Get Lost in Sandra Sookoo's latest release: Coming Up Daffy

He loves me, he loves me not, he…wait, am I like a platypus?

Coming Up Daffy
Sandra Sookoo
Astraea Press

Alice Attler has a green thumb in everything except cultivating relationships. Though she’s more comfortable encouraging green things to grow, she’s mystified that every relationship she’s had has withered. When a client’s daffodils won’t grow, she heads to the bait shop for earthworms where she meets Mark.

Mark Kincaide doesn’t know what to do with himself. His brother is on his honeymoon and he’s stuck with Grandma for company. Plus, he’s not a fan of the evil llamas. Just once he wants to do something heroic and be known as someone other than the bait guy. When the local plant specialist/florist comes calling, he can’t take his eyes off her…and it’s for more than catching a glimpse of bird poop in her hair.

An innocent trip to a river bank to dig up bulbs puts Alice in danger and Mark finally has his chance to play the hero. After things settle down, he hopes he and Alice will have more in common than just worms and a penchant for taking tumbles into embarrassing moments.

Here's brief excerpt:

Set-up: We’re in Mark’s POV, and he’s been trying to teach Alice how to fish. She hasn’t got the hang of it so he’s done the classic “stand behind her and how her how” move.

He wrapped his right arm around her, fully tucking her into an embrace. This time he bent his head and buried his nose into her hair. Wow, I could get used to this. On the heels of that thought, he sent up a quick prayer that a potential relationship with her would work out.

She smelled like a mixture of peaches and flowers. I think I’m in big trouble. Having her so close, thinking halfway intimate thoughts about her had things tightening behind his fly.

Yup, I’m in big, big trouble.

Clearing his throat, he released her and stepped away. “Well, we can always work on your casting skills later.”

Obviously, if he was going to make fishing lessons a side business, getting this close to clients was not on the agenda.

More about Sandra Sookoo (in her own words).

Thanks for stopping by Get Lost in a Story. I'm a foodie and whenever my mind is in a funk, I head to the kitchen! I love baking and cooking and will try anything once. I’m also a Walt Disney World nut. If it’s got Disney’s name on it, I can probably talk your ear off on the subject. I’ve been prone to using Disney lyrics to kick off blog posts and explain life problems. LOL!
My passion is being an author of romantic fiction. I write in the sci-fi, contemporary, historical, and paranormal genres, sometimes blending genres for that little bit of edge. If you’re looking for shorts, novellas or full-length pieces ranging from sweet to spicy heat levels, I urge you to check out my website. http://sandrasookoo.wordpress.com/tag/coming-up-daffy/

Note from Jillian: As we approach summer, I've been asking our guest authors to share a few vacation snapshots with us. Sandi and her husband just got back from Disney World. Here a few photos, which Sandi has captioned for our entertainment. Lol!

Statue of Walt disney and Mickey. Caption: Never stop dreaming and believing!

Two monster topiaries from Disney's upcoming Monster University.
Caption: The monster on the right is saying: "She's such a diva!"

Me and Goofy.  Caption: There's something wrong when a dog makes breakfast...

Sandra has a question/challenge for commenters: As an author of quirky characters, I'm always on the prowl for new ones. If you had the chance to create a resident of my fictional town of Francesville, what sort of character would you want to see? Feel free to describe personality, traits, etc.
Giveaway: I have a swag packet leftover from my RT At Home blog event (see photo below) One randomly drawn winner will win this, a digital copy of Twelve Kisses Later (which is the first book in the Francesville series) and--if the commenter has answered the question--their idea for a character will appear in an upcoming Francesville story!

One lucky commenter will win a digital copy of Twelve Kisses, a swag packet, plus have your character appear in Sandi's next Francesville story!

Do You Believe in Love and Magic?

Just think of lovely things.
And your heart will fly on wings,
Forever in Never Never Land.
–Peter Pan

Chasing Love & Magic
Sandra Sookoo

Welcome to Crystal Falls, Indiana.  There’s something magical about this tiny town filled with love and laughter.

Come grab a meal at Peg’s Place diner, where the conversation is as warm as the cooking.

Drop by Just Cookies, the little bakery with a big heart, where you’ll meet Jinx Adams, baker extraordinaire who may, or may not, be a leprechaun.

And then there’s Landon Bernhardt, co-owner of the bakery, who recently broke the news that he’s a nephew of Santa Claus.

Down on your luck in love?  No problem. Landon’s brother, Aaron, is the new Cupid and he’ll patch up your romantic ills.

Need a place to stay?  Try Mrs. Wiggins’s boardinghouse, just don’t expect to get a decent meal there.  She’s not a very good cook and she’s kind of… mysterious.

Have a dental issue while in town?  No worries.  Swing by Sparkling Smiles Dentistry and ask for Zoe Nickles.  She’s the best hygienist there, but don’t tell anyone she also moonlights as a sexy tooth fairy.

Please don’t mention magic to Zoe’s sister, Rosemary.  She doesn’t have a magical bone in her body, but that doesn’t mean special energy won’t follow her home during the Halloween season.

Wander around and enjoy your visit!  If you feel “at home” here, you’d better talk to Mrs. Wiggins.  She’ll know exactly what to do with you… and if you’re lucky, you just might find yourself chasing love and magic.

There is something about Sandra that sparkles...or maybe it really is fairy dust.

Sandra is a writer of romantic fiction.  Her portfolio includes historical, contemporary, sci-fi and paranormal romances in full length as well as shorts.  She loves to blend genres, spice them up and often times will add humor as well.

When not immersed in creating new worlds and interesting characters, Sandra likes to read, bake and travel.  Her favorite place to spend vacation hours is Walt Disney World.  It’s where dreams come true and the soul can play.  When she’s not writing, she’s keeping things interesting at the Believing is Seeing blog or spending time with her husband.

Jillian: What is it about Crystal Falls, Indiana that makes it so magical?
Sandra:  It’s a special little place where folks who are “inclined” to magic can come and meet fate.  It’s also a place where a certain amount of matchmaking occurs.

Jillian: When you created Peg's Diner, did you also come up with a menu? What's Peg's Special today?
Sandra: LOL I kinda did! Typical diner food, I even have a meatloaf recipe floating around the web that I used for promo at one time.

Jillian: I once had a fantasy to start a cupcake shop. Just Cookies sounds like...just cookies! What's in the oven? And please share a bit about Jinx Adams, baker extraordinaire, and Aaron’s brother Landon.
Sandra: Well, at one time I was a caterer, and I love to bake, so a lot of the cookies the Bernhart brothers come up with are from my own kitchen.  Jinx may or may not be a female leprechaun. She was hired on at the bakery to help Aaron once Landon went on to fulfill his destiny as the next Santa Claus.  Landon is a nephew of Santa (who happens to look like a hunky Viking). He fought against the North Pole influence for a long time before he gave in.

Jillian: I understand Crystal Falls has a town cupid (every town should have one of those) Tell us about him.
Sandra: Aaron is the new cupid, and boy did he fight that all the way, but became resigned to his new job once his wings came in LOL! His only trouble is his own failures in romance land.

Jillian: I suppose with all the cookie eating going on in Crystal Falls, one should visit a good dental hygienist, like Zoe Nickles. I understand she also has a sister, Rosemary, who is fairly magic-less???
Sandra: Is she? Maybe… Poor Rosemary isn’t magically inclined and it grates on her nerves, especially when a wolf shifting fireman swaggers into her life.  It’s especially wearing because her sister is the Tooth Fairy!

Jillian: I understand Mrs. Wiggins is the lady to talk to if you're interested in Chasing Love & Magic...
Sandra: LOL Well, she’s definitely the glue holding Crystal Falls together.  I won’t say she orchestrates the comings and goings but…

Question: Who's your favorite hero or heroine with magic powers?

To celebrate the release of Chasing Love and Magic, Sandra is offering a $10.00 Amazon gift card plus book swag (postcards, bookmarks, etc) and Jillian has an authentic Harry Potter Wand complete with illuminating tip for another lucky commenter. Embracing the Lemonade Life
Sandra Sookoo

Desert Breeze Publishing

When life gives you lemons, use them for lemonade or let them sour your life.

Clara Tildon, a cancer survivor, has no time for defeatism. She’s opened up the Cute as a Button B & B in Bridgewater, Indiana, and along with her guinea pig, is embracing the lemonade lifestyle. It was always how she wanted to live. Everything is perfect, except for the nagging sensation that she would still like to fall in love.

Jake Yates has returned to Bridgewater, the town he grew up in, for his friend’s wedding and he’s not happy about it. He got out once and coming back, even for a visit, is not on his agenda. The people of Bridgewater can keep their small town life, it’s in his past and that’s where he intends it to stay. Even loneliness can’t make him reconsider his decisions.

A chance meeting. A fleeting kiss. Suddenly two polar opposites get a unique chance at love. But can Clara give up living in the moment long enough to see Jake as an opportunity she needs to plan for? Can Jake alter his well-laid plans to fit Clara in his life? Or will they both let love get away?

An excerpt from Embracing the Lemonade Life.

Jake wove his way through the cars lining the street. His dress shoes slid on the wet surface of the pavement. He snorted. How perfect for the happy couple. A gentle rain had fallen, softening the night. Jake rolled his eyes at the reflected street lamps in the puddles. The sooner he got out of this town, the sooner he could get his mind back on normal things and conversations which didn't include head count, airline tickets, tux rentals...or love.

Being the best man really sucked.

Bleary-eyed, he peered down the street, mentally calculating how long it would take him to walk to the bed and breakfast before he barfed all over the pavement. Ten minutes, give or take. Tripping over his feet, he groaned. Maybe more alcohol was a bad idea.
By the time Jake reached Main Street, his heels hurt from the uncomfortable dress shoes and he let loose a string of curses into the air. Damn rented shoes because he'd forgotten to bring his own. He knew he'd have to buy the tux when he slipped on the pavement and tore a hole in one knee. His head ached, his heart felt heavy and his stomach panged from emptiness since he hadn't eaten at the reception. That bed better be comfortable because he intended to sleep straight through the night.

He'd gotten halfway across the street, dodging a slow-moving station wagon, when movement from the corner of his eye caught his attention. Turning sharply, he stood with his jaw hanging slack as a woman crawled along the road on her hands and knees, calling out the word "Hamlet." The white sweep of headlights could just be seen at the far end of the street. "Uh, ma'am? I think you should get out of the road." He frowned when she continued to crawl, peeking around the wheel of a parked vehicle. "Excuse me?"

Finally, the woman glanced up and the sheen of the nearest lamp gleamed off the most fiery, copper hair he'd ever seen. Sparkling moss green eyes smiled up at him. "If you don't mind, could you help me find Hamlet?"

"What's a Hamlet?" The haze in his brain kept him from remembering his own name, let alone trying to figure out what she was talking about. Jake glanced in the direction of the headlights. They moved steadily closer at a fair clip, accompanied by the roar of a big diesel engine. "Uh..."

The woman appeared not to notice or care about the danger. "Hamlet's my guinea pig. He escaped the house. I thought he might have headed this way."

"Aw, crap." The bus bore down on them. Jake moved by instinct alone and threw his body into the street, snatching the woman into his arms, then rolled to the opposite side in mere seconds.

Time to play hero to the damsel in distress. Karma was a bitch.

Jillian: How often to you get lost in a story?
Sandra: That depends on how well-written the story is. If an author can draw me in by feeling for their characters, be wrapped up in their setting and have an exciting plot, I'll definitely get lost
Jillian: If you couldn’t be a writer anymore, what profession would you take up?
Sandra: Baker or chef. It's my second love and the kitchen is where I go when I get stuck on a book I'm writing.
Jillian: If you could interview one person (and it doesn’t have to be a writer) who would it be?
Sandra: Walt Disney, hands down. That man had vision, and to think he created his whole empire based on one little mouse when everyone told him he'd fail, well that kind of dedication inspires me to do great things.
Jillian: Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?
Sandra: At first I did, but not so much anymore. Reviewers are people, and they have their own opinions on things. Best thing to learn early on is that reviews aren't personal.
Jillian: What does it mean to love someone?
Sandra: Accepting them for their faults and wanting them anyway. Learning to grow with them.
Jillian: Which era would you least (or most) like to have lived in, fashion-wise and why? Most?
Sandra: Turn of the 20 century. I think it's the best and worst. Clothes were really cool but there were so many of them. I'd probably get frustrated dressing myself every day.

Sandra has a question for readers:

Sandra: What would you like to see me write next? I'm always open to requests and love to write stories with differing heat levels and genres. So, tell me your requests and I'll set my brain to working on it!

For those of you who love a fresh citrus scent, Sandra is offering a lemony prize for a random commenter: a book swag plus lemon-scented hand sanitizer from Bath and Body works!***

Sandra Sookoo

Oh yeah, there be 'Dragons at Dawn' here at Get Lost In a Story!

When fear and extinction threaten life, the only way to survive is to change…or fight back.

Mona Moussai is on the run—from her family, from a dragon and from herself. She wants nothing more than to stay in the Mortal Realm and live a normal live, yet when she tangles with a shape-shifting attorney bent on her capture, instinct demands she hide. However, the secrets buried deep inside could have deadly consequences.

Braeden Hollister has long ago made peace with his dragon heritage but he refuses to live it. He’s a man with many vices, always living for himself, and when the opportunity to drag Mona to the Moussai Realm for a bounty presents itself, he can’t resist the glitter of gold.

What happens next is a foray into a backward realm circa the 1820s...

Dragons at Dawn

Sandra Sookoo

Eirelander Publishing, April 2011

...where dragons not only exist but they’re intent on ruling the realm and restoring power. Personal agendas are forgotten, battle lines are drawn in a world where familial ties strangle and old foes resurface. Political angst explodes all around them. In the end, only the strong will survive to live, and love, another day.

Here's an excerpt:

“What the hell do you mean you started the rumor?”

The roar that accompanied the bellow sent chills over her skin. Fear unfurled in the pit of her stomach like a rolled tea leaf in hot water, expanding, filling her insides until a quick shot of adrenaline sent her into action. She darted through the Portal, and upon leaving the Mortal Realm, tripped over its threshold and tumbled to the ground. Landing on her hands and knees, she wrinkled her nose against the sharp smell of dirt.

She couldn’t afford another stupid mistake. Not now. Now with him close on her heels and problems multiplying with the speed of copulating rabbits.

Mona Moussai, missing daughter of the First Family of the Moussai Realm, jumped to her feet as her heart hammered through her chest like a freight engine. Risking a quick glance over her shoulder, she saw the dragon bearing down on her as he stepped from the Portal, a string of curses issuing from him that would make a sailor blush. At least he hadn’t shifted into dragon form. No amount of positive thinking could make her forget the acid green belly scales or the darkly black scales on the remainder of his body that she’d seen the night before.

“Damn it, Mona, I order you to stop!”

She was sick of being commanded to do things. No more.

Ignoring him, she ran as if death would claim her if she were caught. Maybe it would since Braeden Hollister was a bad-ass attorney with a large appetite for fine food and fast women. Unfortunately, until she could fix her current problem, she was also bound to him. Thanks to one regrettable incident a day ago when she’d picked his pocket and stole a pair of rings that worked as supernatural handcuffs, once she’d slipped a ring on and he did the same, she’d become a prisoner.

No time for regret.

Mona’s pulse pounded loud in her ears. With every ragged breath, her lungs burned as they struggled to pull oxygen into her body. Barely aware of the nighttime world around her, she ran indiscriminately through a heavily wooded area. A crash and subsequent cursing from somewhere behind let her know Braeden hadn’t given up the chase.

Fear knotted her insides and bile rose in her throat. She pushed on, stumbling over twigs and forest debris while her soft wool sweater snagged on pine trees. Straggly branches reached out to snarl in her hair. Tears prickled her eyes but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t. Of all the places in the Eight Realms she didn’t want to be, it was here.

The thought spurred her onward. Her feet ached. The muscles in her legs screamed for a reprieve. A second wind brought a burst of speed and she shot forward over the semi-damp ground. Just being back in the Realm that bore her name made her physically ill. She’d worked hard to create a new life, far away from the drama that belonged to her family. Her efforts were for naught.

A clearing loomed close, frosted from the light of the full moon high overhead. She set her sights on it to get her bearings, reaching the edge of the grassy patch. For two seconds she paused, turning slightly toward him before Braeden tackled her. Mona’s back smacked against the earth. His weight on top of her drove the air from her lungs.

“What part of stop did you not understand?” His deep voice rumbled near her ear and his breath warmed her cheek. “Running is stupid. You already know you can’t move farther than twenty feet from me at any given time.”

She did know and had tested the boundary more than a few times since she’d slipped the damn ring on her finger last night. Unfortunately, it was a cold, hard fact. Any attempt at breaking the twenty foot mark resulted in a sudden migraine and terrible stomach cramps.

Mona struggled, desperate to be out from under him. “Get off me.” She pushed at his broad shoulders. His muscles flexed beneath her fingertips. “I mean it. I won’t stand for this sort of treatment.”

“Considering that you’re not standing at all, I don’t see how it’s an issue.”

“Semantics.” She beat on his chest with her fists, huffing out her irritation when he didn’t budge. “In case you haven’t noticed, you’re not in a courtroom anymore.”

“That may be true, but I still wield the power.” Instead of doing as she asked, he shifted his weight and held her captive with a palm to the ground on each side of her head, his face close to hers. “Until I deliver you back to your family, you will do as I say.”

Her heart pounded and little shivers raced up and down her spine as much from his touch as his close proximity. The moonlight gilded him with silver light, highlighting dark hair, coiffed and gelled in the style of a New York morning news show anchor. His lips could charm any woman’s heart if he would ever give a genuine smile. Braeden Hollister could potentially be a huge threat to her peace of mind.

Lucky for her, she loathed him too much to be affected.

Get Lost In a Story Interview with guest blogger, Sandra Sookoo.

Jillian: What's the first book you remember reading?

Sandra: THE BLUE SWORD by Robyn McKinley. I was very young, maybe 10 or 11 and it made such an impression on me. Probably lit the fire for fantasy in me.

Jillian: What’s your favorite fairy tale?

Sandra: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. I've seen/read the story in many different versions and spins but I'll always love the concept. It's mostly about acceptance, which is what a lot of my work is themed like as well.

Jillian: What turns you off like nothing else?

Sandra: In reading? Probably storylines that are too wild and wacky and can't easily make me suspend my disbelief. Barring that, it might be when the heroine/hero is young like in the 18 year old category. I just can't connect to teens and besides, young people rarely know why they want at that age or have any life experience lol!

Jillian: Describe your favorite kind of hero to read/write?

Sandra: Hmm, my favorite kind of hero? A guy who knows what he wants, and can take the heroine's stuff but who also has enough of a backbone to stand up for what he believes. This man will lay down rules but will bend on some. He'll fight to protect his love and he'll go all mushy when she says or does something just for him. He's a mix of 60 percent good and 40 percent bad and it's that badness that I root for at times!

Jillian: Oh yeah, plus that 40 percent bad is so fun to read/write! What’s your favorite movie of all time?

Sandra: Hands down THE PRINCESS BRIDE. I love the mix of characters in that film (as well as the book) It's such a great cast I don't have a favorite character. I love them all and each one of their back stories. That, in my mind, is great writing.

Jillian: PRINCESS BRIDE fits you like a glass slipper! I can definitely see that style of whimsy/humor in your work! So, who’s your favorite villain?

Sandra: Hmm, that's a tough one. It could be Moriarty in the Sherlock Holmes books. It could be Nemo in Jules Verne's books 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA and THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, but it could also be Malcolm MacDowell in the remake of FANTASY ISLAND or the evil Ba'al who is a Goa'uld system Lord in the STARGATE SG-1 franchise. The combination of the character itself plus the actor Cliff Simon puts him over the top in scariness. I love a bad boy when done right, when you know there's a tiny part of him that's good but he ignores it.

Jillian: Complex villains are some of my faves, as well. Okay, so be honest, when reading 1st person...do you miss the hero’s POV?

Sandra: At times, yes I do and I think that it cheats the reader. I don't like reading the male perception in the 1st person also. I think the only time the 1st person is really successful is if the heroine's journey is the only thing that matters and it's about how she grows as a person through the book. Everything else, in my opinion, needs to be in third person to give the reader a well rounded experience.

Jillian: Do you write while listening to music? If so what kind?

Sandra: Not usually. What I do before I ever pen word one is get together a handful of songs that embody both the hero and the heroine. Then I listen to them over and over while I put together an outline and do character sheets. After that, once I get a good feel for the book as a whole, I write in silence. I've found that for me, writing while listening to music is distracting.

Jillian: What’s the first thing you do when you finish writing a book?

Sandra: LOL Laundry. Housework I've neglected the past weeks it took to write the book. Seriously, that's what I do. Sometimes, my hubby will take me out to dinner but mostly I breathe a sigh of relief, pat myself on the back for a job well done and leave the book to sit for a few weeks before I do any sort of revisions on it. After the revisions, it sits for more weeks to "simmer". Sometimes I'll think of small issues that need to be addressed once I'm away from it for long periods of time. Celebrating doesn't really happen until it's been contracted.

Jillian: Tea or Coffee? And how do you take it?

Sandra: Definitely tea. I don't care for coffee. I love to brew it up and smell it but I'll never drink it. In my tea, it's got to be straight up. No sugar, milk, honey or lemon. Just the tea.

And now for the Get Lost In a Story GOTTA ASK, GOTTA ANSWER QUESTION:

Jillian: Share a secret or two about your impressive e-publishing success and please share one of your fabulous recipes!

Sandra: LOL There is no secret. There is no "if you do this you'll make it" cheat sheet. The fact of the matter is that writing is a business and it's hard work. If you want to succeed in this industry, you have to come prepared to work your fanny off, fall down, get back up again, work even harder. It's a constant learning experience to get better, write stronger, push the envelope. Above all never give up no matter what happens.

Tiger Striped Chicken

(my niece’s favorite dish)

Ingredients:

4 fresh chicken breasts (boneless & skinless)

Seasoning salt (the orange stuff)

Black pepper

Instructions: Preheat oven on 375 degrees. Lay chicken breasts in an oven safe baking dish. Sprinkle meat with the seasoning salt until covered. Carefully make “stripes” diagonally over the breasts to resemble the markings of a tiger.

Bake for 35 minutes or until the chicken is no longer pink in the middle and the juices run clear.

Tomato Rice

(my husband's favorite rice side)

Ingredients:

1 cup of long grain white rice

1 tablespoon dried, minced onions (I use these because my husband doesn’t like real onions in this recipe but if you’re using real onions then ½ of a medium onion, chopped finely)

1 ¾ cups chicken stock (or water)

1 tablespoon smoked paprika

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon of your favorite salt free herb blend (I use one that’s a bit on the floral side)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

½ of large tomato, chopped and seeded

In a three quart sauce pan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add onions. If using real onions, let sweat until soft. Add rice. Stir to coat rice (butter will prevent sticking together) Add the rest of the ingredients EXCEPT tomatoes. Stir. Put lid on pot. Bring to boil then reduce to simmer for 20 minutes or until all liquid has evaporated.

Turn off heat and add tomatoes. Replace lid and keep warm until serving.

Now it's Sandra's turn to query readers:

Sandra: What would you like to see more of? What kind of story would be your perfect book for enjoyment? I might just write that novel!

I'm ready to give away a free PDF download of any book from my back list*** to a lucky commenter chosen at random (2011 releases are not included). I have books that range from sweet romances to hot erotics so there is something for everyone!
