E.E.: What’s the first book you remember reading?  

Danica: The Secret of the Old Clock. I was in kindergarten, and fell in love with Nancy Drew. The librarian didn’t believe I could read it, so I had to prove to her that I could read well enough before she’d let me get any others. I then read every Nancy Drew book they had!

E.E.: What turns you off like nothing else?

Unkindness. I’ll be honest. I find the current political situation really upsetting right now, because people on both sides are being mean to each other and eating each other alive rather than trying to figure out ways we can work together to make the world a better place for everyone. I know that requires elected officials to do the same, but maybe we should be the ones to lead with love and kindness. Even outside politics, it makes me really sad to see all the mean comments people have about one another and how we don’t seem to care about our fellow human beings. I really appreciate it when I see others being kind to one another.

E.E.: What was the first story you remember writing?
Danica: I wrote a story about a merman named Allaric. I remember nothing other than those details, but I’m certain it was the most awesome story ever. As they are when you’re eight or so years old.

E.E.: What is something that not a lot of people know about you but you WISH more people COULD know?

Danica: I wish people could know how much of an introvert I really am. I come off as very friendly most of the time (and when I seem unfriendly, it’s because I’m depleted), so a lot of people don’t believe I’m an introvert. But I am! And I need a lot of alone time to be able to do what I’ve got to do!

E.E.: What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing?

Danica: Being an author always was the dream! I’ve wanted to be one since I was little, but I never figured I could until I was retired. So glad I was wrong!

E.E.: Tea or Coffee? And how do you take it?

Danica: Tea… I like it plain, but I like a lot of varieties, so it’s not really plain. No cream, no sugar. The same with coffee, when I have it.

London, 1825

   ‘You’re undressed! Why are you not up already? It’s past noon!’ Jane waved her hand from the top of Jasper’s head to the rippled and exposed stomach, and the dark line of hair leading her gaze even lower. She was already out of breath from running up the Chartons’ massive front stairs, but catching Jasper in his bedroom without his shirt was suffocating. His toned chest tinged with a honey hint of a tan nearly knocked her away from the closed door. She’d known Jasper Charton and his family her entire life. But she never thought she’d see quite this much of him.
   ‘I wasn’t expecting company.’ Jasper wiped the last of the very musky and, if she was not mistaken by the scent, expensive shaving soap from his face and haphazardly hung the towel on the washstand bar. He made no move to take up the rumpled shirt sagging over the foot of the bed, and perched one fist on his hip as though it was every day an unmarried young lady burst into his bedroom unannounced. ‘What are you doing up here?’
   ‘We must speak about the building.’ She fiddled with the key in the lock of the door but her shaking hand wouldn’t co-operate and she gave up.
   Concentrate! This was no time to be distracted. With her brother and Mr Charton downstairs, and Mrs Charton distracted by one of her grandchildren, Jane had precious little time alone with Jasper. ‘I have a plan for it, but I need your help, as a friend. We’re still friends, aren’t we?’
   His eyebrows rose in surprise. ‘Even after what Milton did to you?’
  ‘You had nothing to do with it, and he isn’t pertinent to the matter I wish to discuss today.’ Actually, proving to everyone, including herself, she could catch a husband was very much a part of this, but he didn’t need to know it.
   He cocked one eyebrow. ‘You want to talk business, in my room, alone?’
   She picked up one of the pair of diamond cufflinks in the dish on the table beside her, then put it down. It did seem foolish when he pointed it out, but speaking here was better than trying to whisper downstairs and risking someone overhearing their negotiations. For this to work, everyone, including Philip, must believe they were marrying for the right reason. ‘Of course. We have privacy.’
   ‘Which makes me wonder if business is really all you want?’ With a wicked smile he slipped the top button of his fall through its hole. He was teasing her as he used to do and the easy familiarity of their old friendship slid between them. It was more potent than the pulling of her pigtails and she adjusted the top of her spencer, breathless once more as she stared at his long fingers on the button, waiting to see what he might reveal. Offering him her innocence wasn’t an unpleasant bargaining chip, especially since she was dying to finally experience the deed she’d heard Jasper’s sister whispering about at so many parties. If she got with child it would certainly force the matter.

GETTING TO KNOW DANICA

 ANGI: How often do you get lost in a story?

DANICA: Great question, because I like to read as often as possible, but to me, getting lost in a story is when you get so engrossed in reading something that you forget about everything else. Like the time recently when I burned dinner because I picked up a book and kept needing to read the next page. That doesn’t happen very often for me, but every once and a while, it does, and I love that feeling. Maybe a few times a year.

ANGI: Hugh Jackman or Chris Pine?

DANICA: Hugh Jackman!

ANGI: What's your most favorite thing to do in your state?

DANICA: I love Colorado, which is why I’ve set all my books there. I absolutely love the mountains, so I like to go out and enjoy them, though not as much as I would like. Closely tied in to that (and a lot of the inspiration for my books) is the history. I’m a big history nerd, so I like to visit all the historical sites and museums.

ANGI: What’s your favorite meal?

DANICA: The older I get, the more it varies, but the one thing that hasn’t changed is this: anything someone else cooks! Okay, it has to taste good, but I’m not picky. Oh, and someone else needs to clean up too. J

ANGI: What do you like about the hero of your book?

DANICA: I like that Mitch sees family not just about blood, but about choosing to love the people God brings into his life however they come. He’s truly an honorable man, and I love how deeply he gives his heart in a situation that would make many angry and bitter.

ANGI: Would you rather be in a Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?

DANICA: Fairy Tale. I’m not in good enough shape for Action Adventure. I’d die in the first five minutes.

ANGI: What’s your favorite rerun on television?

DANICA: I don’t get television where I live, so it’s all about NetFlix. So we tend to binge-watch and move on. We just finished The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and I loved it. Looking forward to the next season.

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

DANICA: My Fair Lady.

ANGI: What drinks or snacks are always on your desk when you’re writing?

DANICA: Tea! I’m a big tea lover.

ANGI: Hiking Boots or Dancing Heels?

DANICA: Actually, both. I love to hike and dance, and I do both as often as I can. Well, okay, I do prefer boots over heels. I hate wearing heels.

ANGI: Are you a Star Wars fan? Favorite thing about the reboot?

DANICA: This might make me a horrible person, but I’m actually not a fan. I’m kind of impatient and lazy when it comes to waiting for movies to come out, so by the time each one comes out, I forgot what the last ones were about and I didn’t like them enough to want to re-watch. I don’t watch much TV and movies, so it has to either be really good or really mindless for me to watch more than once.

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: What’s one thing from your bucket list?

DANICA’s GOTTA ANSWER:  Bucket list questions are weird to me, mostly because I feel like I’m already living my bucket list. A few years ago, I decided it was silly to wait to do all the things I wanted to do in life until it was almost too late. So we moved to the mountains, bought our dream home (it will be eventually, it’s a fixer upper), and we’re working on living that dream. Pretty much everything left on my bucket list is travel, and the only thing holding me back on that is money (but I’m working on it!). I want to go to Tahiti SO BAD!! I blame Harlequin for this, because growing up, I read a lot of books set in exotic places, and that gave me the travel bug. I don’t remember specifically anything about Tahiti, but lots of tropical islands. To me, Tahiti is the epitome of what I think a tropical island experience would be.
