Romance with an Edge

TEXAS WIDE OPEN

ASIN: B008H6GJ4K

Katie Harris loved growing up on a ranch. She had her horse, the beautiful Texas prairie, and Cole Logan, the cowboy next door. But there are a lot of secrets hidden under a Texas sky…

Katie always knew she’d marry Cole one day—until he broke her dreams and her heart. But now that Katie’s father is sick, she’s back home, older, wiser and nowhere near the love-sick fool she once was.

Cole knows Katie doesn't want anything to do with him. But after so many years, he can’t pretend she’s no more than a neighbor. Not when thinking about her cherry lip gloss and hell-for-leather passion is keeping him up all night. Holding his ground was hard enough when she was seventeen. Now that she’s her own woman, Cole’s heart doesn't stand a chance…

THE OPEN BOOK
Katie watched as Cole slowly turned, and at the sight of his bare chest, smooth and ripped with muscle, she locked her knees to keep upright. Instead of his inviting smile, there was a hardness she rarely saw that contrasted with the desire in his eyes.

Cole stood and stared. The silence between them crackled as if a whole conversation could be said without words.

Her breathing quickened ... She refused to hide her body’s reaction even as a flush of heat rushed to her cheeks. She’d been waiting all of her life for this moment. She was tired of hiding. She was ready. Unashamed, she gazed in his eyes and let the wealth of her feelings pour into her face.

Cole was no coward—he returned stare for stare—but she could see his jaw flex and knew he was pissed. She’d pushed him hard, but this was where the women separated themselves from the girls.

“I’m not a child any longer.” She took a step closer.

“And I told you, if you wear that shirt again, I’ll burn it,” he growled.

But Cole would have to do more than display a little anger to scare her. Before she lost courage, Katie crossed her arms and pulled.

She threw her shirt in his face, along with her challenge. “Go ahead and do it.”

KC KLEIN has lived most of her life with her head in the clouds and her nose buried in a book. She did stop reading long enough to make a home with a real life hero, her husband, for over sixteen years. A mother of two children, she spends her time slaying dragons, saving princesses, and championing the belief in the happily-ever-after. Her debut novel, Dark Future, is a finalist in the 2012 Prism contest and has been honored with a reviewer’s choice award. Her other titles include a science fiction romance anthology, Hotter on the Edge, and a new contemporary romance, Texas Wide Open. KC loves to hear from readers and can be found desperately pounding away on her laptop in yoga pants and leopard slippers or more conveniently through her website.

HEARTS WIDE OPEN
ANGI: THANKS FOR JOINING US KC !!
KC:  First of all, I want to say thank you to Angi and Get Lost in a Story for allowing me to be here. I love doing guest posts and author interviews. To me it’s a total riot!

ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?
KC: Ahh, sad. I used to get lost in a story 2-3 times a week, now it rarely happens, since I don’t have much time to read for pleasure. But a good thing about being a writer is that there’s always a current story in my head and I can get lost in a story any time I want. (And sometimes even when I don’t want to like… when I’m driving.)

ANGI: What’s the first book you remember reading?
KC:  Great question! I love telling this story. I was in second grade, bored out of my mind when I found a copy of Super Fudge by Judy Blume. After the first chapter I was hooked and realized I’d never be bored again as long as I had a book in my hand.

ANGI: What do you like about the hero of your book?
KC:  Oh, what’s not to like. J Seriously, I've always loved the tortured hero, and Cole Logan is no different. He has some deep secrets that have scarred him, but he also longs for love and trust in his life. He is the total alpha-hero and a cowboy so that’s just yum in my book.

ANGI: Is there a playlist you’d recommend for reading your latest release?
KC:  Music is a huge part of how I write. To me music blocks out all the noise and helps me to find that emotion I need to make each scene pop. So that’s why I LOVE Pandora. I can match the music station to where I am in the story. So, just for fun, here is the list of all my stations on Pandora. And please, if you think of an artists or genre that I might’ve missed and would like, leave me a comment. I’m always on the lookout for some great music:

Dance Cardio Radio, Club / Dance Radio, Shania Twain Radio, Piece Of Me Radio, Last Of The Mohicans Radio, Carolina Liar Radio, Nickelback Radio,   Evanescence Radio, Coldplay Radio, Muse Radio, Pink Radio

ANGI: Where do you read and how often?
KC:  When I do read it’s usually in the bathtub with my kindle safely encased in a ziplock bag. Oh, and there’s usually a solo cup of red wine somewhere in the area.
ANGI: What sound or noise do you love?
KC: Rain on the roof

ANGI: Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?
KC: Totally Action Adventure

ANGI: What was the first story you remember writing?
KC: Another great question. This is a hard one. Like many authors I started and stopped so many stories I've lost count. I do remember starting an epic historical romance that swept across the continents of Europe, Australia, and Asia. I never did quite figure out the logistics of how my characters would travel to each of these places in the scope of their lifetime. That might’ve been one of the reasons the story never got finished. J

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
KC:  Last of the Mohicans. Also, Terminator one and two run a close second.
ANGI: Terminator 1 & 2 are a couple of my all-time favorites !

ANGI: Who’s your favorite villain?
KC:  Syon, the villain in Dark Future. He was so diabolical, but so freeing to write.

ANGI: What is your biggest vice?
KC:  As a writer it is procrastination. I have such good intentions, and then I look up and my writing day is almost done, and I've made no progress on my story. In order to crack the whip better I've got timers all over my house. I really try to take a strict approach to social media and networking.

ANGI: How is it working with hot guys and sexy women all day?
KC:  Awesome, but draining. They can be so demanding sometimes. It’s like they think the whole book revolves around them. They’re not interested in my problems at all—like what’s for dinner, if I should shower, did I remember to pick up the kiddos from school…

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: KC, I totally understand driving around listening to the voices in your head (although, mine don’t get me lost >>grin<<). Where did you get your inspiration for DARK FUTURE?
KC’S GOTTA ANSWER:   I still get lost, and I've been living in the same city for more than half my life!!! Needless to say, GPS is my friend.

Dark Future was the first novel I completed and was a labor of love for years. I hand wrote the entire book over lunch breaks, my kids 15 min nap times, and long car trips. I started writing Dark Future because at that time in my life I wanted real, raw, and intense. I wanted to be swept away in a world that was harsh and unforgiving, something totally different than the mundane day-in and day-out rhythm that sometimes takes over your life.

Critics and fans alike have called Dark Future gritty, intense, and fast-paced. I think that comes across because I wrote this book through postpartum depression, lay-offs, job changes, financial worries, marital stresses, and health concerns. I wrote almost every day. I carried my notebook everywhere I went, and by the time I was done I had to use masking tape to hold the binding together. No matter what was going on in my life if I could write one scene, one page, than I had won a small victory that day. And if I wrote that day I was one step closer to realizing my dream of being a published author.

UP NEXT: What’s coming up for me is a second novella in the Dark Future world that will be in the next Hotter On The Edge anthology. Also, I have the second book in the Texas series, tentatively named HUSTLIN’ TEXAS. It’s the story of Nikki and Jett who you meet in TEXAS WIDE OPEN. I hope these characters find their way into readers’ hearts like they did mine.

  1. Good Morning KC !! and welcome to GLIAS !

I read in both formats. Love to curl up with a book, but I love my new eReader (Google Nexus) for traveling--makes carrying four or five books with me much easier, not to mention all the reference books I constantly need to help me spell.

  2. Hi Angi and KC,

I am a die-hard print fan. Although, I have crossed over and read two e-books on my laptop. (An eReader has not entered into my world yet.)

    1. It is hard to give up the print book. Paperback books have been some of my best friends growing up. Congrats on crossing over though. I think once you try a reader you'll never go back. :)

  3. I've always been a fan of the print book, something to hold on to, but once I got my iPad, I can't get enough of the e-books. Just click, download, and read. I don't have to wait to go to the store.

I can't wait to read Texas Wide Open. Even if I don't win, it's on my reading list.

  6. Hi K.C.! I love reading print books, even if ebooks save more space. I love the smell of print books, I love the feel of them.

  7. KC! Nothing like hiding your blog appearances!

I love your SuperFudge story. Books are awesome!

As for book format, I used to be print all the way! But being able to sync my Kindle with my iPhone has advantages, too.

    1. OH Abigail!!!! So good to see a familiar face. I was pretty sure the Lala's are sick of me talking their ears off. Hehe!
I know the SuperFudge story is great, right. I would love to meet Judy Blume in person one day. Maybe.

  8. I prefer to use my e-reader because it is smaller and lighter than most paper books.

  9. Hi KC! Your drive and determination to keep on writing, no matter what, is very inspiring. Next time I'm backed into a corner, I'll think of you scratching out bits and pieces every day to keep me on track.

As for books, weren't the old embossed covers just awesome? Miss those, but I've fallen in love with my Kindle because it's so portable. When I read a book I absolutely love, I buy the print version for my Keeper Shelf. Dark Future is front and center here in my office, and I'm reserving a spot for Texas Wide Open, 'cause I KNOW it's gonna be great. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Jaye (waving madly). No, no, the inspiration is the other way around!!! You Lala's are the best. It is an honor to have you guys in my writing circle. :)

Thank you for your kind words about DF. Texas Wide Open is a totally different book, so we shall see. (biting my nails)

  10. Great interview! I prefer reading on my kindle, the only thing wrong there is I have to older kindle and it is a little heavy. I read both though kindle and paper books, kind of switch back and forth.

    1. Hi Quilt Lady. LOL!

I switch back and forth also. Craft books and such I would like a print book, but fiction I would like it in e-format.

  11. Hi KC,
Great interview! I prefer reading on my Kindle b/c it's much lighter weight than a book, but I like flipping through pages since that's much easier in a book than a Kindle. :)

  12. I really want to read this book! Sounds right up my alley

As far as reading, it's Kindle for me! I love my Kindle.

Here is the exception...the daily newspaper. We are reading it on the iPad and I have to be honest...I'd rather read the paper version. However, I think that's because I'd rather do the crossword on paper than on the computer! :)

  14. Hi, I like both print and e-books, but when it comes to a lower price or something to read on the airplane, I love books on my Kindle.
I'm happy to see you write in several genres. That must be hard to do and harder yet to get published, but my hat's off to you for doing it. I love to see a writer be able to follow several interests at once.
