Blast to the Past: Adella's Enemy + Irish hero Cormac McGrady + St. Patrick's SALE!

Time for another BLAST TO THE PAST and an oldie-but-goodie, previously-released book and excerpt! ☘️ In honor of St. Patrick's Day ☘️, I'm sharing Adella's Enemy (my railroad romance featuring Irish hero Cormac McGrady) which is ☘️ on SALE for $0.99 ☘️ for a limited time. Or you can read the story for FREE any time with a Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Writing my "romance on the railroad" story was inspired by authors E. A. Burke and Jennifer Jakes --  and the Hell on Wheels TV series. So it seemed fitting that my railroad-foreman hero would be Irish. Cormac McGrady soon became larger than life as most Irish characters tend to do.

I ❤️ Cormac McGrady! He's the perfect match for my post-Civil War spy Adella Willows -- who is as capable as she is headstrong. But alas, poor Adella has a soft spot for...Cormac McGrady! ;)

Blurb ~ Adella's Enemy

The War Between the States ended five years ago, but she still pursues her enemy…

Rebel spy turned government rabble-rouser Adella Willows receives her mission straight from a Washington senator—play havoc with the Katy Railroad and derail its bid to win the race. The senator craves wealth. Adella craves revenge against the man responsible for her brother’s death. But her plans crumble into chaos when she enters a battle of wits with the railroad’s foreman.

An ocean separates him from his failures in Ireland, but he’s still haunted by those who died…

Seasoned railroad foreman Cormac McGrady’s sole desire is keeping his workmen safe and employed, which means keeping the Katy ahead of its rivals. But the beautiful spy bedeviling his railroad needs protecting as well. Cormac must choose between winning the race and winning Adella’s heart, while Adella must choose whether she lives for revenge or dies for love.

Can the pursuit of an old enemy lead to a new love?

Excerpt ~ Adella's Enemy

Adella & Cormac's first kiss... Almost!

Kansas - 1870

Adella’s fingers brushed the piece of paper hidden in her cleavage and she went as still as Cormac. Blast! She’d forgotten about the telegram! She needed Cormac to stay in her hotel room, but she couldn’t let him see the telegram.

“How do you know what I want?” she whispered, stalling for time.

“I don’t. But this is what I want.” In two strides, he devoured the gap between them. Then his mouth claimed hers in a hot, heady possession.

Pressed against the door, all she could do was kiss him back. She did so with abandon. Her skin tingled, and her blood raced as if her body had woken from years of sleepwalking. She didn’t want the feeling to stop. She wrapped her arms around Cormac’s neck and pulled him closer.

He suddenly lifted his head. “I want more than one kiss,” he murmured against her lips. “And I don’t mean merely claiming everything that’s under this dress.” His hand slid up her ribcage to cup her breast.

The telegram! With a gasp, she covered her chest with both hands. The corner of the paper poked her palm. Thank Dixie. It was still there. But had he seen it? She drew back against the door.

Cormac retreated as well, lifting his hand to rake it through hair that was already disheveled. Had she done that? He reached for the doorknob and she jumped aside.

“Stay away from the worksite, Adella.” He opened the door without his customary restraint. It banged against the wall. “And, for God’s sake, stay out of trouble. Don’t provoke a man beyond his patience.”

Following Faith & the Lonesome Hearts Series

What happens when you have a 4-book series, but book #2 is under exclusive contract in a multi-author anthology? A bit of confusion. But that's cleared up now. As of Feb 7th, I can share Following Faith (book 2 in my Lonesome Hearts series) with you as a stand-alone read. Hurrah!

Lonesome Hearts Series - Western Historical Romance Adventure

It all started with my 2010 RWA® Golden Heart® award-winning book, Between Heaven & Hell (which also won the Chanticleer Laramie® for best Western Romance Drama in 2014). But then came...Faith, Bravery, and Raven.

This 4-book series follows the frontiersmen and women who meet on the Oregon Trail and afterward. Each story features characters from the other books but is also a standalone read.

The scout & the wagon boss

Fort Leavenworth, Kansas – 1850

Hannah knows one thing the moment she enters Fort Leavenworth—she’s arrived in Hell. But inside the fort is the means to a new life, a position as a scout on a wagon train bound for the Western Territories. All Hannah has to do is convince the wagon master, Paden Callahan, she’s the right person for the job.

After his wife was murdered by the Comanche, Paden let his work as a Texas Ranger consume him. Now he wants nothing more than to forget his past and disappear into the West. Unfortunately, the one man he can’t refuse has asked him to guide a wagon train full of tenderfoots across thousands of miles of Indian land. But Paden’s greatest challenge turns out to be Hannah, a woman his heart won’t allow him to ignore even though she’s been raised by an enemy he hates.

On a trail full of danger, will he guide her to heaven or hell?

* Available on Amazon (eBook/Print) & Kindle Unlimited *

The schoolmistress & the Osage warrior

Oregon Territory – 1852

Labeled a harlot and expelled from a remote logging camp and her work teaching children, Faith Featherby embarks on a journey to return a stolen spirit horse to the little girl whose photograph was hidden in the horse’s riding blanket.

Orphaned young and stifled by a lifelong shyness, Faith has only her education as a schoolmistress and her memories of her mother’s stories. She’s not an experienced rider, but a Medicine Hat horse—alleged to have the sacred power to protect its rider—might be her best hope for surviving the wilderness… until an Osage warrior rides out of the mist.

Scarred by a brutal past, the Eagle Feather challenges Faith to follow a new path where belief in yourself and your partner, be they horse or man, can lead to a triumph of the heart.

Can a single day together on horseback change your life forever?

* Available on Amazon (eBook only for now) & Kindle Unlimited *

The wilderness guide & the fugitive tracker

The Cascade Mountains, Oregon Territory – 1868

After her parents vanished in the wilderness, Élodie Rousseau found a home with an Osage warrior and a logging camp schoolmistress who joined forces to return Élodie’s beloved spirit horse. With them as her teachers, she became the legendary mountain guide, Yellow Feather. She knows everything about surviving and thriving in the wild, but something is missing.

Legendary Far North fugitive tracker, Lachlan Bravery, is tortured by his failure to find the one person who mattered most—the mentor who taught him everything he once held sacred. Driven to repay a dead man, his hunt for a notorious band of outlaws brings him to Élodie’s mountain where they must join forces on a final quest deep inside a cave with the power to destroy not only their unexpected love but their lives.

When legends collide, will the sparks ignite their love or drive them apart?

* Available on Amazon (eBook/Print) & Kindle Unlimited *

The Lakota savior & the shotgun messenger

Deadwood, Dakota Territory – 1876

Raven wants to save one person. Charlie wants to save the world. Their warring nations thrust them together but duty pulled them apart—until their paths crossed again in Deadwood for a fight for love.

In a gold rush storm, can an unlikely pair rescue each other?

Rescuing Raven features a grown-up Charlie Jennings who was a young boy in my Oregon Trail story, Between Heaven & Hell (set in 1850). You’ll also get to meet real-life (and really complicated) Al Swearengen—one of the first men to set up a business in Deadwood. Al’s most well-known saloon was The Gem Theater, but his first Deadwood saloon (the one shown in my story) was The Cricket.

* Available on Amazon (eBook only for now) or as a free read for my newsletter subscribers *

The Lonesome Hearts series (and the heroes and heroines in each story) covered a lot of ground (from Kansas to Oregon to the Dakotas) and that made them a lot of fun to write!

Blast to the Past: Robyn A Christmas Bride

Time for another BLAST TO THE PAST and an oldie-but-goodie, previously-released (just last Christmas) book and excerpt. Here’s Robyn: A Christmas Bride, my second book set in Noelle, Colorado. She's a free-spirited wagon driver. He's a workaholic Denver freight man—who needs the gift of true love.

Writing a historical romance Christmas story with the themes of a my-fair-lady transformation, selfless acts of love, and friends becoming soulmates is...a juggling act. It's so easy to drop at least one ball. How did I do?

“Jacqui has hit a home run with this one” - Peggy C, Amazon review.

Thank you, Peggy! Your words are the best reward an author can receive ❤️

But now, back to my heroine's my-fair-lady transformation. Say hello to my feisty wagon driver...

Blurb ~ Robyn: A Christmas Bride

Who’s the perfect match for a flame-haired Welsh tomboy who loves driving wagons?

Raised by three free-spirited older brothers, Robyn Llewellyn has learned to fight for what she wants—and now she wants to transform her boss and best friend, Max Peregrine, into a lifelong partner. Determined to become the image of what a marriage-minded man wants, Robyn trades her trousers for a dress and heads to Max’s hometown of Noelle, Colorado. But changing who she is with the help of the now happily-married Brides of Noelle puts her friendship with Max at risk.

Who’s the perfect match for a work-addicted Denver business owner who loves his independence?

Defying his brother and grandpa’s wishes for him to stay with them in Noelle, Max Peregrine has created his dream job—leading a highly successful branch of Peregrines’ Post and Freight while working beside Robyn, the only person who makes him smile every day. But when she leaves without a word, Max follows her to Noelle where the choices they both must face could make it impossible for them to stay together beyond Christmas day.

Excerpt ~ Robyn: A Christmas Bride

Noelle, Colorado—December 21, 1877

Max stood, astounded. Not by how much Noelle had changed, but by how little he had. Hovering inside Nacho’s front door with so many unenthused faces staring at him, he still felt like an outsider, a fraud, a square post in a round hole. Every success he’d earned since leaving Noelle seemed insignificant or even worse, like none of it had happened.

He considered turning tail and heading back to Denver. As fast as he could. Then Grandpa Gus shouted his name, and he saw him, Jack, Birdie and—

He shook his head in disbelief.

Was that Robyn? Wearing a dress? Surrounded by a roomful of men? Men who dismissed him and pinned their gazes on her. With too much enthusiasm.

He made a beeline for her. His brother leapt from his seat and intercepted him. Max held out his hand for a welcoming handshake, but Jack yanked him in for a fierce hug.

“You’re back.” Jack squeezed him even tighter.

“And you’re cracking my ribs.”

The instant Jack released him, Gus hugged him just as intensely. Birdie did as well. When he was finally free, he still struggled to breathe. Their exuberant greeting overwhelmed him.

He coughed and said, “It’s good to be here with you.” He meant it even more when he saw Robyn smiling at him.

“And what brings you here, Red Beard?” The familiar spark in her eyes when she said her special name for him, made it even harder to draw in air. Unexpectedly, her eyes darkened and her voice wavered as she said, “I hope…everything is well in Denver.”

“Your brothers are good.” As good as he could imagine them ever being. “I’m here for you.” He forgot to breathe entirely when her eyes shone brighter than he’d ever seen. “You’re needed in Denver, Red Bird.”

Blast to the Past: The Calling Birds

It's less than a week until Christmas, so it seems the perfect time to BLAST TO THE PAST with the first Christmas story I wrote. It's also my first mail-order bride tale. The Calling Birds is Birdie and Jack's romance in Noelle, Colorado. She's a seamstress on the run. He's a steadfast freight man who's never run from anything or anyone.

“Jack and Birdie's story is a suspenseful, romantic, sweet story of family, trust, love and survival. I couldn't put this story down!”
- CarterandConnersMom, Amazon review.

“This was a great read. Likable, fully developed characters with some mystery, danger and intrigue tossed [in] along the way to the HEA.”
- FluffersMom, Amazon review

I hope everyone enjoys Birdie and Jack's story as much as I enjoyed giving them their happily-ever-after with...a little bit of mystery and a whole lot of suspense 😊

Blurb ~ The Calling Birds

A wanted woman’s flight, a man in pursuit of honesty, not stolen gold…

Many years have passed since Bernadette Bellamy fled the Cariboo Gold Rush and her reputation as the sister of a French-Canadian gang of thieves. Armed with only an honest talent for sewing and a willingness to lead a solitary life on the run, she stays one step ahead of everyone seeking her brothers’ last—and now lost—heist. Until a craving to settle down makes her reinvent herself as Birdie Bell, a dress shop owner. The arrival of an old foe combined with her desire to hold onto her treasure trove of fabrics has Birdie joining a wagonload of brides bound for a remote town.

After losing his leg and his wife, Jack Peregrine buries his pain under a mountain-high pile of work. He only agrees to sign up for a mail-order bride to save the town of Noelle, keep his freighting business, and care for his absentminded grandfather. But Jack’s request for a sturdy bride who won’t crumble under his burdens brings him a woman as tiny as she is troubled.

Can two mismatched people band together to become the perfect match?

Excerpt ~ The Calling Birds

Noelle, Colorado—December 1876

The door flew open and Jack filled the doorway, once again looking wild-haired but better than any man had a right to—especially at this early hour. His frown turned to wide-eyed astonishment when he saw her. “You came back.” He glanced at Gus and heaved a sigh. “And you found him.”

Gus snorted. “I found her because I went looking for her.”

“I asked you to wait here until I—”

“You were moving too slow.”

“I was preparing breakfast. A task you insisted upon in case anyone”—his gaze cut briefly to her—“showed up unexpectedly. Then you slipped out unexpectedly and alone and—”

“Time alone can help with perspective,” Birdie said, recalling her night at La Maison away from Jack, and other memories as well. “During the winter of my eleventh year, I walked two miles to school every day with only a pair of snowshoes for company.”

Jack’s lips parted in surprise as he stared at her.

She bit the inside of her mouth to keep from sighing or grimacing. It was a challenge not to do both. Speaking without thinking came from pondering the past too much while loitering outside shop windows.

A slow smile curved Jack’s mouth as he propped his arm on the doorjamb and studied her. “Did you walk uphill both ways as well?”

Was he teasing her? “That doesn’t seem likely.”

“What if your home and your school were on hills with a valley separating them?”

She narrowed her gaze on him. “How often does that happen?”

He leaned even closer to her. “For other people, probably not often. But it was my walk to school when I was a boy in Kentucky.”

She blinked in surprise. He’d shared a snippet of his past with her and his tone still sounded teasing and light-hearted and— Could he be flirting with her? She held her breath, waiting for him to say more.

“Can we continue this inside?” Gus grumbled. “It’s cold out here. Not to mention Birdie would like her breakfast ’n I need my coffee.”

She was only hungry for what Jack might say next.

Blast to the Past: Between Home and Heartbreak

Time for another BLAST TO THE PAST and my oldie-but-a-goodie, previously-released book and excerpt. Here’s Between Home & Heartbreak my hill country historical romance with a Wild West trick-riding superstar and a humble Texas horseman.

This is a story that is... Hmm, maybe it's time to quote someone else again. Like this awesome reviewer…

"A western romance, thrill ride, filled with twists & turns in every chapter" - A.P.Reader, Amazon review.

I love the sound of a book being a thrill ride! Hope you do too.

Say hello to my Wild West trick-riding superstar heroine...

Who is Eldorado Jane? Long-lost friend or scheming Wild West superstar? She's come to steal his land. He'll steal her heart.

Excerpt ~ Between Home & Heartbreak (Gambling Hearts, book 2)

Backstory: While riding in the Texas hills, Lewis and Eldora (aka Eldorado Jane) are drenched in a rainstorm. They’ve found shelter in the Dority homestead’s one-room cabin...where their next challenge is finding dry clothing.

Texas Hill Country—1879

“Where’s your traveling case?” Lewis asked. “The one you mentioned yesterday.”

“Beside the bed but…I’ve only a nightgown left.”

Eldora’s reply thrilled and unnerved him. How the hell was he going to keep his gaze, and his hands, off her when he saw her wearing only a nightgown in a small room that held…? He inhaled sharply. He’d finally see her in his bed.

Her sigh sounded tired but also apologetic. “The rest of my clothes, the ones I got muddy yesterday, are hanging outside.”

Or they’d blown away in the storm. Either way, they were out of reach. He put the table between them as he went to retrieve her case. When he turned to hand it to her, he bumped into her. She followed him again.

He didn’t step away. He couldn’t. Not with her sweet body so close, showing him how well they kept fitting together.

His perfect shadow. But also a pale one with wet hair plastered to her head and down the back of his sodden coat. Maybe the dress she wore underneath, the one he’d admired yesterday, wasn’t as bad.

“Sorry about your coat.” Eyes dark with exhaustion, she blinked up at him.

“It’ll be fine once we hang it up to dry.”

She slipped free of his coat and handed it to him. His mouth was the first thing to go dry. Her dress hugged her every curve, wet and enticing, begging him to remove it as well, to make her his in every way. But he couldn’t. Not completely. She belonged to another man.

If he touched her, he’d be responsible for seducing her into a sin and for the regret she’d surely feel in the morning.

Blast to the Past: Between Love and Lies

The awesome Angi Morgan had the idea for the Get Lost in a Story crew to do a BLAST TO THE PAST and share our previously released books with an excerpt. So here’s Between Love & Lies my Dodge City historical romance with a saloon singing cardsharp and a Texas drover.

An oldie but a goodie. A story that... Well, I'll just quote this also very awesome author…

"Spellbinding stories that whisper to your soul." ~ Linda Broday

Receiving that quote from Linda was an ultimate fangirl moment! I love Linda's stories big time.

But now back to my Dodge City cardsharp...

Can she resist the one man who can truly make her wicked? Sadie Sullivan lost everything when a herd of longhorns bound for Dodge City destroyed her beloved farm. Now she works at the Northern Star saloon, gambling for her freedom while lying to everyone and loving no one... until a certain Texas drover returns determined to win her forgiveness and her heart.

Excerpt ~ Between Love & Lies (Gambling Hearts series, book 1)

Dodge City, Kansas—1877

“I know it’s a lie,” Sadie whispered, “but I want you to kiss me as if we were married, as if we were in love.”

Noah hesitated. Love was damned complicated.

She released a resigned sigh. “I guessed right. The truth is your promises hold no more weight than a feather in the wind.”

He’d be damned if he’d walk out of this room with those words reverberating in both their heads.
Kneeling beside her bed, he gathered her in his arms and kissed her. With his lust pounding through his veins, he wasn’t surprised when her body remained rigid, and her lips sealed. He’d broken his promise to show her tenderness.

Cursing himself for a heavy-handed lout, he drew back only to have her lips part with a gasp.
The disappointment in the sound made his heart ache. He apologized with a kiss so soft it might have been the feather in the wind she’d mentioned. Her arms wound around his neck as easily as her hair had curled around his finger earlier, and her lips opened like the petals of a spring flower.

He drank her in one sip at a time, deepening the kiss gradually, pausing often to receive her response. Every time she replied with a kiss to match the one he’d given. She was a damned quick study. He went from a beggar lost in the badlands to a man receiving a king’s feast. He couldn’t get enough of her.

He pulled back, shaking as much as the woman in his arms. His body demanded one thing, but his thoughts were chaotic. Sadie’s kisses were like fire, but they were also innocent.

No denying the truth. He’d never be her first bed partner, but he was her first kiss.

Did he have the patience to entice her kiss by kiss, instead of dollar by dollar, to stay in his arms, to forget all of the men in her past and wish for a future with only him?

Kathleen Lawless' new release, Brody's Bride, a sweet western historical

Today is the release day for, Brody's Bride, the first book in Kathleen Lawless' new series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Happy book birthday, Kathleen! Thank you for sharing your series launch with Get Lost in a Story.

SALE ALERT: Brody's Bride is available at a special launch price of .99 for a limited time!

Jacqui: What inspired you to write the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers series?

Kathleen:  I knew I wanted to write a Western Historical Series that would (I hoped) resonate with readers.  I remember watching the short-lived TV series of that name, which had been loosely based on a musical play and decided it made a catchy series name.  Since there is no copyright on titles, and no other romance series by that name I adopted it as mine.

Jacqui: How did you come up with the seven brothers' names: Brody, Bradley, Braydon, Blake, Bishop, Barron, Benjamin?

Kathleen: Apparently I like breaking the rules.  One unwritten rule of writing is to not have the main characters’ names start with the same letter, as it can confuse the reader.  But I loved the alliteration of the Brother’s Brides (all names starting with B), so I ignored the rules.  I figure if Nora Roberts can break the rules (she had brothers’ names all beginning with the same letter in one of her books), why can’t I.  The brothers are seldom all in a scene together (this is a romance after all) so I’m hoping the readers will indulge me.  Despite their names beginning with the letter B, the men are all very different from each other.

Jacqui: Before we jump into Brody and Laura's story, tell us about your free series prequel, Before the Brides.

Kathleen: I consider Book 1 to be a classic reunited lovers, second chance together story.  As teenage sweethearts, Brody and Laura are both scarred from their breakup ten years earlier.  I wanted the readers to know the story of their cute-meet in the very beginning and the factors that led to their break-up, which in turn leads to their issues when they see each other for the first time years later in BRODY’S BRIDE.
For anyone who signs up for my reader’s list to receive updates and news of special fan pricing sales, you can also download the series Prequel, Before the Brides, which I don’t plan to offer for sale.  http://eepurl.com/bV0sb1

Chapter One

Laura’s heart raced nearly as fast as the stage coach traveling the road from Yuma to Bullet.  She couldn’t believe she was back in Arizona after ten long years.  Let alone in collusion with Brody’s sworn enemy.
She wondered how long until her path crossed with Brody’s.
“Not long till we reach Bullet, Lovely Laura.”
She glanced at her companion, masking her disdain.  Little Guy, as she thought of him, rather than by his given name of Jeffrey, had no idea how useful Laura was finding him.
“I’m sure I’ll find it every bit as charming as you said, Jeffrey.  And imagine a small town being prosperous enough to build a school.”  There’d been no school there ten years ago.
“It was Pa’s idea.  Can’t have hooligans running around the countryside with no education.”  Little Guy smirked.  “Wait till he finds out I brought back a bona-fide school teacher from Los Angeles.”
Laura cast her eyes demurely downward.  “I hope he doesn’t find it too presumptuous of me to simply arrive unannounced.”
“Leave me to handle Pa.”  She could almost see Jeffrey’s chest puff with importance.
“And who, pray tell, is your sire, young man?” asked their coach mate, obviously a foreigner, judging by the man’s clipped accent and city clothing.
While Jeffrey droned on with glowing attributes to his father, which Laura had already suffered through, she turned her attention to the passing scenery.  Arizona’s countryside had barely changed in the years since she had snuck over here from Yuma to see Brody.
Would he even remember her?
Being back still seemed surreal.  All because of a random conversation overheard.
Standing in line at the post office, her ears had perked up when Jeffrey spoke of Bullet and boasted to a companion about his father’s exploits there.  According to Jeffrey, nothing could stop Hawkes Sr. from taking over every lock, stock, and barrel, including a certain ranch owned by a bunch of rag-tag losers who called themselves brothers.
Brody’s ranch.
Her heart twisted with sadness recalling the last time she had set eyes on Brody.  Did he still hate her for what she had done?
Determinedly, she had swallowed her distaste for Jeffrey Hawkes and arranged a chance meeting, the first of several.  Eventually, she let him ‘talk her into’ going to Bullet with him to teach in the town’s new schoolhouse.  She deserved an award for her acting ability as she pretended to be grateful to him for taking her under his wing.   She knew, in order to pull this off, to spy on Jeffrey’s father for Brody, it had to seem like it was all Jeffrey’s idea she was here.
Her hair, pale gold originally, had darkened over the years to a rich burnished chestnut color kissed by the California sun and shot through with lighter strands.  She wore spectacles, not that she needed them, but she believed it made her look more like a schoolmarm; older than her twenty-eight years.
When they arrived in Bullet and alighted from the coach, she glanced up and down the dust-trodden Main Street, as if seeing it for the first time.  “Why Jeffrey, I don’t see a single hotel or rooming house anywhere.”
“There is a rooming house next street over, but it’s too rough for a lady such as yourself.  You’ll stay at the Ranch with Pa and I.”
“Oh, I don’t think that would be seemly at all.  What might people think?” she said demurely, secretly applauding the chance to get close to Hawkes Sr.  Close enough to learn what his evil plans entailed.
“Don’t you worry about what people think.  My Pa takes care of all that.”

Seated in the comfy old ranch house kitchen of the Copper Moon Ranch, Brody Mason looked up as his surrogate brother, Braydon, pulled up a chair.
“Got us some new intel on Hawkes,” Braydon said.
Anytime one of them mentioned Hawkes’ name, the other six paid attention.  The twins overheard Braydon and joined them first.  All the Masons hated the man with good reason, but the Brody and the twins had an especially keen interest in seeing Hawkes thoroughly and irrevocably destroyed.
“Out with it,” Bishop said.
“Waiting on the others,” Braydon said.
One by one the other three ambled in and found seats around the massive scrubbed pine table Brody had made in his youth.  Not only did the table dominate the kitchen, it doubled as a work bench, learning desk, or operating table, depending on what the brothers needed it for on any given day.
Brody watched the way Braydon grinned at each brother in turn.  The man surely did love an audience.
“Seems Hawkes has hired himself a right comely school teacher for his new schoolhouse, and he fancies her.  Hear tell he kicked his boy right out of the running to win her hand,” Braydon said.
“Don’t see what that’s got to do with us,” dark and brooding Bradley said, picking at a sliver in his thumb.
“Remember, piece by piece, no matter how long it takes, we’re taking the man down,” Braydon said.
The others nodded in agreement and Brody felt a wave of gratitude and admiration for the unorthodox family he helped create here at the Copper Moon.  These men were his brothers in the soul.  He’d trust them with his life.
“Anything and everything Hawkes owns, or covets, slowly gets taken over by us,” Braydon continued.  “He sets his sights on the little schoolmarm, one of us needs to woo her away.”
“My vote’s with you,” one of the others said.  “You’re the ladies’ man hereabouts.”
“Just because I’m better acquainted with soap and water than you are—”
Brody stepped between the two men before moods escalated.  “Settle down you two.  The only fair way to decide who woos the fair school teacher’s favor is to draw straws.”
There was a shuffling of feet and a few murmurs of dissent.  Brody held up his hand.  “We’re in this together, or did you all forget that little detail?”
“Anyone seen her?” Benjamin asked.
“Haven’t got a look at her yet.  But she must be something if Hawkes is gunning for another trophy,” Braydon said.
They all fell silent.  As if any of them needed a reminder of what Hawkes had done to one of their own.  And the trophy he flaunted from that killing.
“Fair enough.”  Bishop set to work fetching the straws.
One by one, each of them drew.  Brody went last and his heart fell when the short straw was revealed.  He narrowed his gaze on Bishop.  “You rig this?”  Bishop and his twin were professional con artists.  He wouldn’t put anything past them.
“I swear,” Bishop said.  “Fair draw.”
Brody stared down at the straw in his hand.  Wooing a stranger.  He hadn’t got close to any females in that way since Laura….  He tamped down the thought.  Closed book.  Ancient history.
“Looks like I have to do everything around here,” he grumbled.
It wasn’t long before Brody learned the lady in question had taken up residence at the Hawkes spread.  Given the history between him and Hawkes, he could hardly go riding up to the front door, hat in hand.  He’d have to come up with an excuse to seek out the lady at Bullet’s new school.

Kathleen Lawless author photoKathleen Lawless blames a misspent youth watching Rawhide, Maverick and Bonanza for her fascination with cowboys.  Historical or contemporary, cowboys continue to resonate with her today.

One of her heroes, Steele, is a modern-day cowboy, so when she was dating on-line and met a man called Steel—   Well, he’s not a cowboy but his is an alpha male and her forever hero.  Which is why all of her stories end Happily Ever After.

Not that she can ever stick to just one genre.  So many stories to tell—never enough time.  With close to 30 published novels to her credit, she enjoys pushing the boundaries of traditional romance into historical romance, erotic romance, romantic suspense, women’s fiction and stories for young adults.

E.E. Burke's Best of the West: New from USA Today Bestselling Author Rosanne Bittner

Two worlds in conflict. Two hearts intertwined. One love worth fighting for.

Wealthy Englishwoman Lady Elizabeth Baylor longs for adventure. She leaves for America full of hope, only to lose everything to a villain hiding treachery behind his smile. Lost in this strange and lawless land, Elizabeth vows to track down the man who did her wrong, but she can’t do it alone. What she needs is someone hardened by the west and unflinching toward its dangers: notorious bounty hunter Logan Best.

Ill-mannered and seemingly ruthless, Logan exorcises his dark past by throwing himself into his vengeful profession – hunting wanted men. There is nothing about the pampered Englishwoman that should call to him, and yet as their adventure takes them across the wild and treacherous west, he realizes he’ll do anything to keep her safe … and defend his Lady to his final breath.

EXCERPT FROM LOGAN’S LADY:

“You’re late,” she told him.
Logan hardened a little at her snippy attitude. “What?”
“I asked you to come right away, Mister Best.”
Logan glanced at the sheriff, who shrugged. “I told you to hurry it up,” White said.
Logan looked back at Elizabeth. “Ma’am, I’m not a man who takes orders. And I was on the trail several days before I came here and—I might remind you—helped you. I was damn tired last night, so I slept in.”
“You probably drank too much and slept with one of those awful painted women. I know about men like you. I’ve read about them in penny dreadfuls.”
Logan could hardly keep from bursting out laughing. “In what?”
“Penny dreadfuls. I’ve learned here in America they are called dime novels.”
Logan couldn’t control a little gasp of laughter. “You believe those things?”
“Was I wrong about where you were last night?” she replied.
Never in his life had Logan struggled so hard to stifle a true guffaw. “No, ma’am, you were not wrong, but life out here isn’t always like what you read in those little books. I’ve heard about them and they’re food for a lot of jokes among men like us. Believe me, there aren’t many heroic cowboys or lawmen out here.”
“Have you ever read one of those little books?”
“No, ma’am.”
“Do you read, Mister Best?”
Logan still felt sorry for this poor young lady, but already he wasn’t fond of her as a person. The “princess” from London had an air about her he did not like at all.

BOOKLIST (Jenna Friebel)  – “This immersive romance set in the lawless Old West is packed with action and adventure, including murder. Bittner has created an unlikely couple worth cheering for, and she sure knows how to keep readers on the edge of their seats.”

PUBLISHER’S WEEKLY – “Bittner makes an implausible premise feel absolutely real, showing how two very different characters can make compromises and find love. Fast-paced, touching, and sensual, this historical is not to be missed.”

First published in 1983, Rosanne Bittner is a USA TODAY best-selling author of 68 novels involving American history, from the French & Indian wars through the settling of America’s Great West. Dubbed an “emotional powerhouse” for her memorable love stories, 95% of Rosanne’s realistic, gritty westerns have garnered 5-star reviews on Amazon. She lives in S.W. Michigan, but has traveled the West for 30 years and has visited most of the locations in her books.

E.E.: Do you often "get lost" in a book?
Rosanne:  I don’t often get lost in a book I am reading, probably because the book I am writing myself at the time is always on my mind. However, I do get lost in every story I write because my characters mean so much to me. I fall in love with the hero and identify with the heroine, and as I write the story I learn more and more about both characters and flesh them out to the point of feeling as though they are real. Their spirits visit me from the past and ask me to write their story. It’s as though I am writing real history.

E.E.: What is the first book you remember reading?
Rosanne: The first book I remember reading is THE SECRET CLOCK, A Nancy Drew mystery. But the first book I read that really stuck with me and made me want to write about pioneer women is A LANTERN IN HER HAND, by Bess Streeter Aldrich. It is a wonderful story about the loneliness of living on the Nebraska prairie with no neighbors – and showing how the heroine’s dreams for herself were realized through her children. Great story. You need Kleenex beside you when you read it.

E.E.: Have you ever met a real life hero?
Rosanne: A real-life hero I’ve met is Dee Brown (a man, in case you aren’t sure), who authored BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE. After reading that book, I knew I had to write the truth about our Native American history.

E.E.: What sound do you love?
Rosanne: I absolutely love the sound of birds in the spring, and I love watching them. I have lots of bird feeders, and our back yard is full of big pine trees. Birds love to nest in them.

E.E.: What is your favorite movie?
Rosanne: My favorite movie of all time? That’s a hard one, but it would probably be LAST OF THE MOHICANS. But I also love PALE RIDER, HANG ‘EM HIGH and THE SHOOTIST. All were so realistic, and you can’t beat Clint Eastwood and John Wayne in westerns. THE SHOOTIST makes me cry every time because it’s about an ageing gunfighter dying of cancer, and at the time John Wayne had cancer. It was his last movie. What a perfect ending for him and for his movie career. I also love (for a contemporary) Clint Eastwood in GRAND TORINO. Fabulous movie – and such a good lesson in cultural differences in this country.

E.E.: Do you put yourself in heroine's roles while writing?
Rosanne:  YOU BET!!! Who wouldn’t want to be held by such great heroes?

E.E.:  Do you write while listening to music?
Rosanne: Yes, I ALWAYS write to music – all the theme songs from some of the greatest westerns, especially LONESOME DOVE and THE BIG COUNTRY.

E.E.: Which hero would you most like to invite to dinner?
Rosanne: JAKE HARKNER (From my Outlaw Hearts series)

E.E.: What drives your hero crazy?
Rosanne: In LOGAN’S LADY, the one thing that drives the hero crazy is the heroine’s haughty attitude and her advanced education. The hero can’t even read.  The one thing that drives the heroine crazy is the hero’s lack of “proper” manners and the fact that he can’t read and is always making fun of her use of big words he doesn’t even understand.  She considers him an uneducated, crude “cowboy.”

E.E.: Describe an absolutely perfect day.
Rosanne:  An absolutely perfect day for me is for it to be warm enough to go outside early in the morning with a cup of coffee and listen to the birds and watch the baby rabbits in my garden – then do a little gardening myself – then go inside and write for a while – then enjoy another cup of coffee in my garden at noon – then take a short nap – then write more – then work outside a little more.

E.E.:  What has been your most rewarding publishing moment?
Rosanne: My most rewarding publishing moment was when my Sourcebooks editor asked me to write a sequel to OUTLAW HEARTS, a book I wrote in 1993 and always wanted to continue with a sequel. It took over 20 years to finally find an editor who wanted that sequel. Those two books led to two more and became my Outlaw Hearts series about my beloved “bad man with a good heart” – Jake Harkner. I am hoping to write a fifth book. It is already written “in my head.”

My editor says there have been several books written about Americans going to England and getting caught up in English culture, but not many about the English coming here and landing in our rough and rugged cowboy culture. That is the basis for my book, LOGAN’S LADY. Would you like to see more books about this? It is food for humor and culture clash and it was fun to write!
