ANGI: Ice cream or Cake?

MARY: Ice cream, definitely. And if we’re placing orders, I’d like two scoops of Pralines & Cream with extra caramel, whipped cream, and a cherry in a cup. :)

ANGI: Benedict Cumberbatch or Chris Pine?

MARY: Both. I’m a sucker for a smart man with blue eyes. Wait, I already have one of those. :)

ANGI: Veggies or a good dessert?

MARY: Is there such thing as a bad dessert? Dessert definitely.

ANGI: What’s your favorite meal?

MARY: Whatever meal comes with dessert. :)

ANGI: What’s your favorite cartoon character?

MARY: Does Groot count? He’s more of a comic book/movie character. But what’s not to love about a giant talking tree who can make the world a better place while kicking bad guys’ butts?

ANGI: I. Am. Groot.

ANGI: What do you like about the hero of your book?

MARY: He’s a Marine who’s honest, hard-working, and imperfect.

ANGI: Is there a playlist you’d recommend for reading your latest release?

MARY: Ooh, this is fun! Let’s see, “Come With Me Now” by the Kongos, “Love Me Again” by Jon Newman, “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence, “Steal My Kisses” by Ben Harper, and “I’ve Seen a Little” by Alan Doyle.

ANGI: Where do you read and how often?

MARY: I read every chance I get, so that’s pretty much anywhere I can. :)

ANGI: What do you like best about ENERGIZED?

MARY: It was the most fun to write. That sounds kind of strange considering there’s a vicious murderer in the book, but the characters were so alive in my head that it made the whole process so much more enjoyable.

ANGI: What’s your favorite rerun on television?

MARY: I don’t have cable or satellite. So I don’t know what’s on TV these days. :) When streaming Netflix, I enjoy watching Miss Fischer’s Murder Mysteries. (A television show filmed in Australia.)

ANGI: Are you looking forward to any movie releases?

MARY: MINIONS!! Although, by the time this comes out, the movie will already be out and I will have probably seen it twice. :)

ANGI: What's your most favorite thing to do in your state?

MARY: Virginia is a diverse state. There’s an ocean on side and mountains on the other. I think my favorite activity in the Commonwealth is to spend time at the ocean.

ANGI: Who’s your favorite villain?

MARY: Mr. Wickham is my favorite villain of all time. He’s such a scoundrel, so contemptuous for the time period (Pride & Prejudice) that it’s almost fun to hate him. He’s worse than a killer because he’s really a giant loser of his own making.

ANGI: Hiking Boots or Dancing Heels?

MARY: With the National RWA Conference on the brain, I’d have to say, dancing heels. :)

ANGI: How is it working with hot guys and sexy women all day?

MARY: Fun and incredibly busy.

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: What is your best wish come true?

MARY’s GOTTA ANSWER: Walking into a book store and seeing my books on the shelf. It’s been more than a year since it first happened and I’m still giddy every time I find my book in the wild.

The touch of her cool, delicate hands between his much larger ones sent a jolt of awareness through his body. From the way her eyes widened, she must have felt it too.

Shelley sucked in the right corner of her bottom lip. The sight of it thundered straight to his tightening groin. “All right. I’ll go with you to Tidewater, tomorrow. But that ocean view had better be spectacular,” she joked.

“Satisfaction guaranteed.”

“Thanks, Dev.” She beamed at him, then cleared her throat and pulled free from his touch. “Your girlfriend is one lucky woman.”

“Shelley, that relationship ended a long time ago. I . . . uh, don’t have a girlfriend.”

“You broke up? I’m sorry to hear that.” But the smile on her face and the dilation of her pupils belied that statement. She licked her lips and leaned closer to him. Her soft fingers entwined with his rougher ones again. “Really sorry.”

Awareness rocketed through him.

“Don’t be. I’m not.” And, oh God, her lips were right there. The scent of Shells, vanilla and sugar, teased his senses. His mouth watered for just a taste. Dev craved a taste of her, just a sample. Slowly, giving her time to pull back, he lowered his head.

VICKI:  How often to you get lost in a story?

MARY: Hi Vicki! Thank you for hosting me on GLIAS! I’m thrilled to be back!

VICKI: How often to you get lost in a story?

MARY:  Every chance I get. I’m a huge reader. I have four bookcases stacked two rows deep with novels. If it has a happy ending, I’ll read it. Right now, my bed stand has books by Valerie Bowman, Lena Diaz, Lynne Silver and Suzanne Brockmann waiting to be read.

VICKI: Is there a “Blooper” in your story (it may have been changed before printing)?

MARY:  Oh yes. One of my characters is big into pop culture references. Twice he calls the heroine Mary Jane Parker. Oops! It took my nine year old to point out that it’s Mary Jane Watson. Luckily, error was caught before the final version went to print or my spidey senses would still be going haywire. LOL

VICKI: Do you write while listening to music? 

MARY: I write while listening to a 3-6 minute clip of music on a constant loop. SPIRITED was written to Maid With The Flaxen Hair by DeBussey, but GUARDED was written to Early Takes Serenity (Soundtrack from Serenity). I need the music to be wordless and short enough that went it starts to loop over, I don’t notice enough to stop writing. It’s like white noise only it inspires creativity, at least in me. :)

VICKI: What’s the first thing you do when you finish writing a book?

MARY: Type THE END. LOL The first thing I do when I finish a draft is pour a glass of wine and let myself breath for a few days. I watch movies or bake or just hang out with my family.

VICKI: What would you say is your most interesting quirk?

MARY: I collect mementos for each book I write, then I take the souvenir with me when I travel. So for GUARDED, I bought a toy ferret. I carried that ferret everywhere until I finished the book. Now it sits on my shelf unless I’m at a book signing, then the ferret will show up somewhere on my table.

VICKI: What three things are, at this moment, in your heroine’s purse, satchel, reticule, weapons belt or amulet bag (whatever she carries)?

MARY: My heroine doesn’t carry a purse. She has a wallet that she shoves into her back pocket. All that’s in there is her money and ID

VICKI: What is your hero’s “kryptonite” – in other words, what will bring him instantly to his knees? 

MARY: Besides the heroine? His family. He’s a sucker for his family. He might be a big, tough city cop, but he comes from an enormous tight-knit extended family.

VICKI: What will always make you smile, even on a bad day?

MARY: My husband and children. No matter how bad it gets, they light up my world.

GOTTA ANSWER: 

VICKI: Mary, I am all about handbags. I would like to know what is your favorite bag? (It can be an every day one, evening, or just a favorite!)

MARY: I have an over-sized black purse that I’ve lately started carrying. It’s big enough to carry my Mac, snacks for the kids, my wallet, keys, and even a book or two. It’s huge and clunky and I love it!

WHAT THE SPIRITS WON'T TELL YOU

ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?

MARY: Every chance I get! J If I’m not writing, I’m reading. Even if I’m driving, I’m reading…well, listening to a book.

 

ANGI: What’s the first book you remember reading? 

MARY: HORTON HATCHES THE EGG…Dr. Seuss was my hero.

ANGI: What’s your favorite “love” word?

MARY: Love. I’m a traditionalist. I want to hear those three words. In my house we say them often because real love never gets old.

ANGI: Can you tell us about a real-life hero you’ve met?

MARY: I worked for the American Red Cross for years. On May 25, 2001, the movie PEARL HARBOR released in theaters. I was invited to dress as WWII Red Cross nurse and greet actual veterans of the Pearl Harbor attack at the movie’s screening. I met a Marine who enlisted at age 16 (he lied about his age to get into the military) who went from being the new man on the ship to a gunner in the space of a few hours. It was the most moving experience of my life.

 

ANGI: What’s your favorite cartoon character?

MARY: Horton the Elephant.

ANGI: What sound or noise do you love?

MARY: The sound of my children laughing. They have such great laughs.

ANGI: Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?

MARY: Action Adventure, definitely.

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

MARY: It’s A Wonderful Life by Frank Capra. There’s so much in that movie that you can watch it every year for twenty years and still catch something new each time.

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: What is your favorite, favorite thing about SPIRITED?

MARY's GOTTA ANSWER:   The hallway scene after Seth and Jules meet for the first time. Cracks me up every time.
