#GetLostInAStory with guest, author MARY BEHRE

Welcome, Mary, to Get Lost in a Story.
And this is a return engagement for you--
how wonderful!

Let's Get to Know Mary: Mary Behre is the author of The Tidewater
Series. Stories with humor, suspense, and a psychic love-connection. Her debut novel, SPIRITED (Tidewater Novel #1) was an award-winning manuscript before it sold to Berkley Sensation. GUARDED (Tidewater Novel #2), is already receiving praise from reviewers and readers. The Tidewater Series features three sisters separated years before in the foster care system. They search for love, each other, and a way to live with their psychic abilities. In each book, they’re tossed into the middle of mysteries that only their unique gifts can help solve.

Blurb from Guarded:

She’s given up on finding love…  Veterinarian Shelley Morgan has always preferred animals to humans, and not simply because she can communicate with them psychically. Unlike most people she’s known, animals have never broken her heart. But after six months in her new town, some of her favorite four-legged companions begin disappearing from the local zoo. Determined to track down the animals and their thief, the telepathic vet decides to investigate, unknowingly delving into a deadly mystery…
He’s ready to make her heart go wild... Although his bear-like physique has been an advantage in the Tidewater Police Department, Dev Jones’s size often intimidates people. Only Shelley has seen past his massive build to the intelligent man inside, but that was years ago. So when she contacts him requesting his help to solve a series of animal kidnappings, he’s eager to reconnect with her. But the thefts escalate to murder and all the evidence points to Shelley as the killer, and Dev faces a devastating choice: forsake his career or risk losing the woman he’s grown to love…
Read a little, Buy the book:
“Dev, the last time Jules and I saw each other—”
“You were both children.” Dev scooted closer to her on the couch and took her hands in his. “I don’t know everything about what went on with you two, but I remember enough to know the last time you saw her was hard. On both of you. Shells, give her a chance. I’ve gotten to know her. She’s a great person. A lot like you. And I know she misses you.”
“She does?” There was no missing the doubt and confusion in her eyes.
“She does.” He nodded. “Give yourself a chance. You deserve to know your family. Take it from someone who will never get an opportunity like this. What you have here is a gift. Grab it with both hands, Shells.”
The touch of her cool, delicate hands between his much larger ones sent a jolt of awareness through his body. From the way her eyes widened, she must have felt it too.
Shelley sucked in the right corner of her bottom lip. The sight of it thundered straight to his tightening groin. “All right. I’ll go with you to Tidewater, tomorrow. But that ocean view had better be spectacular,” she joked.
“Satisfaction guaranteed.”
“Thanks, Dev.” She beamed at him, then cleared her throat and pulled free from his touch. “Your girlfriend is one lucky woman.”
“Shelley, that relationship ended a long time ago. I . . . uh, don’t have a girlfriend.”
“You broke up? I’m sorry to hear that.” But the smile on her face and the dilation of her pupils belied that statement. She licked her lips and leaned closer to him. Her soft fingers entwined with his rougher ones again. “Really sorry.”
Awareness rocketed through him.
“Don’t be. I’m not.” And, oh God, her lips were right there. The scent of Shells, vanilla and sugar, teased his senses. His mouth watered for just a taste. Dev craved a taste of her, just a sample. Slowly, giving her time to pull back, he lowered his head.
THINK YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? YOU’LL NEVER GUESS!

And now for the good stuff, a little Q & A:

VICKI:  How often to you get lost in a story?
MARY: Hi Vicki! Thank you for hosting me on GLIAS! I’m thrilled to be back!

VICKI: How often to you get lost in a story?
MARY:  Every chance I get. I’m a huge reader. I have four bookcases stacked two rows deep with novels. If it has a happy ending, I’ll read it. Right now, my bed stand has books by Valerie Bowman, Lena Diaz, Lynne Silver and Suzanne Brockmann waiting to be read.

VICKI: Is there a “Blooper” in your story (it may have been changed before printing)?
MARY:  Oh yes. One of my characters is big into pop culture references. Twice he calls the heroine Mary Jane Parker. Oops! It took my nine year old to point out that it’s Mary Jane Watson. Luckily, error was caught before the final version went to print or my spidey senses would still be going haywire. LOL

VICKI: Do you write while listening to music?
MARY: I write while listening to a 3-6 minute clip of music on a constant loop. SPIRITED was written to Maid With The Flaxen Hair by DeBussey, but GUARDED was written to Early Takes Serenity (Soundtrack from Serenity). I need the music to be wordless and short enough that went it starts to loop over, I don’t notice enough to stop writing. It’s like white noise only it inspires creativity, at least in me. :)

VICKI: What’s the first thing you do when you finish writing a book?
MARY: Type THE END. LOL The first thing I do when I finish a draft is pour a glass of wine and let myself breath for a few days. I watch movies or bake or just hang out with my family.

VICKI: What would you say is your most interesting quirk?
MARY: I collect mementos for each book I write, then I take the souvenir with me when I travel. So for GUARDED, I bought a toy ferret. I carried that ferret everywhere until I finished the book. Now it sits on my shelf unless I’m at a book signing, then the ferret will show up somewhere on my table.

VICKI: What three things are, at this moment, in your heroine’s purse, satchel, reticule, weapons belt or amulet bag (whatever she carries)?
MARY: My heroine doesn’t carry a purse. She has a wallet that she shoves into her back pocket. All that’s in there is her money and ID

VICKI: What is your hero’s “kryptonite” – in other words, what will bring him instantly to his knees?
MARY: Besides the heroine? His family. He’s a sucker for his family. He might be a big, tough city cop, but he comes from an enormous tight-knit extended family.

VICKI: What will always make you smile, even on a bad day?
MARY: My husband and children. No matter how bad it gets, they light up my world.

GOTTA ANSWER:
VICKI: Mary, I am all about handbags. I would like to know what is your favorite bag? (It can be an every day one, evening, or just a favorite!)
MARY: I have an over-sized black purse that I’ve lately started carrying. It’s big enough to carry my Mac, snacks for the kids, my wallet, keys, and even a book or two. It’s huge and clunky and I love it!

Got a question you'd like to ask your fans?

MARY: If you had the choice which crift would you rather have: the ability to talk to animals or the ability to talk to ghosts?

Thank you, Mary, for letting me discover

  1. Interesting plot. Looking forward to reading it!

I would choose animals. Ghosts are just too scary for me.

    1. Hi Kathleen,

I know, right?! Sometimes, there are things you just don't want to know.

Thank you for the compliment about the covers. The artist is a genius. I totally loved the second cover so much, I re-wrote a scene to match artwork. :)

  6. For Spirited, I bought a black knockoff Gucci purse. (Not a Prada like in the story, but when I saw it, I had to buy it...for $3.00.) :)

Also, for Energized (working title) Book 3 in the Tidewater series, I bought a toy blue owl. Hannah has a thing for blue owls.

  7. I love the idea of having a novelty item for each book you write...especially the animals. And yes, I would LOVE to be able to talk to animals. That would be so cool. Sorry to say I've not read your books "yet" but would love to now that I've heard about them. Love romantic suspense. Congrats on your book!

  8. Oh man, that's a hard one. Since I've never encountered a ghost though, I think I'd choose animals. I'd love to see what they have to say for themselves. :D

  9. As much as I would like to talk to animals, I already do a decent job of understanding them since I've trained cats, dogs and horses for several years. So, I'm going to choose ghosts. I would love to be able to still ask my dad for advice.
