CATCHING UP

WHERE DID I DISAPPEAR TO & WHY

The reason for my absence began last March and April when I noticed the vision in my left eye getting darker. I'd already been told I had the beginnings of a cataract, so that's what I thought. But it wasn't. It was a detached retina. I finally looked up what I was experiencing so I could describe it better to my husband. I was at the specialist the next morning and in emergency surgery that afternoon (May 8th). Then face-down for two weeks. Unfortunately, that repair developed scar tissue and began tearing again. My second retina repair was July 13th.

During those months, the cataracts in both eyes went from barely there to severe. The left eye has a dark cloud and my right had developed a white one. OH and I shouldn't forget to mention that part of the retina repair was to place oil in my eye to keep everything in place...so looking out of my left eye is like looking through a glass pan coated in olive oil.  I could see shapes and colors and a lot of blur. Needless to say, reading was out of the question. Working on the computer wasn't a possibility.

Enough time finally passed that cataract removal was approved for my right eye and I can finally see clearly again. AND...that's why I've been gone.

So I'm ready to get back to work. Ready to write. Ready to read my friends' new releases. Ready to bring you their stories.

In fact, I was asked to join a new community called CANDLEWOOD FALLS. My untitled story will be a part of the first releases on September 1st. I'm falling in love with this town and the stories from all the authors: Lori Matthews, Mary Strand, MK Fawcett, M. Kate Quinn, Jen Talty, Natalie Ann, Stacey Wilk & Arell Rivers.

What will make Candlewood Falls different than other "worlds"? Our shared characters. For instance, when you meet Jacqui, my character who owns the flower shop (FLOWER POWER), anytime someone in the town pops in to order flowers...you'll get to hear from Jacqui again. Recurring characters and places. Shared places and events. Awesome !!  We hope to give readers a bigger community experience.

You can join the Candlewood Falls Reader Group on Facebook and get a chance to win an autographed copy of HER HOT PURSUIT: a duo re-release book which includes Ranger Guardian & Hidden Truth by Danica Winters. Ranger Guardian is the third book in Texas Brothers of Company B.

Drawing is on Tuesday, December 15th.

AND come back here for additional giveaways while I get back into the groove.

Good to see you again !!

C.H.'s Recipe Share ~ Pumpkin Cheesecake Thumbprints

I haven't been on social media or the Get Lost in a Story Blog in a few months because my husband was battling pancreatic cancer since he was diagnosed in January. He fought the good fight and stayed with us as long as he could. On November 18, 2020 at 7:35 pm, he left this mortal plane.

David J. Admirand

Every once in awhile I try something out of my comfort zone...baking-wise. Back in September I had a hankering for something baked with pumpkin--not pie...sorry am just not a fan of Pumpkin Pie. I'd rather eat Squash Pie or a family favorite Sweet Potato Praline Pie.

I was searching for something different, made with pumpkin, and found this Pumpkin Cheese Thumbprints recipe on Delish.com.

I confess to nearly passing the recipe by when I saw that I'd have to use my very pedestrian piping bag skills to pipe the yummy cheesecake filling into the thumbprint after the cookies were baked. But then I thought to myself, well let's not be silly and possibly miss out on a fabulously sounding addition to my collection of cookie recipes.

I am so glad that I did! These little dreams melt in your mouth and are the perfect confection served with either Barry's Irish Breakfast tea or a cup of coffee! Who knew? Certainly not yours truly.

Follow the link above and you'll be surprised at how easy the recipe is to follow. Well, except that the piping part took a bit longer because I forgot how to assemble the darned thing. LOL!

Here's a pic of the finished cookies...

I've always thought sweet treats taste better on Grandma's Limoges dessert plate.

Oh, I almost forgot to say, I've tried the recipe twice, with very similar results. The first time was the tastiest...using a can of pumpkin puree. The second time, I only had pumpkin pie filling. It wasn't quite the same, but still disappeared just as quickly!

Have you tried any new recipes lately? I'd love to hear what you've been baking!

E.E. Burke's Best of the West: Linda Broday's Newest Outlaw Bride

Greetings, readers! After a hiatus, I am back with Best of the West, and wanted to kick off this holiday season with a spotlight on a new release in the Outlaw Bride series from New York Times bestselling author Linda Broday.

Buy It Today

Once Upon A Mail-Order Bride

Accused of crimes he didn't commit, ex-preacher Ridge Steele is forced to give up everything he knew and make his home with outlaws. Desperate for someone to confide in, he strikes up correspondence with mail-order bride Adeline Jancy, finding in her the open heart he's been searching for. Upon her arrival, Ridge discovers Addie only communicates through the written word, but he knows a little of what trauma can do to a person and vows to stand by her side.

Addie is eager to start a new life with the kind ex-preacher and the little boy she's stolen away from her father - a zealot priest of a terrorized flock. As her small family settles into life at Hope's Crossing, she even begins to find the voice, and confidence, she'd lost so long ago.

But danger is not far behind, and her father will not be denied. While Addie desperately fights the man who destroyed her childhood, a determined Ridge races to the rescue. The star-crossed lovers will need more than prayers to survive this final challenge...and find their way back to each other again.

Meet Linda

Let's find out more about the new release...

Who are your favorite characters from this series?

This is a hard one. I’ve loved each one I breathed life into. Each had their own set of seemingly impossible challenges. But I think Adeline (Addie) Jancy in this one had so much more to overcome. She can’t speak and has to rely on writing everything down. She’s been through sheer hell. Whipped and put in prison by her own father, kept in the dark for two years then hunted once she’s released from the penitentiary. Addie doesn’t think anyone could ever love her—until she meets the outlaw, Ridge Steele. He shows her what unconditional love and a true marriage is. From the moment he meets her, he treats her as an equal. Her wishes and dreams are just as important as his. But then Ridge is the most caring, giving one of the outlaws. And when Addie is taken, he doesn’t stop until she’s back in his arms. I just love this couple who are so right for each other.

Is this the last book of the series?

Yes, this is the 4th and final book of the series and I’m so sad to leave this special outlaw town of Hope’s Crossing. The town has been a safe place of refuge for people seeking asylum and a new start. The four original outlaws who started the town have gotten amnesty and new lives with wives and children but there’s still much to do. They see themselves as caretakers of the land and the ones to find justice for those too weak to find it for themselves. Even so, they know they’re the last of a dying breed. The world is becoming more civilized and the law is fast catching up. They’re ready to turn over the reins to the lawmen though so it’s time to end the series.

Are you taking your characters in new directions?

I certainly have in this book. The world is changing so fast and westward expansion has put settlements in the far reaches of Texas. Ridge knows his time as an outlaw is short so he works at gaining respectability and settling old scores. He wants to clear his name and get right with the law. He’s tired of looking over his shoulder and is constantly thinking about what he has to do to protect Addie and keep her safe. I’ve never written a non-speaking character before but I wanted Addie completely vulnerable. I found out exactly how hard it is to write someone who can’t utter a word and I can say that I probably won’t attempt it again. Still, I’m glad I did it with this book.

What have you loved most about this series?

I’ve loved writing about these men living outside the law—their honor, the rules they set down for themselves, and the lines they don’t cross. They have so much heart and the sense of justice beats inside them. They’ve been wronged and harshly judged but they keep working to make better lives and finding wives to share their lot with. They want to walk tall in the sunshine and they find a way to make it happen. There is no giving up in these men. They fight hard and love with as much enthusiasm. I would be proud to have any or all stand by my side when the going gets rough. They’re the best of the best and they live inside me.

What’s next?

I begin a new series in April 2021—Lone Star Legends. Each book will feature one of the children who grew up on the famed Lone Star Ranch as an adult. A new generation of Legends to carry on the family name. Book 1 is The Cowboy of Legend and it features Gracie Legend who is neck deep in the Temperance Movement. She butts heads with a saloon owner in Fort Worth’s Hells Half Acre. Then I’ll have Book 2, A Cowboy’s Christmas Legend, in September 2021.

Reader Question: Have you ever found yourself committed to an unexpected situation you get into? How did you handle it?

Giveaway:  A book (print or ebook) and a 2021 calendar that I designed.

E.E.'s 10th Anniversary Celebration: PIcking Up Steam!

Ten years ago, I officially entered the world of romance writing when I submitted a manuscript to the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart contest. To my utter amazement and delight, I made the finals in November, 2010. That moment gave me the impetus and encouragement I needed to send me down a path to becoming a published author.

This month, I’m celebrating with a special focus on my original
romance series, Steam! Romance and Rails
It all started with an idea and a friendship with two other 2010 Golden Heart finalists, Jacqui Nelson and Jennifer Jakes. I had been working on a railroad romance, and we were all ardent fans of the series Hell On Wheels. I proposed a joint effort, which we turned into three love stories woven together around a common historical event–a gritty, glamorous railroad race.

The anthology Passion’s Prize launched the series with Adella’s Enemy by Jacqui Nelson, Eden’s Sin by Jennifer Jakes and Kate’s Outlaw by yours truly. You can still pick up each of the novellas originally featured in this anthology. I’ll go into more detail on the historical underpinnings of the series in my next blog post. In the meantime, here is an interview I did shortly after publishing the first full-length novel of the series, Her Bodyguard.

What made you combine romance and rails?
That’s a good question. I guess something about the old steam railroads calls to my adventurous side, and to my romantic nature. But more specifically, when I touring a museum in Fort Scott, Kansas, a few years ago, I came across a small booklet about a railroad race. It had all the makings of an epic: crooked politics, underhanded landlords, angry mobs, liars, cheats, killers…I couldn’t imagine a more perfect setting for a great love story.

Tell us a little about the series.
The first books in the series are set against the background of a contentious construction race through southeastern Kansas between two powerful railroads with long names. The government promised the winning line free land grants and exclusive rights through this corridor into cattle-rich Texas so you can imagine how they pulled out all the stops and no one was above cheating.

Her Bodyguard, revolves around the story of the Border Tier. While its crews were trying to win a race, the railroad was feuding with settlers over land rights. That’s really the focus of my book. The heroine, Amy Langford, is a wealthy widow who’s invested heavily in the railroad and is looking for ways to appease the settlers so they’ll stop vandalizing the tracks. Only, someone is out to kill her. The hero, Buck O’Connor, is an outlaw who comes out of hiding to help his cousin avoid financial ruin. Through a twist of fate, he ends up being Amy’s bodyguard. He uses his position to thwart her railroad and help his cousin, while at the same time trying to protect her. You can see that isn’t going to work. But it takes Buck awhile to recognize this. He’s pretty sure of himself.

How much of the story is based in fact?
Quite a bit, actually! Honestly, I couldn’t come up with better scenarios than those I find in history books. The race really happened pretty much as it’s written, the settler’s riots, too. I love to use real events and include historical characters. In this case, I put two people very attracted to each other but with opposing goals in the middle of a cutthroat railroad competition and a land war. It was fun to see how they reacted.

Your books are based in the American West during the nineteenth century. Why that place, and why that era?
I write what I love best. I’ve always been a history geek, and particularly American history. I really got fascinated with the Western expansion when I first moved to Kansas. That period of expansion had such an impact on this country, good and bad. I don’t think people realize just how much. There are so many stories that haven’t been told and I want to tell them.
I try to strike a balance between gritty realism and romance, though I suppose I do err on the side of romance, but in many ways, that Victorian era was very romantic—even in the “Wild West.”

This month, all books in the series Steam! Romance and Rails are on sale for only 99 cents each. We’ve never offered this series at such a low price, so it’s a great time to forego that mocha latte and treat yourself to stories that will keep you warm all winter!

HER BODYGUARD: A determined railroad investor stalked by a mysterious killer seeks protection from a wanted gunslinger, who is hiding a dangerous secret.

KATE’S OUTLAW: After a railroad heiress is abducted, one of her captors becomes her protector. On the run from danger with enemies on all sides, they discover a love as powerful as it is forbidden.
Originally part of the anthology Passion’s Prize. Catch up on the stories of two other women caught up in a dangerous race for riches in Adella’s Enemy by Jacqui Nelson and Eden’s Sin by Jennifer Jakes.

A DANGEROUS PASSION: An inquisitive author sets out to expose a charismatic railroad baron and becomes ensnared in a deadly mystery and a dangerous passion.

FUGITIVE HEARTS: When a newly-made widow tries to cover up the truth behind her husband’s violent death, her plan backfires, sending her fleeing from a hardened lawman determined to bring her to justice.

Who out there has read books in this series? Do you have a favorite character? Who is it, and why are you drawn to them?

I’ll be doing a drawing to give away a $10 Amazon Gift Card to one commenter.

GLIAS crew, thanks for being on this journey with me!

Jacqui's new release: A BRIDE FOR HEDDWYN's $0.99 celebration sale!

My new book release A Bride for Heddwyn

It's been a year since I published my last book, A Bride for Brynmor (book 1 in my Songbird Junction series), but today I have a new book to share with you...

A Bride for Heddwyn (Songbird Junction, book 2)

now on pre-order & going live tomorrow, Oct 2!

To celebrate, I've put both books 1 & 2 on sale for $0.99 until Oct 9th. Or you can read them (like all of my books except for the one for my newsletter subscribers) for free any day with Kindle Unlimited.

What's this story about?

Well...there's a Welshman (named Heddwyn) who can't stand still and an Irish-Cree MĆ©tis musician (named Oriole) who's running away from her troupe manager...and every lie she's ever told. And she's told quite a few!

A Bride for Heddwyn - Opening Paragraph

Denver, Colorado

January 1878

The church bells rang for Lark and her husband, but they’d never ring for Oriole. Unlike her sister, Oriole couldn’t depend on love, and no one could depend on her. All she could do was run from her past and present, which included the dangerously distracting Welshman who kept glancing over his shoulder and insisting they needed to talk.

Can a sister who’s lied to everyone find truth with the wrong man?

A Bride for Heddwyn - Book Blurb

Secrets are everywhere…

From the moment she met her sisters in a Qu’Appelle Valley orphanage, Oriole has rewritten her past to protect her present. Now Lark is married, Wren is lost, and Oriole is on a mission to find Wren before their cruel and controlling troupe manager does. In order to succeed, she must cling to her lies and evade the only man she ever let come close, the fast-talking Llewellyn brother who deserted her without a word.

Second chances are few…

From the moment he first heard Oriole sing with her sisters in a Cheyenne saloon, notoriously scatterbrained Heddwyn Llewellyn’s desire to change gained focus. Until tragedy struck. To protect his brothers and sister, Heddwyn turned his back on love and the only woman who’d ever riveted his attention—all while refusing to talk to him. Now, after two years apart, Oriole’s finally back in his life and so is a shot at redemption.

The Songbird Sisters’ quest for freedom may have reunited Oriole and Heddwyn, but it’s also tearing them apart. Her sadistic troupe manager is more than happy to maim and murder to get his money-making musicians back. Can two hearts always on the run finally stand still long enough to save each other and their love too?

And who will help them?

Friends & family from Noelle & Denver, that's who!

A Bride for Heddwyn (set in January 1878) is book 2 in my Songbird Junction series, but it contains several characters from my Christmas stories: The Calling Birds, set in 1876, and Robyn: a Christmas Bride, set in 1877.

And of course, those characters include Grandpa Gus Peregrine! When there's meddling to be done, Gus will never be content to stay behind Peregrines' Post and Freight's counter sorting the mail. Not when he can get out and give advice for fixin' young folks' lives. And what does Gus have to say about (or at least say in) Heddwyn and Oriole's story?

Something about "Horsefeathers" šŸ¤  And even though I know that word wasn't used until 1927, I feel Gus is a visionary in many areas, including his colorful vocabulary.

Grandpa Gus quote from A Bride for Heddwyn

The owner of Denver's Music Emporium, Mrs. Fitzgerald (first seen in A Bride for Brynmor), is back as well. And she's giving Gus a run for his money in the meddling department. Her word in this story is "fiddlesticks," which luckily is a word first recorded in the 1620s. Mrs. Fitzgerald likes order as you'll see from this snippet...

The shop owner shook her head so vigorously her expertly styled—and controlled—cloud of white hair appeared in danger of falling. “Fiddlesticks. You cannot turn your back on your birthright or your talent.”

No matter when a word was first used, I hope you enjoy the words I've written and will join Heddwyn & Oriole for their Wild West adventure in Colorado 1878.

A Taste of Gratitude & Joy: Tried and True Comfort Recipes

                          https://bit.ly/GratitudeandJoy

When Amanda McIntyre asked if I'd be interested in doing a cookbook with her a few months ago, I jumped at the chance! It started with discussing recipes our characters baked or prepared in our books. Then we started talking about recipes we loved, which one of our relatives handed the recipe down to us, traditions, etc.

But we were both immersed in other writing projects and had to put the cookbook collaboration on the back burner.

Then the unthinkable happened, and the COVID-19 became a pandemic. I was not as aware of it at the time because of my husband's health crisis going on at the same time. But I was quickly brought up to speed when I was able to bring him home from the hospital.

Amanda and I started chatting about the changes in our lives during the pandemic, sheltering in place and the differences between what my family was doing here on the East Coast, and what her family was doing in the Heartland.

One thing was clear to the both of us, the need to draw our families as close as possible, protect them, provide for them...and for us...it all started in the kitchen. My favorite room in the house!

We both knew we had something to offer our Readers...recipes from our hearts, with memories of the strong women who taught us to bake, to cook, and to handle whatever life had in store of us. Because life is not for the faint of heart!

This collection of recipes is our way of thanking our great grandmothers, grandmothers, and our mothers for their lessons in the kitchen and in life.

They not only passed down traditions and their culinary expertise, but how to survive their generation's crises. For our great grandmothers it was the 1918 Influenza epidemic and The Great War. For our grandmothers, it was World War II, Polio and Small Pox. For our mothers it was the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Measles and German measles epidemic. For Amanda and myself it has been 9/ll and the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We encourage everyone to...

Keep the Faith!
Wash your hands!                          Practice Social Distancing
Keep 6' between yourself and others when shopping for essentials at the grocery store, the pharmacy, and running essential errands.

Be Safe!
Be Well!
Be Happy!

And know you are not in this alone!!!
Amanda and I are praying for you and your families!
