JULIE MILLER

KANSAS CITY COWBOY
The Precinct: TASK FORCE

FROM HIS HAT TO HIS BOOTS, THIS COP WAS ALL COWBOY

For small-town sheriff Boone Harrison, the investigation into a serial rapist turned killer is painfully personal. Boone's priority is to find the coward who murdered his sister. But to accomplish that, he'll have to work with Dr. Kate Kilpatrick, a secretive woman whose striking beauty and kind heart just may be the lawman's undoing....

Forensic psychologist Kate Kilpatrick was wrong about Sheriff Harrison. He's smarter and more resourceful than she'd given him credit for-and entirely too attractive. In their combined grief, Kate finds something she didn't even know she needed: protection. Because when the Rose Red Rapist sets his sights on Kate, she'll need more than the power of the badge to save her. She'll need her very own cowboy.

Can you tell us about a real-life hero you’ve met?
JULIE: My dad, the veteran Marine.  I miss him.  Even after he retired from the Corps, he lived as a Marine—patriotic, protective, honorable—yet it was just a man doing his job.  And yes, he had the jarhead haircut his entire life.

What or who inspired the hero for KANSAS CITY COWBOY?
JULIE: The Magnificent Seven movie and TV show have always been my favorite cowboy inspiration. But his horse is Ben Cartwright’s buckskin off Bonanza.

Is there a hero you’re just dying to write about for Intrigue?
JULIE: I’m excited about getting to write Pike Taylor’s story in an upcoming Precinct: Task Force book.  He’s a K-9 cop, so that research has been so interesting (and I love dogs).  Plus, he’s my favorite type of hero—the big, brawny protector type.

What’s your favorite way you’ve killed someone (in your books of course)?
JULIE: Usually, I love a good explosion <g>. But in the book I’m writing now I used a simple brick as the murder weapon and found it really helped shape this particular villain.

What’s your favorite thing about the Harlequin Party?
JULIE: There’s just…so much.  Good food, wonderful friends, interesting things to do, fun decorations, nice honors awarded to authors.  But I think my favorite thing is the dancing!

Where are some unusual places your characters have ‘made out’?
JULIE: In a cave.  During a chess game.  In a museum.  On a motorcycle.

GOTTA ASK: If you had to choose a movie to describe KANSAS CITY COWBOY, which would it be?
JULIE’S GOTTA ANSWER:  This is hard!  Maybe the closest thing plot-wise would be CROCODILE DUNDEE? You know, instinctively smart country boy in the big city.  But not a comedy and the hero isn’t an Aussie.  My hero has a lot of Chris from THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, too.  That sort of tortured, weight-of-the-world-on-his-shoulders, leader and protector.

  1. We might take another mini road trip upstate for the weekend. I'm looking forward to it mainly because I won't be the one driving.

    1. That's how we've had to do our "vacation" this summer. Our schedules are so busy, that we've taken a couple of weekend road trips. They've been fun and nice. (although I do miss the big family vacation--I think it's the dedicated time with family I'm missing)

  2. Just did it yesterday. Held a potluck party for over 40 people. It was fun ... I'd do it again in a heart beat ... at least my house is really really clean now ... and I'm exhausted. Usually I do up the dishes that night, but last night I filled the dishwasher and went to bed, not even soaking the crockpots and roasting pans. Today's another day....

    1. 40 people?!! Wow, that's a lot of party guests. I'd fall into bed and let the dishes wait until tomorrow, too.

That's a great feeling to have the house so clean, though, isn't it? That's when mine usually gets a good cleaning--when company's coming.

I bet everyone had a grand time!

  3. Hey Julie and welcome back to GLIAS.

Fun stuff? We have a trip planned every month. July's was back home to Tim's family last week. And Laney, we had a housefull while family from up north slept over while they were traveling. Glad to be normal today. I'm hoping only to travel on the bike this week.

Hubby leaves again soon. Gotta talk him into another local ride while it's not so hot. (yes, I said "not so hot" LOL We're only supposed to get to 92 today...and for mid-July that's unheard of.)

  9. Loves 2 Read Romance - LauraJuly 15, 2012 at 4:06 PM

I am planning on relaxing or trying to. With my brother's wedding less than 100 days away I know things are going to get crazy. At least I found my dress!! We are planning a trip to Houston in Aug to get things set for the rehearsal dinner and cake tasting along with looking for my mom's dress. So besides the wedding my plan is to enjoy some new books. I can't wait to get a copy of Kansas City Cowboy I know I have mentioned this to Julie before but I just love the cover of this book!!

    1. Hey, Laura--weddings can be a big, time-consuming deal. I was just the aunt with my niece's wedding earlier this summer, but I know my brother and sister-in-law put in a lot of work to make it the beautiful, fun event it was. Good luck!

And yeah, KANSAS CITY COWBOY is one of my favorite covers, too!

    1. I went to a library book sale this summer and came home with lots of books to read. Either they were ones I'd missed when they came out or they're from out-of-print lines, etc. I'm excited to go on a reading binge (probably sometime in September) when I'm done with my book, galleys and proposal that are all due this month!
