Hot August Nights! Post-RWA First Friday With the GLIAS Crew!

Hi Get Lost in a Story Fans and Friends. Welcome to the First Friday crew report after the RWA Convention. I hope you all enjoyed our pictures and videos from the Romance Writer's of America annual meeting in San Antonio. Today our GLIAS crew question continue on the RWA theme as we share our favorite RWA moments.

Lizbeth

I have a treat for you all -- three final video interviews from RWA with two of the biggest names in romance and a brand new RITA winner!

Here's my super-fun chat with the one and only ELOISA JAMES where she tells us what's next for her not only in books but in her personal life--it's really awesome!

And now meet USA Today best-selling author JENNIFER BERNARD whose Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel books are some of my very favorites. Check out me admitting how much I LOVE Jenny Bernard:

And, finally, here is double-RITA nominee CARLA LAUREANO talking about her book "Five Days in Skye."  Drum roll please:  she WON!! the RITA for Best Inspirational Romance. Listen to the interview to hear why I'm so excited I'm dancing about that!

And, of course, my own very favorite moments at RWA this year revolved around the honor of being a RITA nominee. I "lost" in the Contemporary Romance category to the fabulous Molly O'Keefe (see Maureen's video below)--if you can call it losing. I certainly have no regrets or sadness--my category was filled to the rim with the top names in romance. There's only honor at being in their company. And, hey, Nora "lost" with me, too!!
A really special certificate!
Avon RITA finalists: Me, Katherine Ashe, Zoe Archer & Tessa Dare

I had a great time at this year's RWA conference!  It was my second time going to Nationals, and it's always a fun, but slightly overwhelming, experience :)  There were a lot of great moments, but one of the standouts for me was meeting Julie Miller.  I've enjoyed her books for a long time, and when I introduced myself to her, she said, "Oh yes, I recognize your name."  I was totally shocked--Julie Miller knows my name?!  Such a thrill!

Now that I'm home, I'm diving back into my writing routine.  My second book, FATAL FALLOUT, releases TODAY in e-book format, and on Tuesday in print.  (Here's a link for the Kindle version and the Nook version).  I hope you'll pick up a copy--Thomas and Claire are two of my favorites, and I loved writing their story!

Angi

This was definitely Angi's favorite moment--meeting me at the Harlequin Party and taking a selfie. I mean ... would there be any doubt?

I had a wonderful time seeing all my GLIAS pals. But getting them altogether at one place was amazingly hard. LOL

I got the biggest kick out of having "fans."  Real people ... In person
...Who had read my books ...
and had favorite characters

Readers might get a kick out of meeting authors, but I can't express what it means to be an author when someone tells you they love your stories. That's everything !!

My favorite part of RWA National Conference each year is seeing friends, sharing some laughs in the bar, and seeing some local sights. Sure, I go to learn, but each successive year I go to fewer workshops and spend more time in meetings, cocktail parties and simply having fun.
This year, my highlight has to have been RITA night. Not only was one of our own GLIAS gals nominated, (congrats Liz!!!), so were two of my local chapter mates: Molly O'Keefe and Susanna Kearsley. Not only are Molly and Susanna friends, Molly has been my critique partner for 12 years and she's one of my very best friends.

And.... both Molly and Susanna won!!! Both of them in categories with large numbers of nominees and very stiff competition. It was a great ending to a fabulous conference.

Here is a short video to sum up my RWA14 experience featuring friends: Amanda Vyne, Julianna Stone, Olivia Gates, RaeAnne Thayne, Molly O'Keefe, Susanna Kearsley, Morgan Rhodes aka Michelle Rowen, and some of the crew from Amazon Publishing. Good times!

Alexa
Hello, hello! RWA Nationals was so much fun for me, too! I hadn't been since 2010, so it was sort of like my 1st time all over again. It was overwhelming but soooo exciting. I saw friends I hadn't seen in ages, attended a few workshops to bring me up to speed, and this year I volunteered, which was extremely satisfying. I figured RWA has given me so much it was about time to pay it back.
One of the highlights for me was getting to spend time with a friend I'd lost touch with years ago, Cat Schield. Cat used to be a regular participant of our Get Lost family and she's the one invited me here.
As for how I plan to spend the hot August nights, well I'm afraid it's not all that exciting. I will be working on edits for my next romantic suspense novella, WAKE ME, finishing a new project, and gearing up to teach another year of middle school English.

Hello, all!  I'm stuck in Colorado (okay, no one's ever really stuck in Colorado) on deadline, so I'll miss my peeps in San Antonio.  All is not lost, however, because I'm there with you in spirit, and my Roving Reporter Assignment is to interview the incomparable COURTNEY MILAN.  The Countess Conspiracy, the 2014 RITA nominee is Book Three in the Brothers Sinister series.  Not only is Courtney an accomplished author, be sure to check out her bio, and then be sure to check out her books. See the Courtney Milan interview posted on Thursday, July 17.

I'm so excited to be reporting for GLIAS "live" from San Antonio. Already found the coolest store here for Western fans like me, The Wandering Cowboy. They have Justin boots, authentic Stetson hats, HUGE belt buckles, even a cowhide chair for us weary travelers.

I haven't bought anything--yet. But I saw a cool braided horsehair necklace has my name on it...

During my time here, I'm making an extra effort to catch up with authors who've been my guest for "Best of the West" interviews on GLIAS.

Last night I had dinner with Jacqui Nelson, my most recent guest who just put out her latest Western historical romance, BETWEEN HEAVEN & HELL. We avoided the heat by taking up strategic positions in front of an outdoor fan and ordering cold Sangrias. Haven't run into any RITA nominees yet, but they can't evade me forever.

On the Eve of RWA Nationals, a Chat with Lizbeth Selvig, RITA finalist

First, congratulations to Lizbeth Selvig on her 2014 RITA final!

All of us at GLIAS are so proud and excited for her, and we'll all be rooting for her the night of the awards banquet in San Antonio.

Hi Jill, my GLIAS and Golden Heart Sis! It’s so nice of you to take time to interview me here on my favorite blog where I write with some of my favorite friends and fellow authors!  I need to say, this RITA final is pretty much unbelievable and a huge thrill—I mean, you’ve seen the company I’m in – holy moly, what am I doing here? Nonetheless, I’m honored to be representing Get Lost in a Story as well as the 2010 Unsinkables Golden Heart Group!

Jillian: So, tell us about getting the RITA call.

Lizbeth: The story is semi-humorous. I had a critique meeting that morning and had to leave home before 9 a.m. When I reached the meeting place my crit partner was not there and the thought flit through my mind that she was late because she’d finaled in the Golden Heart. Lo and behold—that’s
Invite and RITA pin!
exactly what happened! (Shout out to Ellen Lindseth—a GH finalist in the Historical category!)  All during our meeting I kept an eye on the growing list of RITA finalists, but at 2:00 my name was not included.
Admittedly, like everyone who hopes to final and doesn’t, I was bummed. I went to the gym to wallow during my work out, but before I could get in, I got a call from a friend way up in Alaska. She said, “Last night I dreamed you were a RITA finalist.”  “Well,” I told her, “It was a nice dream.” “Don’t you know?” she asked.  “Know what?” “Oh my gosh, you ARE one!” That’s how I learned I was a finalist by way of Alaska! Turns out, Terry McLaughlin, RWA prez, didn’t have my cell phone number and had left me a pretty fabulous message on my landline! You can bet I scared the dog with my whooping!

Jillian: Share a blurb about the nominated novel, Rescued by a Stranger.

Lizbeth: Jill Carpenter is a woman with big Olympic dreams and an even bigger heart.

When a sexy stranger with a tragedy in his past and a secret too painful to share rides to her rescue on a vintage motorcycle,Jill's vision of her future changes quicker than she ever imagined it could.

Chase Preston wants nothing more than to forget his past and keep his identity to himself. He has no business getting in the way of Jill's dreams -- even if he can't help but fall in love with her.

But a very unusual stray dog, two teenage sisters with attitude problems, and a crotchety old farmer, conspire to push Chase and Jill deeper and deeper into a love like they've never experienced before. A love that could lead to understanding, absolution, and a perfect happily-ever-after.

If only they can learn to trust.

Jillian: Your heroine, Jill Carpenter,  is an animal lover with Olympic dreams. Tell us about her.

Lizbeth: Jill is one of the nicest heroines you’ll ever meet. She’s just plain a good heart and talented in so many ways. She works at a large stable where she teaches lessons and hones her own riding skills. She gets the chance to earn a spot on the US Equestrian Team, but her dilemma is that she’s also a vet student and very gifted teacher. Then, of course, the man who could be the hero of her dreams throws a wrench into everything!

Jillian: Chase Preston, arrives on the scene on a motorcycle. Without giving away his secret, mistake-filled past, what should we know about him?

Lizbeth:  Chase’s motorcycle is a classic 1975 Triumph Bonneville—a totally hot bike in my opinon! It’s not giving away much of a secret to the readers to say that Chase is a runaway doctor from a free clinic in Memphis, TN.  He’s sexy, he’s funny, he’s kind, he’s pretty much the sort of man who’ll turn himself inside out to help people – especially the woman he comes to love. But he’s lived through a tragedy that has turned him away from the profession he loves and made him certain anyone who finds out what happened will lose all respect for him. The problem is he, too, is very gifted at what he does and he cares about people so much that eventually he can’t help but let his own secret out, and when he does, everything he fears comes to pass.

Jillian: Please share a brief excerpt from Rescued by a Stranger.

Lizbeth: Here you go:

Excerpt:

The right side of his upper lip, as perfectly sculpted as the rest of his features, lifted in an Elvis-y half grin—a cute-on-handsome action that made Jill’s mouth go parched again.
“Sounds like we’d best get you out before Lizzie Borden the truck here changes her mind about killing you.” His warm humor-filled voice calmed with its hypnotic Southern cadence.
“I’d be very, very good with that,” she replied.
“Let’s try the door.” He reached for the handle.
“No! Wait. Don’t! Whenever I move the whole thing rocks. I—”
“Okay, it’s okay.” He held up his hands. “I’ll look first and see how solid she’s sitting.”
He stepped away and walked slowly around the front of the Suburban. Jill took the time to regroup. She wasn’t a wimp, dang it. This was stupid. The man already believed she was half-baked. She needed to stop whining and simply crawl out. And she had to get the stupid truck out of this stupid ditch or she’d miss the most important riding lesson of her life. Maybe if she could see how to straighten her wheels she could just drive—
“She isn’t hanging on by a lot, you’re right.” He returned to the window. “But you should be able to ease out this way. I’ll open the door very carefully. Trust me.”
Trust him? For all she knew he had a handgun in his pocket, a twelve-page rap sheet, and a mug shot at the Post Office.  “Fine.” She grimaced. “Just don’t mug me until I’m fully out. One crisis at a time.”
His slightly nasal laugh flowed between them, as musical as his voice. “Gotta love a woman who’s funny in the face of adversity.”
Funny? This merely kept her from weeping. In addition to causing expense for which there was no money, this accident was messing up two appointments she couldn’t afford to miss.
“I’m not being funny.” She wriggled out from behind the steering wheel. “On the other hand, if you murder me right here I’ll have a great excuse for being late.” She edged to the passenger side and glanced at her watch. “Make that very late.”
“Lizzie here didn’t murder you, and I’m not going to either.”
He tugged on the door and it hit the slope, barely opening ten inches. Jill was small, but not that small.
“Great. Just awesome.” She eyed the stranger dubiously.
“I’m afraid it’s out the window for you.” He shrugged.
“Well this gets better and better.” She simply wanted out, and she reached for the oversized tote she used as purse, clothing bag, and carry-all. “Would you toss this on the ground?  I hope that stupid dog appreciates its life.”
     “It’s on its knees thanking—”
     “All the angels?” she teased.
“Yes, ma’am.” The return of his Elvis-grin sent a flutter through her belly. He hefted her striped, leather-handled bag and grunted. “Lord love a monkey, what have you got in here? Car parts?”
“Riding boots.” She reached for the top of the window opening and suddenly heard what he’d said. “What?!”
“Sorry, my granddaddy’s saying. Gotta admit,” he grunted again, “didn’t expect you to say boots.”
“Only because you don’t know me,” she muttered.
“Let’s go then. We can do getting-to-know-you once you’re free.”
The easiest way out was head first, since it caused the least amount of wiggling. But halfway out, with her torso flopped over the doorframe and her knees hovering above the passenger seat, The Creature slowly swung its nose downward. She shrieked.
“Got you!”  Strong hands caught her beneath the armpits.
The Creature spun left and spit her from the window.
The momentum squirted her out and propelled the stranger backward. One second Jill’s shoe toes skimmed the window frame, the next she sprawled atop a very long, very hard male body. He grabbed her, and held the back of her head expertly, as if people fell on him all the time and he knew precisely what to do.
“Sorry. Sorry. I’m okay. Are you okay?” Her words were muffled in his shoulder.
     She should move.
     He should move.
Instead, his chest rose and fell beneath her, and his breath warmed the top of her head. His fingers formed a firm brace at the base of her neck, and he lay like a stone beneath her. When she finally made the tiniest effort to roll away, his free hand planted itself on her hip.
“No,” he commanded in a hoarse whisper.
     No?
“Relax. Make sure you’re all in one piece.”
She certainly didn’t know this guy well enough to relax in a reverse missionary position with him . . . but the pleasant musk of masculine perspiration prickled her nose and mingled with the redolent scent of his leather jacket. Her eyelids floated closed in spite of herself, and she went all-but-limp with relief. When he relaxed, too, however, she couldn’t ignore his long, lean form beneath her or the intense pressure gathering low in her body. She tried to concentrate on the fact that nothing bad was happening while he held her—no accidents, no animals dying, no worry she was late for . . .
“Oh my gosh!” She jerked hard against his hold.
Immediately he released her, gave her shoulder a squeeze, and a mini explosion of sparks raced for every nerve ending in her body. She pushed onto her hands and stared into eyes as calm as a waveless lake.
“Hi,” he said, his mouth only inches from hers. “I’m Chase Preston. Nice to meet you.”

Jillian: Now, for the question I've been dying to ask: Tell us all about your dress for the awards banquet. Details, please!

Lizbeth:  Trying on formal dresses is traumatic for me. At 5’1 and mumble, mumble, mumble pounds—I sort of look like a bowling ball in a dress – lol. But I found a navy blue, floor length gown with a youthful  tiered overskirt of chiffon, a wide hip-to-bust waistband, chiffon caps on the sleeveless bodice, and a V-neck that goes low but not too low. I love it—it does have an oh-so-slight touch of prom dress to it, but it’s actually pretty flattering for a round lady with no height! I’m faithfully using some self-tanner on my, um, dĆ©colletage area, and “shapewear” (hah, our grannies called them girdles) is on my shopping list!
Jillian: The dress is lovely, Liz. And LOL––I never put on a dress without shapewear under it! ;)

Jillian: Okay, on a scale from one to ten, one being not very, and ten very––how excited are you? Because here at GLIAS, we're sooooo excited for you. Like at least a ten!
Lizbeth:  Believe me, my excitement dial goes to 11! The nerves won’t fully hit until ceremony night but then I know they’ll hit hard! I have no delusions that I will walk home with Ms. RITA—but then again, she’s a surprising lady, you never know. What I do know for sure is that I’m grateful and humbled to have so many good, good friends rooting for me and knowing that it truly is an honor to be a finalist!

Jillian: Have an amazing, memorable conference and good luck, Liz!

The Phenomenal Courtney Milan & 2014 RITA nominee The Countess Conspiracy

Courtney, welcome to Get Lost in a Story!  Congratulations on being a 2014 RITA® nominee for The Countess Conspiracy!  We at Get Lost in a Story are Roving Reporters checking in on RITA® nominees and asking them, ideally, fun questions.

about THE COUNTESS CONSPIRACY:

Sebastian Malheur is the most dangerous sort of rake: an educated one. When he's not scandalizing ladies in the bedchamber, he's outraging proper society with his scientific theories. He's desired, reviled, acclaimed, and despised--and he laughs through it all.

Violet Waterfield, the widowed Countess of Cambury, on the other hand, is entirely respectable, and she'd like to stay that way. But Violet has a secret that is beyond ruinous, one that ties her irrevocably to England's most infamous scoundrel: Sebastian's theories aren't his. They're hers.

So when Sebastian threatens to dissolve their years-long conspiracy, she'll do anything to save their partnership...even if it means opening her vulnerable heart to the rake who could destroy it for good.

DONNELL:  Courtney, you’ve had major success in your writing career.  I’m curious when an RWA board member called and told you you finaled, what was your reaction?
COURTNEY: No matter how successful you are as a writer, it’s always such a huge boost to final in the RITA. I had no idea what to expect—the rules for the RITA this year were very different, and my books tend to be love/hate, so I don’t always do well in contests. I was just flabbergasted. Then delighted. Then my hands started shaking. And then I started convincing myself that I’d made it all up.

DONNELL:  What does finaling in a National competition like this mean to you?
COURTNEY: On the one hand, finaling in the RITA is such a huge deal. The fact that it is peer judged means that the people who liked my book were writers. On the other hand, I felt that the fact that some categories were not adequately represented was a real problem, and one that if left untouched, could really effect the reputation of the contest. I hope that matters.
DONNELL:  How many RWA conferences have you attended, and what is one thing you want to do while you’re in San Antonio? At the conference?
COURTNEY:  I’ve been to every RWA since Dallas in 2007, and I hope to keep attending as long as I can. My challenge for this year is to try to get some running in at the conference. I very rarely leave the conference hotel, but I’ve been told the Riverwalk is gorgeous and I’ll have to walk down it.
DONNELL:  What is your favorite thing(s) about attending Romance Writers of America conferences?COURTNEY: For me, the best part of every conference is always catching up with old friends who I see maybe once a year. It’s both friendship and business. I always learn the most from just sitting and chatting with people in the bar.
DONNELL:   Have you been shopping yet?
COURTNEY:  I have a book coming out July 15th, so all my conference readiness will get crammed in after that. It’s going to be a whirlwind experience. J
DONNELL:  I tend always to overpack?  Are you a smart packer?  Do you bring back loads of books?
COURTNEY: I wasn’t a smart packer, but then I found Erin Knightley’s AMAZING “how to pack for conference in a carry on” video:

She is a genius—and her method totally works. I’ve done it now for both RT and RWA, and I owe her big time for it. I don’t bring back books at all—I don’t let myself pick them up anymore, because I don’t have room in the house for them.

DONNELL:  Are you nervous?
COURTNEY: Not at all! There are so many historical finalists, and with so many incredible books, that my chances of winning are just about nonexistent. I’m just going to wear a pretty dress and enjoy the show.
Now if I was in one of those categories with only two finalists, THEN I would be nervous.

DONNELL:  What are you working on right now?
COURTNEY: I’m working on finishing up the last book and novella in the Brothers Sinister series.

The final book is called THE SUFFRAGETTE SCANDAL, and it’s the romance between Frederica Marshall, an idealistic suffragette who owns a newspaper, and Edward Clark, the jaded scoundrel who tries to take her on. After that, there will be one last novella in this series—called TALK SWEETLY TO ME, which is the romance between Stephen Shaughnessy, an author of biting social commentary, and Rose Sweetly, who is a computer—which in the 1880s means that she does slide-rule calculations of celestial bodies for an astronomer.

Thank you, Courtney!  I’m going to be cheering you on from Colorado!

BIO:
Courtney Milan’s debut novel was published in 2010. Since then, her books have received starred reviews in Publishers Weekly and Booklist. She’s been a New York Times and a USA Today Bestseller, a RITA® finalist and an RT Reviewer’s Choice nominee for Best First Historical Romance. Her second book was chosen as a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2010.

Courtney lives in the Rocky Mountains with her husband, a marginally-trained dog, and an attack cat.

Before she started writing historical romance, Courtney got a graduate degree in theoretical physical chemistry from UC Berkeley. After that, just to shake things up, she went to law school at the University of Michigan and graduated summa cum laude. Then she did a handful of clerkships with some really important people who are way too dignified to be named here. She was a law professor for a while. She now writes full-time.
