Romance and Danger in the French Alps with Laura Boon

A book set in France, a dash of Alpine danger, and snow on the cover? I am so there! Welcome Laura Boon – whose debut novel The Millionaire Mountain Climber, out now, is clearly tailor-made for me.

About Laura...

Laura Boon stole her first romance from her father’s bookshelves as a teenager, The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, and was immediately captivated. After holding a variety of positions in publishing, from bookseller to sales rep and publicist, she eventually found the courage to write her own stories. She was born in Zambia, grew up in South Africa, and went to university in America. She now lives in Australia with her husband and their adorable Pekingese Beau. When she is not reading or writing, she enjoys sleuthing for artisan chocolate and beautiful stationery, watching tennis, and walking alongside Sydney’s beautiful harbor.

Connect with Laura via her website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Goodreads.

 When danger threatens a bona fide city girl, an adventurer is her only hope of rescue

Mountain climber Matt Hanley is a former investment manager whose lean body and rugged good looks epitomize an outdoor adrenaline junky. When his business partner in their country hotel is injured, he needs an efficient replacement in a hurry.

Hailey Gordon lives a chic city life free of adventures and daredevils. She craves stability and security but loses her job and boyfriend on the same day. A holiday job in France is the perfect escape from her troubles.

Sparks ignite when Matt and Hailey meet, but she resolves to ignore the flame flickering between them. Aside from the fact Matt is her boss, she's convinced he is not her type. Matt is determined to teach Hailey to look beyond appearances. He needs to show her how good they are together, even if he must risk life and limb to do so.

Read a little...

Hailey drank in the landscape, noticing the clarity of the late afternoon sky and the way the snow-capped peaks glistened despite the fading light.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” said Matt.  “Trending down the valley, you have the villages of Argentiere and Les Praz and the town of Chamonix. Behind Chamonix you can see the Grand Mama of all the peaks, Mont Blanc.”

“Yes, the pens––and the chocolates.” She shook her head. What hubris to name a pen after the magnificent towering peak, but what marketing genius.

Matt grinned. “Ah, you know the chocolates, do you? We’ll have to buy you some.”

“From the lips to the hips,” she murmured, “and I am sure they don’t do the mountain justice.”

“Come on, let’s get you inside before your face turns blue, and I earn a reprimand from Genie for chatting up scantily-clad women in sub-zero temperatures.”

“Really? You were chatting me up? I’m flattered.”

The smile turned wicked. “You’re welcome.” As he bent to pick up her suitcase, he dropped his head next to hers and murmured into her ear in a low, deep voice, sending shivers down her spine. “For the record, Hailey, your curves are perfect. A little chocolate won’t do them any harm.”

She blushed, and the fire of his words flickered all the way through her belly. When was the last time her ex had paid her a compliment? An appalling thought crossed her mind; she, the High Priestess of Order and Long-Term Planning, was ripe for the picking and contemplating a holiday romance.

Let's Talk!

Avril: Tell us about your change from the business side of publishing to the author side.
Laura: I loved working in publishing for two reasons. I got to meet many authors, most of whom are wonderful, inspiring, generous individuals. And I got to promote books, which I believe are a cornerstone of civilization. Since my early twenties I’ve wanted to write a book of my own, but always feared it would never be good enough. Then I had to learn how to do it. Working with my publisher was a wonderful experience. As an author, I couldn’t have asked for more. I do have this problem creature who followed me home from my day job, my publicity alter ego. She sits on my shoulders and nags me every day about what I haven’t done yet from a marketing, publicity and social media perspective – and no matter how much she whines, I just can’t get to everything! As an author, I’ve realized I have to set goals and then just try to get as close as possible. Being an author is still a surreal experience for me. I’m inspired and touched by the kindness of other authors and readers.

Avril: I love the idea of reading a romance set in the French Alps – what made you choose that setting?
Laura: I love to travel. These days I do it mostly from my armchair. I wanted that escape and thought other readers might enjoy it too. I chose the French Alps because I have been lucky enough to visit them, so I could picture the village where I set The Millionaire Mountain Climber. They’re beautiful, challenging, romantic. It’s also my experience that when you are off home ground, you are more open to new ideas and experiences, so it was a way to both test my characters and give them opportunity.

Avril: I understand your heroine is on the feisty side – are we going to see a few more feisty heroines from you in the future?
Laura: Oh yes! Feistiness is an essential survival skill for a woman. My first romantic heroine was Jane Eyre and she was constantly called stubborn and sullen. I read into that ‘not a doormat’, opinionated, feisty and resilient.

Avril: What’s your favorite kind of hero?
Laura: I like an Alpha who is a Beta – or a Beta who is an Alpha – by which I mean a man who is confident, knows his own mind, and is good at what he does. He can sometimes be bossy, even arrogant, but he is never domineering and aggressive to those over whom he has power. And he has to have a sense of humor. If you can’t laugh at the world, days are dark indeed.

Avril: I know you’re a fellow Georgette Heyer fan – what made you choose contemporary over historical for your foray into fiction writing?
Laura: Ha! I was stupid enough to think a contemporary romance would be easier to write because I wouldn’t have to do research. Yes, I can hear all the contemporary romance writers in the universe doubling up in laughter. It didn’t take me long to work out how wrong I was, but by then I was committed, and my characters determined I would finish their journey. I’m still planning to write historical romance, but first I have a contemporary quartet to finish.

Avril: What’s your pet hate in romance novels?
Laura: First person heroes who describe their achievements in glowing terms. “I’m a ruthless, self-made multi-billionaire, the best in the business with the biggest dick that all the chicks love.” *Gags* I read one that was literally that bad, which is to say I started it, but when he answered the door to interview the heroine for a housekeeping job in nothing but a towel which he then dropped in the kitchen to display his ‘assets’, I fled through the front door alongside her, never to return. I think first person is hard to write for that exact reason; you’re permanently inside the characters’ heads but they absolutely can’t talk about themselves.

 Laura is giving away an eBook of The Millionaire Mountain Climber (open internationally). Comment on the blog to enter, and please include your email address either with your comment, or private message it to Avril Tremayne via Facebook.

Jan Schliesman: How often do you Get Lost In A Story?
Vicki Batman: Oh my, I’d say every day because I read every day, for sure thirty minutes before going to bed.

Jan: What are you reading?
Vicki: Right now, a historical romance and a contemporary romance. Just finished my book club read about Madame Tussaud during the French Revolution.

Jan: It was love-at-first-sight when I met my hubby. How about you?
Vicki: Ha, that’s so funny. A slightly inebriated friend and I were supposed to go to the movies and I’d already determined that wasn’t going to happen when the doorbell rang. There was Handsome and my friend explained and said, “You take her.” I said, “No, it’s okay.” Handsome said he would. Seven weeks later on my roomie’s birthday, he called and I invited him to come to the party. All my friends and family kept asking “who’s that guy?” I said, “Oh, that’s Charlie’s friend.” After that night, he kept calling and calling. He wore me down.

Jan: Do you possess geeky computer skills or are you technically challenged?
Vicki: I possess geeky crafty skills.

Jan: Does your heroine have any of your character traits?
Vicki: She loves handbags and Jeeps just like me!

Jan: Most writers have to find their zone before the words start flowing. Describe your ideal writing day.
Vicki: I go to a 7 a.m. workout, have toast and milk, shower and hit the desk. There’s always a lot to do.

Jan: I keep a case of Dasani in my office. What’s your go-to beverage of choice?
Vicki: Diet Dr. Pepper.

Jan: Best vacation you’ve ever taken?
Vicki: Last year, Handsome and I took our #1 son and his wife on a Rhine River cruise. It was truly magical and I hated to leave the boat. I recommend river cruises to everyone.

Jan’s GOTTA ASK:

Vicki’s GOTTA ANSWER : Oh dear, I hope I don’t get in trouble when I say lemon gelato.

Get Lost With Sherrie Hansen!

Folks, please help me welcome Sherrie Hansen!
WHO IS SHERRIE?
Twenty-four years ago, Sherrie rescued a dilapidated Victorian house in northern Iowa from the bulldozer's grips and turned it into a bed and breakfast and tea house, the Blue Belle Inn.  After 12 years of writing romance novels, Sherrie met and married her real-life hero, Mark Decker, a pastor. They now live in two different houses, 85 miles apart, and Sherrie writes on the run whenever she has a spare minute. Sherrie enjoys playing the piano, photography, traveling, and going on weekly adventures with her nieces and nephew. Sherrie writes contemporary romantic suspense for Second Wind Publishing and Indigo Sea Press. “Shy Violet” is Sherrie’s eighth book to be published.
THE STORY BLURB
When a poor choice leaves school teacher Violet Johansen stranded in the car park of Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland, Violet wonders if she’ll ever find her way back to her comfort zone. She has two choices – to trust a piper who looks exactly like someone she dated a decade ago, or a band of nefarious pirates. Pirates. Pipers. People and mistakes from the past that threaten to haunt you forever… A castle that’s been ravaged and rebuilt… Only time will tell if Violet and Nathan’s fragile new friendship survive the storm and see love reborn.

AND NOW….
ALEXA: How often do you get lost in a story?
SHERRIE:   I’m perpetually lost! If I’m not up reading half the night, I’m working on my latest story, murder mystery, or blog post. I take my Alphasmart or laptop with me wherever I go, and write while I’m riding in the car, or waiting for an appointment. I dream about my characters and wake up with complete conversations running through my mind. My husband always says there’s no “off” switch on my brain, and for better or worse, I think he’s right.

ALEXA: Is there a playlist you’d recommend for reading your latest release?
SHERRIE: I love listening to any kind of Celtic music when I’m writing books set in Scotland, but for Shy Violet in particular, it would have to be the Red Hot Chilli Pipers – fondly known as “bagpipers who rock”.

ALEXA: What is your biggest vice?
SHERRIE: I have two… Krispie Kreme glazed, cream-filled doughnuts and Scratch cupcakes (a moist, Iowan delicacy with buttercream frosting to die for). Well… three if you count All Lovin’ No Oven cookie dough sundaes from Cold Stone Creamery.

ALEXA: If you couldn’t be a writer anymore, what profession would you take up?
SHERRIE: To be honest, I can’t imagine not being a writer. Writing is more “who I am” than what I do. I “do” my job as an innkeeper, hostess, entrepreneur, chef, pastor’s wife, musician, and public relations pro. I dabble in interior design. I just “am” a writer. Speaking as a master juggler of many career paths who’s getting older and more worn out by the day, I’m more likely to give up a profession than take up a new one.  For now, I’m just thankful I get to do it all and that I love what I do!

ALEXA: What would you say is your most interesting quirk?
SHERRIE: I am known far and wide for my unique hats, and almost always wear one when I’m out and about. In my defense (because I admittedly spend a lot on my colorfully coordinated collection), I am convinced that my mad-hatter habit costs less than getting my hair colored and styled on a regular basis.

ALEXA: Which era would you least like to have lived in, fashion-wise and why? Most?
SHERRIE: No matter how appealing and cute the ladies looked, I would not have wanted to live in the medieval or Victorian era where women were laced up tight, made to wear restrictive corsets, and covered in layer upon layer of clothing. I hate tight clothing! I love the flapper dresses and adorable hats currently being featured on Downton Abbey. Definitely my style!

ALEXA: What is your hero’s “kryptonite”? In other words, what will bring him instantly to his knees?
SHERRIE: Nathan’s “kryptonite” is his father.  That’s why, when he found out what happened between his father and Violet, he simply couldn’t handle it.

ALEXA: What will always make you smile, even on a bad day?
SHERRIE: See above. (Dan Aykroyd dancing.)

ALEXA: What inspires you daily?
SHERRIE: I’m a great fan of looking for beauty in my own backyard.  Sunsets, whatever flower is blooming in my garden, a crystalline snowfall in winter, the sugar maple tree outside my door… I love to travel, and find that a change in scenery lifts my spirits and rejuvenates my perspective tremendously. But in between trips, it’s the beauty that surrounds me that keeps me going.

ALEXA: How did you come up with the idea for your book?
SHERRIE: There was a time in my life when something I had done in my past almost ruined my prospects for the future.  At the time… I mean, how could I have known? It was all so innocent. But as Violet soon learns, forgiveness is one thing, but everything we do still has repercussions.  That’s how Violet’s story was born. The backdrop of Eilean Donan castle was cinched the second I heard and saw “Nathan” playing his pipes.

ALEXA: What’s your favorite rerun?
SHERRIE: Even though I’ve seen “Rules of Engagement” dozens of time, Jeff and Audrey always make me laugh.

ALEXA: What’s the last show you binge watched?
SHERRIE: Chopped. I admit it. I’m hooked.

ALEXA’S GOTTA ASK, SHERRIE’S GOTTA ANSWER:
ALEXA: WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTOR/ACTRESS & WHY?
SHERRIE: I’ve always had a thing for Dan Aykroyd. He’s cool, tall, musical, and has a sexy, smirky smile. And… the man can move. I’m a pushover for a great dancer. Natural rhythm is such a turn on.

UP NEXT FOR SHERRIE...
I’m currently working on Sweet William, the next of my Wildflowers of Scotland novels, slated for release in June 2016. I’m half done, and plan to use NaNoWriMo to finish the rough draft.

GOT A QUESTION YOU’D LIKE TO ASK YOUR FANS?
SHERRIE: I’ve written four wildflowers of Scotland novels – Thistle Down, Wild Rose, Blue Belle and Shy Violet. Which of the flowers do you most identify with?

Thanks so much for joining us today, Sherrie! Folks, make sure to comment because Sherrie is giving away a copy of Wild Rose. (North America only)

Get Lost in Pipe Dreams and Ashantay Peters

Get Lost in a Story Readers, I’m delighted to introduce to you Ashantay Peters.  I had the lovely opportunity to meet Ms. Peters a few years back. She’s charming and fun, and I know you will love her, too. She’s also a romantic suspense author with the Wild Rose Press, and as you will soon learn she also dabbles in fantasy and PIPE DREAMS. Let’s get to know her further, want to?

 ABOUT PIPE DREAMS:

 Abigail Stephens left her past behind or did she? When she moved to Blue Peak, she expected to find sanctuary and a new start. Instead, her new home includes a hippie, a ghost with a mission, and a sexy coffee house owner who undermines her plans.

Carlos Young quit teaching when his fiancĆ©e left him for another professor. He’s avoided dating, but his mother’s demand for grandchildren is unceasing and more attractive once he meets Abby.

She resists his overtures...for now. Can an intrusive mother, a reticent ghost, and a run-down house bring Abby and Carlos together or will they continue to live pipe dreams?

Excerpt

         “So are you the new owner of this wreck?”

         Her hands clenched, along with her jaw. “I’m the proud owner of what will soon be a lovely home.”
         He snorted. “You planning to have this in shape any time before winter? Because from where I’m standing, you’ll need more than a mop.”
         Abigail’s ears heard echoes of Rich. “I have power tools, and I know how to use them. You have an issue with that?”
         “No, I don’t have an issue. You’ve got work ahead of you. Just sayin’. I guess you’ll be hiring a crew for the big stuff, right?”
         Abigail threw her shoulders back. This guy sounded exactly like Rich. Bossy. “I can handle it.” She’d already sub-contracted the larger jobs, but that wasn’t his business.
         His mouth drew into a tight line, his hands fisted on his hips. “Sorry to bother you. I stopped because it looked like you might need a hand. Guess I misunderstood.”
         Dropping his hands, Carlos turned to leave, looking back with a frown. “Good luck with this place. Come on, Henry, we’re not needed here.”
         Henry paused, allowing her to ruffle his fur. He broke into a run, following the pissed-off man. An imp on her shoulder prodded her to call after him, “Bye, Henry. You can come visit anytime.” Sotto voce she added, “But leave your human home.”
         The dog’s owner kept walking with his shoulders up around his chin.
“Men,” she huffed under her breath. “Just a bunch of know-it-all jackasses. And the good-looking ones are the worst.”

~~~  AND NOW, LET'S MEET ASHANTAY PETERS!
DONNELL:  Ashantay, welcome. What an intriguing blurb and excerpt, and why are the good-looking ones the worst ;) I love that we’re in your heroine’s point of view and we see she’s comparing Carlos to Rich. I immediately felt sympathy for Abigail. These two are going to have their work cut out for them to get to the happily ever after. Conflict is hard for some writers. How about you?
ASHANTAY: Hmm. Okay, I’ll fess up. My first books were way too nice. Bo-ring, right? Then I learned to do nasty things to my characters for their own good. Ha! Now, late at night after putting my protagonists through the wringer, I rub my hands together and cackle.
 DONNELL:  Blue Peak. I take it this is fictional? Is this based in North Carolina?  You live in such beautiful country.  Is this where Blue Peak is based?
ASHANTAY: Good guess, Donnell. Blue Peak is a fictional town filled with quirky, down-to-earth folks, and based on a small town in my area. I live south of Asheville, North Carolina, not far from a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Appalachians aren’t as rugged as the Rockies, but are truly “purple mountain majesties” at dusk.
 DONNELL:  What is your favorite thing about writing? Do you love the first draft, the revision process, creating the characters…?  Do you outline or plot?
ASHANTAY: I enjoy the whole writing process, though sometimes I’d like to throw my keyboard through the front window. You know, those times when nothing seems to work and the 30k words you’ve sweated out seem meant for the waste basket. Then I take a break and fewer words meet the delete key than expected. Do I outline?  I’m one of those strange hybrids of pantser and plotter. I start with a general story line then allow the characters to flesh it out themselves. Ooh, yes, I hear voices. Insistent voices.
 DONNELL:  When you’re not writing, where will we find you?
ASHANTAY:  In the garden. I love to play in the dirt. If I’m not there, you’ll find me volunteering at the local library or reading. Or eating. Eating is good.
 DONNELL:  What is the most interesting thing you have in your closet?
ASHANTAY: Hang on, I’ll have to look. Oof! Ouch! Clatter. Bang! Let’s see. I’ve got some cool shoes, a handmade pieced and painted silk tunic, and two etched cranberry glass vases that came to me from my mother. (Yes, I cheated and listed more than one thing.) (I am not ashamed.)
DONNELL:  Who inspired you to write, and do you have a book you’ve read over and over again?
ASHANTAY: Gosh, that’s a difficult question. Agatha Christie was an early inspiration, along with Carolyn Keene’s Nancy Drew stories.  I’ve read many--let me stress many--books more than once.  Sometimes a girl just wants to curl up with an old friend.
I LOVE THAT, ASHANTAY. I REREAD BOOKS TOO FOR THE SAME REASON. READERS, ASHANTAY WILL BE ENTERING COMMENTERS IN A DRAWING TO WIN PIPE DREAMS.  AND HOW ABOUT ANSWERING THIS QUESTION:  DO YOU READ BOOKS MORE THAN ONCE?
