If you follow me on Facebook, you might have seen  road trip last week with fellow author Amanda Reid. More than just another author to me, Amanda's a good friend who has supported me...a lot!

The Flannigan Gift. Ha! Mina Flannigan Shaffer never believed in anything paranormal, let alone the claims her Grandmother and sisters had visions and other psychic abilities. This skeptic’s more focused on running Sweetie’s Tea Cup Cafe, rehabilitating her life, and spending time with her family after a recent split and reunification with her husband.

But her careful plans are upended when she learns she can see ghosts. Even worse? The spirit of a man who nearly caused her to lose her small-town diner blackmails her into figuring out who shot him. Now, this reluctant sleuth is hot on the trail of a murderer who is willing to kill again to keep their secrets. The suspects are piling up and Mina’s time is running out faster than icy sweet tea on a hot Texas day.

Mina turned away from the farthest booth with an armload of empty plates then halted in her tracks.

"For the love of all that's holy," Mina muttered to herself. Why in the world would Wayne Beedy be standing in her restaurant’s entry unless he'd come to cause trouble?

Today he appeared especially strung-out. His skin had taken on the grey cast of people who aren't getting enough oxygen. Usually greasy, shoulder-length dark hair stuck out at every angle. Clothing was torn with a huge black stain right in the middle of his gray t-shirt.

He stared at Mina across the heads of the customers in the diner's seating area, his gaze unfocused, seeming a bit confused. Fabulous. For heaven's sake, he tried to poison her sister's boyfriend, a sheriff’s deputy no less, in this very restaurant not three weeks ago. And now all doped up. How in the heck had he bonded out on an attempted capital murder charge?

Ugh. Before he could do something stupid, it'd be better to get Chief Ruiz started this way. She began to weave through the tables to head off Beedy and any ensuing mayhem.

"Yoo hoo! Mina, I need to talk to you about ten pies for the church picnic." Melissa Turner, the town busybody Mina called ‘Nosey’, waved at her from a booth near the window.

Double fabulous. All Mina needed was the gossip about Wayne nearly poisoning someone stirred up again. "I'll be right there." Hopefully she could evict Beedy before everyone noticed him. She pulled her phone from her jean's back pocket and punched 9-1-1. She swung her gaze back to the troublemaker. Her thumb halted on its way to stab the green button to connect the call.

Where'd he go?

The bell should've sounded when he left. Had she missed it over Nosey’s shrill voice? She scanned the front and side windows. No Beedy. Kayla stood at the cash register rolling silverware in paper napkins. Surely the waitress would've heard him come in or seen him standing there or even leaving, but she hadn't reacted at all. It was as if Wayne Beedy had evaporated into thin air.

Like a ghost.

The creeps danced up and down her spine as the hairs on the back of her neck rose to attention. She shook it off.

Bah. No such things as ghosts.

MEET AMANDA

I’m an author of light paranormal cozy mysteries, launching my first book in October 2019, with urban fantasy romance to be added to my list in 2020. Since I was little, I’ve been a reader and lover of mystery, sci-fi, romance, and paranormal books. Some of my early favorites were a Wrinkle in Time, Dune, and Lord of the Rings. Classics, right? I found my first romance book in my aunt’s closet around thirteen years of age and quickly decided it needed to be added to my repertoire. As do many readers, I had always dreamed of writing. I finally learned the secret, and I’ll let you in on it--do it. Sure, there’s a lot to learn about writing, but the first step is to put that story on the page. Then comes the rest.

As for me beyond writing, I was a career Army brat and lived in exotic locations like Tehran, Iran and DeRidder, Louisiana as a child. I obtained an International Politics degree from Penn State, and dreamed of a career in the State Department, but due to unforeseen circumstances I learned of much later, I ended up as a federal agent. I spent 24 years investigating murders, fraud, identity theft, drug dealers and many other crimes before retiring in mid-2019. As you can imagine, it’s given me a wealth of inspiration for my mystery and urban fantasy stories. I do like to help people get law enforcement right in their stories, so don’t hesitate to message me if you have a question and I’ll do my best to help.

THE Q&A

ANGI: What story have you gotten lost in recently?

AMANDA:  I just finished a story from Fenley Grant we, and other awesome writers, will be publishing in June 2020. It’s an Urban Fantasy Romance Series called the Enchanted Rock Immortals. It was a great read, full of snark and action and the urban fantasy that I do love so!

ANGI: Favorite field trip?

AMANDA: I generally love an aquarium. Been to the Baltimore Aquarium, the Dallas World Aquarium (surprisingly good, BTW!), and a couple of others. When I visited Monterey last year, my hubby and I took our three-year old granddaughter to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We lost sight of her age and it was more in and done. One day, I would love to go back. I worked at the Waikiki Aquarium in college when I thought I wanted to be a marine biology major and I’m still in love with the sea.

ANGI: What’s your favorite cartoon character?

AMANDA: My favorite cartoon character is Bugs Bunny. My family quotes it all the time. From “I must’ve taken a wrong turn in Albuquerque,” to “what a maroon,” to “Shaddup, shuttin’ up,” to “Duck season,” to “Oh, Bunhilde you’re so wuv-we” and so many more. They are all classics in my eyes!

ANGI: Daffy Duck or Donald Duck?

AMANDA: With my answer above, it would have to be Daffy. Duck Dodgers in the 21^st and a Half Century is one of my favorite cartoon skits.

ANGI: What’s your favorite dessert of all time?

AMANDA: Crème Brule. And I’m milk intolerant and it kills me because I just can’t eat it anymore!

ANGI: Got a favorite song? What makes it special?

AMANDA: There are too many songs out there to get a favorite. I love music—something speaks to me in it. I sing along, it forces my body to move. Even cry when something’s incredibly sad. I’m partial to the story-tellers, though, so Steely Dan, Billy Joel, Robert Earl Keen, and Sting are among my favs. I’m having fun with the song titles from my mythical Flannigan Sisters Mysteries band, the Country Swing Kings—My Heart’s Warmin’ Up with Her Kisses is among my favorites so far!

ANGI: Wild Flower or Roses?

AMANDA: Wild flowers. Roses are pretty, but the idea that wildflowers have randomly sprouted and survived makes me love them all the more, especially here in Texas. Roses generally get more maintenance.

ANGI: Favorite inspiration or Quote?

AMANDA: Right now, my favorite inspiration is, “Just a girl who decided to go for it.” It’s a sticker from my Happy Planner and it spoke to me recently. Unfortunately, I’m somewhat of a procrastinator and perfectionist. If I hadn’t decided to go for it, Finders Keepers and Ghosts, Pies, & Alibis would still be in my computer! And my planner... Don’t get me started!

ANGI’s GOTTA ASK:  Where is your favorite writing place & why? 

AMANDA’s GOTTA ANSWER:   This is my writing corner in my Room of Requirement. I refinished the desk from a junk-store $20 find. It’s quarter-sawn oak and silky-smooth to the touch! And the big drawer is awesome. I also made the lamp out of a wooden industrial thread spool and recovered the chair. I’ve got pictures of my loved ones surrounding me. The shells I’ve all collected and the things on the wall inspire me. The rest of the room is part craft room with two big armoires holding most of it, and part TV room. It’s one of my favorite places to be!

AMANDA WANTS TO KNOW:   Mina’s got some gourmet pies at Sweetie’s Tea Cup Café. My all-time favorite pie is Chocolate Bourbon Pecan. It’s a chocolate pie flavored with bourbon and a pecan crust on top—think chocolate pie on the bottom and pecan pie on the top for the best of both worlds. So. Dang. Delicious. What’s your favorite pie?

Lights drew her attention to the opposite wing of the mill, where a man stood staring at her window. At her. Breath caught in her lungs as she froze.

But only for a brief moment until she realized it wasn’t a man, at least not a living one. Her breath escaped on a whoosh of relief. Intuition whispered the man was the spirit who’d watched her last night.

The one from her dream.

Shadows clung to his body, ghostly fingers releasing as he stepped into the dim slash of moonlight. Lights flickered from behind him, like the dying gasps of sputtering candles. Dressed in a white shirt with an old-fashioned high collar, sleeves rolled halfway up his forearms, and dark trousers, he reminded her of a working man in a World War I photograph. As if he had removed his coat and tie and rolled up his sleeves to get to work.

Except the men in those photos didn’t sport the wide-eyed, happy look of this man. Ghost. Whatever. Yeah, he wasn’t the only one surprised. She’d sworn never to see a ghost again, yet there stood a ghost, captured by her gaze. The man was hot, in an old-fashioned way. At least he didn’t sport a handle-bar mustache.

He gestured to her, his hand beckoning in a “come here” motion.

She squeezed the bridge of her nose. Was she actually thinking of heading his way? Judging by the way her feet pointed toward the door, she’d already decided. Dammit. She might not want to see a ghost or speak to a spirit, but past experience told her if she ignored them, they ramped up the annoying factor.

How bad could it be to talk to an attractive spirit?

THE SUPER DUPER QUESTION FOR TODAY

ANGI: I heard you were asked to write THE SHADOWHEART CURSE so it could be made into a movie. You can you tell us a little about it?

KARILYN: Hi Angi! I'd love to tell you all about it! Charlie Band is a well known horror director who approached my publisher, The Wild Rose Press, with an idea he had to stream ten movies based on ten books. He had ideas for books/movies based on movies/series he had made that were popular. He asked ten different authors to write books for his ideas and then those books would be made into movies. I was chosen as one of those authors. You can sign up to livestream the making of the movies at https://deadlyten.com. Despite the rest of the movies being horror, mine is a ghostly romance between a medium and a ghost. I promise, no blood and gore. J I'm looking forward to watching The Shadowheart Curse be turned into a movie! They are supposed to start filming it in either September or October. All ten movies will released on February 14^th, 2020.

I've got to admit, I really enjoyed writing someone else's idea. I'm a ghost writer (get it? Okay, bad pun)! This was a fun experience for me and I'd do it again if asked.

MAGGIE TIDESWELL is a South African author with a passion for romance. All over the world people are falling in love, even the birds and the bees are doing it. Ghosts just can't seem to leave her alone and she combines things that can't be explained, sweaty bodies and rumpled beds in a way that will make your toes curl and your hair stand on end.

Maggie just can't do without perfume, coffee and the internet. She is nearly as passionate about food as she is about creating alpha heroes every woman will fall in love with, just as she does, every time. The strangest thing is that cats have never played any kind of role in her stories, as she is owned by three of them. That might change soon.

THE Q&A

ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?

MAGGIE: Every time I pick up a book – and I read a lot. I’m one of those people who can’t get to sleep without a book in my hand, literally. My husband is great at turning the light off, putting the book and my glasses away without waking me.

ANGI: What’s your favorite thing about your book’s hero?

MAGGIE: He is a true South African. He walks around barefoot and shirtless (and no woman will complain about the vision of him), he loves as hard as he trusts and he loves animals.

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

MAGGIE: The Sound of Music. I must have watched it a million times. It is the perfect romance.

A rainy Sunday, which means no work, pajamas till lunchtime, and writing without interruption. Bliss.

ANGI: Salad or soup?

MAGGIE: Can I have both, please?

ANGI: Favorite TV rerun you watch every time you channel surf? 

MAGGIE: Grease seems to pop up on my screen very often. I know every song, every line if dialogue.

ANGI: Favorite date night…fancy or at home? 

MAGGIE: No, fancy, a restaurant with tablecloths on the tables. At home isn’t a date, it’s ordinary, everyday. And married to a chef, my cooking skills are too humble.

ANGI: Geek or Jock?

MAGGIE: Jock. I’m a bit, well, romantic, and a jock fits the profile. Not that I have anything against geeks – I am a bit geeky myself.

ANGI’s GOTTA ASK:  Where is your favorite writing space & why?

MAGGIE’S GOTTA ANSWER:  

My study. Never before have I had a study and my writing corner was the corner of the lounge or the dining room table. Now, in my new house, I have a study, with a view of the garden. And it doesn’t matter how many scraps of paper I stick to the walls or how many maps and pictures of places are laying around.
