MEET SUSAN M. BOYER
Susan has been making up stories her whole life. She tags along with her husband on business trips whenever she can because hotels are great places to write: fresh coffee all day and cookies at 4 p.m. They have a home in Greenville, SC, which they occasionally visit. Susan’s short fiction has appeared in moonShine Review, Spinetingler Magazine, Relief Journal, The Petigru Review, and Catfish Stew.

2012 Daphne du Maurier finalist

Private Investigator Liz Talbot is a modern Southern belle: she blesses hearts and takes names. She carries her Sig 9 in her Kate Spade handbag, and her golden retriever, Rhett, rides shotgun in her hybrid Escape. When her grandmother is murdered, Liz high-tails it back to her South Carolina island home to find the killer. She’s fit to be tied when her police-chief brother shuts her out of the investigation, so she opens her own. Then her long-dead best friend pops in and things really get complicated. When more folks start turning up dead in this small seaside town, Liz must use more than just her wits and charm to keep her family safe, chase down clues from the hereafter, and catch a psychopath before he catches her.

CURIOUS ABOUT SUSAN?
ANGI: How often do you get lost in a story?
SUSAN: Oh my goodness! Nearly every time I read a book. If I don’t get lost in the story, I put it down and pick up another—but this almost never happens.

ANGI: What’s the first book you remember reading?
SUSAN: The Wizard of Oz. I was so fascinated by that story that I read it many times and watched the movie every year. But I have to say, it gave me a lifelong, gut-wrenching fear of tornadoes.
ANGI: What’s your favorite fairy tale?
SUSAN: That would have to be Cinderella. I love that her prince went to such great lengths to find her. And of course the ending was very satisfying. I just love a happily ever after.

ANGI: Is there a playlist you’d recommend for reading your latest release?
SUSAN: The same one I used to write it—ocean surf on an endless loop.

ANGI: Where do you read and how often?
SUSAN: I read nearly every night after I’ve gone to bed, when the house is quiet. Unfortunately, I so often get lost in the story that I stay up far too late.

ANGI: What sound or noise do you love?
SUSAN: Rain. I love the sound of rain, especially on a tin roof.

ANGI: What was the first story you remember writing?
SUSAN: In fourth grade, I wrote a story about a girl who went west with her family on a wagon train.

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
SUSAN: Sweet Home Alabama. I rarely watch a movie more than once, but I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen this one.

ANGI: What is your biggest vice?
SUSAN: Oh boy. Pasta. I would kill for a noodle, especially if it’s drenched in cheese sauce of any kind.

ANGI: How is it working with hot guys and sexy women all day?
SUSAN: It sure does make the day go by fast.

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK:  What’s your favorite scene from your DEBUT release, LOWCOUNTRY BOIL?
SUSAN’S GOTTA ANSWER:  Wow, that’s tough! I guess it would have to be the chase scene near the end of the book where Liz gets to ride a jet ski—so much fun! I can’t really say too much about it without giving too much away.

SUSAN’S GOT A QUESTION FOR READERS!
If you have an e-Reader, has the way you select books for your reading list changed since you bought it? How? If you haven’t bought an e-Reader, do you plan to, or do you think you’ll always want to touch the paper as you turn the page?

  2. What a wonderful interview, wow. And congratulations on the awards as well.

I'm really looking forward to reading your book! Am curious about the title--is it something you can explain or do we need to read the book to find out?

ps: Adding "ocean surf on an endless loop" to my shopping list.

    1. Thanks so much, CK!

Lowcountry boil is a regional dish that has shrimp, sausage, corn, potatoes, and usually beer. Most folks throw other stuff in the pot as well. It's a big pot of a lot of stuff that comes to a boil. :) Check out my Pinterst board, Liz Talbot's World for a picture of it. :)

  6. Hi Susan,
I love me some Wizard of Oz too, but what gave me that lifelong gut wrenching fear were those darn flying monkeys! I had to cover my eyes until I was like…well, never mind. That’d be embarrassing!

Your story sounds fantastic. Looking forward to reading it!!

  8. Hi Su8san,

Kindred spirits on loving the sound of rain. I even love the thunder roaring and lightning flashing. Somehow, I feel all cozy being curled up inside with a good book. And I, too, read at night and tend to get lost in the book. Did that last night. 1:30 am before I put the book down. Thanks for sharing with us.

  10. Hi Susan, congrats on the upcoming release!!! I think it's great that you travel with your husband while he's working. What a fabulous way to do research if you're in the right area, come across new ideas, and get your writing done (less distractions like laundry and other household perils-- grin).

I agree--A light drizzle on the windowpane, a good book in your hands, a comfy couch with a snuggly throw-- they all mix together for a perfect Saturday afternoon as far as I'm concerned!

  11. Great interview! Congratulations on your release. Maybe one day we'll be in the same city and I'll make you some pasta! Ciao bella!

    1. Well, it wasn't the REAL ocean. I have an old cd that is just ocean surf--that's all. No music. I loaded it into iTunes, and that's my writing soundtrack. :)

  14. Your novel looks like great fun. I bought a hybrid Escape last year. I couldn't really afford it, but I couldn't bring myself to buy a gas engine yet again. Best of luck. Looking forward to it.

  15. Every time I read this blurb I like the book more. Great interview. I too love me some pasta. I could have noodles with every meal and be a happy girl. Congrats on all this great success. May the book fly off the shelves!

I have a Sony Reader that was a present, but I still buy books just like before. Which is word of mouth from my friends or a new writer I *meet* on a blog with a book that sounds good.

    1. Oh, Terri! Thank you so much! (Notice I'm learning I can respond individually now. I am such a newbie. :) ) My love of pasta is what keeps me going to Jazzercise. :)

  16. I read e-book descriptions to decide what I want to read--just like I read the back of the book at the library or bookstore. I also find books by word of mouth quite often. Sometimes the title will pull me in, or the fact that it's an award winner. I'm not a big genre reader, so I have to use all sorts of ways to find good books.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Val, I'm finding that browsing books for me has changed significantly. Of course, there's still word-of-mouth. But with millions of e-Books available, I find that I search quite differently than I did when walking through a bookstore.

I have a Kindle but I don't think I'll ever stop buying paperbacks. Sometimes I just want to hold one in my hands. I love the feel of a book.

    1. Thanks, Joanne! I still love the feel of a book in my hands as well. I travel quite a bit, so the convenience of an e-Reader is also great.

  19. Wonderful interview, guys -- it's so nice to meet my fellow GH finalists. And congrats on the book, Susan. It's looks like so much fun.

The biggest change for me, owning a Kindle, is how easy it is to download a sample for free. I think this rewards writers (like me!) who need a chapter or so to get my characters' voice in the reader's head. I've definitely bought books while reading in bed at [let's just say embarrassingly late and leave it at that, shall we?] a.m. because I had to keep reading that story!

    1. Magdalen, I know exactly what you mean about reading late into the night. And the whole instant gratification thing really works for me, too. Want a new book at midnight? No problem. :) Thanks for stopping by!

  20. I admit it. I'm still old school. I like holding the paper book. But my biggest problem with e-readers is that I buy so many books that I can't recall what i have!! But I do love the ecological impact of non-print books, so i'm trying to adapt. Thanks, Susan!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I struggled with that for a long time, Tracy. I do love the feel and smell of a book. Ultimately, it became impractical for me to lug around all the books I wanted to take when we travel, which is more than most folks. I'm happy to have options. :)

  27. Susan -

Welcome to Get Lost In A Story! My New England born son went to the Citadel for college and fell in love with South Carolina in fact the only reason he came home after graduation was to pack up half our home to furnish his first "home" in Greenville! His job transferred him a couple of time back and forth from there to Charleston and back but has recently relocated him and his family to Columbia.

My grandchildren are one of the reasons I love my Kindle because I can "pick up" books and load them before going down to visit. Whenever Grandma and PaPa show up they always want us to read them a new story!

I really hesitated to get an ereader when they were first released but when they closed our only local bookstore it was a "must have". I do miss being able to turn the page of my favorite passages of a "real" book but definately like to be able to pre-order books and have them "magically" appear as soon as they are released.

PS: Being from New England my husband and I will miss visiting the minor league Red Sox stadium in Greenville when we go to South Carolina to visit. Much less expensive than visiting the major league team in Boston, MA!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh, Jeanne! We LOVE going to Drive games! If you're ever headed to Greenville again during the season, give me a shout, and we'll take one in. :) Thanks so much for the warm welcome!

    1. Susan -

I would love to meet you. My three South Carolina miss the Zoo there now that they are in Columbia and we hope on one of our visits to take them back to Greenville for a visit. We love the "walks" in downtown Greenville as well. Someday we hope to retire but my son and his wife want us closer to Columbia when we move so we've been looking at Camden as a closer alternative but loved Greenville on our visits there.
