Blast to the Past: Protecting Their Child

Visiting Locations Makes ALL the Difference
Originally appeared on Just Romantic Suspense
Additional Pictures and Giveaway

I just mentioned to my husband that I was ready to spend the night under a gazillion stars again. I’ve never seen as many as when we traveled to West Texas to research Protecting Their Child. Thank goodness we did. There were so many details I was able to add because of that trip. AND it inspired three more books in that area: The West Texas Watchmen. Oh my gosh, the nights were so beautiful…there was so little light pollution that you could see trillions of stars. It was one of the most amazing things I’d ever seen.

I loved hiking through the Davis National Park. I don’t know why. At first glance it looks desolate, desert-like. And beautiful at the same time. But the isolation struck deep inside me as well. Sometimes it took hours to get around the mountains–a very scary thing when you’re running out of gas. The visit helped me create Kate McCrea. One of the strongest heroines I’ve been able to write about.

Where did the actual story come from? Well, about twenty-five years ago I had friends who lost a child… It’s such a sad moment. They stayed together to have two more children, but many couples don’t ever get over the loss.

Here’s a nice video someone made of the area to give you an idea.

This Excerpt from PROTECTING THEIR CHILD
is when Cord & Kate are escaping over the mountains:

“Do you think I should go first?” he asked, uncertain if it were safer to climb in front and check the path or behind her in case she fell.
She threw her gloved hands in the air. “I’m moving as fast as I can,” she said, the frustration of talking to him plain in her voice.
“That’s not why I asked.”
“Oh. Well, I don’t think there’s a good—or safe way to accomplish this, Cord.”
He looked back to the Jeep as he had every two minutes. A car dome light flickered on and off. “They found the car.”
“We should get moving. Any idea where we’re heading? Especially without our cells?”
“We couldn’t use them without being found, babe.” The familiar endearment slipped out before he caught himself.
“There’s nothing on the other side other than the state park and observatory.”
“Then that’s where we head. The observatory has satellites. People equal phones and they have a field for a helicopter to land.”
“Good grief, do you know how far that is? What’s wrong with hitching a ride to the highway?” She rolled her shoulders, swung her arms back and forth as if she was warming up for her workout video.
“Not safe. We don’t know who’s in the car—driving or holding a gun to the back of their head.”
She shared a deflated long sigh. “You’re right. I don’t want anyone else hurt. But you know we’re headed to the highest point in the mountains and there isn’t anything between here and there. No ranches, no Ranger stations and we have no cell phones.”
The heavy mist that would have eventually soaked them, turned into bigger plops on their jackets. Kate got hit in the face. All she had was that old crocheted thing she’d made with her mother many years ago. When he’d ‘borrowed’ his jeans and shirt, he should have found Kate a suitable brim to keep the rain off her.
“Better get after it, then. Wait.” He placed his favorite hat on top of her worn cap. She gave him a genuine smile with lots of white, straight teeth and didn’t argue.
Kate set a steady, careful pace. Easy for him to follow and keep watch for men who might be following. So far there weren’t any lights flashing around below. Their mud-caked boots—neither pair made for hiking—contributed to the consistent slipping, adding another layer of danger to their journey.
Within minutes they were soaked. The temperature had to be just above freezing. Cord glanced at his watch again. They’d been climbing forty-five minutes with very limited headway. Kate slowed for another short catch-her-breath minute. They’d taken several and his back was more thankful than his lungs.
“There’s too much rain to locate our position,” he shared. “Think we should use a compass?”
Even at the slow pace she’d maintained, Kate huffed a couple of times before answering. “At this point, using a compass is pointless. There’s really only one path—even though I use that term very loosely.” She put her head down to avoid the pelting rain and took another step, falling to her knee, then waving him off. “I’m okay. Better get used to it. A scraped knee will soon be the least of our worries.”
She pointed to the rock face just above them. This little trek wouldn’t get them over that. They’d have to climb.
God help him, but how had things come to this? He was the one putting his wife in harm’s way now. Ex-wife. The shrink’s voice popped into his head. She’s forever tied to me now, his own voice replied. Family. He could think of his child and his child’s mother as family.
“We can’t attempt to climb in this weather. I don’t think anyone’s following, they probably haven’t been since they didn’t know which direction we’d taken off.”
“And this isn’t the logical choice.”
“Nope.” He pointed ahead. “There enough trail to make it to the bottom? Might find a bit of an overhang for protection. If we stop here, we’re fairly exposed to the elements.”
“I can make it, Cord. Don’t worry about me.” She turned and got going.
From the looks of things, they had at least another hour and a half before hitting the base. He stretched his back, swung his arms a bit slower than Kate had. The pain shot up his spine with the first step.
“I know you can make it, superwoman,” he mumbled to himself. “It’s me I have doubts about.”

If you haven’t read The Marine’s Last Defense…I hope you’ll give it a try.
Here’s what a couple of readers thought
"If you love super-hot cowboys that kick butt and don't take numbers, this is a book for you. I enjoyed the story and re-connection of the relationship over the course of the drama. Cord and Kate touched my heart. Their story was one of heartbreak and learning to move beyond the pain. Look forward to more stories by Angi Morgan in the future..” ~Read-a-Holic

“Be prepared, because this book will keep you up late into the night reading. From the beginning to the end Cord, a Texas Ranger, and his ex-wife Kate are running for their lives. But there is another life to consider as Kate is five months pregnant and Cord is determined to keep them safe at any cost. But a drug lord wanted them dead, and Cord was haunted by his inability to protect his family in the past. Love had never been the problem between Cord and Kate, but they definitely needed to work on their communication.

In this story, Angi uses her magic of writing characters that make you care. With each obstacle and danger she throws at Kate and Cord, you wonder how in the world they will survive. Even with bullets flying, a winter storm, and being forced to climb the West Texas mountains, it may be their unspoken words that cause the most danger to their hearts. This is a must read for all those who love a good Intrigue.” ~Brenda R.

Angi's January Release

A former Marine and a pet-sitter, both with broken pasts, find healing and a future neither imagined possible. Saving a puppy, fleeing murderers, and a recognition of each other's shattered dreams, draws them together and creates a bond that goes beyond either's logic.

~4 STARS from Romantic Times Magazine
"Morgan launches the volley from the first pages so readers aren't left wondering whodunit, but they'll have to pay attention to the escalating action to keep up with the characters, who are in trouble from the get-go."

Here are a couple of pictures from our research trip from Dallas to Amarillo.

My friend Linda Castillo sent me some pictures of the snow in Amarillo two days after our visit.

Meet Jake & Bree

The MARINE'S LAST DEFENSE
on shelves now
digital available January 1

Felix Baumgartner as Jake Craig.

Meg Ryan as Sabrina Watkins.

And Dallas...as herself.

Why Felix? About the time I came up with the idea for THE MARINE'S LAST DEFENSE, Felix Baumgartner did something no man had done before. On Oct 12th, 2012, Felix broke the sound barrier wearing only a space suit--without a vehicle. Amazingly, STAR TREK 2009 did it, too. I was in a hotel room when my husband called to tell me to watch the live feed. It was so amazing seeing another piece of STAR TREK coming to life. Baumgartner is impressive. A dare devil. And a very good-looking man. Jake is not--a daredevil that is. He's running from problems he doesn't admit he has. And somehow a six month old black labrador helps him face those problems.

Why Meg? Well, why not? I love this photo of her. During THE MARINE'S LAST DEFENSE, Bree has dark hair that she's dyed because she's in hiding. I thought of Meg in JOE vs. THE VOLCANO where she portrayed several roles. Bree plays several roles in the book: heroine in jeopardy, possible con artist, dog walker, successful business entrepreneur and the only person who fills a void in Jake's soul.

And I've already shared why the pup is named Dallas. (Read more about Dallas.)

TWO CHANCES to WIN a copy: the GLIAS Christmas Wishes giveaway or my monthly drawing for a book & gift card.

I have to admit that I was completely satisfied with the young George Clooney look-alike on the cover. Had you ever heard of Felix Baumgartner before today?

The Story Behind the Story

THE MARINE'S
LAST DEFENSE

TO THE REST OF THE WORLD, SABRINA WATKINS DOESN'T EXIST. BUT TO THIS COP, SHE IS VERY MUCH ALIVE.

After escaping a killer, playing dead was the only way Sabrina Watkins could get out of Amarillo alive. Now she's living in Dallas, where no one knows her true identity. Until homicide cop Jake Craig shows up.

A half-frozen pup he finds at a crime scene brings Jake to Sabrina's doorstep. Suddenly, the former Marine is playing hero to a desperate woman on the run. Sworn to clear her name, Jake's already falling for the stunning brunette with the amethyst eyes. Can he keep her safe and turn a rescue mission into a last chance at love?

 ~ ~ ~
The Marine's Last Defense is a special book to me.  When Harlequin Intrigue had to push my TWIN books from January to May...we realized I'd go a year without a book release, so they offered me the January slot. I had to write a quick proposal and it needed to include a blizzard. I already had the concept for a murder and the location while bike riding with my husband. I just needed a plot.

The news came when we were on vacation. While chatting about possibilities (yes, sometimes my husband helps), we received a call from our dog sitter. Tim mentioned that would be a good way to hide...moving from house to house, not paying bills, etc. And just that fast I had a story.

From the get-go, I was including a black Labrador pup. I found out a couple of years ago that black animals make up 70% of all animals that have to be destroyed. I would definitely be putting a combination of my two black Labs (Dallas & Texas) into the pup I called Bear. I sold the book in January and began writing it in February. It was coming together nicely and then...

On February 13th, ten minutes before I arrived home, Dallas had a seizure resulting in a stroke and died. I was devestated. Dallas and I were very close. She was a fearless, loving dog. Abandoned on the side of the road, her rescuers thought she'd been tossed from a car. She had skin problems--didn't matter. She was blind in one eye--didn't slow her down. And she had unexplained seizures--we thought they were under control with medicine. I've loved all my dogs, but her death was so unexpected. It just hit me hard.
Even though the murder was in Dallas. I renamed the pup from Bear to Dallas in her honor. The mannerisms are all hers. I share pictures of my Labs all the time. All my on-line friends mourned Dallas. What most don't know is that we immediately adopted another 2 month-old black Lab we named Valentine. Unfortunately, she left the shelter with distemper and she was only with us 2 weeks. So I'd lost two precious pups in two weeks.

At first it was hard to write, but the book was written in a record number of days for me. I'm glad to share how Dallas became so special to my hero, Jake. And how she became his "last defense." I will never forget Dallas or precious little Valentine. And just to let you know, Tex is now 2 years old and his new playmate, Roxie, turned 1 last Monday.

"Former Marine Jake Craig is now a homicide detective who keeps people at a distance, but there's something about the pretty woman at the local coffee shop that captures his attention. Sabrina Watkins has built t a successful business walking dogs, but she's also on the run from men who want her to take the fall for their illegal activities-after she's dead. How can she get involved with a taciturn cop who could slap the cuffs any minute? Before he knows it, Jake is busy trying to keep Sabrina alive as he worries that he's falling hard for a felon. Morgan launches the volley from the first pages so readers aren't left wondering whodunit, but they'll have to pay attention to the escalating action to keep up with the characters, who are in trouble from the get-go." ~Romantic Times Magazine, 4 STARS

TEXAS WILD

MEET JEAN BRASHEARS
A letter to Rod Stewart resulting in a Cinderella 16th birthday for her daughter sowed the seeds of Jean Brashear's writing career. The USA Today bestselling romance author is a five-time RWA RITA finalist and winner of the RT Book Reviews Career Achievement Award, among others. With nearly 40 books published, Jean feels like the luckiest person on the planet, being allowed to share her bedrock belief that love is the most powerful force in the world through her stories.

THE WILD Q&A
ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?
JEAN: A LOT! Some writers say they don't read when they're writing their own books, but I would DIE if I weren't reading! I get a little desperate if I don't have a book in progress all the time.

ANGI: What’s the first book you remember reading?
JEAN: Wow. I've slept since then.;) I know I read all the L. Frank Baum books, but I was already in school by then--I really do read all the time and it's hard to recall everything!

ANGI: Can you tell us about a real-life hero you’ve met?
JEAN: That's easy. My beloved Marine, the man who always believed I'd get published even when I didn't and who has stood beside me every step of this crazy roller coaster life!

ANGI: What do you like about the hero of your book?
JEAN: Mackey is the quintessential bad boy with a heart of gold, even if he doesn't want to admit it. (A lot like the man I married!)

ANGI: Is there a playlist you’d recommend for reading your latest release?
JEAN: I wish I could listen to music when I write, but it influences me too much and gets between me and my story.

ANGI: Where do you read and how often?
JEAN: Everywhere. And all the time. (Okay, not when I'm writing, but I swear I always have a book within reach, just in case I have 5 seconds to spare. I'm really an addict.)

ANGI: What sound or noise do you love?
JEAN: A small child's belly laugh--you know, when they're really tickled about something?
ANGI: Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?
JEAN: Both!

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
JEAN: Now that's really hard--Bull Durham is a big favorite. Gladiator. Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Last of the Mohicans.

ANGI: Who’s your favorite villain?
JEAN: Alan Rickman in Die Hard is pretty fabulous. But he's a slapstick-great villain in Robin Hood, too. Then as Snape…he's really so amazing.

ANGI: What is your biggest vice?
JEAN: Chocolate. And books! (And, okay, caffeine >>grin<<)

ANGI: How is it working with hot guys and sexy women all day?
JEAN: LOVE. IT!!!! What's not to love???

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: You have some very handy dandy family trees for your characters. Are you into tracing your family roots? Any interesting stories?
JEAN'S GOTTA ANSWER: Thank you! My roots are Scottish and Irish, and I wish I had more time to pursue them back over the pond. One of my faves is from my great-grandmother, who lived on the frontier and followed her cattleman husband around while raising kids. She would be alone for days, living on the plains in a freaking TENT with small children, and she would keep them on the back of a mule while she did her chores--can you imagine? And we think life is hard!!!

Susan chats about Ford Hendrix of THREE LITTLE WORDS

When I was younger, I had a deep and abiding love for a celebrity who shall remain nameless. I wasn't the kind of girl to hang his picture in my locker or cover my room with his posters – ours was a private love. I grew up in LA, and my dad worked in TV, so I was convinced that my one true love and I would one day meet. And when we did, I didn't want him to think that I was like the millions of silly girls who had a crush on him. They didn't know him. I did. My love was real, and as soon as we met, he would recognize me as his soulmate.
Back then, I didn’t tell anyone how I felt because our love was sacred. Today, I still won’t confess his name because, frankly, I’m embarrassed. What was I thinking?! He wasn’t very smart, only marginally cute, and he ran like a girl. (There’s your one hint – he was on a TV show that required running. And he had dark hair. Two hints, but that’s it.)

In THREE LITTLE WORDS, my latest Fool’s Gold romance, Isabel Beebe knows all about embarrassing crushes, though hers wasn’t on a celebrity. When Isabel was 14, she had a crush on Ford Hendrix, her sister’s then-fiancĆ©. Worse, Ford knew how she felt because when her sister broke up with him, Isabel chased after him, sobbing, begging him not to leave. And when he joined the Navy, she wrote him dozens of long, impassioned letters.

Over the years, her letters became less like teenage love letters and more like a “Dear Diary” kind of thing, but that brings its own special twist of humiliation. Because now Ford is back in Fool’s Gold to open a bodyguard-training facility, and this dangerously sexy ex-Navy SEAL knows all her most embarrassing secrets. He knows about her first kiss. He knows when she lost her virginity and where (*cough* inthebackofatruck *cough*).

All summer, Isabel has been ducking around corners to hide from Ford, but as THREE LITTLE WORDS begins, she’s decided that enough is enough. Fool’s Gold is too small for her to avoid him forever, especially since he just rented the place next door.

Enter the THREE LITTLE WORDS blog tour contest once a day every day from July 30 through August 11 for a chance to win a $25 Amazon or BN.com gift card! And because this blog was set up by Fool’s Gold Cheerleader Brenda Rumsey, if you win, she’ll win a gift card, too!

SUSAN WANTS TO KNOW: Who was your embarrassing teenage crush? Why are you embarrassed?
