An Inspirational Spy Story

Meet one of my dearest friends, inspiring person and wonderful author - Leann Harris

Leann Harris always made up stories. When she saw a movie and didn’t like the ending, she wrote her own. She’s the author of 16 published novels with 2 more coming out in the next few months. She is a founder of both DARA and Ready Writers writing groups. She is a teacher of the deaf, who taught math to high school deaf students and currently teaches writing at Collin College for their continuing education.

A Missing Family and a MI-6 Agent

When Catherine Lyons comes home from college she discovers her family has disappeared, vanished, leaving her alone. Fifteen years later when Catherine is on vacation in France, she sees her father getting on a bus, but he's had a stroke. When she tries to talk to him the nurse won't allow it. Cat shows up at the clinic the next day, but the people there claim to know nothing of the man. This time Cat isn't going to give up. She learns the name of the nurse she talked to and goes to her apartment and finds her dead.
Colin Montrose is with MI-6 and doesn't know who this woman is who has stumbled into his operation, but he wants to know. He follows Cat and asks if she murdered the woman. Before she can answer, they hear police sirens and flee. Together, Cat and Colin chase after Cat's father, trying to discover the truth behind her life and her parent's lives.

Kathleen’s GOTTA ASK: The LAST LIE is a captivating read, and I think it is my favorite of your books. It's great fun. I love how it twists and turns.
Where did you get this intriguing idea of a young woman coming home from college for Thanksgiving and finding her family has up and vanished?

Leann ANSWERS: I’ve always loved spy stories. John le Carre spy stories-Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy is a favorite. And I loved The Man from U.N.C.L.E., so I asked myself what would happen if you parents were moles for the Soviet Union? Today I read Brad Thor and Vince Flynn and their heroes.

Kathleen: How often do you get lost in a story?
Leann I’m always reading. That’s fun, reading before going to bed.

Kathleen: What’s the first book you remember reading?
Leann The Box Car Children then later Nancy Drew Mysteries. And I was riveted by the biography of Helen Keller. I guess that’s why I taught deaf children and ended up writing about spies.

Kathleen: Can you tell us about a real-life hero you’ve met?

Leann Aside from my husband, when I first started writing suspense, there was an evidence detective with the big metro police department. Another writer and I went down to the evidence building and Detective Dave Davis allowed us to interview him. He tried hard to gross us out with crime scene pictures, but when he saw we were serious, he helped us. When I had a question and called him, if he had time, he’d tell me how he’d approach a situation.

Kathleen: What was the first story you remember writing?

Leann: My first book was about a deaf girl in Colorado 1886 and how she was treated back then. Treatment of deaf people wasn’t good, but I’ll step down from my soap box. That book never was published.

Kathleen: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

Leann: Wow, that’s hard. I’m going way back, but I loved the movie “The Vikings” with Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis. I was more attracted to Kirk Douglas’ character, who was the anti-hero than Tony Curtis, the hero.

Kathleen: What’s the first thing you do when you finish writing a book?

Leann: I have lunch with friends, then go out shopping.

Kathleen: If you could interview one person (and it doesn’t have to be a writer) who would it be?

Leann - Winston Churchill. I’ve always been fascinated by him since I was a teenager. And in the book, The Last Lie, Winston is in there.

Kathleen: What question are you never asked in interviews, but wish you were?

Leann: Why do you write? Because I have stories and people running around in my head and they want their stories told.

Kathleen: What drew you to write in the genre(s) you do?

Leann: When I started writing, I always had a dead body appear in my stories. It used to bother me, but then I met other suspense writers and discovered I was normal. Writing inspirational romance is new and that is because of one hero, Zachary McClure. He appeared to me after I read an article about a soldier who lost his leg in the Iraq war and was taking equine therapy and thus Zach’s story was born.
