Blast to the Past: IDENTICAL TWINS IN DANGER

THE RENEGADE RANCHER
The Renegade Rancher was originally called DOUBLE BLIND. It’s an identical twin story--and yes, the brothers do their twin-thing. This story is based on some of my mom’s experience as a land title secretary for twenty years. I had no idea that houses (and land) could be sold separately from their mineral rights. Did you?

In some places, mineral rights are clearly more valuable than others. So there’s a different twist. Just like there’s a different twist for this serial killer. Speaking of the serial killer…he’s the first I’d written (I have several now, along with the current suspense I’m writing). My critique partner at the time began reading and said I’d done a great job researching the BTK Killer from Wichita, Kansas. “Uh…what?” I asked since I hadn’t done any research. Personally, I didn’t see any resemblance, but others did.

Apparently, my mind works in a weird way. LOL This book happens to be my daughter’s and husband’s favorite. Tim because my hero actually says a line that came directly from him (clue: it involves drinking from the carton of milk) and my daughter because the hero is an EMT (which she had planned on being summers between college—she was a lifeguard instead). Read my post about NAVY SEAL SURRENDER to find out why both books are special to me.

Visiting Aubrey was more awesome inspiration. The old grain silos and train are definitely in the story. Oh, one more thing. I rediscovered one of the best lines I think I’ve written: This was the longest he’d ever been with a woman and he hadn’t met her yet.

Curious? Here’s an excerpt from The Renegade Rancher

Just his luck. Hold a girl’s hand and she calls it a nightmare.

Brian knew it wasn’t him and could admit he had no business telling her earlier he’d rather take her to bed. Crass. Rude. Ungentlemanly. And a couple of other things if his daddy found out. Being nearly thirty years old wouldn’t stop the old man from giving him a good earful on how to treat a lady.
“One day the nightmare will be over.” He hoped. “Remember, we’re going to catch—”
“This creep.” She laughed, finishing his sentence. She dropped the partial braid she’d been nervously plaiting and slapped her jean-covered thighs. “I think that must be our mantra for this adventure.”
“And a damn good one to remember until we do.” Brian laughed. Easy, pleasant and infectious. “Adventure, huh? Ready to find out if Mac has running water and electricity?”
“Where are we?” she asked as they unloaded and unlocked the door.
“A little north of Fort Worth. Not too far out in the boonies.”
“It feels like the boonies. I’m horrible at directions, but it doesn’t seem possible that we’re still near Fort Worth.”
“We’re not far. Straight highway and we can be back at your place in half an hour. Good, he has lights.”
“You were just joking about the running water, right? I never did get that shower.”
“Try that door.” He pointed to one next to the small kitchen.
She cracked the door enough for him to see a sink, gave him a thumbs up and disappeared behind the closed—and locked—door.

Mac’s house was totally off anyone’s radar if they were looking for someplace Lindsey would be hiding. She’d be safe here, which was Brian’s primary objective. He heard the shower and a long relieved sigh through the thin wall. He finished unloading the food from Mabel’s car, breaking a sweat and making the skin under his bandage itch.
But that wasn’t all that was itching. His skin was irritated by the T-shirt as he put away the last of the beer and wine. He was irritated at himself when he realized he was looking for an excuse to take it off. The idea of meeting Lindsey bare-chested prompted him to open the new stainless steel fridge and pop the top on a beer.
He took care of the basics, securing the doors and windows, getting the bed ready, putting a pillow and blanket on the leather couch. All the while having no trouble picturing Lindsey’s sun-kissed skin lathered in soap. And no problem imagining the small bubbles being rinsed away. Or how he wished he was in that shower with her.
“Damn it. Get a grip.”
The water stopped and he reached for another beer.
“You look like you’ve gone for a run,” she said stepping from the bathroom in a skimpy, short T-shirt and shorts cut up to her hip. Her hair was wrapped inside a stark white towel that made her skin all the more appealing.
He gulped down the cool liquid, swallowing the desire building low in his belly. Any sweat on his upper lip was purely from his heavy breathing, not any labor he’d done while she was cooling off.
She crossed the small area rug in her bare feet making him glad he was still in his boots. Maybe checking the perimeter one more time was a good idea. It would get him out of the house and out of arm’s reach.
“How do we start looking for someone we know nothing about?”
“We know something about him.” He tipped the end of his second beer between his lips and crushed the empty can before setting it on the table. “He can’t fight worth a Hoover Dam.”
“Well, neither can I.” Lindsey unwrapped the towel and shook her hair down her back, finger-combing and fluffing the damp wheat-colored strands. She dropped the towel over the chair next to him. “Seriously, where do we start?”
He had himself under control. Right up to when she batted those long lashes in his direction and those baby blues taunted him with their brilliance.
She took a step back and he caught her hand. With a little tug and footwork he remembered from the couple of times he’d danced in public, he had Lindsey securely wrapped in his arms. It might be very ungentlemanly, but he had every intention of kissing her until she admitted she wanted to see if the bed was as new as the kitchen appliances.
“How `bout where we left off?” he whispered, almost afraid to ask. He had to ask, of course. Because as much as he wanted to show her she couldn’t resist him, the decision had to be hers.
She didn’t move, but she was far from frozen. With his free hand, he traced the outline of her mouth. She sighed as her lips parted and her eyes closed. Her head tilted to the perfect angle for him to enjoy his prize.
He expected something to happen. An interruption. Someone handing him his hat or waving from the porch. But no one was there. They were alone. Far from his family or danger. No one would be stopping them but them.
He hesitated too long and she opened her soft, sexually charged eyes. Then she followed the path his finger had taken and moistened her lips. He was a goner. Had been the moment he’d sat at that table and finally spoke to her at the sandwich shop. His dad had told him more than once that when he fell it would be hard and there’d be no coming back.

If you haven’t read Brian’s story, I hope you’ll give it a try.

Here’s what a couple of people thought…

“If you are looking for a book that's very well written, has well-defined characters and lots of action then this is the story for you. Angi Morgan had me holding my breath in anticipation of what was to come next so many times in this book. It really is a story that you can't put down until the very end, so you have all your questions answered and a very joyful HEA. I highly recommend this book.”
~Margie H, Amazon 5 Star review

Once again Angi Morgan does and exceptional job of creating a complex but believable plot that had me holding my breath. Her characters are outstanding and relate-able, and their relationship sings. In the Renegade Rancher, the second in the two book Texas Family Reckoning, Brian has spent months trying to figure out who murdered a beloved teacher and framed him 12 years ago. He had spent too much of his life believing that his brother's negligence caused the death. So he stepped up and took the blame and faced vilification from the town and harassment from the local police. Now that he is getting closer to a solution, he realizes that a relative of the dead teacher is in danger from the same man. While they work together to find the monster who has been getting away with murder for 20 years, Brian's reputation and the idea that a killer could go unnoticed for 20 years makes dealing with the police impossible. With limited help from his brother, Brian must find a way to protect Leslie and help her locate the killer, before he locates them, again!”

The Awesome Kimberly Kincaid

Kimberly Kincaid writes contemporary romance novels that split the difference between sexy and sweet, taking the traditional idea of boy-meets-girl and infusing it with a sassy magic all her own. She believes in fiery yet flawed characters destined for a crash-course in falling in love-- usually the hard way-- and injects her trademark humor as well as poignant touches into her writing to create her stories.

Kimberly's writing journey has led down some bumpy roads (that first manuscript is under the bed, where it is very likely to stay), but there has been some fresh pavement too (her second manuscript earned her very first contest final, and landed the fantastic Maureen Walters at the Curtis Brown Literary Agency). One thing is certain -- the wild ride of being a writer is a lot richer in both its ups and downs because of friends and readers along the path.

When Kimberly's not sitting cross-legged in an ancient desk chair known as "The Pleather Bomber", she can be found practicing obscene amounts of yoga, whipping up anything from enchiladas to eclairs in her kitchen, or curled up with her nose in a book. She resides in northern Virginia with her wildly patient husband and their three daughters.

GIMME SOME SUGAR
The three stairs leading from the yard to what remained of the deck were still anchored in place, and Jackson mounted them easily even though the far side of the deck had sustained enough damage to make it a bad idea. It was the only way he was going to get a good enough look at the point of impact; plus, if the boards ended up giving way, it wasn’t as if he’d fall more than a foot or two.
He was crouched down low to examine the missing boards and busted railing when the most horrific attempt at song filtered loudly through the screen door.
“Ouch.” Jackson winced at the spectacular racket over his shoulder, biting back a laugh. It was absolutely wrong to eavesdrop on a client belting out oldies in the privacy of her own home, even if she was doing it with nothing but the rolling screen that accompanied her sliding glass door between them. The woman’s voice was an audio train wreck, and his curiosity jumped like a trout at daybreak. One peek wouldn’t hurt, would it?
As soon as he caught sight of the woman through the screen door, all bets for a quick look-see were off. The image of an old lady went up in smoke, replaced by a curvaceous, dark-haired woman in a skimpy bathrobe. Her eyes were shut tight, pretty face turned up to the living room ceiling as she wailed out the song with all her might. Common decency dictated he step back from the house and pretend he hadn’t seen her. He needed to walk away, and he needed to do it pronto.
Nope. Not happening. This woman was beautiful. Even if she did sound like a bag full of pissed off kittens.
Jackson stood, mesmerized, as she moved in place to the slow beat of the music. She was a little slip of a thing, but an air of strength belied her size. Muscular calves tapered gracefully into slim ankles, nearly covered by a pair of floppy yellow socks. A handful of dark tendrils came loose from the knot on top of her head, perfectly framing her Mediterranean features.  She stood in the middle of the living room, eyes squeezed shut to serenade God knows who, and propriety be damned, he couldn’t rip his eyes from her.
Every time she undulated to the sultry rhythm of the song, the belt on her bathrobe slipped lower over her hips, loosening it just enough to reveal the thin tank top beneath. The cotton stretched over her chest as she swayed, and she crooned again to the climbing music.
“You make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like a natural womaaaaaaan!”
With each breath, the generous curve of her breasts pressed against the fabric.
For a split second, all Jackson could think was oh, hell yes.
But then his decency kicked in, hard and fast. He averted his heated face, raising one hand to knock on the metal door frame of the screen. In that same instant, a blood curdling scream ripped through the air over the music, followed by a string of curse words that made Jackson wonder if he should cower in fear or be hugely impressed.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on!” Jackson hollered, holding his hands up. He opened his mouth to tell her who he was and why he was there, but before he could form the words, she snatched something up from the side table and flung it at him with freakish accuracy.
“Wait!”
            Too late.

Sloane Russo’s turned a decade of crazy jobs and whimsical travel into a career writing steamy novels set in exotic places. Trouble is, Sloane’s flat broke now—and she can’t channel sun-drenched beaches in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The only fast cash in town comes with some seriously distracting temptation: Gavin Carmichael, hot, handsome and oh-so-hard-headed.

Gavin isn’t the impulsive Don Juan of Sloane’s novels. He’s raising his thirteen-year-old half-sister, and he’s pretty sure he’s supposed to act like he’s never heard of fun. Sloane is way too sexy and irresponsible to be his idea of a good tutor for Bree, but the unpredictable anti-nanny may be irresistible as well…

THE RENEGADE RANCHER

Texas Family Reckoning
book 2

Tall, blonde, and deadly gorgeous.

Brian Sloane knew that Lindsey Cook was a looker. One glance would let any male with eyes know that fact. Platinum blond hair that hung to her waist, classic blue eyes that would disappear next to a clear summer sky and a body that should be gracing covers of magazines. A looker all right.

This was the longest he’d ever been with a woman and he hadn’t met her yet.

He knew how old she was, where she’d graduated from college, that her best friend’s name was Beth. All that information was on her internet site. He knew she lived in Arlington, drove a sports car, kept two goldfish, and was allergic to cats. She’d had five jobs in the past three years and did freelance web designs. He also knew why she’d migrated to Texas after burying her cousin. Jeremy had drowned while they’d been on vacation together about six months ago and she’d stayed after settling his affairs. Her cousin’s female lawyer had been extra chatty during happy hour.

Unfortunately, accidents happened everywhere, leaving one question he couldn’t answer. How long she would live.

Brian entered the sandwich shop and tried not to zoom all his attention on her. Searching the remaining tables, he noticed no one else was alone, so it was probably safe to assume she was his appointment.
“Lindsey?”

“You’re Brian?” she asked, extending her hand. Her smile could mesmerize him. He’d watched her work that magic on several customers–male and female–over the past couple of weeks.

“That’d be me.” He took a slender palm in his own, gave a quick squeeze and sat at the table. A well-chosen table in the middle of the very empty sandwich shop. The red silky blouse clung everywhere and plunged just enough to make his imagination go a little wild.

“So, you said that Jeremy’s lawyer recommended me for a job. Your email said something about a ranch website?”

“Yeah, about that. This might sound strange, but I’ve been doing some research and—” Was that sudden look in her eyes one of surprise? An alert? How had he messed up?

“No website?”

He stared, thinking hard on what his answer should be. It was important she listen to him. Her life depended on it. He couldn’t just say that. Could he? He’d avoided the truth long enough.

“To be honest—”

“Excuse me just a sec.” She looked into her purse. She brought her keys to the tabletop. Hooked to the ring—now pointed at his face—was a small can of pepper spray. “Who are you and why have you been following me? I saw you in front of the store yesterday and you were in line behind me when I got coffee last week.”

“Whoa there.” He raised his hands trying not to jump away from that can. “I really am Brian Sloane. I’m a Fort Worth paramedic, just like I said on the phone. I’ve got ID.”

She shook her head slowly from side to side. Was she thinking about believing him or shooting that pepper spray into his eyes? Okay, so he’d slipped up and not only let her see him a couple of times, but he’d made eye contact at the coffee shop. Who could have resisted? She was smoking hot.
“I’m going to leave,” she said, “and you better stop following me. Just so you know, I took your picture when you walked in and if I see you again—even by accident—I’ll report you to the police as a stalker.”
Texas Family Reckoning
Book 1

He leaned forward, and she jerked to attention. Skittish as a newborn colt. “I know this is a weird way to meet.”

“To say the least.” She kept the nozzle pointed at his eyes. Extremely close to his eyes.

“But I do have information regarding your family.”

“I don’t have any family.”

“What I mean is…I’ve been doing research and I think Jeremy was murdered.”

“I thought you were an EMT. You sound like a reporter.” She brought her finely shaped eyebrows into a straight line, showing her scrutiny and distrust. Not knowing she’d just delivered an insult to highly trained paramedics everywhere by calling him an entry-level EMT.

With a new sister-in-law around his house he was picking up on a lot of subtle feminine looks that he’d had no clue about before. This look? Well, it didn’t leave any room for interpretation.

He shifted. She jerked.

“Just getting my wallet. Okay?”

“Is there a problem, Lindsey?” The guy behind the sandwich counter stopped wiping the display cases.
“I’m fine. Just dealing with another jerk reporter.”

“I’m not a reporter.” He shook his head, looked at the big fellow who was very defensive of the woman in front of him and repeated, “I’m not a reporter.”

“Then why are you following me?”

“It’s a long story that I’d rather not have pepper spray aimed at me while I tell it.”

Lindsey’s long straight hair gently framed a delicate, expressive, beautiful face that he’d been attracted to since the first picture he’d seen of her online. It sort of took him by surprise when she leaned back in her chair, dropped her hands to her lap and waited. The key ring in plain sight. Her protector returned to cleaning. The shop’s patrons went back to business as usual.

“I’d like the short version please,” she said, pushing her hair behind her ear. “You’ve got five minutes and then I’m leaving.”

Short? How did he explain such a complicated story?

“All right. Twelve years ago I thought my brother caused the accidental fire that took the life of one of our former teachers, your second cousin, Gillian Cook. But I was wrong. She was murdered.”

THE RENEGADE HERO

by Angi Morgan

The Rebel. The Bad Boy. The Loner. Why is a renegade hero so attractive?

He's been around for a long time….We loved our Rake stories.  A little scruffy around the edges, but he cleans up too handsome for words. Motorcycles, leather jackets, brooding faces, or Adamantium claws…they just make this hero more desirable.

I love the Marvel Comics Movies. I have them all on blue ray and have watched them multiple times…and I haven't given up on Loki yet. Okay I know I should? He's a villain, but there's something about him (at least Tom Hiddleston) that makes you think that the right woman would change him for the better.

Some of my first renegade loves were Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood.

And the first time I saw 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU with Heath Ledger... WOW.

My  renegade is Brian Sloane. His small home town believes him guilty of carelessly setting a fire that killed a teacher, they ostracize him and lable him the town "bad boy". For twelve years he stuck it out. Wanting to leave. Needing to stay to take care of the family ranch. Secretly earning money for his father as a paramedic, not caring that the town believed him a drug dealer.

After their father suffers a stroke, estranged brothers are forced to set their differences aside in order to save their family ranch in north Texas--solving a kidnapping and a twelve-year-old murder in the process.

THE RENEGADE RANCHER
Texas Family Reckoning, book two

A TEXAS RANCHER FINDS TROUBLE ON HIS DOORSTEP IN THE FORM OF A KILLER'S BEAUTIFUL NEXT TARGET…

It's clear to Texas rancher Brian Sloane that Lindsey Cook will be a serial killer's next victim. For twenty years someone has been systematically killing off her family in "accidents," and recently her car was deliberately run off the road. The handsome cowboy is willing to be the protector the gorgeous blonde wants—but unwilling to act on their instant attraction.

Before long, the search for Lindsey's stalker leads Brian into more trouble…and right into Lindsey's arms. After one smoldering kiss, he knows there'll be no turning back. Though never one for relationships, he'll risk his life for her…and the surprising secret her family has been dying for.
