why?

MELISSA: Most like to invite to dinner – that’s a tie between Rosalyn MacKiernan MacAlister, a woman who knows much more than she ever tells, and a brand new character, Elesyria Al Byrn, a Faerie who knows much more than she ever tells… or at least she thinks she does.

Least like to invite to dinner – Reynard Servans. That’s one scary Faerie.

DONNELL: Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?

MELISSA: I do read reviews and I do pay attention to them, though I do my best not to let them influence my writing. I respect every reader’s right to share an opinion of what they’ve read, even if I don’t necessarily agree with them all.

DONNELL: What’s in your refrigerator right now?

MELISSA: So much stuff!!! It really needs a good cleaning… and that’s on my list of things to do just as soon as this book is finished! J Newest, favorite thing in the fridge right now: a gallon of Sweet Tea picked up fresh this afternoon from Chick-fil-a.

DONNELL: Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

MELISSA: It happens to all writers on occasion, I believe. Some type of change usually helps me. A long, quiet ride in the car usually works to unblock the dam -- especially if I don’t have any paper to write ideas down on! Another trick I use is to go someplace different, like Starbucks, for instance. And using a pad of paper and a pen instead of a keyboard can make a difference sometimes, too.

DONNELL: Favorite tradition from childhood.

MELISSA: Making Million-Dollar fudge at Christmas. In fact, pretty much everything about Christmas.

DONNELL: What’s the first thing that you do when you finish a book?

MELISSA: Check to see how long I have to wait for the next one after that.

DONNELL: Coffee or Tea?

MELISSA: First thing in the morning it has to be coffee [with hazelnut creamer]. Mid-morning or afternoon it’s tea.

DONNELL: E-Reader or bound Book?

MELISSA: Bound book. Though I have an E-Reader and I’m slowly accumulating a wealth of research books on it and enjoy using it, I still reach for a bound book when I sit down to read. At least for now.

DONNELL: What dreams have you realized as a result of your writing?

MELISSA: Seeing a book with my name on it on the shelf at my local grocery store!!! That was a big one for me. More recently, getting that early morning call to tell me A HIGHLANDER’S HOMECOMING is a RITA finalist.

MELISSA'S GOTTA ASK QUESTION: My turn! Since I write time travel, it only makes sense for me to ask readers… if the Fae offered, when and where would you want to travel in time? Why is that your choice? And, most important… how long would you want to stay there?

~~~~READERS, TODAY'S COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS WILL ENTER YOU IN A DRAWING TO RECEIVE A SIGNED COPY OF HIGHLANDER'S CURSE BY MELISSA MAYHUE...SO COME ON DOWN~~~~
MELISSA MAYHUE began her writing career in 2005 after a vacation to Scotland and a hike on the Black Isle inspired her with the perfect setting for the characters running around in her head. Her resulting debut novel, THIRTY NIGHTS WITH A HIGHLAND HUSBAND, won the Holt Medallion and Book Buyers Best awards in 2008 and made the finals of the Colorado Book Awards.
Since then, her imaginary world of Faeries and Mortals has continued to grow. A HIGHLANDER’S HOMECOMING, sixth book in her award-winning Daughters of the Glen series from Pocket Books, is a 2011 RITA finalist in the Paranormal Category.
  1. If the fae offered to take me anywhere I would like to go back to the early 1800's in England and Scotland. I would not want to stay for more than a few days (3-5) because of the lack of modern plumbing, LOL.
    I have not read any of this series yet but would love to. I love historical romances, especially those set in Scotland. And I love paranormal aspects in books.
  2. Wherever the Fae would send me? Regency London. But only for a night, I love my creature comforts too much. I'd go to a ducal ball to meet the handsome Duke (they're all handsome aren't they), then we'd slip out of the party to go to a Demi-Monde entertainment, from there we'd go visit a Gaming Hell, and finally we'd end the evening in an intimate, romantic . . . Well, I just leave the rest to your imagination.
    I'm currently reading Healing the Highlander and loving it. Congrats on your Rita final
  3. I sooooooooooooo LOVE interviews by the LOST Authors! They are so indepth, and ask some really cool questions! Not textbook at all! Kudos to all the LOST Authors/interviewers!!!
    It's totally cool to getting to know our favorite authors!!!
    To answer your question, If the fae could take me back in time where would I want to go? hmmm, well to Scotland of course and probably during the times of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace!
    But I think I might only want to be there for a week or less! lol, I like the comforts of home way too much....
    But if I met a HOT warrior who would give life and limb for me, and let me live in luxury in his castle, well I might be persuaded to stay longer!! ha ha!!
    I'm a huge fan of yours Melissa and can't wait to read this!! and if its OK with you I would love to put your cover on my blog!
    CONGRATULATIONS finaling for the RITA!!!
    Keeping my fingers crossed that you WIN!!!
    Wishing you all the best,
    Andrea
  6. I would love to visit Europe in the Late Middle Ages, but only for a short period of time... and then after a few days at home it would be great to get back for a day or two and so on - but I wouldn't want to give up modern comforts :)
    wish you all the best, Melanie
  7. Melissa, I'm so excited you've joined us. Wow what a tough question. I think your final question... how long would we want to stay there is the hardest. We have no clue what hardships these people faced ;) I'd say... two weeks tops.
    And as a Boston Terrier lover myself, I knew we were kindred spirits. Thanks for joining us today on Get Lost in a Story and best wishes on the success of Highlander's Curse!
  8. I'd ask for a revolving door, so I could come back at any time and get a chocolate/pepsi fix.
    And I'd come back to try and stop Culloden and ensure the world appreciated a man in a kilt. Maybe that's all men would be able to wear now...
    Cold water. Need some. Now.
    Great post.
  9. Congrats on finaling and good luck in the Rita!
    So many choices. Early Scotland with the sexy Duke at his country house for a couple of days stirs the blood.
    But then my thoughts move forward to the end of World War II and the pictures of the military man kissing his bride for the first time in years. To have witnessed or participated in such a celebration would've been awesome.
    I'd want to return to today and my home in Texas, so the revolving door idea works for me!
  10. Sounds like a great title for a short story time travel; The Revolving Door.
  11. ooooo, Lesli, I LOVE the revolving door idea. There are SO many spots at so many times I'd like to peek in on!
    By the way, Donnell, though I don't [yet] have the Fudge recipe on my website [I'll make an effort to get that up before the end of May] I DO have a killer Pecan Pie [passed down through the family] recipe. You can find it here: http://www.melissamayhue.com/recipes.html
  12. Hi, Melissa. Love your books and can't wait to read Highlander's Curse. I'd want to go back to early 1800's in Colorado in the Boulder-Denver area to see how it was before freeways, pollution, high rises. I'd want to see the pristine beauty of the Rocky Mountains and the plains. But with my luck I'd probably materialize in the middle of a buffalo stampede or an Indian camp. How long would I stay? Either only until I got hungry, or if I could find something I could eat, only until I needed a shower. Of course, I'm afraid I'd come back terribly disappointed in what humans have done to this incredibly beautiful area. Good luck with the Rita.
  13. Melissa - I enjoyed your talk at HODRW last weekend. If I go back in time, I think I would choose the 1905 or 1906 and I would visit the east coast for one month in August. Why? Well, to watch major league baseball. I'd love to sit in the stands and watch Ty Cobb bat or on the bases or Christy Matthewson pitch. Yeah, I know that's pretty weird...
  14. Hi Melissa! Thanks for visiting GLIAS :) I loved your interview and your book sounds amazing!
    How lovely that you live in your favorite place. What a blessing. While I'm happy where I'm planted, I've yet to find that one place that makes my heart sing. There are so many fantastic places in the world. I think, once the kids are grown, I'm just going to have to go live a couple of months here and there until I find it...sounds like a plan!
    Ooh...and if I use your time traveling Fae, maybe I can find the right place AND time for me :)
  15. Huge congratulations on the RITA nomination, Melissa!!! I think I'd like a peek at the future if I had my choice. Far enough ahead so that everyone I know now would be gone, though. I wouldn't want to find out who dies when. Yikes.
  16. Melissa -
    Congratulations again on the RITA! If I got a chance to talk to the Far I definately would ask them to take me back in time to Scotland. My husband and I had a great vacation there but to be able to travel back and experience what it was really like is a fantasy of mine. My father told us that the family left from Glascow to come to the USA and we are still searching for all the connections. We somehow are related to the Loucks of Aberdeen but we are still searching for the link.
    Glad that you are on this blog but go back to work and finish that next book!
  17. I'd like to go back to the Queen Victorian era and live over there - Scotland probably because to me, that is women first started really getting rights and appreciated. I just love her and all that she did for the advancement of human rights.
  18. HI Melissa!
    If the Fae offered, I might dare ask for a trip to...Narnia or Wonderland or Hogwarts or Neverland or the Wonka Chocolate Factory or...
    Congrats on the RITA nomination!
  19. I would want to go to Victorian England, so I could wear the pretty dresses and dance with a handsome, rich duke. I would want to stay until midnight, a la Cinderella :-)
  20. Melissa, thanks for being with us today. Okay, cruel and unusual pecan pie and Million Dollar Fudge. I look forward to seeing those recipes on your web page. Good luck in New York this summer!
  21. Thanks, Donnell. And thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hello today! I so much appreciate your support and kind words about the RITA. And I love your ideas and all the places you'd like to see. Rebecca's wish for the return to the days of early baseball had such a ring of nostalgia, it put me in a Field of Dreams kind of mood! It really makes you think, doesn't it? I look forward to hearing from Donnell as to who will be getting a copy of HIGHLANDER'S CURSE and until then, I wish everyone Happy Reading!!!
  22. Donnell does a great interview and you held you own, Melissa! This book is sounding like one I need!
  23. I would love to travel back and been aboard the Titanic before it sank. I've always had such a strong fascination with the ship and I think I've seen almost every documentary there has been on it.
