4 Stars from RT Book Reviews!

A stolen kiss from a spy!

Working undercover for the government, Bartholomew Dyer must expose a nefarious plot to make Napoleon the ruler of England! He needs access to the highest echelons of Society to find those involved, so he's forced to enlist the help of the woman who jilted him five years ago—Moira, Lady Rexford.

Moira's widowed yet still as captivating as ever, and Bart's determined not to succumb to her charms a second time. But, as they race against time, Bart suspects it's not their lives at greatest risk—it's their hearts…

Conspiracy and Intrigue in Regency England, Oh My!

Courting Danger with Mr. Dyer is about Lady Moira Rexford, and spymaster Bartholomew Dyer rediscovering their love while in a race against time to stop a plot to place Napoleon on the British throne. To understand how spying worked in the past, and to create historically appropriate intruige for this story, I drew on a number of past conspircies against the British government, and especially how they were foiled. The two main conspiracies I researched were The Gunpowder Plot and the Cato Street Conspiracy.

The 1605 Gunpowder Plot is one of the most well known plots against the throne and has led to the tradition of Bonfire Night when people gather on November 5th to light bonfires and burn Guy Fawkes in effigy. Remember, remember the 5th of November! The plot saw Guy Fawkes and his cohorts attempt to blow up Parliament in order to kill protestant King James I and place his catholic daughter on the throne. The plot was uncovered when an anonymous letter was sent to a member of Parliament warning him not to attend. The letter raised the alarm and an investigation was launched, the stores of gunpowder under the Houses of Parliament were found, and the conspirators were caught, tried and executed. While researching this plot, I learned that gunpowder, especially historic mixtures, could decay over time with the saltpeter, sulfer and charcoal separating and making the gunpowder useless. After the gunpowder was discovered under Parliament, it was revealed that a lot of it had decayed. This has led many to question how successful the plot would have been if the conspirators had never been caught. We will never know,  but learning a great deal about historic gunpowder helped me craft some of the Courting Danger with Mr. Dyer scenes.

A lesser known plot that I researched for Courting Danger with Mr. Dyer is the Cato Street Conspiracy. This took place in 1820 when a number of radicals who met in a house in Cato Street hatched a plan to assasinate the entire cabinet while the cabinet dined at Lord Harrowby’s. The radicals hoped the murder of the cabinet would throw the government into chaos and lead to uprisings and revolts. The plot was foiled, and the conspirators were either executed or transported to Australia. Although this conspiracy takes place later than when Courting Danger with Mr. Dyer is set, and it doesn’t invole Napoleon, I drew on some of the elements of the plot to craft my story. As to which elements those are, you will have to read Courting Danger with Mr. Dyer to find out.

London—1813
‘You must do it.’ Bartholomew Dyer banged Frederick Chambers, Fifth Earl of Fallworth, hard against the wall, trying to knock the fight back into him. The unprovoked swing the Earl had taken at Bart gave him hope it could be done. ‘We need you.’
‘I can’t, don’t you understand?’ Freddy growled, fingers biting into Bart’s forearms. ‘I’ve given enough. I won’t give any more.’
‘Let go of him.’ The lady behind him punctuated her command by cocking a pistol hammer.
Damn. Bart cursed under his breath. She’d just made the weapon more dangerous. If she wasn’t competent with it, the ball would tear through him and the Earl under his elbow.
Bart took his arm off Lord Fallworth’s chest and stepped back.
‘Moira, it’s not what you think.’ Lord Fallworth choked as he leaned away from the wall and tried to wave his sister off.
Bart ground his teeth at the mention of Lady Rexford and the way it made his neck, and something much lower down, tense. A maid or the elderly aunt would have been preferable to Lord Fallworth’s sister, and his one-time fiancée, having stumbled in on them. The young Dowager Countess of Rexford was as stunning as she was a complication Bart didn’t need.

‘Then what is it?’ She kept the pistol pointed at Bart’s chest and her beautiful green eyes fixed on his. She’d changed since he’d last seen her five years ago when she’d been a young lady new to London and he an ex-soldier beginning his career as a barrister. The innocent, uncertain tilt of her head was gone, replaced by a confidence he imagined widowhood and the deaths of her father and sister-in-law must have given her. It made her sharp cheekbones set in an oval face and framed by blonde hair more striking and more tempting. He knew better than to fall for it. He had no desire to hear again from her family how he wasn’t good enough for her or to have his official duties curtailed by her incorrect reading of this situation.
Bart bent into a bow. ‘Good evening, Lady Rexford. It’s a pleasure to see you again.’
‘I can’t say the same, Mr Dyer. If you weren’t one of the most celebrated barristers in England with as many magistrates in awe of you as the public, I’d put a ball through you and end your scourge on this house.’
He opened his arms to increase the size of her target. ‘Why not take the chance?’
She frowned at his defiance, the disapproving yet intriguing downturn of her mouth tempered by the still-raised weapon. ‘Since I have no desire to be hanged for murder, I demand you leave at once and never return.’
Any other day her order would have been charming. This morning it was merely irritating. ‘Your aunt used to make the same request and it didn’t work.’
‘I’d like to think I’m a touch more persuasive.’ She nodded at the still-raised pistol.
He admired her desire to protect her brother, even if it was woefully misguided. However, what had brought him here in defiance of her widowed aunt’s dictates was far more important than his or anyone else’s life.
‘Moira, it’s all right. Leave us be, we have business to discuss.’ Lord Fallworth took up his drink and drained it.
‘What business? Which gaming hell to visit?’ she challenged. ‘Don’t think Aunt Agatha didn’t write to me about what you got up to with Mr Dyer when you were in London two years ago. I won’t have you ruining yourself again a mere week after we’ve returned to town.’
Bart suppressed a growl of irritation. If Lady Rexford knew the real motives behind those nights out, she’d lower the pistol, throw her arms around his neck and thank him for his service to their country.
‘Freddy, I won’t leave you to the influences of a man like this.’ Lady Rexford waved her free hand at Bart. ‘Not with you already so vulnerable since Helena’s—’
‘You needn’t say it.’ Lord Fallworth snatched up the brandy decanter and refilled his glass.
Bart opened his mouth to tell Lady Rexford to step out of things she didn’t understand, then closed it again. With her brother slipping into a liquor-induced fog, his suitability for this mission waned while Lady Rexford’s possible involvement played on him like a hunch. She stood straight, one foot in front of the other to make her gown drape across her shapely thigh. The firm set of her full lips beneath eyes as focused as a fox’s made him take more notice of her than the pistol or her reluctant brother. No one would suspect a woman. Bart knew better.

London, 1825

‘You’re undressed! Why are you not up already? It’s past noon!’ Jane waved her hand from the top of Jasper’s head to the rippled and exposed stomach, and the dark line of hair leading her gaze even lower. She was already out of breath from running up the Chartons’ massive front stairs, but catching Jasper in his bedroom without his shirt was suffocating. His toned chest tinged with a honey hint of a tan nearly knocked her away from the closed door. She’d known Jasper Charton and his family her entire life. But she never thought she’d see quite this much of him.
‘I wasn’t expecting company.’ Jasper wiped the last of the very musky and, if she was not mistaken by the scent, expensive shaving soap from his face and haphazardly hung the towel on the washstand bar. He made no move to take up the rumpled shirt sagging over the foot of the bed, and perched one fist on his hip as though it was every day an unmarried young lady burst into his bedroom unannounced. ‘What are you doing up here?’
‘We must speak about the building.’ She fiddled with the key in the lock of the door but her shaking hand wouldn’t co-operate and she gave up.
Concentrate! This was no time to be distracted. With her brother and Mr Charton downstairs, and Mrs Charton distracted by one of her grandchildren, Jane had precious little time alone with Jasper. ‘I have a plan for it, but I need your help, as a friend. We’re still friends, aren’t we?’
His eyebrows rose in surprise. ‘Even after what Milton did to you?’
‘You had nothing to do with it, and he isn’t pertinent to the matter I wish to discuss today.’ Actually, proving to everyone, including herself, she could catch a husband was very much a part of this, but he didn’t need to know it.
He cocked one eyebrow. ‘You want to talk business, in my room, alone?’
She picked up one of the pair of diamond cufflinks in the dish on the table beside her, then put it down. It did seem foolish when he pointed it out, but speaking here was better than trying to whisper downstairs and risking someone overhearing their negotiations. For this to work, everyone, including Philip, must believe they were marrying for the right reason. ‘Of course. We have privacy.’
‘Which makes me wonder if business is really all you want?’ With a wicked smile he slipped the top button of his fall through its hole. He was teasing her as he used to do and the easy familiarity of their old friendship slid between them. It was more potent than the pulling of her pigtails and she adjusted the top of her spencer, breathless once more as she stared at his long fingers on the button, waiting to see what he might reveal. Offering him her innocence wasn’t an unpleasant bargaining chip, especially since she was dying to finally experience the deed she’d heard Jasper’s sister whispering about at so many parties. If she got with child it would certainly force the matter.

Read an Excerpt from Studio Relations:

Eve grabbed her bouquet and hurried to join Vivien. “I wouldn’t miss this for the world.”
“I’m glad someone is excited about my wedding.”
“At least you’re getting the chance to walk down the aisle. That’s more than some of us can say.”
They stopped at Earl’s office door, and Vivien was about to pull it open when Earl pushed through, hastily closing it behind him. Vivien caught a glimpse of a small wedding cake set up in the corner but nothing else before the door swung closed.
“You can’t come in. It’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding.”
Eve tossed Vivien an “I told you so” look, and Vivien rolled her eyes.
“Can we just get this over with?”
“Yes,” Earl said with an uncharacteristic gleam in his eye. If she didn’t know him better, she’d say he was excited about the wedding. It was probably only the thrill of pulling off this ridiculous ruse on such short notice. “Margot, you go on inside, and Lou will tell you where to stand. Dave, you stay here.”
Margot nodded, opening the door. Vivien tried to get a peek inside, but Earl drew her off to the side.
“You’ll see everything soon enough,” he said. “Now, Judge Paxton has granted us the license and backdated it. He’ll also be the one to give you the annulment once it’s done.”
“He’s going to annul it on what grounds?”
Earl went red around the ears and—for the first time ever, she thought—looked a little embarrassed. “Nonconsummation.”
“Oh.” Vivien was surprised Weston had agreed to it. She guessed it was as good an excuse as any. “Well, that should be easy enough to guarantee.”
Eve choked out a laugh behind Earl, and he whirled around to face her.
“What?” he demanded.
Eve wiped away a small tear. “I’m just so excited to see Vivien getting married,” she gushed, barely able to hold back her laughter.
“All right, enough jokes, ladies,” Earl snapped before turning back to Vivien. “After the ceremony, we’ll take a few pictures of you and Weston cutting the cake, and Lou will make sure the story and the pictures are on the front page of the evening papers, tomorrow’s morning editions, and the trades. Tonight you’ll go to Weston’s.”
“Wait—what do you mean, go to Weston’s?”
“You’re moving in with him. I’ve arranged for your things to be taken over to his house so you can get ready for work tomorrow without any trouble.”
“I’m going to live with Weston?”
“Where did you think you were going to live?”
She hadn’t actually thought about it until just now. “At my house.”
“A married woman can’t live in her own house. It’s unheard of.”
“I can’t live with him.”
“You’ll have to if you want it to look real.”
“What does Weston think of this little arrangement?”
“He’s fine with it.”
“Well, I’m not.”
“No time to discuss it now. Come on, I’ll walk you down the aisle.” Earl offered her his arm, and she took it, still stunned by this latest revelation.
Live with Weston. Yes, it made sense, but the idea of being in close contact with him for who knows how long made her nervous. She might be able to act through today, but she wasn’t a good enough actress to get through the next six weeks and make it convincing. The flowers in her hand started to shake as she realized she no longer had a choice in the matter.
“No reason for you to be nervous.” Earl patted her arm reassuringly.
“Easy for you to say.” She was about to give the most award-winning performance of her career, only nobody outside of Earl’s office would ever know it.

An Excerpt from A Too Convenient Marriage

London—May 1818

Justin slammed the chaise door shut and slumped against the squabs. It galled him to think she'd waited until he'd proposed to reveal her true impression of him, though he supposed it was better now than after the parson's mousetrap was sprung. Justin roughly stuffed his shirt back in his breeches and did up the fall, not bothering to button his coat or redo his cravat. Outside, the excited chatter of ladies and gentlemen passing too close to the chaise as they filed into the gardens filled the air.

Then the door swung open. He jerked upright, thinking Helena had come back, but it wasn't her.

A stunning woman with eyes the colour of the emeralds he'd once handled as collateral fixed her gaze on him, not with the coy calculation of a vixen, but determination. She opened her full lips as if to say something, then changed her mind, pressing them tight together. Gold earrings swung from the small lobes as she raised her foot to step inside the chaise, then paused, as she took in his partial undress and began to back away. Male voices outside the carriage caught her attention and, in a sweep of chestnut curls, she looked to the sound of the noise, then climbed inside and pulled the door shut behind her.

"Drive away, at once,"" she commanded, pressing herself against the squabs and out of view of the window.

'

"No." Justin pushed open the door, inviting her to leave. Whatever nuisance this was, he wasn't in the mood for it, no matter how pretty it might be.

"Please, you must." She leaned out of the chaise to pull the door closed, bringing her face much too close to his. A few freckles dotted her nose and her eyelashes were thick and dark above her vivid eyes. She licked her lips nervously, making the red buds glisten in the low light. Her jasmine perfume encircled him like the cool night slipping in through the open door. She was tempting, but she was trouble, he could feel it.

'

"I've had enough female companionship for one night and don't intend to pay for more.'"

She closed the door and sat up across from him with unwarranted indignity. "I don't want your money, or anything else.'

She waved a bare hand at him, making the gold bracelet adorning her wrist slide down.

"

"Then what do you want?" He dropped his elbow on the sill of the window and touched his fingers to his chin, more intrigued than annoyed. She wasn't dressed in the flamboyant colours of the night birds, but in a silhouette of shimmering green material which hugged her high breasts, the tops of which rose in lush half-circles above the bodice.

"To be away from here, as fast as possible." She could barely sit still, but still he didn't give the order to the driver.

"Why?"

"It's none of your business." The irritation mingling with anxiety in her eyes made them sparkle even brighter.

He levelled one finger at her. "You're in my carriage, so I think it is my business. Besides, you don't strike me as the kind of woman whose family approves of her jumping in a strange man's vehicle."

She glanced out of the window, a new panic dimming the slight sweep of pink across her fine nose. "You don't know the half of it."

"Enlighten me. I have nothing else to do this evening."

Get Lost in Georgie Lee's A Debt Paid in Marriage

England, 1817

My father and mother worked hard for more than two decades to build a thriving draper business. My father’s death and my uncle’s interference ruined it all in less than two years. When Uncle Robert returned from his many years in the navy, my father had been glad to take him on in the shop. My mother and I weren’t so thrilled. My father saw the good in everyone and he wanted to believe his younger brother was still the boy he’d once looked after. Uncle Robert wasn’t. He was a selfish man only interested in his own pleasure. The sicker my father grew, the more Uncle Robert took over despite my objections and my determination to run the shop. When Uncle Robert couldn’t directly undermine me, he’d do it in more subtle ways by stealing inventory and selling it to pay for drinks or nights at Moll Topp’s. By then father was too ill to do anything about it and mother, after she broke her leg, couldn’t do much either to stop Uncle Robert. Then father died.

I tried to maintain the business, but the debts began to mount, thanks to my uncle’s spending. We were forced to move into successively cheaper lodgings in worse sections of London. Now we’re in Seven Dials, cold, hungry and on the verge of sinking even lower. Until this morning, I’d still held out hope of using the remaining inventory to rebuild the business and keep me and my mother from slipping into complete poverty. Then Uncle Robert dashed it all when he told me the inventory was gone. He’d put it up as collateral for a loan from Philip Rathbone, then wasted the money gambling.

Uncle Robert might have given up on the business and me and mother, but I haven’t. I’ll simply talk to Mr. Rathbone, explain my plan for rebuilding the business and hope I can make a convincing argument for why he should give back the inventory and extend the loan. If my words and my plan aren’t enough to convince him, then maybe the pistol will be. It has to be. Life on the streets is too horrible to contemplate. I don’t know much about how to use the rusty old pistol, my uncle’s weapon from the Navy, but I know enough to pull the trigger. I don’t intend to kill Mr. Rathbone, after all I can’t rebuild a business or take care of my mother from jail, but I won’t see us turned out into the streets to face who knows what humiliations. I hope Mr. Rathbone is a reasonable man. I don’t know what I’ll do if he isn’t.  ~ Laura Townsend

A marriage of convenience may be Laura's chance to reclaim her future, but she won't settle for anything less than true passion. Can she hope to find it in Philip's arms?

Being a merchant in Regency era England was tough. The hours were long, the work hard, thieves a nuisance and the chances of falling into bankruptcy high. However, being a merchant offered many people and families a comfortable life. If you were to try your hand at a Regency era business, what would it be? I think I would be a bookseller. I’d love to read the inventory and first editions of Jane Austen of Byron. Let me know what kind of merchant you might be in the comments below.

Also, anyone who signs up for my newsletter will be entered into a drawing to win an ebook copy of my second Harlequin Historical, Rescued from Ruin. This is the book where Philip Rathbone makes his first appearance. Follow the link http://bit.ly/1uzeNCJ  to sign up and then leave a comment below to let me know you did it.

Get Lost in The Courtesan's Book of Secrets…

From the diary of Cornelia, Comtesse de Vane.
England, 1803

Affection died with my mother. My father, a minor country baronet, didn’t want me because I wasn’t a boy, so he found himself a second wife who gave him what he wanted. Then he died, leaving me to deal with my shallow stepmother. The vapid woman would rather have a house in London so she can find another husband than take care of her own son, my half-brother, the one person I love the most in the world, the one person who loves me, except, perhaps Rafe. Or so I once thought.

Rafe Densmore, 5th Baron of Densmore, was the only man at Lord Perry’s card party who didn’t eye me like a sweet meat as I stood behind my father, before his death, watching him gamble away the last of our money. I was wearing a too small, hand-me-down dress and Rafe smiled at me, not with the lascivious look all the other men threw at me, but with one of understanding. It was as if he alone knew the humiliation I was suffering.  Then, when my father ran out of blunt and the disgusting Lord Edgemont suggested he wager me instead, it was as if the world had turned upside down. My father, the one man who should have protected me, sat there and laughed with the others as old Lord Waltenham won the game then yanked me out into the dark garden.

I cursed my father as I fought the old man’s gnarled hands, but he was stronger.  Just when I’d lost all hope, Rafe stepped from the shadows and gave Lord Waltenham a thrashing. He sent the dirty codger scurrying back into the house. I didn’t know what to think of the handsome Baron standing before me, the one with a reputation for gambling and shouldering the debts of his father. As I rubbed my aching wrists, I expected him to be like Edgemont and demand something in return for his kindness, but he had a much more interesting proposal in mind.

“Working together, we could take the Paris card rooms by storm,” he said with a smile to make my toes curl with excitement.

After the Peace of Amiens, all English society was flocking to France. I’d never been farther than Lord Parry’s estate. Rafe promised to teach me how to act and dress like a lady, an education my mother and stepmother had failed to provide. It was an escape from my wretched life, a chance to slip away from my father and reinvent myself. It tore at my heart to leave my half-brother behind, but if I won in the card rooms of Paris, perhaps I could save myself and him from a life of poverty.
The partnership Rafe and I agreed to was never about love, only business. I blossomed under his tutelage. I’d never met a man so honest, or one who looked on me as though I was a treasure and not a burden. Together, we lost ourselves in the whirl of London, and then Paris society. In the heady excitement of the card rooms, with Rafe strong, sure and confident by my side, I also lost my heart to him.

It was the biggest mistake I could have made.

If you found yourself in Cornelia’s place and had to choose between following a handsome stranger and staying where you were and hoping for the best, would you follow the stranger? Keep in mind, the Peace of Amiens failed fast, trapping English citizens in France for over ten years, and there is no guarantee that you will win at the card tables. By following the stranger, you could end up in a worse situation than before.

Commenters: Would you still follow the stranger? Let me know in the comments below.
