ANGI: Favorite thing about Adam McKenzie
LENA: Adam is just so NICE! Even though he’s definitely a big, strong, alpha guy capable of protecting the heroine, he’s so sweet to her in every way. And he always puts her needs before his. He gets seriously horribly hurt protecting her and he STILL keeps going, through terrible pain, to save her life. I just wanted to cry and hug him and apologize for everything he went through. Adam is one of those heroes who makes you sigh and smile. He’s a keeper, for sure.

ANGI: Favorite thing about Jody Ingram
LENA: She wears glasses, like me! Seriously. I almost never come across heroines in romance novels who wear glasses. As an author, I understand. It IS a pain to remember to mention them when it would make sense in real life to mention them and to remember that she has to wear them to see. But, I think it makes her more relatable. And I was thrilled that the art department put her in glasses on the cover. And they’re green, like her eyes, just like I wrote it. So cool and fun!

ANGI: Favorite thing about Smoky Mountains Ranger
LENA: A lot of my Tennessee books are set in the mountains with the hero and heroine on the run. This one has that, for sure. But it also goes into cities and suburbs and has tons of action. I really had fun with it and loved the variety of settings and situations in this story. And it’s so incredibly emotional. The backstory of the heroine and how it intersects with the mystery is so tragic. I wanted to hug her too. I totally cried writing this book. It’s one of my favorites that I’ve ever written.

ANGI: I know you live in Florida, did you travel to the Smoky Mountains for research?
LENA: I absolutely love the Smoky Mountains. It’s one of my most favorite places to go on vacation. I’ve hiked up to Clingman’s Dome, driven through Cade’s Cove, walked all through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to see waterfalls and old historic buildings hidden throughout the park. Since I’m so familiar with the setting, I didn’t make an additional trip there for this book. But I did do a lot of internet searches to learn more about the National Park Service and the work the rangers do. I also emailed the NPS to ask about their communications in the park. I totally had to rewrite parts of my book after they gave me their reply! But I was proud that I was able to accurately portray how the communications work.

ANGI: Favorite scene in Smoky Mountains Ranger
LENA: This is so hard without giving away spoilers! But there is one scene in the story where the hero has found out some devastating information about the heroine’s past and some awful things that happened to her. It destroys him to know that someone who was supposed to care about her ended up hurting her so deeply. He’s so crushed that he gets drunk and writes down all the ways he wants to torture the person who hurt the heroine. He gets pretty creative! When the heroine discovers what he wrote, it’s a huge turning point in their relationship. It’s when she realizes he truly cares about her and that she has real worth to someone. Her past trauma has really done a number on her self-esteem. This scene is an incredibly emotional scene, as are many in this book. And, yes, I cried while writing it. But it was a good cry.

the December Intrigues

"Intrigues make my heart feel awesome. Not only with the romantic part of the story that can make the heart do that ‘awww’ thing. But also with the tension and mystery that increase the blood flow and causes my heart to pound ferociously. There has been many a night that even when my eyes want me to sleep, my brain says, “Finish the darn book!”  ~Charlene Brody

Nico is giving away an autographed copy of his  debut Intrigue, Renegade Protector! Be sure to leave a comment and get extra chances through the Rafflecopter.

RENEGADE PROTECTOR
When intimidation turns to deadly force,
It’s time for Frontier Justice.

If ruthless developers want Mariana Balducci’s land, they’ll have to kill her for it. And they nearly succeed—until Ty Morrison foils her attacker. The sexy San Francisco cop is part of a secret organization called Frontier Justice. Mariana is tough, but she realizes she can’t win this fight alone. And when bullets fly, Ty realizes battling bad guys is easier than fighting their sizzling attraction.

ANGI:  Favorite thing about Ty Morrison
NICO: I love how dedicated Ty is. Once he commits to helping Mariana, there’s nothing that can stop him.

ANGI:  Favorite thing about Mariana Balducci
NICO: Mariana’s strength through the turmoil is something I really like. A lot of terrible things are thrown her way, but she isn’t broken.

ANGI:  Favorite thing about Renegade Protector
NICO: I love the legacy that Ty brings to Mariana with Frontier Justice. It’s a group of people helping others, not for anything in return, but because it’s the right thing to do. His ancestor started it in the 19th Century, and Ty’s bringing it back when people need it most.

ANGI:  Where is Renegade Protector set?
NICO: It’s set in Rodrigo, California. A fictitious town just inland from the Monterey Bay.

ANGI:  Favorite scene in Renegade Protector
NICO: One of my favorite scenes is when Ty walks the land of Mariana’s orchard with her. It ties together the past of their ancestors and the current story, revealing how connected she is to the space as well as his growing feelings for her.

"My favorite  part of Halloween is the pumpkin carving and when my children were little, dressing them up in costumes I’d sewn. Halloween only really came to be big in the UK in the past 20 years, but I made sure I had brought some of the American traditions over.  My second Halloween over here (1989), I went looking for pumpkins and the local supermarket was selling pieces of cut pumpkin. They used scoop up rutabagas to make jack o’lanterns in the North East of England!" ~ Michelle Styles
