Author April Fools

Did you know muses love April Fool’s Day? As if authors don’t have enough to contend with, that  claim is true. My Muse certainly does love a good joke, and because I have a lot of writer friends, I know everyone else’s does, too. Why? Because, when they aren’t helping with creativity, every muse that pairs up with an author loves to make its writer look or feel foolish once in a while.

Not every muse chooses April first on which to play pranks—that would make the rest of the year too boring. But, mine happens to have chosen the prankster’s favorite holiday—today—to play a winding and intricate trick this year. And she (I have a smart but very silly female muse who is friends with my very creative but naughty female internal editor) set it up weeks ago!

Thalia, the muse of comedy: my muse's muse!

What’s the dastardly trick, you ask? Let me take you back for one minute to my history of being a great April Fool’s dupe. I might be the easiest person in the world to trick. I never think of the obvious explanation for anything first, and I never remember an old prank so will fall for it multiple times. The best example is that for at least ten years, my son would tape the trigger on my kitchen sink sprayer down and I would turn on the water and get soaked. Every. Year. He even did it a couple of times after he moved out. The sneak.

Fortunately, I’m a pretty good sport. You have to be when you’re a serial dupe. I’ve always wanted to put a chronic fall guy in a book and, so, I included April Fool’s Day in my brand new, soon-to-be-released Sottish Contemporary novel Never and Forever Scotland. I even included a brother who pulled the sink sprayer trick on my hero, and it was darn funny (okay, it was funny to me). Well…the first inkling I should have had that my muse was taking advantage of me being a good sport was when I realized, so sadly, that favored scene didn’t fit into the book. I had to leave it on the cutting room floor.

No worries! April Fool’s Day still played a part. In fact—in a GLIAS exclusive, here is the first line of Never Forever Scotland (an actual thank you, Muse):

“Ewan Portman hated practical jokes.”

Maybe you can see now why that line tickles me! And it sets up our hero Ewan’s receipt of a letter he’s certain is an April Fool’s joke—a letter telling him he’s inheriting a big piece of land in the Scottish Highlands.

Spoiler: it’s not a joke.

My muse dropped her prankster persona while we wrote this story—and we both ended up loving it—adoring it even. But then Ms. Muse picked up her impish mantle again and started leading me toward April Fool’s Day. The first thing I did was pick a release day in mid-March and Muse suggested, “No, wait, the book starts on the first of April—let’s release it on April first!”

Brilliant.

Here are four things that happened: 1) Editing took two weeks longer than anticipated; 2) There were technical issues with the cover; 3) A beta read got postponed; 4) Ms. Muse taped the sprayer down and I got soaked.

Okay, not that last one—but the other three were the writer’s equivalent of getting doused with water, aka, reality. Reality happens to writers.

So it is that Never and Forever Scotland got April Fooled and will not release on April Fool’s Day. Haha—April Fool’s! On a serious note, I just read an article aimed at authors, telling us not to be harsh with ourselves or the world when deadlines, publishing schedules, and writing progress gets changed or thwarted. It’s the world right now—pandemic brain hits authors AND it hits readers. The world is still crazy and not back to normal yet, so we have to continue rolling with the punches. I believe that. We should all be kind to ourselves and others while we get to the end of this stupid time -- and beyond.

BUT! I also believe this: I don’t think my muse has pandemic brain. I think she simply likes messing with me. And in a month—when the book DOES release—I’m gonna get her back!

Happy April Fool’s Day, everyone! I'd love to know – do you like April Fool’s Day or do you pay it no mind? Have you ever played pranks on anyone? What was your best-ever AFD joke?

Lizbeth's Name-dropping Birthday Weekend Part 2

Welcome to day two of my Name-dropping Birthday Weekend Indulgence. This weekend I'm sharing three short posts about my relationship with a couple of my author heroes: some "big names" I’ve been blessed to meet and, in some cases, more-or-less befriend. Each one has inspired me in my own writing and has something special that makes her a superstar not just to me but to all her readers.

Today's dropped name is the incomparable Grace Burrowes! Grace is one of those rare authors who has built herself such a niche that she can carry it from historical romance to contemporary and have fans love both equally. Her Scottish historicals are snapped up by rabid readers and her Scottish contemporaries are snapped up by, well, me!

This is because Grace is one of the smartest authors I know. The way she built her writing career after her only daughter left for college is so inspirational--and so prolific. I would definitely like to nab a little of her author's spirit and pour it straight into a vein! Here's why:  check out "Grace's Bookshelf" on her website--it's an amazing collection of work! In addition she has worked as a piano teacher, a technical writer, an editor and a lawyer!

I don't remember the exact moment I met Grace but what I do remember is that she wowed me with her clever humor, her straightforward answers to questions, and her no holds barred honesty. This is not to say she is ever dismissive or mean--she is
definitely the embodiment of her name. Still, I know if I want an honest look at the romance industry, the state of publishing, the advantages and disadvantages to indie versus traditional publishing, and her opinion on various sub-genres--I can ask Ms. Burrowes and her answer or opinion will be erudite and informed.

(Check out Grace's latest book
MY OWN TRUE DUCHESS
and her brand new
pre-order book

So what I've learned from Grace is that you can be a romance author, write fabulously inventive books and still be so dang smart. In fact, if you want to make it in this industry, you SHOULD be smart and you have to keep making yourself smarter--about your craft, your business, and your books. Plus you should pass all this information on to your colleagues willingly and entertainingly!

Tell me about the smartest person you know. Is this somebody book smart, intelligent smart or street smart? And how has this person changed your life

I’ll be giving away four books on Monday August 13th (my actual birthday!) to commenters over this weekend!Come on back tomorrow when I'll talk about one of my favorite authors ever (in truth she's almost everyone's favorite authors) Kristan Higgins.

Check out my two most recent releases!

Are You Up For a Treasure Hunt?

Good morning! Welcome back to the celebration of my new treasure hunting book, Chasing Gold! Today I thought you might like a few peeks at the actual book. I'm sharing some one-liners with you and another excerpt. I hope you like them!

Holy mother. They were going to die over a treasure they couldn’t even find. (This is one of my favorites!)

I know what he hired you for, but I’m telling you you’re fired.

Simon was pretty sure he wasn’t supposed to hang upside down as he rode the horse behind his fearless leader.

Okay, yes, he was cute in his own way...But she needed someone rugged, tough, ready to slay dragons with her.

Needing to steady herself, she reached out to his arms. Beneath her fingers were muscles she hadn’t noticed before.

His fingers sifting through the soft strands of her hair had stirred much more than his protective instincts.

Desire flared to life, the need for acceptance, a gentle touch, a physical connection.

In the depths of his eyes lay a kindness she’d dismissed before as weakness.

He made her feel cared for, special, like a lass from an era past, guarded by her knight...Oh hell, no.

Between the sound of his voice and the feel of his hands, slow tingles of warmth moved through her, straight to the apex of her thighs.

Sounds good, huh? How about this excerpt:

“Grace!” He reached out to her just as her heels slammed into something hard. Her feet slipped out from under her. Stumbling over a big-ass boulder, she fell, slamming her shoulder hard against the ground. Pain shot down her arm, up her neck. Closing her eyes, she rolled flat onto her backside. Twigs dug into her skin. Wet leaves covered her limbs.

When she opened her eyes, he stood with one foot on the boulder she’d tripped over and his forearms resting on his knees. “Are you all right?” A deep chuckle rumbled through his chest.

Her cheeks heated. No, she’d just made a fool of herself. Um, what had happened to her being the expert?

She pushed herself up on her elbows. “I’m fine.”

Still laughing, he reached out to her. “Will you take my help?”

For a few seconds, she debated. But in the few days she’d known Simon Andrews, he’d been nothing but a gentleman.

Just wait. Most of the men in the business didn’t give her the time of day, arguing she couldn’t be as good a hunter as they were.

She would ignore the demons whispering in her brain. When she slid her hand into his, he pulled her up. Needing to steady herself, she reached out to his arms. Beneath her fingers were muscles she hadn’t noticed before. Thick ones, well hidden underneath his shirt.

“You didn’t hit your noggin, did you?” His palm drifted over the back of her head. Shivers rushed through her, having everything to do with the feel of him surrounding her. Pulling away, she locked gazes with him, the shocking blue depths of his eyes shining through his glasses. She glanced at his lips. How would they feel against her own?

Okay, that's all you get! I hope it intrigues you! And you can always buy it here:

The Story Behind the Story

Welcome back! I'm so glad you decided to continue celebrating the release of my current book,
CHASING GOLD, with me!

Today I figured you'd like to hear the story of how it came to be.

Picture it. Last spring. I, of course, was working on a book. I was happily knee-deep in death, destruction, and love when a friend of mine emailed me and said she had an idea. She told me about a project of our mutual publisher, Decadent Publishing. They were giving people who contacted them a fairy tale and the writer had six months to create a romance adaptation of that fairy tale. My friend said I'd be good for this project. So what did I do? I immediately emailed Decadent and asked for a fairy tale. They gave me The Golden Goose, one I'd never heard of or read before.

Shortly after I read it, I started getting excited about it and what I could do with it. The idea of treasure hunting came to me almost immediately. But treasure hunting in the United States didn't appeal to me. Hey, what about in the Highlands of Scotland? Most of my books are set in contemporary Scotland so I asked if I could set it there. They said yes.

Now I was working on two other projects that had to be done first. They took a bit longer than I'd expected and I soon realized I wouldn't make my 6-month fairy tale deadline. I was pretty upset about it. I contacted the publisher, apologized and explained the situation. I mentioned if I had another month I could do it. They gave me 2. At that point, I realized CHASING GOLD was meant to be!

This story was difficult to start when I was trying to figure out how to adapt the original fairy tale into a romance, but once I decided on the setting and realized it would be an adventure story, the words and ideas came so fast I could hardly keep up with typing them! CHASING GOLD is one of my favorite stories of my own. I hope you'll give it a chance!

Also remember to comment on any one of my posts (or all f them!) this weekend, Friday through Monday, to be in the running for a $10 Amazon gift card and a couple other treats! I'll be choosing a winner Tuesday!

Graham Buchanan is a movie star with many secrets. A Gandiegow native, he frequently hides out in his hometown between films. He also has a son he’ll do anything to protect. But Cait Macleod is too damn appealing—even if she is a journalist.

Quilting with her gran and the other women of the village brings Cait a peace she hasn’t known in years. But if she turns in the story about Graham, Gandiegow will never forgive her for betraying one of its own. Should she suffer the consequences to resurrect her career? Or listen to her battered and bruised heart and give love another chance?

QUESTIONS FOR PATIENCE:

Kathleen: TO SCOTLAND WITH LOVE is a captivating read, I enjoyed it immensely. I noticed you got a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly. Congratulations! Well deserved. It’s very tenderly written. You managed to make me laugh while dealing with some fairly painful subjects. This is the first of the Kilts and Quilts series. This is an intriguing combination. What made you want to combine those two elements, kilts and quilts?

PATIENCE: I love, love, love Scottish romances! Give me a man in a kilt and a wee bit of plaid and I’m hooked. When I started writing novels, I wrote what I love. Did I mention that I love Scottish romances?
I’m also a quilter. And like most quilters, I’m addicted to fabric. Us, quilters, believe that the one that dies with the most fabric wins. I have quite a stash of fabric and add to it whenever I can. I haven’t counted the number of quilts I’ve made, but it’s a lot. Nearly all of them, I have given away.
To Scotland with Love combines elements that I’m passionate about…a story of kilts, quilts, and small loving communities.

Kathleen: What’s the first book you remember reading?

PATIENCE: The Cat in the Hat. I was at my grandmother’s house and no one had time to read to me. I remember sitting with the book in lap, reading it myself.

Kathleen: What’s your favorite “love” word?

PATIENCE: Honey-I-unloaded-the-dishes. It melts my heart every time.

Kathleen: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

PATIENCE: This is a really hard one…but my go-to movie is the 2005 version of Pride & Prejudice. Yes, I adore the Colin Firth version—we’ve all been affected by Mr. Darcy coming out of the pond, dripping wet—but there are elements in the Kiera Knightly and Matthew Macfadyen version that have me watching it over and over again. I love the music (I own the soundtrack). I love the scenery—oh, to be in England. I love the tweak to Mr. Darcy; Darcy’s pride has more to do with how hard it is for him to converse with people he doesn’t know than with him being a snob. Pride & Prejudice is also a movie that my husband will watch with me over and over again too.

Kathleen: What is your biggest vice?

PATIENCE: The honest answer is food. To be more specific, potatoes—any kind. No, I need to change my answer that to chocolate—any kind. No, chicken tetrazzini. I also love brussel sprouts, most things on the menu at Olive Garden, and cake. Boy, do I love cake.

Kathleen: What’s your favorite kind of story to get lost in?

PATIENCE: I like big emotional stories. Stories that have lots of plot with some humor thrown in. I want a story that challenges me, one where I can root for the characters, and live what they live.

Kathleen: I understand you have teamed up with a quilt designer?

PATIENCE: Yes, I’m very excited about our collaboration. For every book in the Kilts & Quilts series, Cynthie from IowaStarQuilts.com is designing a special quilt. IowaStarQuilts.com will then offer the pattern online for those who want to purchase it. The featured quilt in To Scotland with Love is the Gandiegow Star Quilt. We have a real treat for readers, regarding the Gandiegow Star Quilt.
