Elle James aka Myla Jackson spent twenty years livin' and lovin' in South Texas, ranching horses, cattle, goats, ostriches and emus. A former IT professional, Elle is proud to be writing full-time, penning intrigues and paranormal adventures that keep her readers on the edge of their seats. HEATHER: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

ELLE: I can't pick just one! I've always been a big fan of musicals, MY FAIR LADY and SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS will always be near and dear to my heart. I love, love, loved AVATAR. I think because my favorite color is blue (hehe), oh and it has a great storyline. And lately, I totally got into THE AVENGERS! Thor melted my bones, Iron Man has such great attitude, Captain America was a military man and Hulk? OMG, he cracked me up when he punched Thor...

HEATHER: How often to you get lost in a story?

ELLE:Because I have two pen names, I'm writing every minute of the day, or so it seems. I rarely have time to read. Lately, I read the advance readers copy of a great story coming out by my sister Delilah Devlin. It's a paranormal, Memphis cop story called SHATTERED SOULS. I couldn't put it down and lost two days of writing because I was lost in the story!

HEATHER: What’s your favorite “love” word?

ELLE:I love the word passion. It's stronger than the word love and makes me scoot to the edge of my seat when I hear or read the word. Passion can burn in one's heart for another person, an art, a way of life. Love is soft and fuzzy. Passion is hard, raging and intense. I like the intensity.

HEATHER: If you couldn’t be a writer anymore, what profession would you take up?

ELLE:I'd take up graphic art. I think it's the creative side of me. I like making beautiful things, whether it's a story that elicits emotion or a work of art that makes you look twice. I can't paint my way out of a box, but I love creating.

HEATHER: What is something that not a lot of people know about you but you WISH more people COULD know?

ELLE:I love to brag about my most interesting job. I worked one summer as a State Park Interpretive Naturalist. I led hikes, hayrides and nature talks. One of my duties was to give a slide show in the amphitheater and talk about snakes found in the park. We had a collection of snakes I would bring out for the patrons to see and touch. They called me the Snake Lady.

HEATHER: What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing?

ELLE:I'm fortunate that I was able to quit the IT profession and write full time. I've always wanted to write, but until it paid enough, I couldn't do it full time. Now I can. I've also wanted to be a published author. I published my first book in 2005 and now have many books in print and in several foreign languages. I am able to travel a lot more. In the last 7 years, I've been to Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Guam, Virgin Islands, Italy, England, Ireland, Canada, Alaska and many states and provinces getting to and from Alaska on a 5-week trip. I count myself fortunate and think that my writing has given me the opportunities to go different places as well as some of the income needed to get there.

HEATHER: Dog person or cat person?

ELLE:I love both. But I have to think that the nurturer in me loves dogs more. They are a lot needier than cats and I need to be needed. As my children grew up and moved away, I found that I needed surrogate children. I have a Yorkie and a Malti-poo that are now my "children." Gotta love em!

HEATHER: How much money does it take to be happy?

ELLE:Just enough to allow me to travel. I don't have to travel first class and it doesn't always have to be to a foreign country. I love to explore different places and the people are always what makes the places so much fun and interesting. I don't have to live in a big expensive house, as long as I have a space for my office so that I can keep writing and weaving magical stories to get lost in.

HEATHER’S GOTTA ASK – ELLE’S GOTTA ANSWER J

HEATHER: What draws you to strong, earthy women and men?

ELLE: I grew up as a military brat. My dad wore a uniform every day but his roots were as a poor farm boy from Arkansas. I grew up the scrappy 3rd child of 4, living on Air Force Bases. We never knew a dull moment. We left the house practically at sunrise and didn't return until dark. If we did, mom was sure to put us to work. We hiked, biked, rode horses, swam and lived life to the fullest. Much of that time was spent in Texas, thus it appears as a setting in many of my books. When my father retired, we landed back in Arkansas on a small farm where we raised cows, chickens and dogs. We rode horses, canoed the rivers and swam in the lakes. More of a tomboy, I connect with women who aren't afraid to lift a bale of hay or ride the ornery horse. I like men with calloused hands and a strong work ethic and a way with gentling high-spirited creatures.

We had some technical difficulties the first time Danita Cahill came to visit, so today, I'm reposting her interview for those of you who missed it.

ABOUT DANITA CAHILL

Danita Cahill is a freelance writer and photographer. She lives in the Pacific NW on a small farm with her husband, two sons and their animals – a horse, several cats and guinea pigs, a herd of alpacas, and two dogs – neither of which has red eyes. Danita stays busy taking photographs, writing, and trying to keep up with her young sons. She’s currently working on various newspaper and magazine assignments and her next book.

MAUREEN:  What’s your favorite holiday?

DANITA:  I feel like I should say Thanksgiving since the bulk of Mist takes place the day before Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving Day. But the story does extend through Christmas, which is actually my favorite holiday. I like the memories made with family at Christmas time. I like the sharing, the decorating, the baking, the good will – the whole shebang.

MAUREEN:  Where do you most like to read and how often?

DANITA:  I read every chance I get – at night in bed, while I eat lunch, before Zumba and while I’m waiting for my kids to get out of school. I try to keep up with multiple magazine and newspaper subscriptions and I’m usually reading at least two, sometimes as many as eight fiction and/or nonfiction books at a time. There’s never enough time to read everything I’d like to!

MAUREEN:  What’s your favorite kind of story to get lost in?

DANITA:  I’m an eclectic reader. I like some of everything – mysteries, horror, romance, literary novels, thrillers and all sorts of nonfiction. Guess I got that from my mom. She had Stephen King and Dean Koontz on her bookshelves next to the inspirational romances and her quilting books.

MAUREEN:  What’s the first book you remember reading?

DANITA:  The first book I remember reading was a character-driven work of fiction involving a hero named Dick, a heroine named Jane and a dog named Spot. Ha! Oh, did I ever just date myself, or what?

MAUREEN:  Um, I remember Dick and Jane and Spot, too. :) Who was your favorite teacher in grade school? Why?

DANITA:  Mrs. Cowen, my fifth-grade teacher was one of my favorites. She understood my love of animals, especially horses – which is all I wanted to read about back then. When I won the class spelling bee, she gave me a horse statue that was hers when she was a horse-loving young girl. I still have it packed away around here somewhere.

MAUREEN:  Do you believe in ghosts?

DANITA:  Yes, I think I do believe in ghosts. Dianne Harris, the heroine of Mist is assisted by the ghost of her dead grandmother.

MAUREEN:  What’s next for you as an author?

DANITA:  You know how I told you I read several books at a time? Well, I’m consecutively working on several books, too. I’m within watermelon-seed-spitting distance of finishing a paranormal romance novella Daisies are True. I’m also working on a couple of memoirs: Confessions of a Country Girl, Inspirational Stories of Growing up Rural, and True Stories of Miracles, Visions and Other Amazing Things. I hope to release at least two of those books in 2013.

MAUREEN:  What’s your favorite hobby?

DANITA:  Do I have to pick just one? Ha! I love to read and write, of course. But I also like to hike in scenic places, taking photographs as I go. Maybe that’s not exactly hiking – more like rambling with a camera. I also enjoy gardening (I’m a master gardener), spending time with my family, and hanging out with my alpacas. They are such endearing animals, each one a character and each unique. I mean, just look at that face, would you? What’s not to love? This is Glory’s Hallelujah.

MAUREEN:  Cats or dogs?

DANITA:  I like both cats and dogs, for different reasons. Cats love you on their own terms. Dogs love you more than they love themselves. Unless they are evil, red-eyed dogs of course! Luckily, ours are both sweet, loveable dogs with warm, friendly, brown eyes. This is Maggie our yellow lab and Zip, our Border collie pup.

MAUREEN:  What sound or noise do you love?

DANITA:  My favorite sounds have got to be birds singing when the sun breaks through the clouds after a down pour (I live in Oregon. We have a lot of downpours) and my children’s laughter.

MAUREEN:  What’s your favorite kid joke?

DANITA:  Knock knock. Who’s there? Dwayne. Dwayne who? Dwayne the bathtub, I’m dwowning. I know, groan right? But it makes my kids laugh and you know how I love that sound.

MAUREEN:  MIST is a thriller. What really scares you?

DANITA:  Pure evil, which is what the red-eyed dogs in Mist are – or are they really dogs at all? The idea for the book came from a very frightening nightmare. The good thing is – and we all know this – love conquers evil.

Get Lost in a Story Readers, today, I am pleased to  host the prolific talent, Cindi Madsen.  Cindi writes a everything from contemporary, young adult, paranormal. . .but as Cindi likes to say, she includes romance because romance rocks the house!  Please welcome Cindi Madsen to Get Lost in a Story!

Liv comes out of a coma with no memory of her past and two distinct, warring voices inside her head. Nothing, not even her reflection, seems familiar. DONNELL:  Hi, Cindi;  First question:  Do you prefer big cities or small towns?

CINDI: I grew up in a small town & I love it there. But I also love living in a city. So hard choice. I think city but visiting the ranch often is perfect, which is what I do now.

DONNELL:  Favorite room in your house.

CINDI: family room with the giant TV my husband convinced me to get & I now love it.

DONNELL:  Where will we find you if you’re not writing?

CINDI:  Watching TV or movies with my husband or out to eat with family or friends

DONNELL:  Are you athletic?

CINDI: hahaha. In grade school, I could care less about athletics & I was slow & awful at sports. I got into dancing in high school & that suited me much better. Now I force myself to run. So that’s the long way of saying I’m reluctantly athletic, but don’t throw me the ball if you’re looking for a win.

DONNELL:  I think you’re partial  to Young Adult.  But is it your favorite genre?

CINDI: I actually like both young adult and adult, depending on my mood. Whatever I read these days, though, the romantic element needs to be strong. I’ve always loved a good mystery. In high school, when the girls in my class were reading Sweet Valley High books, I was reading novels about serial killers (on the downlow, because I knew my mom wouldn’t want me to read them)

DONNELL:  What motivates you?  What makes you drag your feet?

CINDI: Mountain Dew motivates me. I also blast the playlist I made for my book while writing. And if I have a book or show I want to watch, I’ll tell myself I can after I get my word count for the day. Snowy days make me drag my feet, and I’m also slightly zombie-ish before 10 am, because I usually stay up waaaay too late.

DONNELL:  What’s in your refrigerator right now?

CINDI: Mountain Dew, apples and oranges, and milk—my family goes through 6 gallons a week, so I have to constantly buy it.

DONNELL:  Here’s a tough one for you – you might need a calculator.  How many shoes do you have in your closet?

CINDI: If I went to count I probably wouldn’t get my word count and errands done for the day. Lol! Last time I organized my closet it was around 50. I’d guess it’s probably closer to 60 now. What can I say, I really, really LOVE shoes, especially tall heels and awesome boots.

DONNELL:  Would you consider yourself organized?

CINDI:  hahaha. If organized means I can usually find my laptop, then sure. I have to set alerts in my phone for everything or I forget, so that saves me from being too late. I live in fear that people will stop by unexpectedly & see the state of madness my house is usually in.

DONNELL:  What’s your proudest accomplishment?

CINDI: my kids. They’re good, sweet kids and they make me laugh. Love them like crazy.

DONNELL:  If you could meet anyone, past or present, who would it be, and why?

CINDI: Hmmm. I think I’d go with Susan B. Anthony. Or Mary Shelley. Yes, I’m cheating and picking both because it’s too hard to pick between them. And if we’re going for more-shallow present day option, I’d pick Jared Leto, because, well Google him and see for yourself. The guy is super hot AND in a band. (See, now I super cheated with three answers.)
