Nancy Holland: "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad"

Popular author Nancy Holland takes over Get Lost in a Story today, with insights about her new release "Felyn's Curse," book two in her Witch King trilogy from Tule Publishing. Let's give her a hearty GLIAS welcome!

I went to a workshop at RWA several years ago where the speaker said the second book in a series has to be the best because it sends people back to the first book and makes them want to read the third. Other people have said that the first book is most important because it makes people want to buy the rest, or that the last one is most important because it makes them want to buy more of your books. What I learned from writing Felyn’s Curse, the second book in my Witch King trilogy, is that, as usual, it’s more complicated than that.

My primary goal when I wrote Felyn’s Curse was to avoid “sophomore slump,” the phenomenon where someone’s second year of college, season in the majors, work of art, etc., falls far below the standard set by the first. Thalgor’s Witch was such a powerful book I knew that its sequel needed to be something special, too. I approached that challenge in three main ways.

The first was a response to the one negative comment I got pretty consistently on Thalgor’s Witch -- the main characters weren’t very likeable. I actually agree, but Thalgor and Erwyn were strong and made a definite impact on readers. So, one thing I did in the second book was to try to make Felyn likeable without making her weak. (Her hero, Varz, takes longer to grow on people).
I knew all along another thing I had to do with Felyn’s Curse was to use everything I’d learned about writing since I started Thalgor’s Witch. The story is more coherent; there is a clear villain; and when Felyn saves Varz, it comes at great personal risk. The third thing was harder. Could I bring the same passion to a book that was not “the book of my heart?” To help accomplish that, I wrote about a third of Felyn’s Curse in one week!

So, what did I learn from writing my sophomore fantasy romance? It all comes down to a cliché, I’m afraid -- every book has to be the best book you can make it. The only difference with a second book in a series is that it also carries with it the baggage of readers’ specific experience of the first one. I just finished revisions on third book in the trilogy and, believe me, that baggage only gets heavier.

PS--If reviews say the first book was better, expect to sell lots of copies of that one. A win-win!

Read an excerpt from "Felyn's Curse":
Her knees softened as she leaned into him. Never had kissing a woman brought him so close to the edge of reason. The intensity of it, witch blood to witch, staggered him. This woman was his, and he lowered his hand to cup the roundness below her waist, ready to claim her.
But he couldn’t. Too much stood between them. He might never deserve the bliss of loving the woman in his arms, but he certainly didn’t deserve it now.
He forced himself to stop, step by agonizing step so she would not take his withdrawal as a rejection. He brought his hands back to her waist, loosed his hold on her, then regretfully lifted his head.
She frowned slightly, but didn’t protest as he pushed her gently away.
“We can’t,” he managed to choke out as he fought for control. “Not here, not now.”
She blinked again in the same sleepy way. She smiled at him, and he was lost.

Felyn looked up at Varz in wonder. What was this strange magic between them? She felt alive in a way she never had before. Her body felt heavy, yet her mind was light, dancing on the wonder of the unfamiliar marvels Varz’s kiss revealed. She felt strangely complete and yet wanted, yearned for something she could not quite imagine.
He smiled back at her, almost shy. The crown of flowers was slightly askew and one long strand of black hair hung in his face. He looked like no more than a boy. He looked like. . .
“Li!” Her heart felt as if he had cut it from her body. “You are Li’s father.”

THE Q&A
ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?
LYNNE: Quite often. Most recently I read a book by Karen White, The Time Between, where I got swept away to South Carolina and the beach.
I also often get lost in my own story as I write. I love those moments where I am totally in the zone.  That definitely happened while writing Sweet Home Montana.

ANGI: What’s your favorite thing about your book’s hero?
LYNNE: Wade Conrad is a self-made man, having started his own company from scratch with another computer geek. By staying married to the job, he has made his first million. Of course it has cost him on the personal level. I also love how Wade learns to forgive in this book. It takes a big person to admit they’ve been hanging on to anger, to finally release it, and honestly move on. That was necessary for him to do, so could open his heart to Erin.

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
LYNNE: The Last of the Mohicans (you know why!)

ANGI: Salad or soup?
LYNNE: Soup, homemade, if possible. If not, I love the clam chowder from our local seafood restaurant. It’s the best on the west coast, as far as I’m concerned. Of course, there’s nothing like clam chow-dah in Massachusetts and Maine. (Where my husband is from)

ANGI: Champagne or Soda?
LYNNE: Champagne, please. I love how it tickles my nose.

ANGI: Geek or Jock?
LYNNE: Hybrid. A bit of both? I like to think I’m a jock, but I’m way past that stage in life. I now walk daily for fitness and to get those dang 10,000 steps! I’ve never been a first-rate geek anyway, but I do get engrossed in the oddest things.

ANGI: The most daring thing you’ve ever done… Care to share?
LYNNE: It might not sound daring to some, but for me, a person who doesn’t necessarily have a fear of heights but definitely has a fear of falling, I have ziplined. Twice! Once in Kauai – who could resist those gorgeous views, which were gratefully distracting while I zipped high above them. The second time was in Whistler, BC. Wow, that was amazing because the first snow had fallen and we ziplined over the forest with the white capped firs beneath. The true sound of silence, other than the whir of the zip line. I’ll never forget it as long as I live.

ANGI’s GOTTA ASK:  Where is your favorite writing place & why?LYNNE is giving away _A copy of Forever A Father, the first book in the Delaneys of Sandpiper Beach trilogy for Harlequin Special Edition

LYNNE’S GOTTA ANSWER:  I am not able to write in public or on airplanes, and it is very hard to write in hotel rooms, too. So my favorite place to write, is my office. The day I retired from my 26 years as an RN, I ordered a desk which my husband put together for me. See picture. I love my office. I’ve written all my books at that desk, though the computers have changed a few times. It’s my special place.

Nancy Holland New Release: THALGOR'S WITCH

Happy Thursday GLIAS friends! I have a treat for you today. Wonderful author (and my good friend and critique partner) Nancy Holland, a several-time GLIAS guest, has a super special release today and she’s agreed to come back again and share an excerpt with you. It’s not every day an author gets to publish the book of her heart-but when you read THALGOR’S WITCH (from Tule Press) you’ll see why this is one of those “heart books” that was chosen for publication!

Give a big GLIAS welcome back to Nancy Holland!

THALGOR’S WITCH--BLURB

In a land of perpetual war and wandering, warrior Thalgor not only leads his people in battle, but keeps the hope alive that someday his displaced tribe can rebuild the kingdom that was lost to the treachery between witches and men. When he captures a beautiful witch, he knows he cannot trust her. But to succeed in his quest to find a new home and prevail over his enemies, he also knows he needs her.

Erwyn might be a slave and feared for her powers and precognition, but she doesn’t cower when confronted by the feared warrior. Nor does she act as expected. Thalgor’s kindness confuses her. His flashes of humor confound her. And the reaction he ignites in her body creates a longing that she cannot deny.

Neither anticipated falling in love. The stakes are high, but when Thalgor is mortally wounded, Erwyn realizes she must she must accept help from an unlikely source to save him.

HERE'S AN EXCERPT FROM THALGOR’S WITCH
[Erwyn has let Thalgor think her younger sister is her daughter. He asks her why.]

“I thought motherhood might protect me.”
She smelled the leather of his breastplate, the subtle aroma of maleness that surrounded him. She smelled and savored, and hated herself for that as well.
            “Protect you from what?”
She pulled free and sat back on the rock. “From you.”
He walked away and stood with his back to her.
“You know I cannot take you by force.”
“I did not want you even to think of me that way.”
He gave a low laugh. “As if I would take captive a witch and her child if I did not think of her that way.”
“But I have been useful to you.”
“Very useful,” he acknowledged, turning back toward her. “But I am not certain it has been worth the trouble you cause.”
“The trouble I cause?” She stood to face him. “I made an enemy of Batte, I know. But you can handle Batte. Otherwise I see no trouble I have caused you.”
He took her by the shoulders.
The delicate trembling in her body began again. The moon behind him shadowed his face so she saw only the movement of his head as he lowered it toward hers.
“No.” She pushed him away and fled back to the camp.

Thalgor sat on the rock Erwyn had abandoned and laughed.
Not caused him trouble! The witch had done nothing else since he first set eyes on her.
She only troubled his body at first. So badly he could scarcely think of anything else, could scarcely sleep, could scarcely look at her without being awash in lust.
The lust had finally overwhelmed all that was sacred to him, even the memory of his mother’s suffering. His need to take doubled by the battle lust that day, he’d carried her off to the woods with every intention of breaking the only vow he ever took.
But she had been so vulnerable, so empty not only of her power, but almost of herself. Empty because she worked to save his wounded men, warriors who would not have been wounded if he’d listened to her warning.
The need to take had died when she fell asleep in his arms. In its place had grown something he could not name at first, but now knew was tenderness. A strange and unexpected thing, that tenderness.
Not that the lust went away. Once the witch was whole again, it returned double. And grew each day.
So he avoided her when he could and cursed his weakness for her when he couldn’t.
Tonight she had confided in him, allowed herself to weep, and he thought perhaps…
She had never been with a man, he realized with a sudden certainty.
His body was swept with waves of lust, tenderness, and a need to protect that fragile body with its great powers.
The Sea Witches gathered their strength from the sea and from their total devotion. She could not become one of them if she surrendered to her desire for him.
He never doubted her desire. He had witch blood enough to see it in her eyes, smell it in the air around her, feel it in her touch. That would have to be enough. For now.
Rygar waited when he reached the edge of the camp.
“Trouble?” Thalgor’s hand went to his sword.
The younger man shook his head. “Erwyn left the camp. You followed her. She returned alone. I came to make sure she didn’t turn you into a toad.”
