Karilyn Bentley Returns to Get Lost

DEMON LORE
A Demon Huntress Novel

Gin Crawford has enough problems dealing with her empath abilities. Finding out she's the world's newest demon-slayer is the last thing she needs. Unfortunately, when she slips on a mysterious bracelet she is given no other choice. On the plus side, her new gig comes with Tall, Dark and Handsome, a mage who may or may not have her best interests at heart. Thrust into a power-play between good and evil, Gin must choose a side before she becomes the next victim in the ongoing battle.

KARILYN BENTLEY'S  love of reading stories and preference of sitting in front of a computer at home instead of in a cube, drove her to pen her own works, blending fantasy and romance mixed with a touch of funny.

Her paranormal romance novella, Werewolves in London, placed in the Got Wolf contest and started her writing career as an author of sexy heroes and lush fantasy worlds.

Karilyn lives in North Texas with her own hunky hero, a psycho dog nicknamed Hell Hound, and a handful of colorful saltwater fish.

A NEW YEAR, A NEW SERIES
ANGI: Karilyn's last series was the Draconia Tales. When she was on GLIAS last year, I asked, "Why Dragons?"
KARILYN'S ANSWER: I’ve always found dragons fascinating. They’re huge, scaly and pretty much the biggest, baddest things out there. Plus they have wings and can get places faster than walking. My dragons perform magic and turn into sexy men. Who doesn’t want a sexy man flying them places and protecting them from harm? <g>

ANGI: So let's find out why a new series about a Demon Huntress?
KARILYN: I know you hear this all the time, but the character just appeared in my head one day. I kept seeing a scene where a doctor was shot in the hospital. Originally this was part of another story written years ago (as in the first book I wrote, which is currently hiding inside a box in the closet never again to see the light of day) and I loved the scene but couldn't figure out the rest of the story (or at least the rest of the story someone would want to read. Trust me, no one wants to read that hiding-in-a-box book!). One day I was writing on this funny scene which took place in a hospital and thought, huh, what if I joined the two using the heroine from the funny scene and made the doctor a secondary character? Then the story took off. I'm a pantser (in case you didn't figure that out! ha!) so I don't always know where the story will take me. It turned a dark corner and stumbled into the realm of demons and the women who hunt them. And the Demon Huntress series was born.

ANGI: I think writing a character who is an empath would be difficult enough. How does Gin handle becoming a slayer?
KARILYN: Not very well. But once she put on the demon-slaying bracelet, it won't come off so she must learn to adjust to her new job. After all, it comes with a sexy hot mage. <g>

ANGI: Can you tell us a little about your tall, dark and handsome mage?
KARILYN: Aidan Smythe is a guardian mage of the justitians (the women who wear the special bracelets (justitias) and hunt demons). He's assigned to Gin. He's about as happy at the assignment as she is to learn she's the newest slayer. But he takes his job seriously, rescues Gin from several messes and resolves to teach her everything she needs to know. Whether or not she wants to learn.

ANGI: What’s your favorite scene from DEMON LORE?
KARILYN: Gin's first training session with Smythe. She wants her coffee. He doesn't think she needs the caffeine high. Cracks me up every time I read it. <g>

ANGI: You’ve mentioned that Darth Vader is your favorite villain. Do any of his qualities appear in any demons in your book?
KARILYN: Great question Angi! I love Vader b/c of his character arc. You can like or hate the movies, but his character moving from innocence, to pride to greed to redemption is awesome! And I hope I've stuck some of those characteristics into the characters in this series. The reader will have to tell me if I succeeded on that score.

ANGI: Do you have a recommended playlist for DEMON LORE?
KARILYN: Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones and Demons by Imagine Dragons (you gotta love a band with dragons in the name!)

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: Do you have a sneak preview of the next book in the series?
KARILYN’S GOTTA ANSWER:  I have just finished the first draft and am doing heavy rewrites. In this book, Gin must determine whether or not a murder spree is connected to demon activity and what the demon wants in order to stop a bioterrorism attack. Here's a paragraph (and please excuse any mistakes, it's still the first draft):

A minute later we stand by the red and black burst, the colors hanging in the air, drops of acid rain in a pristine lake.
A full body shiver shimmies down my spine, spreading chill bumps across my flesh. The scent of sulfur hangs in the air like a demonic stink bomb. I want to slap a hand over my nose, but no one else seems affected by the stench.
Must be a demon-huntress thing.
"Justitian," Smythe mutters. "Not demon-huntress."
"If you don't like my new title, then stay out of my mind."
He glares. I swallow. Cross my arms. Refuse to take a step back. Go me. I will not be intimidated by memories transferred onto one who means me no harm.
My justitia vibrates, throwing me out of my internal battle, pulling me back to the land of death and minions. The blob of colors pulsates, a glowing snapshot of a moment frozen in time.
The moment the demon appeared to the grad student.
Granted, I'm still taking Demons 101, but I thought demons formed minions in private. Usually after a crime was committed, not before. A tryout, so to speak. And maybe that happened, but it sure seems to me like the black blob of demon force appeared to the grad student smack in the middle of the hallway.
Or maybe that always happens and I just now noticed it.
The justitia's vibration grows stronger, trembling my arm, my veins. Not happy tremors either. A rush of images spikes through my mind, scenes of fright and terror coupled with blood and death, memories of the justitia's former wearers captured in time by the entity in the bracelet.

I'm not the only one freaked out by the colored blob. How bad was this demon to scare a justitia?

UP NEXT for KARILYN
The Detective's Dragon is releasing this year. Unknown date and unfortunately I don't have the cover. It's the fourth book in my Draconia Tales series and features Jamie (the boy from the trilogy) as the hero. He crosses dimensions, ends up in Denver and meets his mate. What happens when the one you love is from another dimension?

  9. Hi, welcome. Gosh dragons, yeah never met a dragon I didn't like. Now as to a magical bracelet. I really think disappearing would come in handy. Either that or have it be like a cash dispenser. That'd be awesome.
