Get lost in Wolf Lords of London book # 2: Wolf on Fire

WOLF ON FIRE
Jillian Stone

Elle Hathaway is starting to accept her new, wilder wolf side. She’s even adjusting to life with her new wolf mate. But now that they’re talking about marriage, she’s not so sure. Granted, she’s wildly attracted to Detective Inspector Abelseth Durant—the man with the impossible name who’s also impossible to resist—but marriage? Elle senses he cares for her, but is he willing to marry her out of obligation, or love?

Back in London, Elle moves in with her new flatmate and attends Coxley Grey Wolf Academy. She also returns to work at Chelsea Physic Garden and is presented with a somewhat dubious opportunity. There’s been a last minute wedding cancellation—if she and Abelseth want it, it’s theirs. It’s a very odd feeling when the universe decides to play cupid.

Meanwhile, DI Abelseth Durant has his hands full protecting his new mate. He's still got a tube mauling to investigate, and he’s being shadowed by a government agent. For years, the Wolf Lords of London have exercised great power above and below ground, but Abelseth senses a seismic shift on the rise, one that could pose a threat to their very existence.

In Wolf on Fire, closely held secrets of London's wolf culture are revealed as well as the heart-wrenching backstory on the handsome wolf prince who offers Elle everything but his heart.

"Fast-paced and highly original new shapeshifter series."
—NetGalley Review

Hi Get Lost in a Story readers!

I'm very excited to post a sneak peek at book #2 of the new Wolf Lords of London series. You're going to get emersed in the London's wolf culture, meet a few new characters, and get taken on more than a couple of wild rides. Here's an excerpt to give you a tantilizing taste of Wolf on Fire which releases March 10, 2018.

They hadn’t quite made it out of the Wyvern College car park when she remembered. “We can’t practice on Saturday afternoon,” she declared, “we have a conflict.”
Abelseth steered the car onto the exit ramp. “What kind of conflict?”
“Viggo and I can always train with you another day.”
   “What’s wrong with Saturday?”
“We’re getting married—” She swallowed. “You and I. Or is it you and me? I can never remember.”
He braked harder than necessary at the stop sign. “Yes, I’ve always believed that if we married, it would be you and me.” His mouth twitched, and his brows knit together. “You’ve had an abrupt
change of mind. This morning you were rather frosty on the subject.”
Elle sighed. “Well, nothing is certain yet, but it looks like there’s going to be a last minute wedding cancellation at the Chelsea Physic Garden.”
Abelseth turned right onto Finchley and left onto Prince Albert Road.
“Why are you taking us around Regent’s Park?”
“Because I am. What shall it be? Pub food, Chinese? Curry or Tandoori Chicken—do you like Indian?”
Questions like these were a stark reminder that they barely knew one another. “I haven’t had Thai in ages—Tom Ka Gai soup, and the dish with the big thick noodles…” She got out her phone to look up the dish.
“Have you been to the Drunken Noodle?” he asked.
“No, but I hear the food is…” She scrolled through the restaurant’s reviews. “‘Spicy and ambrosial.’ It says so right here on Yelp.”
He stopped at the traffic light and took a moment to study her. Long lashes shaded crystalline blue eyes, that gleamed in the dark. His gaze lowered to her mouth. “Thai food it is.” He leaned close. “With a bit of Elle for starters.”
His lips were soft and sensuous and she felt his kiss everywhere. He cradled her head in his palm and began a slow, possessive assault that included sensuous nips and a lovely chase after her tongue.    A shower of tingles rippled up and down her spine.
It took the rude honk of a car horn to break the spell.
“Bastards,” she whispered against his lips.
“Just when we were getting spicy and ambrosial.” He settled back into the drive. “Tell me more about this wedding cancellation.”

“Elle and Abelseth are a hot couple…witty dialogue with lots of sexual tension
and bickering—heaven!” —Joy Reads Romance

Elle thought about how the opportunity came about. “A cautionary tale of woe entitled the perils of weekend bachelorette parties. Apparently, the bridesmaids thought to do it up right and hired a suite full of male strippers.”
   “Harmless enough one would think.”
“Until the groom led a surprise panty raid. Caught the bride sitting on top of Magic Mike.”
   “Pole dancing?”
Elle nearly convulsed with laughter. “We shouldn’t make fun—poor girl.”
“Poor girl? What about the poor sod?”
Elle tried to frown but couldn’t. “Without their misfortune, we’d be standing up at the Chelsea Registry with a couple of pals.”
“And where will the ceremony be held?” he asked.

“The gallery inside the main building has been reserved for the ceremony—lovely old hall. And the main lawn for the reception party.”
   “Party?”
Elle blinked. “You can’t have a wedding without a reception, champagne, dinner, and cake—perhaps some dancing?”
“In less than a week’s time?” He stole a quick glance at her.
She wondered how long that majestic brow arch would stay elevated. “It’s too late for formal invites, but Violet and Tallis have phones, and we might compose a simple, tasteful email?”
“By all means, let’s put our two busybody mothers to work.” Abelseth turned onto a narrow street somewhere in Soho. “Subject line: ‘No weekend plans? Pop by Chelsea Physic Garden for a wedding party.’”
Elle rolled her eyes, but she also smiled. “Definitely has the right tone—and the good news is, there’s no time to argue over the wording.”
Abelseth appeared thoughtful. “I assume the wedding in jeopardy is already planned within an inch of its—”
Elle cut him off. “We just passed Drunken Noodle.” She pointed out the window. “Look—there’s a spot just ahead!”
“Hold on—” He slipped the Mini into a parking space not fifty feet from the restaurant. Abelseth killed the engine and set the brake. “Tell me, am I about to marry a backseat driver?”
Elle met his gaze and nodded. “But only when starving for Thai food.”

The Wolf Lords of London are Coming!

Under the aquiline noses of kings and queens, London wolf packs have thrived above and below ground for centuries. Below the city, the packs share a private labyrinth of Roman catacombs, underground rivers and secret passages built for trysts between kings and mistresses. And if you know where to look—ancient wolfen halls.

Just as the gently rolling hills of Wiltshire whose standing stones bore the mark of the ancient wolf lords,  the Palace at Westminster does so today, where the Lords, the oldest and most prestigious of all the packs, occupy seats in both Houses of Parliament, two of them rising stars in the Tory cabinet.

But London's wolf packs are in trouble. The bloodlines have grown weak. Too many made wolves,
not enough native blood. In ancient times, wolfen males would hunt down females and force them into marriage contracts. Now, ominously, the practice is starting up again.

Desperate times.

This abhorrent behavior has led to the development of a lycanthrope suppressant, which allows pure-blooded girls like Elle Hathaway to successfully hide in plain sight. But not anymore.

Street pharmacists are being murdered and the supply of lycosopene is drying up fast. Reports of abductions are now commonplace.

Elle Hathaway has spent most of her young life in fear of herself. At least the part of her that grows fangs and claws. With the help of a lycanthrope suppressant, she’s made it through puberty, university, even her first job without so much as a shift. Then one night, deep in the tunnels of the Underground, her life changes forever.

“I don’t know the wolf in me. I’m afraid of her. She’s like…a dark passenger.”
                ~Elle Hathaway

Shaken out of blissful denial, Elle teams up with the handsome inspector to evade the renegade pack. But as her situation grows dire, Abelseth knows the only way he can truly protect the strong-willed beauty is to convince her to shift and claim her as his mate. There’s just one little problem with his plan—the reluctant Ms. Hathaway.

A brief excerpt from Wolf, Interrupted

Outside the cafe, he handed her his card. “If anything pops up, the smallest detail, ring me at this number.”
“Detective Inspector Abelseth Durant.” She grinned. “Poor man, even worse than Luella. My friends call me Elle. What on earth do your friends call you?”
The way he arched that eyebrow was positively breathtaking. “My friends call me Abelseth.”
Elle gave herself a mental slap. “No doubt a family name with a long and noble history.”
He continued to study her. Between Lucy’s flirtation and her own awkward rudeness, the mixed messages must be dizzying. An icy wind gusted under the Inspector’s scarf, and it billowed up in the air.
“Here, let me.” Elle caught one end of the fabric. “I’m good with these.” She folded the length in

half and pulled the ends through the loop, tightening the scarf around his neck.
He observed her every move, each turn and twist of his neckwear.
“There, not too neat, you want to look casual.” She ended up standing quite close to him. Her gaze trailed up the scarf and connected with his lovely eyes.
“Watch yourself tonight.” He spoke softly, almost intimately.
“There were two abductions in Shoreditch last week, both officially charged as missing persons.”
A parting shot of tingly. “I promise to be careful, Inspector Durant.”
He lingered a moment before he turned to leave. “Good evening, Ms. Hathaway.”

Location of Incident: Covent Garden Station
Crime reported by Ms. Luella Hathaway, a third party with no relationship to victim, who resides at 3 Groom Place, Belgravia, London SW1X UK

Description of Incident:

Ms. Hathaway reports to have seen what she describes as a very large canine with black fur, glowing eyes and pointed teeth, bounding along the track as she stood awaiting a train on the Piccadilly Line late Tuesday evening. The animal was running very fast, and as it passed her, it looked in her direction with it’s eyes blazing before vanishing into the darkness of the tunnel.

Soon after, she heard screams. At that point Ms. Hathaway ran from the station. She dialed 999 to report the emergency, and took the night bus home.

The following is an excerpt from chapter three—the interview Detective Inspector Durant conducts with Ms. Hathaway in the cafe at her place of employment, the Chelsea Physic Garden.

Elle kicked off her wellies and carefully removed goggles, gloves, and overalls. Protective clothing got tossed into the laundry chute, everything else would be hosed down and left on a drying rack.
“You run along, I’ve got this.” Julian pressed the trigger on the nozzle and sprayed down her gear.     “Elle, you’ll be late for your date with Detective Inspector Dreamy.”
   “It’s not a date. It’s an interrogation.”
Julian flashed a smirking, one-sided smile. “Don’t let him cuff you, unless you want him to.”
She dashed for the lockers and took a quick shower—scrubbing, rinsing, and repinning her hair. She opened her locker and checked her watch. “Shit. Crap.” In a flash,  she pulled on a sweater, tugged on leggings, and stepped into booties on her way out the door.
Elle took a shortcut through the culinary garden and entered Tangerine Dream by way of the dining patio. Outside the front entrance, she spied a tall figure wearing a long coat. She paused for moment, just to look at him.
She’d forgotten how attractive he was, in an unkempt masculine way. With his collar up and his faraway gaze, he reminded her of the statue of Sir Hans Sloane, the celebrated physician proudly brooding in the center of the garden.
Lucy sidled up next to her. “Who’s the dishy devil with the sex symbol hair?”
   “Detective Inspector Durant.”
   “He’s waiting for you?
Elle turned and stared. “Would you mind not looking so surprised?”

“It’s about time you dropped your knickers.” Lucy waltzed away. “And for a sexy copper—nice one, Elle.”
She opened her mouth to correct her cheeky coworker, then bit her tongue. The thought of something wet and wild with the detective gave her the tingles. She sucked in a breath and opened the front door of the cafe.
    He pivoted. “Ms. Hathaway.”
   “Much cozier inside, Inspector.”
She led the way past a bakery display filled with tarts and cakes to a window table overlooking a small pond. “Private enough?”
The detective did a cursory inspection of the near empty tearoom. “This will be fine.”
They’d barely settled in when Lucy showed up, wearing a flirty smile. “Hello, Elle.” She turned to the inspector and gave him a thorough once-over. “What can I get for the two of you?”
He pulled off his scarf. “Do you prefer tea or coffee?”
For a man with such lovely blue eyes, his gaze was difficult to return. A girl could drown in those liquid crystalline orbs. Perhaps they were the reason she always felt slightly out of breath around him.
“Definitely tea in the afternoon.” She managed a weak smile.
“Shall I order a pot of Earl Grey?”
“Perfect!” Lucy blurted out before she could answer. “Back in a flash.”
He shrugged out of his coat. She thought he dressed rather well, if somewhat conservatively.     Charcoal gray shirt with a darker gray tie, loosened enough to move her evaluation of his dress to conservative, with touches of casual confidence.
“Hard day, or just a long day, Inspector?”
His unsettling gaze never wavered. “More of a puzzling day.”
She brightened. “An average day then, for a Yard man.”
The ends of his mouth curled upward. “I wouldn’t call it average, either.”
Lucy brought a steaming pot of tea to the table, along with a clatter of cups and saucers. “Sorry, don’t know what’s got into me today. I’m all thumbs and dropsies. Can I get you anything else? A lavender scone with clotted cream? The lemon tarts are lovely.”
It seemed Lucy could barely take her eyes off the handsome detective; so much so, she’d gone all thumbs and dropsies.
Elle flattened a grin. “I’d love a slice of brownie cake.”
“Brownie cake?” The detective arched a brow.
“A dense chocolate cake with chocolate drops and nuts,” she explained.
Lucy put in a nod. “Scrummy.”
   “Make that two.”
“Two it is—would you like me to warm them up?” Lucy asked.
He shifted his gaze to their frisky waitress. “By all means.”
She stared at him slightly open-mouthed. He was flirting—with her and Lucy. Detective Inspector Durant was a hottie and he knew it. What remained in his favor, she supposed, was that he didn’t seem to pay much attention to his looks, hence the unkemptness, nor did he appear overly impressed with himself.
He sat quietly in front of her, consulting his smartphone.
“Looks like New Scotland Yard has gone paperless. Rather high tech of them, wouldn’t you say?”

Click on image to read excerpt.
“I thought we might start with your police report. You can confirm, make corrections, elaborate—whatever comes to mind.” He glanced up at her. “If you need clarification, feel free to ask me anything.”
Elle immediately thought of two good questions: Have a girlfriend? Looking for one? Instead, she lifted a small pitcher. “Milk?”
“Just a spot.” He stirred slowly as he read aloud. “Name: Ms. Luella Hathaway. Gender: Female. Address: 3 Groom Place, Belgravia.” He arched a brow at the upscale address.
“I’ve an arrangement with the owner of 17 Chester Street, a Mr. Mokhtaar.”
   “Foreign?”
“Algerian, originally. He lives in Dubai now, spends less than four months a year in London. Last winter the house was completely restored, kitchen and loos updated. He also had a brilliant roof garden designed with a glass house full of rare orchids.” She sipped her tea. “I get the apartment above the garage—”
He surmised the rest. “In exchange for the care and feeding of his exotic flora.” Beneath the surface of those arresting blue eyes, wheels turned. And his double take was lovely, as if he must have another look at her.
    Tingles again—tits to nethers.

Needless to say, this is where the adventure begins for Inspector Durant and Elle Hathaway. After a rival wolf pack attempts to abduct Elle, she is finally shaken out of blissful denial and teams up with the handsome inspector to evade the renegade pack. But as her situation grows dire, Abelseth knows the only way he can truly protect the strong-willed beauty is to convince her to shift and claim her as his mate. There’s just one little problem with his plan—the reluctant Ms. Hathaway.

Urban Wolf: Fang meets fur on the streets of L.A.

“Blood is my bane, wolf, while moonlight is yours. In the end, we’re both monsters, you know.” —Wolf in the City by Linda Thomas-Sundstrom

Hello again… It’s Urban Wolf week, and I’m loving it.

On Thursday, we met the werewolf I met on the back streets of Angeles, and the star of my story Wolf in the City, in the new Urban Wolf anthology. Jared James is one hot, sexy ex-detective werewolf. Yum.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to the feisty young vampire who gives Jared a run for his money on those L.A. streets.

Not your typical vampire, Kit is a quirky, dangerous female with a vow of vengeance against her Maker that equals Jared’s vow for the same thing. When these two meet up, sparks fly in strange ways. Take a listen . . .

“Might be time for you to go home, wolf,” she suggested. “To me, you smell far too good, and like dessert.”
She waited, as if daring him to turn his back.
“Why would I leave when this was just getting interesting?” Jared returned.
“Because I always was a sucker for dessert,” she said. “FYI.”"
—Chapter 1, Wolf in the City

Wearing black as camouflage, Kit blends with the shadows she detests. Besides searching for the vampire who hurt her, bled her, and tried to steal her soul, she’s game for causing trouble with Jared, the werewolf she’s been keeping an eye on.

Really, this is not a match made in heaven. No way. Nohow. Right? So what will happen when
their objectives merge and they are forced to help each other out?

"He couldn’t have imagined that a vampire could be so sexy and sensual, or that she would have so quickly cast a spell to ensnare him.”
—Chapter 9, Wolf in the City

The big question here is whether there actually are vampires with good intentions? And whether the talents they possess is what attracts other to them?

Well . . . I know the answer to those questions, and so does Jared James, who finds out first-hand what to expect .

"And if she could do that—getting close to him so easily and without his knowledge—then by letting his guard down for one single second meant he had fallen victim to her particular brand of seductive power, after all. Trouble? Hell. The word had just taken on a whole new meaning. In this instance, trouble started a V."

Come along to the dark streets of Los Angeles with me, and meet these two for yourself. I’m positive you’ll be glad you did, and that you might be a little more enlightened about these two species and what they are capable of.

Wolf in the City.
A sinfully sexy shape-shifter novella from an award-winning author with over 30 supernatural stories in her repertoire.

Our Urban Wolf anthology is out this week….
What are you waiting for? Jared?
Sorry folks, Jared might just be taken by the time you read this post.
Then again….. maybe not?
(You’ll have to read this book to see). *smiles wickedly*

Thanks for tuning in today, and all week to hear Jillian and I tell our tales.

Please say hello, leave a wave, and ask any question you might have for either Kit or me.  Though she sleeps during the day (in a bed, not a coffin), she has left me some notes.

Cheers for now,
Linda

Inside Urban Wolf, ready to pounce…there's a Wolf in the City

“One bite, one scratch… and chaos reigns on the streets of L.A.”
Wolf in the City by Linda Thomas-Sundstrom

Welcome to the world of URBAN WOLF, my friends, “where strangers become friends and lovers, where secrets beg to be discovered and revealed, and where Happy-Ever-Afters seem impossible but are longed for all the same…”

That’s a quote from a # 1 rated book reviewer that couldn’t have been more accurate (and hopefully enticing). Because I’m hoping you will come along on this wild ride with Jillian Stone and me. And wild ride, it is.

In this 2 author, 2 novella anthology out this week, Jillian and I have chosen to set our stories in different parts of the world. My story, WOLF IN THE CITY, is set in Los Angles, a city I know very well, having been born and raised there.

I was always fairly sure that werewolves roamed the backstreets of L.A. but as a kid, I was afraid to go out and look for them (parents would have nixed that idea real quick). It wasn’t until recently that I met Jared James, one of those werewolves, and he told me his story.

Wow. I couldn’t have conceived of anything as scary or daunting as the true tale of how an L.A detective became a werewolf, and the kind of justice that Jared sought for what happened to him in an L.A. alley.

"The term human had ceased to cover what he had become. Creature was a better choice, and he had the claws to prove it. He was a werewolf –half man, half beast—and had been since hell had come calling on a night like this one.
—Chapter 1, Wolf in the City

I mean, who could have imagined what Jared would find on those streets late at night . . . with a full moon dictating how his future would go down?

Imagine his surprise to find that there are other species roaming those same streets, keeping to the shadows. And that one of them has been watching him for some time! And if that other entity might be a slick vampire named Kit?

“He had been after another kind of monster here, one with canines and claws, and look what had turned up—a female with fangs and a disturbingly cryptic sense of humor.

—Chapter 3, Wolf in the City

Jared James, the tall, dark and gorgeous ex-detective vigilante, had to have his story told . . . so I have told it. I am in love with Jared, and you might be, too. Meet him
in Wolf in the City, my novella in this new Urban Wolf anthology. I can’t wait for you to tell me what you think of Jared. My excitement for this book’s birthday can’t be contained. *Arrrroooooo*

“Two species merging—one with fangs, the other with fur. How could anything good possibly come of that?
Chapter 8, Wolf in the City

And though I have to sign off for now, please stay tuned for more on Jared here and more excerpts from Wolf in the City this Saturday!

Are you reading this post? Please say hello, leave a wave, and ask any question you might have for either Jared or me. The June full moon has passed, so my werewolf is ready to pay attention to whatever you might have to say. *smiles*

Cheers for now,

The Wolves of Willow Bend

GHOST WOLF

Most Lone Wolves have a story—a pack they left behind, a love they lost, or worse, one they buried. Some leave their packs to roam because they crave freedom, and independence. Some leave because in their hearts, they can’t bear to stay. Some leave because they see no way to go back…

Packs attacked. Humans forced to turn. Enforcers murdered. Following near miss assassination attempts on several prominent wolves. The packs are furious, out for blood and ready for war. Julian has been juggling the conflict without a real target for months, they always seem to be just one step behind the Volchitsa and even the wolves they’ve captured can’t tell them enough. With the fate of the packs resting squarely on his shoulders, Julian, the Chief Enforcer, will swallow his pride to seek out the one wolf he knows can help them all, the one who seems to know all the players, who can think like them…if anyone can find the Volchitsa it’s the ghost he’s hunted for decades…

Dallas Dalton has lived on the run so long, she doesn’t really remember any other way of life. For an all too brief time, she had her daughter with her and the feeling of family until Julian got to too close once again. The damn wolf wouldn’t leave her be, no matter how much she’d sacrificed for him. Seeing him in Russia had been both a blessing and a curse, because no matter what she did, she couldn’t get him out of her system. Then he asked her for help…

Now side-by-side, the Enforcer and the Rogue will have to work together to deal with the Volchitsa once and for all, but can they keep from killing each other in the process?

READ A LITTLE, BUY THE BOOK

“Miss Dalton, there’s a procedure to these things…a custom.”
“Of course there is,” she replied, whirling to walk backwards and look at him. “There’s protocol to every interaction we have. Boring, staid, mired in way too many years of history because some overactive dominants need to have their asses kissed.”
“Are you finished?” He halted, and though his expression didn’t change, she knew she’d reached the end of the little path so she stopped, too. They were a safe distance from the pier and alone with the rocks and the sea.
Tilting her head, she considered whether she was done. “No,” she said after waiting a beat. “I think it’s important to establish where we both stand. You bark orders to total strangers and think it’s okay. I don’t listen to orders from people I don’t know, much less respect, and I definitely never kiss an ass.”
Folding his arms, Julian released a sigh. Impatience seemed to thread through his posture. Satisfied she’d found a chink in his armor, Dallas smiled.
“There, I’m done. We understand each other.”
The wolf shook his head slowly. “You are a piece of work, Dalton.”
“Maybe, but I bet you think I’m groovy now…” The tease elicited the first hint of a smile on his stone cool face.
The man had a gorgeous smile, and her tummy did a little flip. Would he play with her?
“You are something,” he said, conceding, and she resisted the urge to cheer. “Now, you’re going to listen to me or I’ll put your smart mouth on a bus back to New York with a note to your pack to keep you caged until you learn some manners.”
Dammit. So much for playing. “Boring,” she sighed. “Fine, do your worst. Give me the lecture.”
There should be a rule about stone cold foxes being stone cold meanies. Folding her arms, she met him glare for glare.
“How the hell did they let you out of your pack?”
“Because no one can keep me where I don’t want to be.” Not anymore.
It would be her mantra. She was free.
She planned to stay that way.

USA Today bestselling author, HEATHER LONG, likes long walks in the park, science fiction, superheroes, Marines, and men who aren’t douche bags. Her books are filled with heroes and heroines tangled in romance as hot as Texas summertime.

From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her stories—her characters drive the books. When she’s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family.

She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, you’re sure you’ve been friends with women just like them, you’ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.

Heather is best known for her 18-book paranormal romance series Wolves of Willow Bend, which begins:
Prequel: Wolf at Law
1: Wolf Bite
2: Caged Wolf
3: Wolf Claim
3.5: Wolf Next Door
4: Rogue Wolf
5: Bayou Wolf
6: Untamed Wolf

Heather's other fantasy romance series include the paranormal westerns Fevered Hearts starting with Marshal of Hel Dorado, Black Hill Wolves which start with What a Wolf Wants, Witches of Mane Street, Mongrels, and the forthcoming Bravo Team WOLF series.

Her contemporary romance series include: Always a Marine, Going Royal, Elite Warriors, The Love Thieves, beginning with Catch Me and Lone Star Leathernecks, beginning with Semper Fi Cowboy.

Heather is well-represented in fantasy with her superhero series Boomers, a sci-fi western called Space Cowboy Survival Guide, an urban fantasy series called the Chance Monroe Adventures, and a stand-alone ghost novel titled Haunt Me.

GHOST WOLF CHARACTER INTERVIEW
Enforcer Hadley Sexton has a lot of questions for Rogue Dallas Dalton – and this is her chance to get a few answers.

HADLEY: Thanks for grabbing a drink with me.
DALLAS:  I’d say you’re welcome but you didn’t offer me a choice.

HADLEY: It’s always better to apologize than ask for permission.
DALLAS:  A woman after my own heart.

HADLEY: Actually, I’m just here to pick your brain. You agreed to eight questions, correct?
DALLAS: I did, and now you have seven left. *lifting her drink, she took a long pull* Use them wisely.

HADLEY: You’re a smartass. I knew there was a reason I liked you. Let’s start with the simple things. Julian’s ass or his eyes?
DALLAS: *still chuckling* The man has an ass you could bounce a quarter off of—but his eyes remind me of the sea.

HADLEY: Not really a straight answer.
DALLAS:  Only answer you’re going to get. *winks*

HADLEY: What was he to you first? Friend or lover?
DALLAS: Pain in the ass—though to be fair, we weren’t the best suited to friendship.

HADLEY: What made you two work?
DALLAS: We didn’t work or did you not notice that?

HADLEY:You two were tight—you have your own language—you know things about him no one else does. So what made that work?
DALLAS: I’m not afraid of him and I know how to listen.

HADLEY: Huh, nice…now for the question I have to know the answer to—what was up with all the sitting rooms?
DALLAS: *laughing* Options…options for a gilded cage.

HADLEY: And the set miniatures? Yours or his?
DALLAS: Between us girls—?

HADLEY: Of course. I’m dying to know.
DALLAS: Strip Risk. *she waggled her eyebrows*

HADLEY: No. Shit. Seriously?
DALLAS: No. You’ll be wondering won’t you.

HADLEY:You’re killing me.
DALLAS: Last question…make it worth this.

HADLEY: If you could go back, and get a do-over—would you?
DALLAS: Nope. I wouldn’t change a single thing. Our lives are a product of our choices—change even one and it could change everything.

HADLEY’S GOTTA ASK: What’s on your bucket list?
DALLAS GOTTA ANSWER:   *smiling* Everything…

A laughing couple escaped out the doors as they continued their dancing. Then the male picked his companion up and kissed her. The scent of their passion twined and Lesley-Anne allowed herself a smile. The couple didn’t carry the promise of mating in their scent, but they were young and having fun. That was all that mattered.
Another couple slipped out the doors, both laughing and giggling like children. They hesitated when they saw her, but the male gave her a self-conscious grin followed by an incongruous wink before tugging the woman away. Lesley-Anne smiled again—not all wolves wanted to know if they were possibly mates, so she tended to keep what she knew to herself.
She had been known in the past to warn a wolf who seemed to be getting too attached, if only to prevent them from heartbreak later. The desire for a mate didn’t always result in a happily ever after for all parties, particularly if they wanted it too badly.
She lifted her mask and wiped away some of the sweat from around her eyes. Fortunately, she didn’t favor a lot of heavy cosmetics or this weather would’ve already eaten half her makeup. She’d just got it back into place when the doors opened again. A rush of sound and light and scent lashed out. Every nerve in her body electrified. Not only did she scent mate potential…
She scented hers.
Not possible.
Pivoting, she found a tall, lean wolf studying her as he made his way outside, drink in hand. Like so many of the men at the party, he was dressed in a full tux and tails. It might surprise some to know that when Delta Crescent dressed up, they did it right. Even the alpha’s mate cut a dashing figure in his suit, and his vest and tie had been designed to match the alpha’s stunning red dress. They made such a striking couple.
The male continued to approach, and Lesley-Anne lowered her gaze a fraction. Her wolf rose within her,  unexpected in her interest. The last thing she wanted was to leap on the unsuspecting approaching wolf. A matchmaker was a tracker with a finely attuned sense of smell—one which detected certain notes in body chemistry. Although, in Lesley-Anne’s case, it also had something to do with her degree in psychology.
“Running away already?” The husky masculine voice wrapped around her like a leash seeking purchase.
“Hardly.” She lifted her drink. “I came out to cool off and have a drink. You?”
“I came looking for you.” What a pity he delivered the hope-inspiring-line with such practiced ease. Even knowing he possessed all the right scent markers, declaring him her potential, the smoothness with which he declared he’d come in search of her suggested his goal was more a warm body for the night rather than a heart seeking shelter.
“I see. It doesn’t seem as though you have to look very hard.” She didn’t bother to disguise the challenge in her voice. She didn’t want an operator, and while wolves might be highly charged and very sexual creatures, it didn’t mean she had to accept whatever life had to offer. Mate potential didn’t mean mate acceptance.
“How do you know I haven’t searched the whole of the bayou for you?” Playful flirtation seemed to shimmer within every syllable.
“Because there’s not a speck of dirt on your very shiny shoes.” He was lucky she didn’t snort in his face.
He chuckled then tugged off his filigreed mask. Oh, she could have wished he hadn’t done that. Hugo Ferrar. Really? She wanted to take her wolf out back and shake it. Hugo Ferrar was a Hound, second only to Jerome, and exceptionally well known in the pack—both for his reputation as a fighter as well as a lover.

SPACE COWBOY SURVIVAL GUIDE
First in the series

Rule #42 – Don’t be a hero. Heroes do shit for free and get themselves killed. It’s a lose-lose proposition.

From his leather Stetson to his long coat and choice of weapons, Shaw Sullivan is just a space cowboy who lives by his own code. A loner by choice, he accepted the contract to conduct a stellar census under duress…it was the only way to save his family’s ranch.

Sullivan has four years to complete the mission, and he has zero intentions of letting anything get in his way least of all a desperate woman who wants to hire him to be a hero.

Warning: This novel is not a romance. It’s a wild, space romp with some rough and tumble characters who aren’t all that likable most days.
