THE Q&A
ANGI: How often do you get lost in a story?
ANN: As often as I possibly can. I usually have two or more books on the go at all times. The trick for me is, I don’t read romances when I’m writing a new book, just to make sure I don’t pick up another author’s cadence or turns of phrase, but that’s okay because I love a bunch of other genres too!
ANGI: What’s your favorite thing about your book’s hero?
ANN: David is the kind of man who makes everyone around him feel safe. His compassion and strength just shine through. Besides, he’s gorgeous, as my heroine acknowledges when she thinks,
‘No doubt if he wanted to he could make a lot of money modeling, showcasing expensive sunglasses on that chiseled face, the wind blowing through his toffee-colored hair. Or making women run out to buy cologne in the hopes of suddenly transforming their hubbies into a six-foot, two-inch wall of muscle, with linebacker shoulders and a bootie made for nipping. One glance from his intent blue eyes, reminiscent of the most gorgeous of Florida skies, could make the coldest heart quicken, even hers.’
What red-blooded woman could resist a man like that?
ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
ANN: Ummm…It’s a toss-up between It’s a Wonderful Life and Shawshank Redemption, with White Christmas a close contender. I don’t watch a lot of movies, so when I find myself watching one over and over, or it becomes entwined with my emotions, then I’d count it a favorite. I remember the first time I saw Shawshank Redemption. It moved me in ways a movie never had before and was unforgettable. Whenever I see it on the TV, I have to watch it, and it moves me all over again.
On the other side of the spectrum, I can’t transition from Thanksgiving to the Christmas season without seeing It’s a Wonderful Life, and the season doesn’t seem complete if I don’t watch White Christmas at least once. White Christmas also makes me think of my Dad, who was a huge fan of Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye.
ANGI: What’s your perfect day?
ANN: A warm but not overly hot day on the beach, under an umbrella, with a book. Walking to look for shells, and swimming in the sea. Then finding the perfect spot to watch the sunset with my sweetie. As the moon rises, we have drinks and dinner, and then dance to a live band.
ANGI: Salad or soup?
ANN: Depends on the salad, the soup, and my cravings at the time, but generally I’d say soup. I’ve only rarely met a soup I don’t like, while I tend to give anything fancier than a Caesar’s or Cobb salad the side-eye. I think that comes from my Jamaican background, where a little shredded cabbage and carrot, sliced cucumber and tomatoes (all grouped under the heading, “veg”) was the norm on a day-to-day basis. Oh, and may I mention my obsession with Cobb salad stems from the addition of bacon???
ANGI: Would you put yourself in a Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?
ANN: A Fairy Tale, because I’d want magic! I’m not athletic, so an Action Adventure wouldn’t work for me LOL! I always figure I’d be one of the first people to die in the zombie apocalypse…
ANGI: Favorite TV rerun you watch every time you channel surf?
ANN: Forensics Files, LOL! My hubby teases me about how many investigative/crime TV shows I watch. Perhaps not what might generally be expected from a romance writer.
ANGI: Favorite date night…fancy or at home?
ANN: This is a hard one, since I like both. But at heart I’m not that much of a dress-up, fancy kind of woman, so at home would be my choice of these two. Nice dinner, a little snuggling while we watch a movie, a couple of drinks… Yes, that would work quite nicely, thank you!
ANGI: Champagne or Soda?
ANN: Despite saying I’m not a fancy kind of woman, champers, darling!
ANGI: Geek or Jock?
ANN: Geek, unless the Jock is smart as well as athletic, because while a pretty body is lovely, smarts will win me over every time. Brains are so sexy, you know?
ANGI’s GOTTA ASK: Where is your favorite writing place & why?
ANN’S GOTTA ANSWER: We have a window seat in the living room, which is at the front of our home. We live in a semi-rural area (our neighbors on one side have horses!) and the view through the sheers is of the lush, green Central Florida vegetation. I can see the blue of the sky through the tree branches, or the storms as they roll through, and the peaceful nature of it makes me happy and gives me the right frame of mind to concentrate on my story and characters, although when the barn cats come through I always have to stop and watch them hunting or playing. I have a desk in another room, but find myself in the window seat more often than not.

The quiet click of the door opening had her scrambling for enough control to turn and face him, but she didn’t get a chance to pull herself together before his deep voice reached her.
“Are we here to talk, or something else?” He was close behind her. The heat pouring off his body made gooseflesh pop up all along her back and arms, and had her breath catching in her throat. “I’m taking nothing for granted when it comes to you, Liz, so tell me why I’m here.”
“I want you.” The words flowed far too easily from her lips, but it was the truth, and she was big on the truth, even if she didn’t feel ready to face him just yet. “Right now.”
She would have replied, except he nipped her nape, the sharp scrape of his teeth along the sensitive skin making her breath hitch and her mind stumble over its thoughts.

ANN WANTS TO KNOW:
A friend and I were discussing popular tropes and I confessed the one I have the most trouble enjoying is the Big Lie. You know, when a character inserts him- or herself into another character’s life under false circumstances. I think for me it is that trust is huge, and I often have difficulty believing that trust can be reclaimed after a beginning like that. Although I will admit to loving a couple of books with that trope, it’s one I have a hard time with, generally.
So, my question for you, dear readers, is: Do you have a favorite trope, and a least favorite?
I love secret baby, amnesia, marriage of convenience, and mistaken identity... among others! ;)
ReplyDeleteOooo, secret baby is a favorite of mine too!
Deleteleast fav- triangles, heroine getting together with brothers/best friends, second chance
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of triangles or the brother/best friend tropes either, but I do love me some second chance romances... Maybe because that's what happened with my husband and me ;)
DeleteMy favourite would have to be marriage of convenience stories. My least favourite - a secret baby.
ReplyDeleteMarriage of convenience are some of the most difficult to write too, I think! It has to make sense, and that's often hard to achieve in a contemporary setting... I'd love to know what it is about the secret baby trope that makes you dislike it! I'm so curious about that!!
Deletei like romances at the end and historical is great so is k=9 i love it all except for a few. peggy clayton
ReplyDeleteLoving it all is the best, you're my kind of lady, Peggy!
DeleteWelcome to Get Lost in a Story, Ann. And the best of luck with your Harlequin Medical career !!
ReplyDeleteThank you for having me, Angi. It's been a lot of fun!
